High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1424: Chapter 171 Recruitment

The words of the Female Demon ignited the wrath of the Calamity Fight Group.

The sulfur smell pervading the surroundings became increasingly intense; although no visible flames were seen, the air seemed to ignite under the moonlight, twisting and flowing, blurring the scene in the forest clearing.

One, two, three – more and more black dogs emerged from the shrubbery, baring their teeth, with lava-like drool dribbling from their mouths, staring with malicious and fiery red eyes at the two unwelcome intruders who had recklessly entered Calamity Fight Group territory.

”I really like your eyes.”

Nikita seemed completely oblivious to the dangerous environment they were in, her gaze passed Furry Bean and Buck to look at an old Houdou with grizzled fur, and she cheerfully said, ”They possess the red of enlightenment as much as the warmth of a love for life... truly, a combination of Wizard and Demon.”

This compliment did nothing to diminish the Houdous’ hostility towards her.

More and more great Houdous appeared around, baring their teeth and grimacing, eyeing the Female Demon’s weak points with vigilance, ready to pounce, just waiting for the old Houdou of the group to give the order.

But the reason why an old Houdou could become an old Houdou is because they are cautious enough through the years, and never engage in pointless battles with any completely unknown enemy.

”Strangers, you are not welcome here. We hope you will leave.”

The old Houdou spoke gruffly, yet its attitude was very gentle: ”We are just a group of Wanderers who stay away from trouble... only wishing to live quietly and safely in this forest.”

Nikita laughed.

She spread her arms wide, as if embracing the moon on the horizon that was about to disappear, as if embracing the entire Silent Forest: ”There’s often an invisible chasm between thought and reality. This forest is vast enough to accommodate a mythological world... but this forest is also quite small, so small that any stir outside the forest can be known by those hiding in the deepest parts. If wandering could solve problems, then the World would be far too simple.”

”Even if you are willing to live quietly in the forest, you have to face a challenge that can’t be ignored: this paradise is a bit overcrowded. Under the trees, the insects; on the tree trunks, the vines; atop the trees, the birds; within the forest, the beasts; under the water, the fish... every corner of paradise is crammed with the inhabitants of this island. Every moment, conflicts arise over food and living space...”

As she spoke, she raised her toes and crushed a three-legged frog that was crawling in front of her:

”... follow me, and I will set the entire forest ablaze, to be your warmest nest.”

Furry Bean clearly heard Buck’s breathing beside him become rapid. For a group of Houdou, nothing was more alluring than a raging fire, and nothing more desirable than igniting the entire Silent Forest.

”Why should we believe you?” the old Houdou voiced the inner voice of all the Houdous.

The Female Demon did not answer.

Instead, she turned around and started walking back into the depths of Silent Forest with her companion.

”You don’t need to believe me, or any other fellow.” Her figure gradually disappeared into the darkness, but her voice echoed in the ears of all the Houdous: ”You just need to believe in yourselves... When the sun and moon hang upside down, and the starlight scatters, when the entire Silent Forest begins to struggle for freedom, just follow your own hearts.”

The Houdous stood still, the fierce teeth at the corners of their mouths quietly retracted, and the red glow in their eyes gradually faded away.

The young could not comprehend the deep meaning of the Female Demon’s words, mistaking the crisis to be over, one by one, they crawled out from behind the great Houdous, playing and laughing; the great Houdous understood the implication of the Female Demon’s words, each one stirred with excitement; but the old Houdous gathered in twos and threes, anxious and worried.

It took Buck a while, still excited, to remember the grey-skinned ’Houdou’ who had joined the group earlier that night. He quickly looked around, but where could he see its figure now?

Furry Bean, the moment the Witch disappeared into the shadows of the trees, followed silently without a trace.

The Talent of space-time prowess was exerted to its fullest at this moment. Unnoticed by the Calamity Fight Group, and without the Female Demons detecting its pursuit.

Gouzi hid in the cracks of angled space-time, spying on the two figures weaving through the forest, always ready to ambush that faceless fellow.

As soon as they left the territory of the Houdou, the Female Demons relaxed considerably.

Their speech no longer carried the mysterious and fierce temperament of before, but now it had a touch of laziness.

”The next Clan is the Centaur Tribe, and it’s your turn to step forward.” Nikita, with her hands behind her head, looked up at the star-filled sky and lazily said to her companion, ”It can’t always be me showing up... This is the captains’ duty, and we all have obligations.”

She placed an extra emphasis on the words ’the captains’.

Nameless followed her silently, and after a long while, his hoarse voice replied slowly, ”If you... think it’s... appropriate, then that’s... fine. I... have no... objections...”

”Can you not speak with another mouth?” Finally not able to contain herself, Nikita stopped in her tracks, turned to her companion, and complained loudly, ”You have to gasp four or five times for just one sentence, don’t you find speaking this exhausting?”

Nameless hesitated for a moment.

Then, he took out a small eyebrow pencil, a lipstick, and a small piece of a mirror from his pocket and, in the dim moonlight, he began to draw on his face.

After a short period.

A second Nikita’s voice came from the woods:

”How about now? How does it feel?”

”It’s apparent, the captains really spoil you,” Nikita said, looking at the mouth in front of her that resembled her own, with downcast eyelids, she sighed softly, ”With such a strong provocative ability... it really hasn’t been easy for you growing up.”

”Provo... cative?” The new lips of Nameless formed a puzzled expression, the tone full of confusion, ”Is it? I thought you would definitely accept the speed of your own speech... and the voice.”

Nikita waved her hand, not wishing to argue on this topic with the ignorant Little monster by her side.

She looked up at the sky.

It was already after midnight. The moon had set behind the distant mountains, and its light was fading to invisibility.

Nikita spread her fingers towards the brightest star in the sky.

The star was pinched between her middle finger and ring finger, with its brilliant starlight shining through the gaps, as if a gemstone-decorated gorgeous ring was worn on her hand, dazzlingly bright.

She slowly closed her five fingers, clenching them into a fist.

As if she had also grasped that glimmer of starlight.

”What are you doing?” Nameless was curious about the actions of the Female Demon, mimicking her while casually asking, ”You haven’t said why you took such a huge risk coming to the Silent Forest... it’s practically walking into a trap.”

”A beast trapped in a snare will bite off its own leg to escape... If it were you, what would you do?”

”As long as my face is okay... it doesn’t matter if I lose the leg... just lose it then,” responded Nameless.

”That’s what I thought too,” Nikita gave a slight smile.

The two Female Demons finally reached an agreement on a certain understanding.
