High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1436: Chapter 183 Kunpeng Hunting Team

”Xianqin Hunting Group’s independent hunting team—Kunpeng Hunting Team!”

”Team Leader Zhang Boren, team members Zhu Ling, Ishikawa Ukyo, Balin, Mai Dong.”

”Reporting for enlistment upon summons.”

The leading warlock flipped back his hood, revealing a reddish-brown face, while pressing a draft order onto the registration desk in front of the registrar, his voice somewhat deep.

Whew!

Eric’s fingers twitched slightly, and the feather pen that was already standing by swiftly landed on the ledger, swiftly recording the names reported by the warlock.

Only, as the names were being written, they were black, but once registration was complete, the inscriptions all turned a glowing green.

Green signified approval.

If the names became red, then Eric would have to ring the warning bell at the corner of the table.

Observing the green color, the young apprentice registrar quietly breathed a sigh of relief, unsure if it was disappointment or fortitude. Then, he finally noticed a small detail he had been ignoring all along.

He lowered his head, counted the names on the ledger again, and then looked up, verifying each one.

And checked once more.

”Ahem,” Eric coughed softly to catch Team Leader Zhang’s attention, then gestured with his eyes: ”You just mentioned that there are a total of five team members...”

He held up four fingers, indicating that he only saw four people.

”Oh, a slip-up, a slip-up.” Zhang Boren raised his large fan-like hand to scratch his head, chuckled sheepishly, and opened his cloak to reveal what he had been cradling inside.

It was a little witch, apparently about ten years old, sound asleep in his arms. Her two small legs hung limply outside, seemingly without sensation.

The witch behind Zhang Boren stepped forward, tucked the cloak in the captain’s arms, and covered the little witch’s legs.

”This is Mai Dong, our hunting team’s Left Assistant Hunter.” After confirming her identity, Team Leader Zhang meticulously closed the cloak again and apologetically smiled at the young registrar: ”...Her health is rather delicate, and the recent battle consumed a lot of her energy, so we administered a potion to let her rest for a while.”

Eric showed an expression of understanding.

Many hunting teams now favor recruiting such ’specially-abled’ wizards; their basic skills might be somewhat lacking, yet they are popular because of certain talents that allow them to use magic far surpassing the level of registered wizards.

Then he shook his head again.

”Black Prison is not a place for recuperation,” he picked up a small wooden mallet and struck a small brass bell hanging on a small frame in front of him, reminding: ”...And being summoned to Black Prison isn’t a minor matter. If it’s confirmed that one’s health is bad, one must report to the school in advance to avoid any mishaps at the critical moment.”

As he spoke, a wizard in a black robe, different from most other wizards’ robes with its collar standing high, covering up to just below his nose, his forehead smooth and hair somewhat gray, answered the bell’s call and appeared at the front desk.

”Brother Ren,” he nodded at the leader of the Kunpeng Hunting Team, then looked towards each of the hunters in turn: ”Sister Zhu is well... Ishikawa, Balin... and where is Mai Dong?”

Zhang Boren gently patted the bulging ’package’ on his chest.

The warlock gave him a serious look but said nothing.

The dwarf at the end of the line, growing impatient, pushed forward and tugged at the team leader’s robe: ”Let him have a look; you know well enough Zhang Yu’s quirk... If you don’t reassure him, he could pester you all night!”

Team Leader Zhang Boren sighed heavily and unwrapped his cloak once again.

This time, not only did he reveal the little witch’s head, but also her wrist.

The wizard in charge of the inspection stretched out a finger, picked up the little witch’s wrist, and after a moment of silence said: ”She’s a bit weak, but it’s not a big deal... Professor Li Qihuang is in White Tower City, he has just prepared a Recovery Potion today.”

”I heard you’ve become the leader of the Assistant Team?” Team Leader Zhang Boren wrapped up the ’bundle’ in his arms again, tightened his cloak, then teased by patting the warlock on the shoulder: ”Out of our generation, you’re doing the best.”

”Half your hair has turned white, it’s hard to see what’s good about that,” the witch behind him muttered under her breath.

”I’m only an Assistant Team Leader, not the team leader.” Zhang Yu spoke with his usual calm, neither delighted by Zhang Boren’s flattery nor offering a retort to Zhu Ling’s taunt: ”...The deans have been waiting in the conference room for a long time. You need to provide a reasonable explanation for your previous adventure in the Land of Desolation.”

”I knew it.” The leader of Kunpeng Hunting Team turned around to look at his team members: ”I knew those old fogeys would make a fuss about this... How about we head back to the New World first? We clearly won that divine battle, yet we were the ones who retreated. It makes me angry just thinking about it!”

The witch behind him pushed her team leader back.

”I don’t want to spend the second half of my life with an arrest warrant issued by Danghag hanging over me.” She replied coldly: ”Evading the school’s draft order is illegal. You insisted on taking the adventure, now you have to take the corresponding responsibility.”

”I just don’t like the gloomy atmosphere of the Black Prison.” The leader of Kunpeng Hunting Team feigned a shiver: ”How can anyone like staying in a place like this!”

Henry Eric rolled his eyes.

Although the other person was a well-known powerhouse of the newer generation, it didn’t mean he appreciated being looked down upon in his line of work.

”Black Prison is like a wizard, liking it doesn’t mean you have to accept everything about it.” The trainee registrar tapped the desk with his feather pen and repeated the fancy words taught to him by the elders with a stern face: ”...You just have to try to focus on its bright spots, and you can ignore the creepy atmosphere.”

The leader of Kunpeng Hunting Team was stunned for a second.

Then the witch behind him pushed his head down to apologize to the young trainee registrar:

”Sorry, my fault.”

”No... No, it’s okay.” Eric was somewhat flustered as he waved his hand, he was just instinctively defending the dignity of a Black Prison worker.

Not until the group disappeared into the depths of the ancient castle’s corridor.

Did the trainee registrar finally catch his breath.

”Indeed, an excellent wizard excels in every aspect.” He sighed deeply, sat back in his seat, then rubbed his face, took off the monocle perched on his nose, stretched, and prepared to take another short nap.

In the corridor, the faint voices of young wizards arguing could be heard.

”...Ignoring flaws doesn’t mean they disappear.” It was the dwarf’s gruff voice: ”Pretending not to see faults is like burying one’s head in the sand.”

”That’s not the point!” The witch replied patiently: ”Respect and courtesy, that’s the core of the conversation just now.”

”Was I disrespectful just now?”

”Yes.”

”Extremely rude!”

”Oh... my mistake. Sorry...”

The trainee registrar lying on the desk, eyes closed, showed a faint smile on his face.
