Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 285: Chapter 286: Stalled Ascent

The golden-white eye projections continued to propagate in the air around Runar’s cage. Slow. Luminous. Casting faint shifting patterns across the dense script ground far below.

The diagrams that leaked from his eye turned like the hands of a clock that measured something no one else could see.

For the people still trapped in their own spatial barriers, those diagrams had become the only source of progress left. The only thread to grab. The only hand reaching down into the pit.

A woman with short-cropped hair and a cracked Runic artifact pressed both palms against the inner wall of her cage. The artifact hung from her belt, fractured down the middle, leaking faint runic motes like blood from a wound. She had been staring at the same projection for what felt like hours. A basic recursive fold. Three nested loops that inverted direction at each layer. Simple enough that the Eye had externalized it without effort. Complex enough that she had failed to grasp it fourteen times in a row.

Now the simplified version hung in the air near Runar’s lattice, clear enough to follow. The lines were steady. The relationships between the loops were visible. The inversion points glowed slightly brighter than the rest, marking exactly where the direction changed.

She traced the shape with her eyes first. Slowly. Following each loop from start to end. Then with her fingers, drawing it in the air between her and the barrier wall. Her lips moved. Muttering the structure under her breath. Naming each component. Locking it into memory through repetition.

The barrier in front of her flexed. A thin crack of light appeared along one containment shell. Small. Fragile. Barely visible. But real.

She pushed harder. Fed the newly grasped principle into her own runes. Not gracefully. Not smoothly. Desperately. Like someone forcing a key into a lock that had rusted shut. The crack widened. The spatial lock shuddered. Held for one more second. Then collapsed inward with a sound like glass breaking underwater.

The barrier dissolved.

She dropped through the opening. Caught herself with a rough burst of force that was more panic than control. Landed hard on the script ground. Her knees buckled on impact. She stayed down for several breaths, chest heaving, palms flat against the dense runes beneath her. The cold of the surface seeped into her skin. She could feel her own heartbeat in her throat.

After a long moment she looked back up at the cage she had just escaped. The projection that had saved her was already shifting. Already changing. Already becoming a more complex shape. Moving on. Not waiting for her. Not caring that she had needed it.

*Got out. Barely. But I got out.*

She pushed herself to her feet. Her legs shook. She did not look back up again.

A few platforms away, an older independent cultivator with a scarred jaw followed the same path. He had been watching the projections longer than the woman. More patient. More methodical. He copied a directional inversion from another diagram. Not the simplest one. Not the most obvious. One that fit the specific weakness in his own barrier. He forced it into the thinnest point of his cage’s structure, grinding it in like a wedge into a crack. The barrier groaned. Resisted. Then tore. A narrow gap opened. Just wide enough to slip through sideways.

He squeezed through. Hit the ground heavier than the woman. Rolled once, shoulder slamming into the script surface. Came up coughing, one hand pressed against his ribs. His scarred jaw worked silently for a moment. Then he straightened. Looked up at the empty cage above him. Looked at the projections still turning around Runar’s lattice.

*Did not earn that. Not really. Copied it. Traced it. Did not understand it the way he does. But I am out. And being out is enough.*

A third figure — a thin young man from a lesser multiversal branch — managed the same feat minutes later. His escape was uglier. Less controlled. The barrier collapsed in uneven fragments that left bleeding cuts across his arms where sharp edges of dissolving spatial law scraped against his skin. He hit the ground in a sprawl, gasping, blood dripping from shallow wounds that sizzled faintly where the residual spatial energy still clung to them. But he reached the ground alive. He pulled himself upright on shaking arms and stood there, breathing hard, staring at nothing.

Each successful landing drew eyes. The people already standing on the script floor watched the new arrivals with mixed expressions. Some nodded once in quiet acknowledgment. A small gesture. A recognition that the person had done what needed to be done. Others recalculated. Counted heads. Measured the growing number of competitors who would now continue deeper into the Reliquary. No one offered help. No one spoke congratulations. No one reached out a hand or said well done. Survival was its own statement. The only one that mattered here.

---

Deep within the Reliquary, the Ancient Will observed the sequence through its viewing threads. Every escape. Every landing. Every desperate, borrowed comprehension that cracked a barrier open.

It felt a flicker of irritation. Small. Cold. The kind of irritation that came from watching a carefully designed system produce the wrong output.

The original parameters of the Spatial Escape trial had been designed to eliminate the majority of participants. That was the purpose. The function. The point. Only a handful were meant to reach the ground. The strongest readers. The deepest comprehenders. The ones who could break their own cages through their own understanding. The projections had changed the equation. Weaker candidates who should have remained sealed for the full duration. Who should have been forced to forfeit or simply run out of time. Were now standing on the script floor. Their foundations temporarily propped up by knowledge they had not earned through their own reading. Borrowed understanding. Secondhand comprehension. Enough to crack a cage, but not enough to build on.

*Too many. That projections created an unintended knowledge cascade. The Eye externalized more than I accounted for. The trial is no longer filtering correctly. The wrong ones are reaching the ground.*

It reviewed the data it had already gathered on Runar. The speed of absorption. The qualitative leap in the Eye. The calm refusal to leave the cage early. The way he had treated the trial not as a test to pass but as a library to exhaust. Every data point confirmed what it already knew. The vessel was maturing. The tool was growing. The investment was paying returns.

Continuing to feed the lattice would only allow more of the lower-tier survivors to benefit. More escapes. More borrowed knowledge. More dilution of the trial’s purpose. The lattice had given Runar everything it currently contained. Further growth would serve the crowd, not the vessel.

The decision was instant.

The command went out. Silent. Absolute. Felt only by the runes themselves.

New spatial runes stopped forming inside Runar’s cage. The lattice froze at its current density. No additional folds appeared. No new recursive shells nested into place. No fresh inverted axes braided themselves into the structure. The lattice remained complex. Oppressive. Intact. A monument to what it had been. But it no longer grew. No longer fed. No longer offered.

It simply waited.

---

Inside the lattice, Runar felt the change immediately.

The steady stream of fresh material that had been pouring into the Eye simply ceased. Like a river dammed mid-flow. One moment the current was there, constant and heavy. The next it was gone. Absolute silence where there had been constant input.

He continued reading for several more minutes. Checked every remaining structure. Confirmed that every fold, every shell, every axis had already been fully parsed. Compared against the Rune Sovereign’s notes. Integrated into his comprehension. Cross-referenced. Filed. Connected. There was nothing left unread. Nothing left to absorb. Nothing left to learn from this particular arrangement of runes.

The Eye of Myriad Truths hovered at the edge of another qualitative leap. He could feel it clearly. A tight, coiled pressure behind the golden-white construct. Waiting. Strained. Like a muscle held at full contraction, trembling with the effort of not quite completing the motion. One more dense cluster of spatial principles. One more heavy sequence of recursive containment. That was all it needed to tip over the threshold. The next reorganization was close enough to taste. Close enough to feel the shape of what it would become.

*Almost. One more push. One more feed. The next layer is right there. I can see the structure it wants to form. I can feel the shape of it pressing against the inside of the Eye. Just one more cluster and it would—*

Nothing came.

The lattice sat still. Silent. Finished.

On the ground below, the survivors sensed the same rising pressure that had been building around Runar’s cage. The weight of potential. The sense of something about to break through. They had felt it climbing for minutes. Felt the air thicken. Felt the projections grow more complex, more dense, more impossible. And now they felt it stall.

Wukong’s golden eyes narrowed. His head tilted slightly, like a dog hearing a sound it could not quite identify. ”He’s about to jump again. I can feel it. The pressure is—” He stopped. Frowned. ”Wait. It stopped.”

Soren Vale’s voice was quiet and tight. His silver-lit eyes were fixed on the cage above. ”If that Eye evolves another level here, the rest of us become spectators for everything that follows. We become background. Decoration. Irrelevant.” A pause. His jaw tightened. ”It stopped. Whatever was feeding it... stopped.”

Sylphy stood with her arms crossed, silver markings dull. Her expression was carefully blank. Controlled. But her fingers pressed slightly harder into her own arms than necessary. ”He will take every opportunity in the deeper trials. No one else will matter. The gap will become permanent.” She exhaled slowly. ”But not yet. Whatever was pushing him just... ended.”

A scarred independent near the edge of the group muttered, low and bitter, ”At this rate we might as well start ranking ourselves for second place. Save ourselves the embarrassment of pretending we’re competing.”

Fear and resentment sharpened across the group. Several people shifted their weight. Hands drifted closer to weapons or stored techniques they knew would be useless against the lattice. Against the man inside it. Against the gap that kept widening no matter what they did. The knowledge that one man sealed inside a cage was still pulling further ahead created a pressure that had nothing to do with the trial itself. A pressure that lived in their chests. In their pride. In the quiet, ugly place where they compared themselves to him and found nothing.

Then the pressure stopped climbing. Fully. Completely. The weight in the air plateaued. Held. And began, very slowly, to ease.

Inside the lattice, Runar opened his eyes fully. The golden-white light pouring from the Eye dimmed a fraction. Not much. Just enough to mark the shift. He sat in silence for a long moment. Expression unreadable. Hands still resting on his knees. Posture unchanged. The lattice around him was still dense. Still complex. Still oppressive. But it was no longer offering anything new.

A quiet sigh escaped him. Soft. Private. Barely audible.

*So close.*

The next evolution had been within reach. One more cluster of advanced spatial runes and the Eye would have reorganized again. Pushed its new spatial authority into an even more absolute register. Reached a depth of perception that would have made the current lattice look like a child’s drawing. Instead the flow had simply ended. The lattice had given him everything it currently contained and then gone still. Like a book that ran out of pages one Chapter before the end.

He clicked his tongue once. Soft. Private. A small sound of dissatisfaction that no one else would hear.

*Disappointing. But the gains are already extreme. Far beyond what I expected when the trial started. The spatial authority is settled. The evolution is stable. And there will be more runes deeper in. More structures. More density. No reason to sit here staring at a finished book.*

He raised one hand. Waved it. Almost casually. The gesture of someone brushing a cobweb from their path. The gesture of someone dismissing something that no longer required their attention.

The multi-layered spatial lattice — the densest, most complex cage the trial had produced — shattered.

It did not crack. Did not peel. Did not break apart in pieces or dissolve slowly. It disintegrated. All at once. Completely. Interlocking barriers, nested folds, recursive shells, and inverted axes all collapsed simultaneously into drifting particles of pure script. Luminous ash. Golden-white motes that scattered across the vertical gulf like embers from a fire that had finally burned out. The oppressive weight that had filled the space around his platform vanished in a single breath. Gone. As if it had never existed. As if the cage had been a dream that ended the moment he decided to wake up.

Runar stepped out of the dissolving remains. His foot found empty air. He did not fall. He floated downward in a controlled descent, steady and unhurried. The residual spatial authority from the evolved Eye settled around him like a quiet field. Invisible. But present. A subtle distortion in the space around his body that marked him as different. As more.

He landed lightly on the dense script ground. Boots touching the surface with almost no sound. The impact sent no ripple. No shockwave. Just a faint pulse of golden-white light that spread outward from his feet and faded. For a brief moment the ground beneath him felt heavier to everyone standing nearby. A subtle reminder. A quiet announcement. The man who had just arrived was not the same one who had entered the cage.

Silence held.

No one moved. No one spoke. The golden-white motes from the shattered lattice still drifted in the air above, catching the dim light of the gulf, slowly fading. The survivors stood in their scattered positions and watched the man who had just walked out of the hardest trial any of them had faced, and none of them knew what to say.

Wukong was the first to break it. He let out a short, dry breath and shook his head. His grin was back. Small. Real.

”Finally decided to come down, huh? I was starting to think you planned to live up there. Build a little house. Settle in. Maybe grow some vegetables.”

Runar glanced at him. Expression calm again. Settled. The brief flash of dissatisfaction already filed away. Already irrelevant. ”The material ran out.”

Wukong snorted. ”Material ran out. Right. Because you read the whole cage. Every single rune. And then got bored.”

Runar did not respond. He did not need to.

Around them the other survivors watched with carefully neutral faces. Some looked relieved that the second evolution had not completed. That the gap, while enormous, had at least stopped growing for the moment. Others still measured the distance between themselves and the man who had treated the hardest cage in the trial as a private library. A few simply filed the information away. Stored it. Said nothing. Would think about it later, in the quiet hours, when the adrenaline faded and the reality settled.

High above, the remaining empty platforms and shattered barriers began to dissolve. Slowly. Systematically. The trial cleaning up after itself. The Reliquary preparing for whatever came next. The systematic voice spoke once more, clean and absolute, carrying no emotion and no judgment.

”Second Trial complete for current participants.

Those who wish to withdraw may signify their choice now.

You will be returned to the first layer of the Reliquary with the rewards earned from the trials completed so far.

Circles and platforms will reset for subsequent batches.

Those who remain will proceed to the next stage.”

The voice faded. The words hung in the air for a moment, then dissolved like the barriers above.

For several heartbeats no one moved. Then the majority of the survivors began to step forward one after another, signaling their decision to leave.

Most of the remaining pirate underlings were among the first. Their faces still carried the raw fear of the spatial cages and the memory of watching people dissolve into ash. A broad-shouldered man with a half-healed cut across his cheek spoke roughly as light began to gather around him.

”I’m not dying in here for someone else’s treasure. First and second layer rewards are enough.”

Another spat on the ground and muttered, ”We already lost too many. I’m done.”

They vanished one after another.

Sylphy’s four Experts exchanged glances. The strongest among them, a thin woman with sharp features, spoke quietly but firmly.

”Captain... our foundations are not deep enough for whatever comes next. Staying would only drag you down.”

Sylphy’s jaw tightened, but she gave a short nod. ”Go. Take the rewards. Survive.”

The four Experts stepped forward together and disappeared in the same soft light.

Lyra Solenne’s remaining followers made the same choice. One of them bowed slightly toward her.

”We cannot match the pace of those who remain. We will wait on the first layer.”

Lyra’s expression stayed composed, though her eyes hardened. ”Understood. Leave.”

They too were wrapped in light and returned to the first layer.

When the last of the lights faded, only a small group remained on the dense script ground.

Runar.

Wukong.

Vark the Annihilator.

The mysterious woman.

Soren Vale.

Sylphy (alone).

Lyra Solenne (alone).

Darius Korr and Finn Harlan.

The rest had chosen to stop.

Runar stood among those who stayed. The Eye of Myriad Truths no longer radiated outward. The projections were gone. The diagrams had faded. The golden-white light had dimmed to its resting state, steady and contained behind his gaze. Yet the quiet pressure of its recent growth still lingered in the air—a residue, a scent, the feeling of a room after someone powerful has just left it.

Above them the last fragments of the lattice faded into nothing. Luminous ash dissolving into the dark of the vertical gulf. Gone.

The second trial was over.

The gap remained.

And the Reliquary was already preparing the next door for those who had refused to turn back.
