Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

16 August, 1947

South Block, Delhi

By eleven o’clock, the heavy heat inside the South Block main conference room had intensified. The large ceiling fans whirred overhead, churning the humid air without cooling it.

Ram stood at the head of a long oval table. Seated before him were the high-ranking military commanders who held the immediate fate of the Indian armed forces in their hands. On one side sat the outgoing British service chiefs: General Sir Rob Lockhart, Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army; Air Marshal Sir Thomas Elmhirst; and Rear Admiral John Talbot. On the other side sat their designated Indian successors: Major General K.M. Cariappa, Vice Admiral Ram Das Katari, and Vice Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee.

Ram remained standing, resting his hands lightly on the back of his chair, looking directly at the British officers.

”Gentlemen,” Ram began, his tone formal and sharp. ”I have called this meeting to formally express the appreciation of the Government of India for your service during this transition. The task of dividing regiments, artillery parks, naval craft, and supply depots between two new dominions while maintaining internal order is a heavy burden. You have handled it with professional discipline.”

General Lockhart bowed his head slightly. ”Thank you, Prime Minister. The situation along the border corridors remains fragile, but the boundary forces are doing everything within their capacity.”

”Which brings me to the core purpose of this gathering,” Ram said, his sharp gaze shifting to Cariappa, Katari, and Mukherjee. ”The era of transitional command is concluded. Effective immediately, full operational authority over the land, sea, and air forces of the Union of India will transfer entirely to Indian officers.”

A sudden, sharp silence fell over the room. Lockhart exchanged a quick, uncomfortable look with Elmhirst.

”Prime Minister,” Lockhart said cautiously, adjusting his posture. ”While we respect the authority of your government, the complete handover of operational command at this precise moment, while Partition migrations are at their violent peak, and the physical division of stores is far from complete, presents grave administrative risks. The British officers remaining in senior staff positions were intended to provide a stabilising command structure until at least mid-1948.”

”The British command structure was designed for an empire that is withdrawing,” Ram countered flatly. ”It is not designed for a sovereign republic that must secure its own borders today. An army cannot serve two masters, General. It cannot look to Whitehall for career security while taking operational directives from Delhi.”

Ram stepped around the table, stopping directly behind Major General Cariappa. He placed a hand firmly on the officer’s shoulder.

”Major General Cariappa will assume full operational command as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army,” Ram declared. ”Vice Admiral Katari will assume complete command of the Royal Indian Navy, and Vice Air Marshal Mukherjee will take charge of the Royal Indian Air Force.”

Cariappa sat bolt upright, his chest expanding, his jaw set like iron. ”We are ready, Prime Minister,” Cariappa said, his voice ringing with absolute military authority. ”The Indian officer corps is fully prepared to take command of every operational sector.”

”I know you are, General,” Ram said. He turned back to Lockhart and Elmhirst. ”Gentlemen, your remaining role will be strictly advisory. You will assist in finalising the physical division of military stores and managing the embarkation schedules for British troops returning to Europe. But operational decisions, troop movements, border security, strategic posture, and domestic deployments will originate exclusively from General Cariappa and his staff.”

Air Marshal Elmhirst nodded slowly, recognising the absolute finality in Ram’s voice. ”Understood, Prime Minister. We will ensure the advisory transition is handled seamlessly.”

”Thank you, Air Marshal,” Ram said. He turned his attention back to the three Indian commanders. ”Gentlemen, stay behind. The rest of you are dismissed.”

As the British officers gathered their portfolios and exited the room, Ram sat at the head of the table, gesturing for Cariappa, Katari, and Mukherjee to draw closer.

”No formal rhetoric here, gentlemen,” Ram said, his voice dropping into a low, sharp tone. ”The British leave behind an army structured as a colonial police force, designed to suppress internal riots and supply expeditionary infantry for British wars abroad. That model is dead. You must immediately begin restructuring our forces for high-intensity, total territorial defence.”

”Our primary vulnerability is air transport and heavy armour, Prime Minister,” Subroto Mukherjee noted briskly. ”The division of aircraft left us with barely a few operational Tempest squadrons, and spare parts are tied up in transit.”

”I am aware,” Ram said. ”Within forty-eight hours, Minister Nehru and V.K. Krishna Menon fly to Washington, while Sardar Patel travels to Moscow. We are securing massive credit lines and immediate allocations of surplus heavy transport, cold-weather equipment, and artillery. Your responsibility, Mukherjee, is to prepare the airfields in Punjab and Jammu to receive heavy transport aircraft on short notice.”

Cariappa’s eyes narrowed instantly at the mention of Jammu. ”Do you anticipate external military conflict in the princely states, Prime Minister?”

”I anticipate that weakness invites invasion, General,” Ram replied coolly. ”Maharaja Hari Singh in Kashmir is playing a foolish game of delay. Pakistan’s political leadership is growing desperate. If tribal irregulars or regular forces attempt to force a military fait accompli on our northern frontiers, I will not tolerate a sluggish, bureaucratic response. I want operational contingency plans for a rapid brigade-strength airlift to Srinagar drafted by tomorrow evening.”

Cariappa leaned forward, his hands resting heavily on the table. ”The plans will be on your desk by twenty-four-hundred hours tomorrow, Prime Minister.”

”Good,” Ram said, standing up. ”Gentlemen, take your command. Build an army that no empire will ever dare challenge again.”

By two o’clock in the afternoon, Ram had moved to the smaller committee room in the Secretariat’s eastern wing.

Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan sat waiting for him. The Minister for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs was dressed in his pristine white turban and long coat, his scholarly face composed, though his eyes betrayed intense curiosity.

”Prime Minister,” Radhakrishnan said, bowing his head slightly as Ram took his seat. ”The administrative setup of the ministry is moving forward. But I suspect you did not summon me here to review parliamentary schedules.”

”No, Radhakrishnan-ji,” Ram said, sliding two executive draft proposals across the polished table. ”We have two massive cultural and structural tasks that must be launched immediately, and they require your specific intellectual authority.”

Radhakrishnan looked at the title of the first document. ”The Sports Authority of India Act?”

”Precisely,” Ram said. ”I want you to draft and introduce legislation establishing a centralised, state-funded Sports Authority of India. Its immediate mandate will be two-fold. First, to provide absolute, uncompromising financial and logistical support to our athletic contingent for the upcoming 1948 London Olympics.

”Our field hockey team must not merely participate; they must crush the opposition. A resounding victory on the Olympic stage in London, eighteen months after independence, will do more for national self-confidence than a hundred political speeches.”

Radhakrishnan smiled faintly. ”A powerful psychological statement. And the second mandate?”

”Talent identification for the 1952 Games and beyond,” Ram detailed, tapping the paper. ”We must search our rural districts, our tribal belts, and our schools. We will focus capital investments on specific sports: Field Hockey, Cricket, Football, Swimming, Athletics, specifically track and field, Archery, Wrestling, Boxing, and traditional Indian sports like Kabaddi and Kho-Kho. We must build physical stamina, discipline, and competitive aggression into the very fabric of our national youth.”

”It shall be done,” Radhakrishnan agreed. ”A strong state requires a hardened youth. And the second task?”

Ram’s demeanour shifted, growing grimmer and far more intense. He leaned across the table, his gaze locking onto the scholar’s.

”The second task is spiritual and social cleansing,” Ram said softly. ”By the end of this calendar year, I require your ministry to produce a comprehensive legal and theological framework identifying every practice in Hinduism that constitutes a social evil, caste discrimination, untouchability, dowry, child marriage, and ritualistic oppression.”

Radhakrishnan raised his eyebrows slightly. ”Parsing scripture to reform social customs is a delicate manoeuvre, Ram Prasad. The orthodox elements, the Pandits and the traditional Sabhas, will scream that the secular state is waging war against the Hindu faith itself.”

”Then you must use scripture to destroy their arguments,” Ram countered with fierce, calculating conviction. ”The Hindu religion got ossified, defensive, and corrupted under centuries of foreign invasions and colonial rule. It retreated into rigid ritualism, caste insularity, and internal oppression, simply to survive. But now, the siege is lifted. If Hinduism does not modernise, if it does not violently cast off these barbaric accretions, our youth will abandon it for secular materialist ideologies or foreign Abrahamic creeds.”

Ram struck the desk with his open palm. ”We must prove that these social evils are not the core of our ancient ethos, but degenerations introduced during centuries of subjugation. Parse the Upanishads, parse the Vedas, parse the Gita, the Smritis, the Puranas, epics, everything. Ready a framework that decries caste oppression and social bigotry using our own ancient philosophical texts. The state will provide the legal hammer, Radhakrishnan-ji, but you must supply the moral anvil.”

Radhakrishnan remained silent for several seconds, his fingers tracing the edge of his white turban. A deep, resolute spark filled his eyes.

”To save the faith, we must burn away its corruptions,” Radhakrishnan murmured. ”It is a dangerous work, Prime Minister. But it is essential. I will assemble the finest scholars of Sanskrit, law, and history in the country before the week is out.”

”We cannot afford to fail in this, Radhakrishnan-ji,” Ram said, standing to conclude the meeting. ”A society that remains morally rotten at home cannot project power abroad.”
