Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 253: Chapter 254: Difficult News

Runar’s main body left the void without any dramatic display. One moment he was seated outside William’s membrane, and the next he stood in the familiar courtyard of the family compound on the planet. The transition was instantaneous. The air carried the scent of home—clean earth after a recent rain, distant trees, the faint sweetness of flowering vines that climbed the outer walls, and the quiet residual energy of the household’s protective formations humming like a soft heartbeat beneath everything.

In the main sitting room, the clone that had remained with the family was still in quiet meditation. The moment the main body arrived, the two existences recognized each other. Without resistance or delay, the clone dissolved into streams of golden light and merged back into him. Their memories had been fully linked from the very beginning, so there was no sudden influx of new experiences—only the quiet reconnection of a single continuous self. The feel of Nyla’s laughter during spars, the smell of Lirien’s morning tea, the weight of Cassia’s thoughtful silences, Celestia’s steady presence beside him in the evenings—all of it was already part of him, settling back into perfect alignment without the slightest friction.

Runar stood still for a long moment after the merge, simply breathing in the feeling of being fully present again. The house was peaceful. Somewhere deeper inside he could sense the familiar auras of everyone who lived here—Celestia, Cassia, Nyla, his own parents Jake and Lirien, and Celestia’s parents Caspian and Seraphina. The entire extended family had settled into one household, and the warmth of that arrangement settled over him like a familiar blanket.

He knew he would have to leave eventually. The deeper multiversal void still waited, and his path demanded he continue growing. Yet standing here now, surrounded by the quiet presence of the people he cared about most, he found he could not bring himself to say the words. He also did not truly want to leave.

*A few more months,* he decided. *I’ll stay a few more months. Then I’ll tell them.*

Time passed gently.

The following months became a stretch of genuine peace. The family lived as one unit. Mornings often began with shared breakfast in the large kitchen, where Lirien and Seraphina still argued lightly over cooking methods—Lirien insisting on traditional recipes from her home world, Seraphina countering with more refined techniques she had perfected over centuries—while Cassia occasionally produced rare ingredients from her storage with quiet amusement. Jake and Caspian spent long hours on the wide porch discussing cultivation theory and the practical limits of ordinary talent, sometimes joined by Runar when he felt like offering a quiet correction or suggestion that left both men staring at him in mild exasperation. Nyla dragged Celestia into spars in the open fields behind the compound, their exchanges growing sharper and more refined with each passing week. The sound of clashing principles and laughter often carried through the open windows in the afternoons.

In the evenings the whole household often gathered on the wide porch, talking about nothing important while the stars of Willith’s universe filled the sky. Sometimes they simply sat in comfortable silence. Sometimes Jake would tell old stories from his mortal days, and Lirien would correct the more exaggerated details with a fond roll of her eyes. Runar rarely spoke much during these gatherings. He preferred to listen, memorizing the sound of their voices and the way the light from the house lanterns caught on familiar faces.

They did not remain confined to the planet. On several occasions the family traveled together. They visited quiet ocean worlds where the water glowed faintly under twin moons, and the nights were filled with the soft bioluminescence of drifting sea creatures. They walked through floating mountain ranges where gravity shifted in gentle waves, forcing them to adjust their footing with every step while Nyla laughed and tried to race ahead. They spent days on a planet covered in crystalline forests that sang softly when the wind passed through them, the notes rising and falling like a living melody. Runar stayed close throughout these trips, sometimes teaching a refined application of a principle, sometimes simply watching, always present. The clone that would eventually remain behind was not yet needed. For now, the main body was home.

The days were ordinary in the best possible way. No sector-wide crises. No sudden appearances of Void Devouring Dragons. Just the steady rhythm of a family that had chosen to stay together.

Then the day arrived.

They were on vacation on a warm, quiet planet whose beaches stretched for hundreds of kilometers in either direction. The sand was fine and pale, the water a clear turquoise that darkened only far from shore. As the afternoon faded, the sky began to shift into deep shades of orange and purple. The sun hung low on the horizon, casting long golden reflections across the gentle waves. A soft breeze carried the scent of salt and distant flowering coastal plants.

Runar stood a short distance from the others, watching the light change. After a long moment he turned and called softly.

”Celestia. Nyla. Come sit with me for a while.”

The two of them approached without hesitation. Celestia’s expression was calm, already sensing the weight behind the invitation. Nyla looked curious but already slightly resigned, as if she had been waiting for this moment for some time. They settled onto the sand beside him, the sound of the waves filling the comfortable silence.

Before Runar could properly begin, Nyla and Celestia exchanged a brief glance. It was Celestia who spoke first, her voice gentle.

”So that time has finally come already, huh?”

Runar let out an awkward laugh and rubbed the back of his neck. The gesture felt familiar, almost grounding.

”Well... I guess you already figured it out.”

Cassia said nothing, but her eyes showed she had reached the same conclusion. She simply waited, patient as always.

Runar looked out at the water for a moment before continuing. The words came more carefully than he expected.

”I need to leave for a while. My main body has to continue into the deeper parts of the multiversal void. There’s still too much I need to understand and too many things I need to become strong enough to face. I can’t take all of you with me yet. The dangers out there are still beyond what any of you should have to deal with.”

He turned back to them so they could see the sincerity in his expression.

”I will leave a clone behind. It won’t be a simple projection. The clone will be me in every way that matters—body and soul. We will remain fully linked. You can ask him anything about my current situation, and I will know. If something happens, or if you simply need me, I can return instantaneously. I already know the space-time coordinates of this entire sector.”

He paused, then added more quietly, ”I don’t want to go. But I have to. One day I want the strength to take all of you with me without worrying that the void itself might erase you. Until then, this is the best I can do.”

Celestia reached over and rested her hand on his. Her voice remained steady, though her fingers tightened slightly.

”We knew this was coming. You’ve never been the type to stay still for long once there was a clear path forward.”

Nyla leaned against his other side, her tone lighter but carrying an undercurrent of reluctance. ”Just don’t disappear for decades without a word. Even if the clone is still you, I want the real version to come back and tell us the stupid stories in person.”

Celestia faced him with a serious face. ”Make sure that the clone link will be enough for practical matters. Just make sure the clone is stable enough that we don’t have to worry about it degrading while you’re gone.”

”It will be,” Runar promised. ”I won’t leave you with anything less than that.”

In the background, further up the beach, Jake, Lirien, Caspian, Seraphina and Cassia watched the conversation from a respectful distance. They did not interrupt. They had all lived long enough to recognize the shape of a necessary farewell, even when it was temporary. Lirien’s expression was complicated—pride mixed with the quiet ache of a mother watching her son step further into a world she could not follow. Jake stood with his arms crossed, quiet, his gaze steady on the four figures by the water. Caspian and Seraphina remained close to each other, offering silent support simply by being present. None of them needed to hear the words to understand what was being said.

The sun continued its slow descent. The colors across the water deepened into rich purples and fading gold. For a long time after the main points had been spoken, the four of them simply sat together on the sand, listening to the waves. No one tried to fill the silence with unnecessary words. The bond between them did not need to be restated.

Runar looked at each of them in turn—at Celestia’s calm acceptance, at Nyla’s reluctant but genuine understanding—and quietly strengthened his resolve.

One day, none of them would have to stay behind.

Until that day arrived, he would keep moving forward.
