Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 284: Chapter 285: Projected Understanding

The multi-layered spatial lattice runes continued to rewrite themselves around Runar.

Nested folds deepened. Inverted axes braided into new configurations. Self-referential containment shells multiplied, each one referencing the spatial signature of the others so that any attempt to break a single layer would only increase the tension across the rest. Pull one thread and the whole knot tightened. Cut one wall and the others grew thicker. The structure pulsed with a low, resonant frequency that distorted the dim light of the vertical gulf, bending it in slow spirals that made the air look like it was breathing. Under the Ancient Will’s quiet influence the runes kept advancing. More complex. More recursive. More absolute. Each new layer built on the one before it, reaching toward a density that seemed to have no ceiling.

Runar sat at the center of it all. Legs crossed. Posture unchanged. Hands resting on his knees. His breathing was slow and even. The Eye of Myriad Truths poured golden-white light across every surface without pause, steady as a heartbeat. The light touched each new rune the moment it formed, reading it before it could fully settle, catching it mid-creation and pulling its meaning apart while it was still warm.

One part of his mind remained fully occupied with active reading. Spatial axioms unfolded under the Eye’s gaze like flowers opening in time-lapse. Distance vectors were traced to their origins, then traced again when the lattice shifted and the origins moved. Directional inversions were mapped, catalogued, cross-referenced, then remapped as the lattice adjusted itself in real time. He compared every new structure against the research notes absorbed from the Rune Sovereign’s residual memories. Where the notes provided a framework, he slotted the new information in. Where the notes fell short, he built the framework himself, testing each connection before accepting it. Comprehension moved at an extraordinary pace. Principles that would have required days of careful study outside the Reliquary settled into place within minutes. The density of the lattice forced his mind to work faster. The complexity of the runes forced his understanding to go deeper. And he let both pressures push him without resistance.

”The seventh containment shell references the third through an inverted axis. That means the containment is not external. It is internal. The shell contains itself by referencing its own structure from the opposite direction. Self-referencing. Again. The Rune Sovereign’s favorite principle. Applied here to spatial law instead of rune grammar. Same logic. Different language.”

He filed the connection. Moved to the next layer.

At the same time, a deeper, quieter process continued in the background of his consciousness. Not something he was doing deliberately. Not something he had triggered or directed. Something that had been building since the moment he first stepped through the barrier and entered this place.

Since entering the Reliquary, every rune he had encountered had been feeding into the Eye. Every residual structure. Every barrier. Every fleeting spatial fold. Every self-referencing loop and resonant sub-structure and negotiation principle. The integration had been gradual. Almost unnoticed. A slow accumulation of data and principle, layering itself into the Eye’s foundation like sediment building into stone. He had not felt it happening. Not consciously. It had simply been occurring, quiet and constant, while his attention was focused on the foreground work of reading and surviving.

The sudden flood of high-level spatial runes from the interlocking lattice pushed that background process past a threshold.

The Eye of Myriad Truths was evolving in real time.

The change was quiet. Deep. Structural rather than flashy. There was no burst of light. No dramatic flare of power. No shockwave or visible transformation. Instead, inside the golden-white construct, new perceptual layers unfolded. Slowly. Carefully. Like rooms being built inside a house that was already standing. Specialized strata designed for higher-dimensional and recursive spatial language. Layers that had not existed before. Layers that could only exist because of everything the Eye had consumed since entering this place.

The Eye’s internal architecture reorganized. What had been a broad, general-purpose tool began forming denser lattices of its own. Specialized pathways. Dedicated channels. Focused arrays built for one purpose: reading, understanding, and manipulating void space at a depth that went far beyond ordinary comprehension.

What emerged was a unique spatial authority. Not the kind that most Multiversals carried. Not the kind that could be learned from technique manuals or principle cultivation. Something closer to the source. Closer to the root.

Most Advanced Multiversals and above could bend Void Space. Fold it. Tear it open in unique ways. Create pockets. Compress distances. Rip holes between locations. Those effects were powerful. Impressive. But they could still be contested. Disrupted. Overwritten by a stronger will or someone with deeper comprehension of Spatial Principle. They operated on the surface of void space. On its skin. Its outermost layer.

The evolved Eye operated closer to the level of local void spatial axioms. The rules themselves. The foundational grammar that defined what space was and how it behaved before any manipulation was applied. It could now lock coordinates against external interference so thoroughly that hostile manipulation simply failed to register. Not blocked. Not resisted. Simply invisible to the attack. The attack would arrive and find nothing to grab. Nothing to disrupt. The coordinates would be there, but they would be written in a language the attack could not read.

It could generate self-sustaining void spatial domains that rejected foreign influence by rewriting the underlying rules of the void space itself. Not by building walls. Not by applying force. By changing what the space meant. By editing the definition of the territory so that anything not aligned with the new definition simply did not apply.

It could read and rewrite void spatial constructs at a foundational depth most Multiversals could not clearly perceive, let alone contest. Where others saw a wall, the Eye saw the sentence that defined the wall. Where others saw a lock, the Eye saw the grammar that made the lock possible. And grammar could be rewritten.

”The spatial authority is settling into the Eye’s structure. It is not an addition. It is an integration. The Eye is not gaining a new ability. It is becoming more of what it already was. More complete. More fundamental. More true to its own nature.”

The evolution settled into place with the same calm inevitability as a key turning in a lock that had always been meant for it. No struggle. No resistance. Just arrival.

Runar felt the leap clearly. A quiet expansion of capacity. A sharpening of perception. New options settling into the edge of his awareness like tools laid out on a table he had not noticed before. The spatial lattice around him looked different now. Not more complex. More readable. The layers that had required effort to parse now unfolded naturally, like text in a language he had finally become fluent in.

He did not pause to marvel. Did not stop to examine the new capabilities one by one. Did not celebrate or assess or take stock. He simply continued reading, treating the increased power as another resource to be used when the time came. The lattice was still growing. The Will was still feeding it. And every moment spent reading was a moment of progress that could not be taken back.

”The next layer is forming. Twelve nested folds this time. Referencing each other through inverted temporal axes. The containment is no longer purely spatial. It is spatio-temporal. The shell contains itself across time as well as space. Interesting.”

He read on.

---

Outside the lattice spatial barrier, something began to happen.

Without any conscious intention from him, Runar’s eyes began externalizing simplified versions of the principles he was decoding. Faint golden-white diagrams formed in the air around the cage. Three-dimensional sketches of spatial folds. Recursive loops. Containment axioms. Directional inversions. They appeared slowly, like condensation forming on cold glass. First just a faint shimmer. Then a line. Then a shape. Then a complete structure, rotating gently in the dim light of the gulf.

They started small and translucent. Little more than glowing outlines. Ghosts of the real thing. Shadows of what the Eye was actually seeing. Then they grew clearer. Larger. More detailed. Lines sharpened. Angles defined themselves. Relationships between components became visible. The projections were not the full complexity Runar was seeing. Not even close. They were simplified. Reduced. Stripped down to their most basic structural relationships. But they were still advanced enough to carry real value. Advanced enough to teach. Advanced enough to change someone’s understanding if they were sharp enough to learn from them.

On the dense script ground far below, the survivors noticed multiple things almost at once.

Wukong’s head tilted back. His golden eyes widened. He had been sitting casually, staff across his knees, watching the lattice with the loose attention of someone observing something mildly interesting. The casualness vanished. For a moment he simply stared. His mouth opened slightly. Closed. Opened again.

Then a short, disbelieving laugh escaped him. Sharp. Bright. Genuine.

”Are you kidding me?” He shook his head slowly, still watching the diagrams rotate in the air above. ”He’s studying so hard the answers are leaking out. Just... dripping out of his head into the air for everyone to see.” He laughed again. Shorter this time. Almost admiring. ”That eye was already a cheat ability. And it just got stronger. Is that fair? Is that allowed? Should someone file a complaint?”

No one answered him. He did not expect them to. He kept watching, golden eyes sharp, cataloguing the diagrams even as he joked. His grin stayed wide. But behind it, his mind was working. Reading. Comparing. Learning.

Soren Vale stood motionless a short distance away. Silver light sharp behind his eyes. His posture was rigid. Focused. The kind of stillness that came from pouring every available resource into a single task. Scholarly hunger warred with unease across his face. He wanted to step closer. Wanted to examine the projections from every angle. But something held him in place. Caution. Or perhaps the awareness that getting too close to the cage would be noticed.

Instead, he immediately began trying to memorize every diagram that appeared. His eyes tracked each one from formation to completion. His lips moved silently, tracing the simplified folds and loops with focused intensity, committing shapes to memory before they shifted or faded.

”Those are not crude approximations,” he said quietly. Almost to himself. Almost to no one. His voice carried the flat, precise tone of someone narrating their own observations for later reference. ”Even simplified, the topological relationships are... advanced. Recursive containment referencing multiple axes at once. Self-writing axioms that define their own boundaries. If I can capture enough of this... if I can hold even a fraction of what is being shown...”

He did not finish the sentence. His gaze never left the projections. His hands moved slightly at his sides, fingers tracing patterns in the air. Building his own memory palace. Fixing the images in place before they could fade.

Sylphy stood apart from the main group, her Experts arranged in a loose formation behind her. Her eyes were narrowed. The silver markings along her arms pulsed once, sharp and bright, responding to the density of the spatial principles being displayed. She spoke without looking away from the lattice. Her voice was low. Controlled. Carrying the weight of command without needing to raise.

”Record everything. Every diagram. Every shift. Every rotation. Do not approach the cage. Do not attempt to interact with the projections directly. But do not waste what is being offered either.” A pause. Her jaw tightened slightly. ”That eye just changed. I can feel the difference in its presence. The weight of it. The depth. The gap is widening while we watch.”

One of her Experts, a thin woman with sharp features, spoke carefully. ”Should we attempt to replicate the spatial principles being shown? The simpler ones seem—”

”Study them. Do not replicate them. Not yet. Not until we understand what they reference.” Sylphy’s voice stayed flat. Final. ”We do not know what happens if you build a structure based on an axiom you have not fully grasped. Watch. Learn. Do not build.”

Vark stood alone. He always stood alone. His expression remained cold. Empty. The same flat, dead look he had worn since entering the Reliquary. But a faint irritation moved behind his eyes. Small. Barely visible. But there. The public display of superior comprehension felt like a challenge issued without words. Not directed at him specifically. But existing in the same space as him. Breathing the same air. And that was enough.

Annihilation energy stirred once at his fingertips. A faint curl of black, hungry and eager. He looked at it. Looked at the lattice. Looked at the projections. Then forced the energy still. Not because he could not destroy the cage. Because destroying it now would be wasteful. Premature. The ruin was still feeding him. Still testing him. And he wanted everything it had to give before he took what he actually came for.

”First the woman. Now this one keeps producing surprises. The ruin is feeding him. Pouring knowledge into him like water into a cup. Fine. Let it fill him. When the time comes I will simply erase whatever advantage he thinks he has gained. All of it. Every rune. Every principle. Every scrap of comprehension. Gone.”

His expression did not change. His hands stayed at his sides. He watched the projections with the patience of something that had never been in a hurry and never would be.

The mysterious woman watched the projections more closely than she had watched anything else since entering the Reliquary. She stood slightly apart from everyone else, hands clasped loosely in front of her. Her composed features sharpened with genuine interest. Not hunger. Not envy. Interest. The kind of focused attention given to something truly unexpected. She studied the rotating diagrams of spatial runes and principles with the calm evaluation of someone examining a rare and unexpected tool. Measuring it. Weighing it. Deciding what it was worth.

Her lips moved once. Very quietly. Almost inaudible.

”Recursive spatial authority. Self-sustaining domains. Axiom-level manipulation.” A pause. ”He is not reading the lattice. He is becoming the lattice.”

Around them, the other survivors reacted in overlapping waves.

Some shifted their positions on the script ground, angling for a clearer view of the golden-white diagrams. Moving a step left. A step right. Tilting their heads to see around obstacles. Finding better sight lines. A few began attempting to copy the simpler spatial principles into their own understanding. They murmured activation sequences under their breath. Traced shapes with their fingers. Tried to fix the images in memory before they shifted or dissolved. Others simply stared. Calculation and quiet alarm settling across their faces as the scale of the gap became visible in real time. Not theoretical. Not estimated. Visible. Right there in the air. Rotating. Growing. Becoming more complex with every passing moment.

Conversations broke out in low, tense clusters. Small groups huddled together, speaking in urgent whispers.

”He’s not even trying to escape anymore. He’s using the trial as a study session. The lattice is trying to crush him and he’s just... reading it.”

”That eye was already unfair. Already beyond anything most of us have. Now it’s evolving in front of us? While we watch?”

”Is he doing this on purpose? The projections. Showing off? Letting us see how far ahead he is?”

”Doesn’t matter if it’s on purpose. Look at those structures. Even the simplified versions are denser than most of what we faced in the outer forest. If those are the simplified ones...”

”Then the full versions would break our minds.”

One independent cultivator, face tight with something between envy and hostility, muttered loud enough to be heard by those nearby. ”Someone should do something about this before the gap becomes insurmountable. Before he gets so far ahead that the rest of us become irrelevant.”

Another voice answered immediately. Sharper. Colder. ”Interfere with a man the ruin itself is testing this hard? Look at that lattice. Look at how many layers it has. Look at how fast it’s still growing. The Reliquary is investing in him. Interfering now would be suicidal. Whatever is happening up there, the ruin is allowing it. And you do not fight what the ruin allows.”

The first cultivator went quiet. His jaw worked. But he did not argue.

The social atmosphere shifted. Slowly. Invisibly. Like the temperature dropping one degree at a time until you realized you were cold. Awe that had begun as reluctant respect slowly took on edges of resentment. Of strategic reassessment. Of quiet, careful recalculation. People who had ranked Runar as a secondary concern now quietly revised their internal hierarchies. Moved him up. Marked him differently. Filed him under a new category.

The projections continued to expand. Clearer and more complex with every passing stretch of time. Deeper spatial principles began appearing. Structures that even experts like Soren and Sylphy found difficult to fully grasp at a glance. Nested manifolds that contained themselves in four directions simultaneously. Self-writing containment axioms that defined their own boundaries and enforced their own rules. Directional inversions that referenced their own inversions, creating loops of meaning that had no starting point and no end.

Tension thickened across the ground. Not violent. Not yet. But present. Heavy. The kind of tension that comes from watching someone pull away from the pack and knowing you cannot follow.

---

Inside the lattice, Runar noticed the projections only after they had already started forming. A faint awareness at the edge of his attention. Golden-white light appearing where there should have been only the lattice. He glanced at it once. Briefly.

Mild surprise flickered through him. Followed almost immediately by calm acceptance. The Eye had always externalized certain insights when pushed to high intensity. It was a known side effect. A quirk of the ability. Nothing more. The projections were not deliberate. Not a choice. Just overflow. Excess understanding spilling out because the container was full.

”Irrelevant. The library is still open. The pages are still turning. The projections are simply ink that spilled outside the margins. They do not change what I am doing. They do not slow me down. They do not matter.”

He continued absorbing the lattice at the same extraordinary pace. New nested folds appeared under the Will’s influence and were read, compared, integrated. Inverted axes braided themselves into higher-order configurations and were mapped. Self-referential shells deepened and were parsed. The dual process continued without interruption. Active reading in the foreground. Deeper structural evolution settling into place in the background. The Eye’s new spatial authority stabilized further with every principle it consumed. Growing stronger. Growing more complete. Growing more itself.

”The twelfth fold is forming. It references the first fold through a triple inversion. Which means the entire lattice is circular. The beginning references the end. The end references the beginning. The structure is a closed loop. It contains everything by containing itself. Beautiful. And completely insane.”

He read on.

---

Far below, the survivors stood divided.

Some still tried to learn from the light. Eyes tracking every new diagram with hungry focus. Fingers tracing patterns. Minds stretching to hold concepts they were not built for. They would not look away. Could not look away. The knowledge was too valuable. Too rare. Too freely given to ignore.

Others now looked at Runar with the measuring gaze reserved for long-term threats. Not enemies. Not yet. But threats. Variables that needed to be accounted for. Factors that changed every calculation. Conversations grew shorter. More guarded. Alliances that had been tentative began to harden or fracture along new lines. People who had been willing to cooperate yesterday now looked at each other differently. Wondering. Calculating. Deciding whether the person next to them would be an asset or an obstacle in the weeks to come.

The knowledge that one man was pulling further ahead while sealed inside a prison designed to break him created a pressure none of them could fully ignore. It pressed on everyone equally. The strong and the weak. The experts and the beginners. The ones who could read the projections and the ones who could only stare. It pressed because it was true. Because the gap was real. Because it was growing. Because none of them knew how to close it.

---

Deep within the Reliquary, the Ancient Will observed with high satisfaction and sharpened hunger.

The external projections had been unexpected. A pleasant surprise. An unplanned variable that served its purposes perfectly. The internal evolution of the Eye had been even more so. Both confirmed the correctness of its earlier choice. Both validated the investment it had made.

”Remarkable. The Eye is maturing faster than projected. Faster than any previous candidate. The spatial authority alone puts him beyond what I expected at this stage. And the public display... the projections... they will create useful social pressure. Isolation. The others will see him growing. Will feel the gap widening. Will react. They will either try to use him or try to remove him. Either outcome serves me. Cooperation makes him a tool I can leverage. Hostility makes him a target I can protect or sacrifice as needed.”

It decided not to interfere yet. Not to reveal itself. Not to speak or act or make its presence known. Instead, it continued raising the complexity of the lattice. Feeding still more advanced spatial language into the structure. Nested folds multiplied. Self-referential shells deepened. The topological density climbed another degree. And another. And another.

”Push the evolution further. Let the Eye grow. Let it mature. Let it become everything it can become. When the time comes, I will claim both the body and the tool. The vessel and the instrument. Together. Complete.”

The projections expanded outward in slow, luminous arcs. Golden-white diagrams of pure spatial law rotated in the air around the densest cage the trial had yet produced. They turned. They shifted. They grew more complex. More beautiful. More impossible. Runar remained seated at the center, calm and unhurried, still reading. Still absorbing. Still becoming more than he had been an hour ago.

On the ground, the survivors looked up with a mixture of hunger, envy, and growing unease. The gap between one man and the rest of the field was no longer abstract. No longer theoretical. No longer something that could be ignored or dismissed or rationalized away. It was visible. Luminous. Rotating in the air for everyone to see. And it was still widening.

The social dynamics of the group had begun to fracture around the Ancient Will’s chosen vessel.

And the Eye of Myriad Truths kept turning the pages.
