High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1420: Chapter 167 Furry Bean

To be honest, compared to ”Little Grey,” the name ”Sour Fruit” does sound a bit more sophisticated.

The only problem is that whenever Zheng Qing hears the name ”Sour Fruit,” he can’t help but think of Juice, and that little girl trapped in the World in the Mirror.

”No way.”

He shook his head, rejecting Fatty’s suggestion without giving a reason.

”Are you planning to waste an entire night naming Gouzi like last time when you named the Absolution Hunting Team? If not...”

Zheng Qing finally couldn’t stand it anymore, interrupted Fatty abruptly, and roared, ”I don’t have so many ’plans,’ are you ’planning’ to spend all night discussing my ’plans’? Can we change the term? Count how many times you’ve used the word ’plan’ since we started!”

Fatty was startled by Zheng Qing’s roar, and the chicken popcorn he was chewing suddenly slipped into his throat, almost choking him. He pounded his chest hard.

The two little Sprites quickly brought over a cup of water.

Zheng Qing finally felt a little relieved.

”Furry Bean,” taking advantage of Fatty’s silence, Xiao Xiao offered his suggestion: ”I remember a nursery rhyme ’Soy Duck, Mung Frog, Black Gouzi, Red Shrimp, and a big Winter Melon’... in the lyrics, Gouzi is called Black Bean.”

”Where did this nursery rhyme come from? I’ve never heard of it before.”

”Most children in the wizarding world know it, I guess.” Fatty regained his composure, and somehow pulled out a handful of roasted soybeans, stuffing them into his mouth and explained murkily:

”It talks about a duck the size of a soybean, a frog the size of a mung bean, a Gouzi the size of a black bean, riding a red PeePee Shrimp, dragging a big winter melon, going on an adventure in the Dark Forest...”

”I’m not interested in fairy tales.” Zheng Qing waved his hand, yawned loudly, and made a final decision: ”Since that’s the case... let’s combine your suggestions and name it Furry Bean.”

”Furry Bean? How did you come up with that term? If you said Grey Bean, I could still understand...”

”Furry, as in the fur from the Cat Fruit Tree; Bean, from Black Bean.”

”Can ’cat’ and ’fur’ be the same?”

”Do cats not have fur? Stop splitting hairs...”

...

...

While the roommates in dorm 403 were endlessly arguing over the name of Gouzi, Gouzi—now perhaps should be called ’Furry Bean’—was silently moving around the campus of the First University.

It forgot where it came from, whether it was a student’s pet, whether it had an owner; it even forgot when its ’consciousness’ was born.

All it remembered was that at the very first moment its ’self-consciousness’ was born, a young wizard appeared before it.

Hmm, there seemed to be another wizard’s presence nearby, but Furry Bean’s impression wasn’t strong.

Deeply ingrained in its consciousness was the instinct to chase.

The power flowing from deep within its bloodline constantly warned it that this World was very dangerous. Several times, it faintly sensed dangerous eyes silently observing it. Even when it hid in the folds of temporal space, that bone-clinging sensation couldn’t fade away. Only by staying close to the young wizard would that gaze relent a bit.

This simple and rudimentary thought mingled with the instinct of a Magical Creature, making Furry Bean cling tightly to the wizard. From under the Cat Fruit Tree, to the lecture halls, all the way to the dormitories.

The sense of crisis interacting with the power of magic stimulated Furry Bean to grow swiftly.

Countless duplicates hidden in the temporal crevices proved to be the best aid in growth. This growth encompassed not only mastering its talents but also understanding the Magical World, and recognizing wizards and common knowledge.

In just a few days, it transformed from a clueless Gouzi into a Hunting Dog well-acquainted with the elements of survival.

But as much as Talent can contribute to success, it can also lead to failure.

Talent helped it grow rapidly, but its bloodline confined the height it could reach.

To break free from this boundary, it smelled only one path.

That was to chase after the Warlock who could liberate its own bloodline.

The enticing scent emanating from deep within the Warlock’s soul, as if encapsulating the flavors of the entire World, suggested that a few more sniffs might loosen the shackles bound within its bloodline.

For a cunning Tingdalous Hunting dog, pinpointing a life goal was of utmost importance.

It made it feel secure.

To maintain this sense of security, it had to continually prove its worth.

Catching frogs was to show its worth; catching ducks, catching another wizard, and even seeking out the fearsome Black Mountain Goat, were all to demonstrate its value.

Now, the Warlock had given it a new task—to find a snake.

This was no easy feat.

Because the snake had left many traces in every corner of the campus, under the influence of Magic and time, these traces had become blurred and elusive, requiring it to discern every minute difference in the lingering scents.

Just like it was sniffing now at the muddy pond on the East Shore of Linzhong Lake.

The snake had left a very strong scent in the pond, indicating that it had hidden there for a long time. But the fragmented scent also told Furry Bean that the snake had already left.

—Beneath its paws, it pressed down on a piece of withered Turtle Shell, hollow inside, whose original owner had long perished from this World, and the subsequent uninvited guests had also vanished days ago.

Following the dark river between the pond and Linzhong Lake, disappearing into the tranquil depths of Silent Forest.

Should it chase beyond the school, Furry Bean hesitated slightly.

Not long ago, it had recklessly left the school to catch the Black Mountain Goat—emitting a fear-inducing scent—relying on its Talent and the aid of the dog pack, it boldly attacked the Black Goat but almost got caught by the tentacles on the goat and stuffed into its mouth.

Though it eventually managed to tear a few tufts of wool from the Black Goat, the summoned copies from the temporal rift suffered heavy losses, nearly twenty of them devoured by the Black Goat.

As Furry Bean wrestled with its thoughts, the sound of unfamiliar wizards walking and talking came from the corridor beside the pond.

Gouzi silently shifted its shape, hiding in the shadow between the corridor column and a bush, pretending not to exist.

The voices grew closer, and the topics of the wizards’ conversation became clearer:

”... The people from Alpha said that Blood Comrades has almost confirmed Sepulano as the next Augustus, just waiting for the final exams to end before the inauguration speech, our side’s Lei Zhe still doesn’t know who it will be.”

”Elwin is a Half-blood Werewolf; although that’s not a big flaw in Jiuyou, becoming Lei Zhe could be difficult. Zhao Qiao’s Hunting team’s performance is also worse than Uncle Zhang Zhi’s...”

”We’re choosing the chairman of Sacred Will, not the best hunter, so what if the Hunting Competition score is a bit low.”

”Don’t forget, Uncle Zhi is a child of the Zhang family; they definitely have the capability to manipulate things behind the scenes.”

”Every gift from Destiny comes with a hidden price tagged. If Uncle Zhi uses his family’s power to become the new Lei Zhe this time, then next time he will have to use the power of Sacred Will to repay his family’s gift...”

The unfamiliar wizards’ discussion and footsteps gradually faded away.

Gouzi emerged from the shadows of the bush, its eyes flickering as it glanced at the retreating backs of the young wizards, and finally made up its mind, its figure vanishing on the deserted lakeside.

Indeed, every gift from Destiny must be returned to Destiny at the right time.
