Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1946

The year 1946 opened not with the calm of post-war recovery, but with the cold, heavy vibration of an empire in its death throes. Across the Indian subcontinent, the British administrative machinery was cracking under the weight of financial exhaustion, mutinous whispers within the Royal Indian Navy, and the overwhelming realisation in London that four hundred million people could no longer be held by imperial decree.

The war was won, but Great Britain was bankrupt. The British were preparing to leave, and in their wake, they were leaving behind a land primed for explosion.

From the first days of January, Ram Prasad Gupta threw himself into a gruelling national tour ahead of the scheduled central and provincial legislative elections. For weeks on end, his days were consumed by the clatter of steam locomotives, the dust of rural roads, and the thunderous roar of political rallies that stretched from the crowded maidans of Lahore and Kanpur to the industrial suburbs of Calcutta and the temple cities of the South.

Where other leaders spoke of moral triumph or framed the coming election as a victory parade for freedom, Ram offered no soft comfort. Standing on elevated wooden platforms before crowds of fifty thousand, his dark coat buttoned against the winter chill and his voice amplified by horn loudspeakers, he delivered a message of stark, uncompromising realism.

”Do not let yourselves be deceived by the rhetoric of smooth transitions,” Ram told a massive assembly at Minto Park in Lahore, his sharp gaze sweeping across thousands of upturned faces. ”An empire does not vanish quietly over afternoon tea in New Delhi. When the British pull back their bayonets, the authority that held this subcontinent together for a century will vanish in a single morning. If you believe that paper constitutions alone can preserve your homes, your families, and your ancestral fields, you are courting disaster. A nation is defined by three things: heavy industrial sovereignty, administrative discipline, and the organised, unflinching capacity for collective self-defence. Without these, freedom is merely a brief intermission between tyrannies.”

As Ram moved from platform to platform, his true, hidden work operated in parallel darkness. Behind the political speeches and public assemblies, he issued a series of urgent operational directives to Shaktidas, who commanded the central intelligence and logistics node in Allahabad.

In a secluded office hidden behind a grain wholesale firm near the Kanpur rail yards, Ram met with Shaktidas late one January evening. On the large wooden table between them lay detailed survey maps of Northern and Eastern India, marked with coloured grease pencils.

”The political campaign is merely the public curtain, Shaktidas,” Ram said, laying his thumb on the river passes of the Punjab. ”Our true focus must be the physical geography of what is coming. The British will partition this land. When they draw those lines, the political fanaticism stoked over the last decade will break out into open, unbridled violence. We must prepare for a total population transfer across the border zones.”

Shaktidas leaned over the map, his pencil tracing the highlighted corridors. ”Where are we concentrating the network’s assets?”

”Eight key provinces,” Ram answered without hesitation. ”Bengal, East Bengal, Bihar, the United Provinces, Punjab, Jammu, Gujarat, and Sindh. I want every transit route, every railway junction, every river crossing, and every narrow pass mapped down to the yard.

”Identify natural bottleneck ambush points where hostile mobs could trap refugee columns. Develop defensive perimeter plans for every mixed district. I want hidden arms caches, medical supplies, and shortwave field radios positioned at strategic intervals along every anticipated migration path.”

”And the personnel?” Shaktidas asked quietly.

”Our demobilised enlistees,” Ram replied. ”The men who bled in the deserts of North Africa and the jungles of Burma. They know unit discipline, field cover, and heavy weapons. Activate them through their local cooperatives. Tell them their war was not finished in Europe or Southeast Asia; their real battle is about to begin right here on their own soil.”

Days later, Ram travelled secretly to Bombay to meet with Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and senior executives of the Hindu Mahasabha. The meeting took place inside a secured bungalow in Dadar. Savarkar, grey-haired and frail in body but possessing eyes that burned with intense intellectual fervour, sat opposite Ram.

”The Congress leaders are floating on clouds of sentimentality, Ram Prasad,” Savarkar said, his voice sharp and raspy. ”They still talk of unity while Jinnah prepares the knife. The League is openly mobilising its National Guards in Punjab and Bengal.”

”Then let us not waste breath on political petitions, Savarkar-ji,” Ram said calmly, leaning forward across the table. ”I have not come here to draft manifestos. I have come to tell you that the time for speeches is over. If your organisations across Bengal, Bihar, and the Punjab do not prepare our people for physical, survival-level violence, they will be slaughtered in their own courtyards.”

Savarkar’s brow furrowed. ”Our young men are willing to fight, Ram Prasad. But they lack organisation and equipment.”

”My network will supply the equipment,” Ram said in a low, even tone. ”Standardised bolt-action rifles, heavy revolvers, and serrated fragmentation grenades manufactured in our private foundries. But I require absolute discipline from your local cadres. They must stop making provocative public speeches and start organising disciplined, defensive neighbourhood units. They must link up directly with my district commanders, men like Sergeant Nath and Nair. When the eruption comes, wild anger will only get people killed. Only organised, lethal defence will hold the line.”

Savarkar watched Ram closely, recognising the cold, calculating clarity in the younger man’s eyes. He slowly inclined his head. ”It will be done as you say.”

Throughout January and February, across hundreds of hidden training grounds, disguised as rural wrestling akhadas, agricultural tool cooperatives, and veteran welfare centres, Ram’s network went to work. Veterans of World War drilled thousands of young men in tactical movement, night watch duties, weapon maintenance, and perimeter defence. In basement workshops from Kanpur to Howrah, lathe machines turned out firearm parts and ammunition without pause, feeding a vast, silent pipeline of defensive capability.

When the results of the 1946 elections were announced in March, the political landscape was revealed in all its stark, terrifying clarity. The electorate was deeply, irrevocably polarised.

The Indian National Congress achieved a sweeping, overwhelming victory in the general constituencies, securing almost all non-Muslim seats across the provinces. But Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s Muslim League won an equally staggering, near-total victory in the reserved Muslim constituencies, sweeping eighty-six per cent of the total Muslim vote across India and capturing almost every Muslim seat in the central assembly.

The moderate middle ground was completely obliterated. The Muslim League had successfully established itself as the sole political voice of the subcontinent’s Muslim population, while Congress held the rest.

In his Allahabad study, Ram examined the detailed breakdown of the election results provided by Shaktidas. The maps on his desk were shaded in dark blue and green, illustrating a nation already divided in spirit long before any physical border was drawn.

”Look at these numbers, Shaktidas,” Ram said, setting down his fountain pen. ”This is not a political mandate for a united, federal parliament. It is a de facto plebiscite for territorial division. Jinnah has proven that the Muslim masses in the Northwest and East will not accept a centralised government dominated by Congress. Any attempt to force a weak, decentralised coalition government upon this country will lead to a paralysed state and inevitable civil war.”

”Then partition is unavoidable?” Shaktidas asked softly.

”It is a mathematical certainty,” Ram replied, his voice devoid of emotion. ”And because it is inevitable, we must stop clinging to the delusion of an undivided subcontinent. A clean, surgical, total population transfer is now the only realistic mechanism to prevent decades of perpetual, bloody border conflict and internal subversion. We must ensure that when the division comes, our state emerges with a strong, centralised core, unburdened by internal sabotage.”
