High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1415: Chapter 162: Listening to the Tide (Part 5)

The sunlight vanished in an instant.

Outside the cabin, a grey-white fog quickly enveloped and devoured that touch of warmth.

Nikita’s slightly bewildered eyes under the sunlight regained tranquility, the demonic crimson shimmering once more.

”Fog is rising, huh.”

She murmured, pushing away the chair beneath her and stood up.

Each time the fog rose, it signaled a voyage far and wide.

Nikita still remembered the distant day, when she first boarded the Mist Ship, fog had also risen. That day, she followed the captain, traveling afar on the calm sea, meeting the other three legendary captains.

The captains of the Whirlpool Ship, the Poseidon Ship, and the Iceberg Ship.

After that day, she rarely had the chance to leave the ship again.

As the fog rose and fell, the Female Demon watched from the small cabin window as the Mist Ship sailed through blue, red, and black waters, and even through a star-strewn void; she watched the world outside transition from ferns to deciduous forests, from silent glaciers to an even more silent starry sky; she watched the Mist Ship’s fighters pacing back and forth, where those legendary Demons lay prostrate at the feet of the captain.

But all along, she could only watch with envy.

Because she was just a cook on the Mist Ship, having boarded less than a year ago. The old crew once told her, rookies must weather three to five years, before they might have a chance to disembark, or organize their own fighting crew to hunt in other new worlds.

”Uncle knows what you are sighing about.”

Harry, dressed in a pink POLO shirt and floral shorts, slipped in through the doorway like an eel, sliding along the deck and walls, all the way to the ceiling.

Then he hung upside-down from a beam under the ceiling, stuck out his tongue like a hanged ghost, and blinked his peachy eyes at Nikita: ”Good girl, call me ’uncle,’ and uncle will grant you a wish!”

Nikita narrowed her alluring, elongated eyes.

Even though she was a newbie, she was indeed a bona fide Female Demon, already a Registered witch before she transformed.

Female Demons are very fierce; without that fierceness, one cannot survive in this cannibalistic world.

She slightly opened her mouth, her face breaking into a charming smile, her nostrils flaring slightly, resembling a girl in the throes of a passionate romance, waiting for her boyfriend’s kiss. Only, the increasingly dense crimson in her eyes made everyone witnessing this scene feel a chill in their hearts.

”Say it again,” she said to the guest in a soft voice.

”So scary, oh my, you’re scaring the baby.” Harry twisted strangely upwards, hanging in mid-air as if to avoid the Female Demon’s gaze, while patting his chest: ”Alright, alright, I’ll stop teasing you... The captain’s calling for you. Be smart... This time he might take you off the ship, you know!”

Nikita’s pupils shrank sharply, her heart beating uncontrollably and violently for a few moments.

Harry wanted to say more, but the Female Demon in front of him turned into little afterimages and disappeared on the spot.

The hanging Demon smacked his lips and shook his head.

”Be stable,” it lectured the air solemnly: ”You’re already a mature demon, you need to learn to be steady. Know how to be steady? Don’t leave earlier than your elders, that’s being steady!”

After speaking, it silently slipped from the ceiling to the floor, nostrils flaring, and his eyes lit up looking at the cupboards.

”Just a tiny bit.” It rubbed its hands as if it were a fly about to land on a delicious treat, snickered: ”...Cooked food is, after all, meant to be eaten by Demons. Just a tiny bit... Consider it a fee for running errands. Not too much, right?”

...

...

Nikita did not know that a Big Mouse had sneaked into her kitchen.

Of course, even if she knew about it, she wouldn’t care. She would simply mention the mice in the kitchen to the one-legged old man in charge of the Deadly Wind Lamp—believing that he would catch the mouse and then hang it on the mast to dry for a week.

As for now.

The Female Demon was crouching at the doorway of the captain’s cabin, trembling.

Not far in front of her on the floor, a blood-red strip of cloth lay scattered.

The strip was somewhat old, covered with dense talismans, and also stained with suspicious dark red traces; it looked dirty. But in the eyes of the Female Demon, that strip of cloth was even more beautiful than her prettiest dress.

Because that was the protective band that only crew members entitled to disembark from the Mist Ship would own.

The strip was close to her, within reach.

She very much wanted to reach out and grab it, to hide it in her bosom.

But before the captain spoke, she dared not make the slightest move.

The captain of the Mist Ship paid no attention to the young Female Demon’s intense inner turmoil, as it furrowed its brows in concentration, carefully pondering the ancient scroll before it, its cyan-black fingertips lightly gliding over the Gold and Silver Runes on the parchment, producing a trail of brilliant sparks.

”Not enough... Indeed, still not enough.”

Eventually, it let out a sigh, lowering its head, looking down at the Witch cowering at its feet, its voice as gentle as ever: ”I remember Ulysses was your teacher?”

The ’teacher’ it referred to was Nikita’s mentor after she became a Demon. It was due to Sir Ulysses’s teachings that the Female Demon escaped the pitiful fate of eating insects and transformed into the sad state of feeding on dead human bodies.

Of course, if the teacher himself could also feed on living wizards now, perhaps he would be pleased.

A sorrowful thought crossed Nikita’s mind.

”Yes, Your Excellency.” She bowed her head in respectful submission.

”Very good.” The fingers of the Mist Ship’s captain twitched slightly, and the red strip of cloth on the floor floated up, flying towards the Female Demon, finally landing on her arm, wrapping around twice, and forming a pretty butterfly knot:

”I plan to visit the Witch Demon Forest; you may escort me and by the way, pay a visit to your teacher.”

That was the last sentence the Female Demon heard in the captain’s cabin.

The next moment, her vision blurred.

When she came back to her senses, she was already back in her own kitchen.

The cabin was as before—dim, lightless, disgustingly yet irresistibly filled with the scent of blood. Only the red strip of cloth on her arm told her that everything that had just happened was real.

Outside the window, the sound of the tide as usual.

...

...

”The undercurrent is surging.”

In a spacious office, a voice sighed deeply.

The office was large but windowless, surrounded by bare walls. Despite a few writings and some paintings on the walls, where birds chirped silently as they hopped about the branches, adding a touch of vitality to the originally oppressive atmosphere.

Speaking was the thin little old man seated behind the desk to the left.

He wore a thick black woolen robe and had a pair of pitch-black eyes. On the desk lay a cup of clear tea, a worn-out Wizard Hat, and beside the desk stood a silver cane with a wolf’s head.

If Korma or Nikita stood here, they would surely recognize that the old man was none other than Vice Principal Ruoyu of the First University.
