Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1931

Outside, the campus dissolved into clusters of conversation.

”Is it confirmed?”

”They did it early this morning.”

”Without delay?”

”They did not wait.”

Ram stood among them, listening without speaking.

He had known, yet hearing it spoken, confirmed, carried a different weight.

The executions of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru were no longer anticipated; they were done.

The news drew crowds that seemed to stretch beyond the capacity of the city itself.

Ram arrived early, positioning himself at the periphery where he could observe without obstruction. The crowd gathered gradually, not in disorder, but with a kind of restrained urgency. People came from all directions: students, labourers, traders, women who stood slightly apart but did not leave.

There was no spectacle, no uncontrolled outburst. The atmosphere was heavy, contained. When the slogans rose, they did so in unison, not in chaos. When silence fell, it held.

Ram watched the faces around him.

Grief, yes. But something else too. A metaphorical tightening of belts. A resolve that did not express itself loudly.

He understood then that the loss was not only personal or symbolic; it also altered the movement itself.

Weeks passed, but the sense of transition did not fade; instead, it deepened.

The next blow came quietly.

Ram first heard of it not through public announcement, but through conversation, a name spoken with disbelief, then repeated with certainty.

Chandrashekhar Azad. The uncapturable, dead, at Alfred Park.

The morning had been ordinary.

Ram had attended his classes, completed his notes, and begun to leave when the news reached him. This time, there was no confusion, no delay in confirmation. The details were already circulating: betrayal, encirclement, a final stand.

Ram did not react outwardly.

He walked, not hurriedly, but with purpose, toward the park.

The area had already been cordoned off. Police presence lingered, maintaining distance between the site and the gathering crowd. People stood in clusters, speaking in low voices, pointing toward a section of the park that remained inaccessible. A tree stump signified the spot of the last stand of one of India’s heroes. The British, having cut down the tree itself to erase the memory of the man that terrified them, eluded their systems for so many years.

Ram did not attempt to approach.

He did not need to see.

He understood enough.

What struck him was not the event itself, that he had expected, but the realisation that expectation had not changed outcome.

He had tried, in his limited way, to warn Azad.

It had made no difference.

He resolved to see it through. ’One day,’ he resolved, ’one day, this park will bear the name of Chandrashekhar Azad himself.’

Azad’s funeral lacked the scale of Bhagat Singh’s, but not its significance.

Those who attended did so with a different awareness.

This was not only a loss.

It was an ending.

Ram stood among them, his presence unremarked, his attention fixed not on the rituals, but on the reactions. The faces were harder now, less expressive. There was grief, but it did not dominate. It had been replaced by something quieter.

Acceptance.

Not of defeat, but of transition.

The revolutionary movement, as it had existed under Azad’s leadership, had lost its centre.

What remained would continue.

But differently.

Around the same time, Motilal Nehru passed away.

Ram attended that funeral as well, moving through the gathering with the same measured presence. Here, the atmosphere differed again, less charged, more reflective. The loss was of a leader who had operated within a different framework, who had shaped the political landscape in ways that were less visible, but no less significant.

Three deaths.

Three different roles.

All within months.

It was one of life’s ironies: two people on the extreme ends of the independence movement spectrum, departing in such a short time.

Daily life resumed, but it carried a different weight.

At the university, lectures continued, though attendance fluctuated. Some students had left, drawn into movements elsewhere. Others remained, their focus divided.

Ram continued as before; he attended his lectures and practicals, studying diligently, and his work remained as precise as ever.

In the temple basement, production did not slow. If anything, it became more deliberate. The absence of centralised leadership required adaptation. Smaller groups needed support. Networks had to function without reliance on a single figure.

Ram adjusted accordingly.

At home, Vidya’s withdrawal had deepened into something close to absence.

She still performed her tasks, but without engagement. Meals were prepared and left, often eaten hours later. Conversations had reduced to necessity. Spending most of her time in the temple or at the ghats.

One evening, as they sat to eat, Ram spoke.

”You eat only this one meal a day now.”

It was not an observation; it was a boy’s appeal to his mother to take care of her health.

”I don’t feel hungry anymore,” she said.

”Let’s go to the hospital tomorrow.”

”No. I only want to go to him now. He will call me soon.”

Ram could not say anything to that. His father’s death had taken away the will to live from his mother, and, no matter what he might do, Ram could not reignite it.

In Congress meetings, the tone shifted again.

With the deaths of Bhagat Singh, Azad, and Motilal Nehru, the movement faced a redefinition. Strategies were reconsidered. Positions adjusted. The demand for a separate Muslim nation started to become more commonplace behind closed doors.

Ram spoke with increasing emphasis on cohesion. As did others. It had not helped in the future; Ram hoped that his presence would change things, but knew it was almost impossible.

”If we divide now,” he said, ”we will carry that division into independence.”

The recent riots in Kanpur and elsewhere had underscored the point. Reports of violence, retaliation and escalation had spread widely.

”This cannot be secondary,” Ram continued. ”If we do not address it, it will define what comes next.”

By the end of 1931, the city had not stabilised; it had adapted. The initial surge of movement had given way to a slower, more deliberate phase. Losses had forced reconsideration, and the leadership had shifted.

Ram moved within this landscape without outward change, but internally, his understanding had reached a new clarity. Memory had given him foresight, but it had not given him control. And so, he continued, not relying on what he knew would happen, but on what he could build, because even in the absence of certainty, structure remained.
