Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

15 August, 1947

Annex, Red Fort, New Delhi

The monsoon rain, which had lashed the ancient stones of Old Delhi through the small hours of the morning, had tapered off into a thick, suffocating mist by eight o’clock. It clung to the red sandstone battlements of the Lahori Gate, turning the dark, weathered masonry into an inked silhouette against the pale, bruised sky. The air smelled heavily of damp earth, river silt, wet canvas, and the sharp, metallic tang of coal smoke blowing in from the railyards across the Yamuna.

Below the high ramparts, the vast expanse stretching toward Chandni Chowk and the surrounding maidan had transformed into a sea of human life. Hundreds of thousands of people had poured into the capital. They were railway fitters from the Northern Indian Railway workshops, mill hands from the cotton presses of Kanpur, peasants who had trudged through the muddy ditches of Gurgaon and Rohtak, refugees carrying their meagre worldly possessions wrapped in frayed bedsheets, and families dressed in clean white khadi. They stood shoulder to shoulder, their wet umbrellas folded, their faces turned upward toward the empty stone balcony where a brass microphone array sat on a heavy wooden tripod.

In the small, vaulted staging chamber tucked behind the battlements, Ram Prasad Gupta stood quietly before a tall, tarnished mirror. He wore a simple, unadorned white linen achkan. His fingers moved with methodical precision, adjusting the collar. There were no medals, no decorative sashes, no ostentatious marks of high office on his person, only the plain, functional simplicity he had maintained since his days in Allahabad.

Beside him, Shaktidas Sharma stood near a small arched window that overlooked the inner courtyard. Shaktidas held a leather briefcase under his arm, his fingers tapping a nervous, quiet rhythm against the dark hide.

”The transmission lines are active,” Shaktidas said softly, his voice barely rising above the distant, low roar of the crowds outside. ”All India Radio has linked the shortwave transmitters at Kingsway Camp to the regional stations in Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, and Patna. The signal is clear, though the humidity is giving the engineers trouble with the vacuum tubes in the broadcast tents.”

Ram did not turn immediately. He checked the time on his pocket watch, a plain silver timepiece he had carried for twenty years. The hands read eight-forty-five.

”Let the engineers worry about the vacuum tubes, Shaktidas,” Ram said quietly. His voice was steady, devoid of the theatrical tremor that usually preceded historic moments. ”Our concern is what happens when the sound of the speech fades and the reality of the morning settles in.”

”They are waiting for hope, Ram-bhai,” Shaktidas remarked, stepping closer. ”They have bled for decades. They want to hear that the night is over.”

”The night of foreign rule is over,” Ram corrected smoothly, turning to face his long-time confidant. ”But the morning brings its own light, and light exposes every crack in the foundation. If we offer them sweet poetry today, they will expect miracles tomorrow. A nation cannot be governed on poetry, Shaktidas. It requires steel, grain, and balance sheets.”

He picked up a thin paper folder from the wooden table, glanced briefly at the handwritten outline inside, and slid it into his inner pocket. He did not intend to read from a script.

At two minutes to nine, the heavy wooden doors leading out onto the main parapet were pulled back by two ceremonial guards in white uniforms. A rush of damp, heavy wind swept into the stone corridor, carrying with it the raw, unadulterated sound of three hundred thousand human voices.

Ram stepped out into the open air.

The moment his tall, solitary figure appeared behind the parapet railing, a wave of sound tore through the maidan. A guttural, overwhelming roar that seemed to shake the very foundations of the seventeenth-century fort. Banners of saffron, white, and green rippled across the crowd. People clambered onto the wheels of stationary bullock carts, onto the roofs of parked military trucks, onto the lower branches of the neem trees along the road, all straining for a glimpse of the man who now held the executive helm of the independent nation.

Ram walked to the front of the balcony and set his hands flat against the cold stone coping of the balustrade. He stood completely still, allowing the roar to wash over him without offering an immediate response. He did not raise his arms in triumphant gestures; he did not wave. He simply stood, a firm, motionless anchor against the swirling tide of public emotion.

Gradually, as the crowd observed his calm, silent posture, the wild cheering began to subside. The collective roar receded into a vast, expectant hush, broken only by the rhythmic snapping of the Tricolour flying from the tall flagstaff above and the distant hum of the radio generators.

Ram stepped up to the three black microphones. When he spoke, his voice was measured, deep, and unhurried, amplified through the horn loudspeakers suspended from the battlements and carried across the shortwave airwaves to every corner of the subcontinent.

”Brothers and sisters of India,” Ram began.

The simple opening phrase echoed across the silent grounds.

”We are free from today,” he said.

He paused, letting the five simple words sink into the consciousness of the millions listening. There was no theatrical flourish in his delivery; it was an absolute statement of fact.

”The flag of the British Crown no longer flies over this historic fortress,” Ram continued, his gaze sweeping over the vast ocean of upturned faces. ”The colonial authority that governed our lives, dictated our trade, and commanded our resources for nearly two centuries has ended. But let us understand clearly, in this very first hour of our national life, what freedom truly means.”

He leaned slightly closer to the microphone, his hands resting heavily on the stone edge.

”Freedom is not an exemption from struggle. It is not an invitation to ease, nor is it a guarantee of immediate prosperity. Freedom is the assumption of absolute, inescapable responsibility. From this day forward, our successes are entirely our own. Our failures, too, belong to us alone.”

In the distinguished enclosure below the ramparts, where senior political figures, trade union leaders, industrial heads, and foreign journalists sat on wooden chairs, a quiet stillness fell. Jawaharlal Nehru sat near the front, his head tilted slightly, his brows furrowed in intense concentration. Beside him, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel sat with his hands folded in his lap, his expression as unyielding as iron.

”From today,” Ram’s voice rang out, clear and steady against the humid air, ”we cannot blame anyone else. We cannot blame the British administration in London. We cannot blame the Viceroy. We cannot blame foreign policies or imperial intrigues for the condition of our streets, the state of our farms, or the quality of our governance. Whatever happens in this country from this minute onward will be the direct result of our own labour, our own wisdom, or our own neglect.”

He looked out toward the distant edges of the crowd, where the thin grey smoke from refugee fires drifted into the overcast sky.

”The time ahead will be tumultuous. A new nation, long bound in chains, does not learn to walk in a single day. We will stumble. We will face severe economic shortages, administrative disruptions, and the bitter, painful agony of a land severed at its margins. There will be moments when the burden seems too heavy to bear, when the problems before us appear larger than our capacity to solve them.”

”It will be even harder as we start as a nation divided. Some of us have demanded and secured a separate nation based on the belief that two faiths cannot coexist.” The crowd murmured, some shouting in anger.

”Even as I speak, even now migrations are happening across the length and breadth of the country. Let us take a page out of Bapu’s handbook and cast out any hatred from our hearts. Let us let those who leave, leave in peace, and welcome those who return as our brothers and sisters. Let us wish the newborn country of Pakistan the best. May they achieve what they set out for.” The murmurs settled, but Ram could still see some faces twisted in anger.

He raised a single finger, laying down a stern, unshakeable command.

”In these hours of trial, our only salvation lies in our unity. We must cultivate a fierce, unshakeable spirit of brotherhood, a deep, permanent consciousness that before we are Hindus, before we are Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains or Christians, before we belong to any caste, region, or political ideology, we are Indians.”

A sudden, sharp applause broke out from the crowd, building rapidly until it rolled across the grounds like thunder. Ram held his hand steady until the sound subsided once more.

”We are all equal from today,” he said, his voice dropping into a tone of quiet, monumental authority. ”The law of this republic will recognise no imperial masters and no subservient subjects. It will recognise only citizens, equal in dignity, equal in duty, and equal before the law. Let us put aside the petty rivalries, the old grievances, and the narrow parochial squabbles that kept us divided while foreign rulers harvested our wealth. Let us go to work, in the fields, in the foundries, in the offices, and in the schools, not for personal gain alone, but to build a nation that can stand upright in the councils of the world.”

He looked directly into the centre of the crowd, his face softening slightly, though his eyes remained firm and resolute.

”We step forward into this free dawn with no illusions of ease, but with absolute confidence in the strength and resilience of our people. Let us build a future worthy of the sacrifices that brought us to this day. Jai Hind.”

”JAI HIND!”

”Bharat Mata ki Jai!”

”BHARAT MATA KI JAI! BHARAT MATA KI JAI! BHARAT MATA KI JAI!”

The collective cry that erupted from the crowd was immense, a sound born of decades of suppressed ambition, now bursting forth with unbridled force. Ram offered a brief, formal bow to the crowd, turned without lingering, and walked back through the tall wooden doors into the quiet shade of the stone corridor.
