Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1935-36

In August, the Government of India Act 1935 was passed, and with it came a shift that Ram had anticipated but still examined carefully.

The introduction of provincial autonomy created a new layer within the structure of governance. Indian administrators would now occupy positions of authority, managing local affairs while remaining within a framework controlled by the British.

To many, this appeared as progress; to Ram, it appeared as insulation, another layer inserted between the master and the slave.

Responsibility shifted downward. Control remained above. The term brown sahibs began to circulate quietly, reflecting a perception that those who occupied these positions might begin to mirror the authority they served. Ram did not use the term openly.

He did not need to.

He understood its implication.

The separation of Burma was another, quieter provision of the act, announced with the same administrative detachment.

Ram read the notice in silence, then again more slowly.

Burma, removed. Separated. Defined as distinct from India. The reasoning was presented as practical, easier to govern and administer.

The implication was deeper, an amputation of a living, breathing limb from its roots. And two smaller entities, easier to manage. Now, to be honest, there was a widespread anti Indian sentiment among the Burmese since after the British occupation, but it was also true that the British had cultivated this sentiment knowingly. People-to-people ties are not so easily broken, but the British were masters of ’Divide and Conquer.’

He spoke against it in small gatherings, not seeking large platforms, but addressing those who would listen.

”Geography is not merely lines,” he said. ”It is continuity, of trade, of culture, of interaction. To separate Burma as if it were incidental is to ignore that continuity.”

The response was limited; very few saw the urgency in the issue. Rather, the majority celebrated the small largesse of the British in giving the provinces administrative rights.

Ram persisted nonetheless.

His arrest came without spectacle.

Two policemen arrived one evening, their manner formal but not aggressive. They informed him of the charges: public agitation, disruption, incitement. The language was familiar, the process routine.

Ram listened, nodded once, and accompanied them without resistance.

The house remained as it was.

Silent.

Prison altered time.

The cell was small, its walls marked by previous occupants, its air carrying the scent of confinement that no amount of ventilation could fully remove. Light entered through a narrow opening, shifting slowly across the floor as the day progressed.

Ram adapted quickly.

He imposed structure where none existed.

Mornings began with exercise, limited movements, repeated until they served their purpose. The rest of the day he divided mentally, assigning each segment to a task.

Without access to his networks, he turned inward.

To thought, analysis, creation. It was during this period that he began to work on something new.

Education.

Not in the formal sense; he had no training in pedagogy, no experience in curriculum design, but as a structured attempt to bring clarity to foundational learning.

He began with what he knew.

Mathematics.

Science.

Language.

Sanskrit became central to this effort, not as a vehicle of tradition alone, but as a medium of instruction. He began to outline how basic concepts could be taught through it, numbers explained through linguistic structure, scientific ideas expressed with precision that the language allowed. Allowing India’s historic scientific contribution to see the light of the Sun and breathe anew.

He requested books. Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics first. What he knew, he translated into Sanskrit. Created new words for which none existed. The jailer was surprised to see the amount of paper he went through, inspected every scrap, and found nothing objectionable.

Other prisoners observed him.

”What are you writing?” one asked.

”A structure, a syllabus,” Ram replied.

”For what?”

”For learning.”

The man laughed softly. ”In here?”

”Would you like to learn?”

Some responded. Over time, a small group gathered around him.

They discussed ideas: how children learned, how language shaped thought, how education might differ if designed differently. They tried out different things: a concept taught in a new way; the prisoners suggested some things, and Ram documented all of it.

Ram did not claim authority.

He experimented.

”This is not complete,” he said once, showing a rough outline. ”But it is a start.”

Seasons passed.

The heat of summer gave way to the chill of winter, then returned gradually. Time moved without markers, except those imposed by routine.

Outside, events continued.

Inside, Ram refined his thinking.

What he did not control continued to function. The factory and the distribution network worked on without him. Production remained steady, distribution continued. This knowledge reached him indirectly, through fragments of conversation, through the absence of new charges against him.

The system he had built did not depend on him; that, more than anything, confirmed its strength.

His arrest also had a more beneficial impact than he had not considered. It made his network even more cautious, and thus the investigation ground to a halt.

April 1936, Naini Central Jail, Allahabad

The visitor’s room in Naini Jail was small, humid, and smelled faintly of damp lime and disinfectant. Light filtered through a high, iron-barred aperture, cutting through the haze of suspended dust.

Ram Prasad Gupta sat on one side of a thick wooden table, his arms resting lightly on the scarred surface. Across from him sat Vallabhbhai Patel. Arriving under the official guise of legal counsel, Patel wore his usual plain khadi dhoti and shawl. His face, heavy-set and lined with quiet resolve, betrayed nothing as his sharp eyes scrutinised the young scholar sitting before him.

For a moment, only the muffled sounds of wardens pacing the outer corridor filled the silence. Patel was the first to speak, his voice low, firm, and stripped of unnecessary pleasantries.

”The Congress is debating the provincial elections under the new framework,” Patel began, leaning forward slightly. ”Yet you remain in a cell, preaching non-cooperation against the 1935 Act over a single clause. Why oppose the 1935 Act so fiercely, Ram? Is provincial autonomy not a step forward?”

Ram looked at him calmly, his expression unhurried. ”They have defined a centuries-long, people-to-people connection as separate. They are severing Burma from the Indian administrative sphere. Wouldn’t you oppose it, Sardar Sahib?”

Patel raised a brow, resting his hands on the table. ”But the Burmese themselves want it. Many of their political leaders have explicitly asked for separation. Why insist on binding them to us if they wish otherwise?”

”Some do genuinely,” Ram conceded, his tone soft yet precise. ”And some do so after learning in British schools, speaking in British tongue, absorbing British parameters of statehood. Divide and rule is an insidious policy; it does not merely separate territories, it teaches the colonised to demand their own division.”

Patel watched him carefully, acknowledging the point with a slight, deliberate nod, though his posture remained pragmatic. He knew the practicalities of mass politics all too well.

Ram leaned back, looking directly into Patel’s eyes. ”Let us pose a hypothetical, Sardar. Let’s say, by the simple press of a button, the British up and leave tomorrow morning. What do you think will happen then?”

Patel paused, his brow furrowing slightly as he considered the question. ”It is hard to say with certainty. We shall have to govern ourselves. It will be turbulent, but necessary.”

”Govern what?” Ram asked quietly. ”We are a collection of five hundred plus princely states, patchworked alongside British-occupied provinces. Look at what they leave behind in their other holdings across the region; they have pitted the Tamils against the Sinhalas in Ceylon, the Karens against the Shan in the east. They built the Martial Races theory, codified ’criminal castes,’ and pushed the concept of the Aryan invasion to fracture our history. Say nothing of the deepening fault lines between religions.”

Ram picked up an imaginary marker on the table, tracing unseen borders.

”Do you see it? If they leave today, we will be a far diminished shadow of what we were when they first arrived, and not just in terms of land area, but in our collective consciousness.”

Patel held his gaze, unblinking. ”And where does Burma fit into all this? Historically, I don’t think any major Indian empire ever directly ruled or annexed the Irrawaddy.”

”I submit to that,” Ram replied instantly. ”Historically, direct rule was rare, though there is clear precedent: the Naga kings ruled land extending into the Arakan valley, and the cultural footprint of Buddhism and Hinduism spread seamlessly into Burma and throughout Southeast Asia without a single legion invading. But look at the modern geography, Sardar.”

Ram rested his elbows on the table, locking his fingers together.

”When the Europeans needed a cheaper, faster way around Africa, they dug the Suez Canal. Maritime routes dictate the power of nations. India, as it stands geographically, sits at the absolute centre of global sea lanes. If I see things right, and Burma collapses into internal chaos post-independence, weakened by ethnic fractures the empire left behind, a foreign power will eventually step into that vacuum. They will sit on the very door to the Pacific and dictate terms to us from our own eastern flank.”

Patel’s lips thinned. A subtle smirk of grim humour touched the corner of his mouth. ”You speak of Burma’s potential chaos, yet you are so certain we ourselves wouldn’t slide into chaos, with our five hundred princely states waiting to carve out their own kingdoms?”

Ram didn’t hesitate. ”We have Gandhi-ji. We have you, Nehru-ji, Bose. I trust you to stop that from happening.”

Patel stared at him for a long, heavy moment. The casual confidence in Ram’s statement was not flattery; it was stated as a cold, expected fact. The Iron Man of India found himself measuring the young man across the table with a renewed focus.

”Clearly,” Patel said, his voice dropping an octave, ”you have given a great deal of thought to this. And I suspect there is much you are not telling me.” He leaned closer. ”How does the India of your dreams look, then?”

For the first time in his life, Ram felt the weight of his own grand vision pressing against his chest. He had kept it locked behind mathematical equations, Sanskrit translations, and underground logistics. But looking at the man who would one day have to forge a nation out of shattered provinces, Ram finally articulated it.

”From the Tibetan plateau and Kashmir down to Sri Lanka, and beyond, to the islands in the ocean. From the Hindukush all the way to the Irrawaddy delta,” Ram said, his eyes burning with an intense, quiet clarity. ”Sitting across two major ocean shipping lanes, with direct land access to Central Asia. A land where people of different races, languages, and faiths are able to coexist in peace and structural harmony. Educated, rich, happy.” ℯℯ𝑙.

Ram paused, a faint, self-aware smile touching his lips.

”It might seem foolish to you, Sardar. That map of Akhand Bharat that people sometimes eulogise over in speeches... that is the India of my dreams.”

The small room fell completely silent. The damp air felt heavy.

Patel did not laugh. He did not dismiss it as the idealism of an imprisoned youth or the grandstanding of a political theorist. He simply sat there, arms folded across his chest, his eyes fixed on the wooden table between them.

He seemed pensive, his formidable mind quietly weighing the vast, impossible geometry of the young man’s map against the brutal realities of the world they were about to inherit.
