Chapter 775: Chapter 343, Deals, Deals Everywhere (Part 2)

Ugoer Bow Cavalry?!

Both Francois and Duke Bodric in attendance had a sparkle in their eyes.

Brittania, the Knight Country, possesses the finest heavy cavalry in the Old World, and the power of these cavalry units needs no further elaboration.

However, since the national strategy chosen was to support the knights with all their might, the combat effectiveness of the army, other than the heavy cavalry, is naturally low.

It doesn’t matter if the infantry isn’t strong enough, because the outcome of the war is still decided by the knights’ group charges.

As for light cavalry, Brittania has rangers promoted from the peasant infantry corp. These rangers often hold privileged positions like prison guards, patrol officers, and militia captains. Their status is on par with or slightly higher than that of sergeants, making it the ultimate goal for a peasant’s lifetime. For a peasant infantryman, it may require years of dedicated service and outstanding battlefield performance, and they must encounter a just Knight Lord to gain promotion.

These rangers are unlikely to have the chance to ride the sturdy warhorses of the Master Knights, but being able to ride a farm horse and charge alongside the Master Knights on the battlefield is a supreme honor. Many legends speak of rangers being promoted to knights after many years of exceptional service and brave performance.

In fact, from the founding of Brittania to the present millennium, only five peasants have been promoted to nobility, and strictly, only three have been promoted from peasants to nobility with knighthood titles.

For a peasant to be promoted to a knight, two procedures are needed: one is the King’s Order, and the other is the Oracle of the Lake Fairy—the double acknowledgment to be promoted.

To digress, what really appeals to Laine and the others is that even among the rangers, those who can ride and shoot are very few. In fact, except for the Montfort Watchers, a ranger team under Duke of Montfort Fulcard known to Laine, no other Duke in Brittania has a decent ranger team capable of mounted archery.

(Theoretically, give someone a short bow and a horse, and they can ride and shoot; here, it refers to those who can maintain a certain hit rate)

In actual combat, having such a highly mobile bow cavalry will provide many conveniences in warfare.

The Ugoer Bow Cavalry of Kislev is such an army.

As previously introduced, the Kislev Kingdom is located to the north of the Empire, bordering the Chaos Wasteland and the Northern Wasteland. Generally speaking, the northern territorial line of Kislev is the Linsk River, from Erlengrad to Prague. However, many Kislev people also live on the opposite bank of the Linsk River. These people are known as the Ugoer.

The Ugoer are the first line of defense against the northern Chaos invasion. They have been at war with the Chaos-believing Northern Barbarian Tribes since birth. These brave and battle-hardened nomadic warriors learn horse archery, scimitar, and long spear techniques from an early age and are among the best light cavalry in the Old World.

”The Empire is willing to allow us to, uh... use the Ugoer Bow Cavalry?” Francois showed interest as Duke Winford stroked his goatee, a hint of interest appearing on his face: ”How can you persuade the Ugoer to serve us?”

Griffin Duke Ivan and Great Alchemist Geld exchanged a glance, thinking that Emperor Carl Franz’s prediction was correct; this condition could indeed persuade the Brittania people.

”Do you know about the Kislev Winged Cavalry Legion? This army now serves our Emperor, His Majesty.” Ivan spread his hands, and with a sense of pride, the Griffin Duke with black long hair and a long beard said: ”This strongest legion of Kislev currently serves under our Emperor, so why does Brittania think we can’t provide you with a team of Ugoer Bow Cavalry?”

”Hmm~” Laine now lowered his head, contemplating the causes and consequences.

After the Great Holy War, Kislev was nearly destroyed across the board, and even the Imperial Palace of the Tsar (unacknowledged) was destroyed by Chaos. At that time, Tsar Bokaha, deeply pained, realized that relying solely on the Kislev army could not constantly resist the threat of Chaos. He put forth all the wealth of the Tsar Family (unacknowledged), invested heavily to import a large number of firearms from the Empire, and hired Imperial Engineers at high salaries to train firearm teams.

Bokaha’s costly formation of musket teams nearly bankrupted the Kingdom’s finances, and Kislev could no longer afford to fund a long-standing legendary unit—the Winged Cavalry Legion. Already possessing a semi-independent status, the Winged Cavalry Legion became completely independent, this elite unit from the depths of the Kislev Kingdom served under the Emperor of the Empire for an extended period, swearing only to return to Kislev to face the threat of Chaos when their homeland faced a significant menace.

”Even the Winged Cavalry Legion serves under the Emperor, so how difficult could it be to decide on a team of Ugoer Bow Cavalry? It’s merely a matter of sending a letter,” Griffin Duke Ivan simply stated: ”Many people are willing to go to war, especially those Ugoer tribes north of the Linsk River who can’t get enough food. Fighting to earn a meal is already commonplace for them.”

”So is this the Empire’s condition?” Francois seemed intrigued, but a bit skeptical: ”From what you say, we could also send people to hire the Ugoer Bow Cavalry.”

”No, I’m sorry, but I must directly and plainly tell you that hiring the Ugoer Bow Cavalry is not as simple as it seems,” White Wolf Prince-Elector Boris said sternly: ”You don’t understand at all how undisciplined the Ugoer Bow Cavalry is. Aside from working, they love to break into nearby villages and tribes to randomly find women and vent. Moreover, Kislev mandates that wherever they go, they must be provided with good food and drink. They have no laws, and even if you go to Kislev to hire Ugoers, I think the troubles they bring will far outweigh the benefits.”
