Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 279: Chapter 280: The Final Seats

The clearing stayed heavy with silence.

Drifting script particles from the erased still hung in the air like pale ash, slowly thinning but not yet gone. The smell of broken information lingered, dry and wrong.

No one spoke for a long time. Even the surviving pirate underlings stayed pressed against the outer edge of the stone, eyes fixed on the empty circles as if the seats might suddenly reach out and grab them.

Different thoughts moved through the people already sitting.

Soren Vale kept his thin hands folded in his lap, silver reading held low. His face stayed calm, almost academic, but inside a quiet relief settled deep. *If my rune foundation had been shallow like them, I would be drifting particles right now. The ruin does not give second chances. It simply measures, then erases. I was not careful enough. Next time I should wait and watch and let others test the waters.* He glanced once at the fading ash and then looked away, already calculating how many seats were left and who might still try to claim them.

Sylphy sat with her back straight, silver bloodline markings still glowing faintly. Cold satisfaction mixed with something sharper in her chest. She had stopped her underlings in time. That decision had saved most of them. But the sight of the dissolving bodies had driven a new understanding home. Even Expert-tier status meant nothing here without real depth in understanding of runes. The forest had been dangerous. This place was absolute. She kept her eyes on the remaining empty circles and said nothing.

Lyra Solenne and her four followers remained in disciplined silence. Their linked net stayed quiet for several breaths before one of the followers spoke, voice low and careful.

”I was overconfident about my own foundation until this moment. Watching them turn to ash... it is different when it happens in front of you.”

Lyra answered evenly. ”Then remember the feeling. Next time we wait. And we do not take unnecessary risks.”

The others gave small mental nods. Their auras stayed steady and controlled.

Wukong shifted in his circle, golden eyes still tracking the last floating particles. He spoke through the spirit link, voice quieter than usual.

”That erasure was too clean. No fight, no resistance, just gone. I’ve seen people die before, but not like that. One second they’re shouting, next second they’re dust.”

”And more importantly most definitely no chance for reincarnation or backup revival”

He was quiet for a moment, then added, ”Makes you wonder how many more of these filters and dangers are waiting deeper in.”

Runar answered calmly through the link.

”At least many more. Probably several. The tower is only waking up now. Stay ready.”

Wukong gave a small mental grunt of agreement and pulled his gaze away from the drifting ash, already forcing himself to focus on the remaining empty seats.

Vark the Annihilator showed almost no emotion. The cold around him stayed steady. Inside, only a single cold note formed. *This level of ruthlessness matches what I expected from a true Paragon’s work. No mercy. No second chances. Good.*

A faint, almost invisible pressure briefly swept across every occupied circle, as if the tower itself was re-evaluating the people it had already accepted. The sensation was light, like a fingertip brushing the back of the mind, then gone. Most of the seated only noticed it as a slight change in the air. Runar felt it more clearly through the Eye of Myriad Truths and filed the information away without comment.

At the edge of the clearing, Darius Korr and Finn Harlan still stood watching.

Finn finally walked over to a still-shaking pirate underling.

The pirate had nearly sat in a circle but had been shoved aside at the last second.

Finn grabbed the pirate by the neck, the pirate face still face pale, one hand still trembling.

”Talk,” Finn said simply. ”What happened here?”

The underling’s voice came out broken and terrified. He recounted the greedy rush, the way their leaders had sat and been accepted, the scramble that followed, the sickly light, the man who dissolved while trying to jump out, and the second man whose disintegration had infected the person who tried to help him. He kept glancing at the empty circles as if they might wake up and come for him.

When the underling finished, Finn dropped him and the pirate hurriedly backed away, Darius and Finn looked over the seated figures in silence for a long moment.

Darius spoke flatly. ”The strongest contenders are already sitting. More are still coming, but the real threats are already here.”

Finn nodded once, sharp eyes still moving across the ring.

Darius let out a short breath. ”Our rune foundation is weak. We probably can’t occupy a circle.”

Finn gave him a sideways look. ”Speak for yourself. I’m not as weak as you think I am.”

Under Darius’s shocked gaze, Finn walked to an empty circle without another word. He stood over it for a second, then sat. A clean recognition pulse answered him almost immediately. The stone under him warmed. Finn turned his head and smirked at Darius.

Darius stared. Then he chuckled under his breath, the sound low and rough.

Finn raised an eyebrow. ”What’s so funny?”

”I guess we’ve both been fooling ourselves,” Darius said.

He walked to the circle beside Finn and sat down. The circle accepted him too. A soft pulse moved through the stone. Finn’s smug expression turned to real surprise.

They both looked at each other and broke into low, genuine laughter. The sound was short but real, a release of tension after everything they had just witnessed.

For a brief moment after both were accepted, the runes under them glowed a fraction brighter than some, hinting that their foundations were deeper than even they currently admitted. Neither of them noticed. They simply sat side by side, still smiling a little, and turned their attention back to the remaining empty seats.

Two strong independent Multiversals arrived next.

They came from different directions, both slowing the moment they stepped onto the stone and saw the seated participant, drifting particles and the fearful pirates.

Each one questioned a different underling and received the same terrified explanation. After hearing it, they became extremely cautious.

The first one walked a full circle around the nearest empty seat, reading it carefully from every angle before he finally sat. The pulse of acceptance came, and he exhaled in visible relief, shoulders dropping.

The second one almost backed out at the last second. His hand hovered above the circle, trembling slightly. He stared at the fading ash still floating in the air, then forced himself to sit. When the clean pulse answered him, he closed his eyes for a moment and simply breathed.

More people arrived and more seats were filled. And the rings grew tighter.

When suddenly a change moved through the atmosphere in a wave.

Slow, deliberate footsteps echoed from the forest — clear, measured, and unnaturally steady. Every seated person turned toward the sound. Even Vark shifted his cold gaze. The living trees at the edge seemed to lean away from the approaching presence.

A beautiful, majestic woman walked out of the living trees. Her presence was naturally regal, the kind that made the air feel quieter around her. A distinct bloodline aura surrounded her, different from Sylphy’s silver markings but equally rare and potent. It moved with her like a second skin, calm and ancient.

Inner reactions rose at once.

Soren Vale’s eyes narrowed. *Another major contender... and another bloodline bearer. This is becoming crowded.*

Sylphy’s expression tightened a fraction. *Shit. Another bloodline bearer.*

Lyra Solenne’s voice came quietly through her net. ”This woman feels dangerous. Watch her.”

The woman ignored the crowd as well. Her gaze moved only to two people: a brief glance at Vark, then a longer, steady look at Runar. Runar met her eyes without flinching. Something unspoken passed between them in that short moment, then she looked away.

Wukong leaned toward Runar through the spirit link, amused despite everything. ”I think she might be into you.”

Runar ignored him completely.

She walked straight to one of the last empty circles with absolute confidence. She did not examine the tower. She did not ask questions. She simply sat.

The circle accepted her with a noticeably stronger pulse than most of the others. The stone under her glowed a deeper color for a second before settling.

When she sat, the tower’s surface briefly showed a single complex rune that only Runar’s Eye of Myriad Truths fully captured before it faded. He filed it away without comment, already turning the shape over in his mind.

Only a very small number of seats remained.

The surviving pirate underlings still refused to risk it. They stayed far back, some sitting on the ground with their heads in their hands.

One last arrogant independent ignored the warnings. He had arrived late, listened to only half the story, and decided the others were simply weak. He walked to an empty circle with a confident stride and sat.

The sickly, rotting light flared under him at once. He had time for one shocked shout before the disintegration took him the same way it had taken the others — legs first, then torso, then nothing but drifting particles. The fear in the clearing deepened even further.

After this final erasure, one of the empty circles cracked slightly, as if the ruin itself was growing impatient with unworthy attempts. A thin line ran across the stone and then stopped.

While the last seats were being filled, Vark had a short, cold recollection.

He remembered the day he killed a man he believed to be a disciple of the Rune Sovereign. The fight had been short and absolute.

From the fragments of information he tore out of that man’s mind, he had learned of this ruin — the Myriad Script Reliquary, the personal work of the Rune Sovereign, and the possibility that something inside it could complete the Principle of Annihilation he had been building for years.

After that day he had forced himself into obsessive rune study, day after day, year after year, driven by the single belief that the key was hidden here. That was why the circle had accepted him without hesitation. His foundation had been hammered into place by purpose and blood.

The final qualified person stepped into the last empty circle and sat.

For one full heartbeat the clearing was completely still.

Then all twenty circles flared in perfect unison.

A deep, resonant pulse rolled through the stone hard enough to make teeth vibrate. The tower answered with a low, vibrating hum that shook the entire clearing. Dust lifted from the ground. The scripts across the tower’s surface began shifting faster and more complexly than before, layers peeling and rearranging in patterns that hurt to look at directly.

A faint, layered whisper — not quite sound, not quite thought — brushed against every seated mind for a fraction of a second. Most could not understand it. It was too dense, too old, too layered with meaning.

Runar caught a single clear fragment through the Eye of Myriad Truths:

”The first filter is complete.”

The first true trial was about to begin.
