High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1401: Chapter 148 Miskatonic

”The Professor and I had an appointment to meet at noon today...”

”I’m asking you what the matter is?!”

”... Professor Montreya asked me to...”

”The Professor is busy. You know the rules. Speak quickly if you have something to say; the Professor will help you when he has time. If there’s nothing else, I have to return to my experiment... There’s nobody at the workbench now!”

His words were fast and pressing, but hearing this, Zheng Qing could somewhat guess the frustration burning in the heart of the warlock before him. A wizard who was interrupted during an experiment must feel similar to being disturbed while asleep.

He dared not dawdle any longer and pulled a test tube from his pocket:

”I was hoping the Professor could help check the blood inside...”

Before he could finish speaking, Zheng Qing only saw a blur before his eyes, and the next moment, the test tube was already in the hands of the warlock.

”Be careful!” The young sponsored student exclaimed, ”That blood is a bit strange...”

”Who would bring normal blood here? We have seen stranger blood.” The black-robed wizard spoke with a hint of disdain but his expression grew serious. He easily sensed the oppressive aura emanating from the ’amber’ inside the test tube: ”... Is it sealed by a Big Wizard? Hmm, from the Qingqiu Clan?”

Zheng Qing felt a surge of respect.

”Yes.” He responded honestly.

To make so many deductions in such a short time, this black-robed individual must be top-notch even among Registered Wizards.

”This blood is from a legitimate source, I hope.” The black-robed wizard cautiously warned: ”The Qingqiu Clan, though low-key within the Alliance, remains one of the most powerful Clans of the Moon Council...”

Zheng Qing quickly realized that there might be some misunderstanding.

”Absolutely legitimate!” The young sponsored student gave a firm answer.

”That’s good... We will inform you directly once we have the results. If there’s nothing else, you can go now.” The black-robed wizard gave the young man a brief nod, tucked the test tube into his robe pocket, and before Zheng Qing could react, he closed the door with a ’bang’.

Clean and efficient.

The young wizard stood there, stunned.

The Door Ring Beast on the bronze small door sighed at him, a rarity.

”Take it easy, young man.” The Door Ring Beast comforted him with a voice filled with a sense of time: ”I’ve been door watching for so many years; his temper today is actually quite mild... There are researchers with truly nasty tempers who would cast horrible curses if their experiments were disturbed.”

Zheng Qing took a deep breath.

”He won’t throw away my test tube, will he?” He muttered with some worry.

”That’s unlikely.” The Door Ring Beast struggled to lift its head, making the door knocker creak: ”These kids might have bad tempers, but they keep their word... They wouldn’t be malicious on purpose.”

Zheng Qing lingered at the door for a long time, but in the end, he didn’t dare to knock again and left dejectedly.

The entire process lasted less than half an hour.

It was much quicker than he had anticipated.

It looked like he wouldn’t need Xin Fat Man’s help to submit his Magic Script homework after all.

...

...

As it turned out, the Door Ring Beast was quite reliable.

After the Magic Script class ended in the afternoon, Professor Emma had just left the classroom when a blue Paper Crane flew in through the window and landed on Zheng Qing’s shoulder, pecking viciously at his ear.

”Ouch,” the Warlock dodged the Paper Crane’s assault, grabbing its wings with one hand, while rubbing his ear with the other, complaining, ”Whose Paper Crane is this? So impolite?!”

Unfortunately, the Paper Crane couldn’t speak and didn’t answer his question.

Zheng Qing unfolded the paper, and on the top was a line of sloppy cursive, ’Regarding the test report of Sample No. 0602’, below which was a line of neat small print: Testing by [Montreya Bloodline Research Laboratory].

Zheng Qing suddenly realized.

It was the blood test result for the dog.

This was much faster than he had anticipated; he had been prepared to wait until the weekend to receive the test report.

The main content of the test report was filled with dense numbers and symbols, directly making one’s head spin. The Young Wizard’s gaze skipped over the content he couldn’t understand and directly slid to the end of the paper—only there could he understand the contents.

The conclusion read:

”After testing, it is confirmed that approximately 99% of the information in the sample belongs to ordinary canine breeds, including about 31% Pug, 17% Britannia Bulldog, 9% Yorkshire Terrier, 3% Bordeaux Dog, with the remaining roughly 40% being of mixed origin, requiring additional samples for repeated comparative testing.”

”Additionally, approximately 1% of the test information displays Magical Creature characteristics, confirmed to be related to the Outer God Miskatonic, attributable to distant non-dominant inheritance, but activated due to special reasons.”

The simple conclusion ended there, abrupt and inconclusive, leaving Zheng Qing puzzled.

He flipped the paper over.

The back was empty except for faint magic patterns visible through the paper, without further explanation.

”What’s this, watching so intently?” Xin Fat Man’s greasy presence came from his side, making Zheng Qing feel suffocated.

”Back off!” He pushed Fat Man away and passed the paper over: ”I had Professor Montreya’s laboratory help test the dog’s blood... The results are out, but I can’t make sense of them. Can you understand it?”

”A test report from Montreya Laboratory?”

”You got hold of the dog?”

Fat Man and Xiao Xiao asked simultaneously without coordination. Fat Man was interested in the report from the infamous lab involved with taboo experiments, while Xiao Xiao was curious how Zheng Qing got the dog’s blood sample.

Zheng Qing couldn’t tell them that Su Shijun had helped—that would get him beaten to death.

”...Used a little trick; you know, that dog took an interest in me,” the Young Wizard replied vaguely, then immediately switched topics: ”Perfect, I have a question for you, Doctor, do you know the name Miskatonic? It seems to be another Outer God.”

As expected, Xiao Xiao’s attention was immediately captured by the name: ”Miskatonic?”

He pressed his hand on his black-shelled notebook, fondling it for a bit, his face revealing a hint of realization: ”Miskatonic... No wonder, no wonder... You mean to say, that little dog has Miskatonic bloodline, right.”

Zheng Qing raised his eyebrows in surprise.

Because the report was still in Fat Man’s hands, the Doctor had not yet seen its contents.

”How do you know!” he asked eagerly: ”Is that guy famous? Does He have many descendants? Would He want to descend upon this World like Satoguya or Nicolas, using the power of His followers?”

”On the contrary,” Xiao Xiao adjusted his glasses, denying: ”Miskatonic is famously detached, almost without any followers; even among warlocks, few are aware of... He prefers picking quarrels with other Outer Gods rather than playing with us ants. But that does not mean He is not well-known. Perhaps you have heard His other name, Fenrir.”
