Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1937-38

The structure of Ram Prasad Gupta’s life had settled into a pattern so deliberate that even disruption failed to dislodge it. His release from prison had not restored an earlier version of him; it had clarified the direction he was already moving toward. The world outside had shifted, politically, socially, subtly, but his response to it was no longer reactive; it was anticipatory. Yet from the outside, his days appeared almost restrained.

The courtyard filled each morning, though never in the same way twice. Children arrived in small clusters, some early, some late, their energy uneven but persistent. A boy would run in, slate tucked under his arm, only to slow himself at the threshold as if remembering that this was not a place for noise. Others would slip in quietly, taking their place along the low wall, waiting for Ram to begin.

He did not call for order.

”Start from where we stopped yesterday,” he would say, writing an equation without preamble. The children leaned forward, some eager, others uncertain, but all attentive. A mistake by one became a lesson for all. He would pause, not to correct immediately, but to allow the error to reveal itself.

”Why is this wrong?” he asked once, tapping lightly against a boy’s slate.

The boy hesitated. ”I-I thought-”

”You did not think,” Ram said evenly. ”You followed.”

The boy looked down.

”Think,” Ram continued, his tone unchanged. ”Then answer.”

The correction came slowly.

But it came.

Sanskrit followed, integrated rather than separate. Ram had refined the approach during his time in prison and through his discussions with scholars. It was no longer about recitation. It was about structure.

”You cannot think clearly in a language you do not understand,” he told them. ”And you cannot understand if you only repeat.”

He wrote a simple sentence, then dismantled it, word by word, root by root, until even the youngest among them could see how meaning was constructed.

The courtyard became a place of discipline rather than instruction.

And in that discipline, something took root.

As his students grew more and more confident, they started teaching others of their own volition. Adults, fellow children, and even university students for Sanskrit, and following Ram’s example, started speaking in Sanskrit as much as possible. If European linguists and historians, who had termed Sanskrit a dead language, could see this, they would lose their minds at the revival of a supposedly dead tongue in daily parlance.

Afternoons remained hidden away from any gaze, ensuring his business ran smoothly.

The network had expanded, but its strength lay not in size, but in invisibility. Ram moved between locations without a pattern, never staying long enough to establish a routine. Reports came in through trusted intermediaries, short, precise, stripped of unnecessary detail.

”There is increased movement near the eastern route,” one man reported.

”Reduce usage,” Ram replied. ”Shift west for two cycles.”

”And the delay?”

”Delay is acceptable. Visibility is not. Interception must not be allowed.”

The man nodded.

There was no discussion beyond that.

It was during this period that his thinking began to shift again, not in direction, but in scale.

The fragments of memory he carried from another life had grown sharper in implication, if not in detail. He could not recall dates precisely. He could not reconstruct sequences with certainty. But he knew enough.

War was coming in 1939, one of the most consequential years in that timeline’s history. War, not a localised conflict, not a colonial skirmish. A global war.

He began to prepare accordingly.

The realisation did not come as a moment of revelation, but as a gradual alignment of thought. Europe was unstable. Reports filtered through newspapers, conversations, speeches. The rise of Adolf Hitler was not merely a European concern; it signalled a shift in global balance.

Ram saw what others did not yet prioritise.

War would draw British resources outward.

It would create gaps.

Opportunities.

And it would once again require Indian blood and food to grease the wheels of the Empire’s war machine.

But opportunity required preparation, and preparation required knowledge.

The weapons his network produced were of increasing quality, no longer crude, no longer unreliable. They had moved closer to British standards in both design and function. Yet there remained a limitation.

Experience.

Handling a weapon was not the same as understanding its full capability. Maintenance, adaptation, battlefield use, tactics; this required exposure that could not be replicated entirely in secrecy.

Ram recognised this.

The solution, when it formed, was both simple and risky.

He began to identify men within his network, those who were disciplined, discreet, and ideologically aligned. To them, he presented a proposal. ”You will enlist,” he said.

Some looked at him with confusion.

”In the British army?” one asked.

”Yes.”

The hesitation was immediate.

”To serve them?”

”To learn from them, and to recruit others,” Ram replied. ”We need far more people than we have right now for what is coming.”

He explained it carefully. War would bring expansion of military recruitment. Training would be systematic, standardised, and thorough. Those who entered would gain access, not only to weapons, but to methods, logistics, organisation.

”This is not service,” Ram said. ”It is preparation.”

”And when the war ends?” another asked.

Ram held his gaze. ”Then you return with experience and new comrades.”

Ram’s attention had begun to divide more sharply between internal preparation and external observation. The political space, which had once offered potential for coordinated direction, now showed signs of strain.

It became clearer in 1938.

The meeting hall was full, but the energy within it was uneven.

Subhas Chandra Bose had returned and been elected as the Congress President. His presence brought a sharpness that had been missing, an urgency that cut through the slower, more deliberate tone that had defined earlier discussions. He called for more decisive action, including the use of force against the British.

Gandhiji and his compatriots disagreed.

Ram stood toward the back, where he could observe without being drawn into immediate engagement.

Bose spoke first.

”We are losing time,” he said, his voice controlled but firm. ”Every delay strengthens those who rule us. We must act; not in fragments, not in gestures, but decisively. We must strive for self-governance, by force if needed. Such is the need of the hour.”

His voice filled the room with an electric passion, but it was bound by the silence of almost half the occupants.

A senior member rose, a follower of Gandhian ways, adjusting his shawl before speaking.

”Action,” he said, ”must be aligned with principle. We cannot abandon what defines us in the pursuit of expedience. And force, we must give up such inflammatory language, lest we have another Kakori incident.”

Bose did not respond immediately.

Instead, he let the statement settle.

”And what defines us?” he asked finally. ”Is it restraint? Or is it purpose? Are we to beg for freedom like a starving dog to its master? Will we be truly independent should they bestow it on us?” he thundered.

The room shifted.

Ram observed the silence left in the wake of Bose’s rebuttal, the tightened lips. The two camps had solidified their positions and refused to budge. Such times created inertia, and inaction was not something Ram cared about.
