Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1946

On December 9, 1946, the Constituent Assembly of India convened for its historic first session in the high-domed Constitution Hall in New Delhi.

The magnificent chamber was filled with the nation’s legal giants, scholars, and freedom fighters: Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, Sarojini Naidu, and hundreds of provincial delegates.

Yet, row after row of seats on the left side of the grand hall stood completely, chillingly empty. The seventy-three elected delegates of the Muslim League were absent, fulfilling Jinnah’s total boycott of the assembly.

Ram Prasad Gupta stood at the central lectern, looking out over the crowded hall and the vast expanse of empty green leather seats.

The silence in the chamber was heavy. Everyone in the room understood what those empty benches meant. All the polite political formulas, all the constitutional compromises offered by the British, and all the dreams of an undivided subcontinent were dead.

Pakistan was no longer a bargaining chip. It was a mathematical, territorial inevitability.

Ram adjusted his microphone. His voice echoed clearly through the high acoustics of the hall.

”We assemble today under the eyes of history,” Ram began, his tone calm, steady, and destitute of empty sentiment. ”We see empty seats in this hall. We acknowledge their absence without anger and without regret. Let no one in this assembly, and no power in the world, mistake our patience for weakness. We will not delay the birth of a free, sovereign Indian Republic to appease those who reject union.

”We will draft a constitution for a strong, unified state, a state equipped with an iron central government, a powerful modern defence force, and an industrial base capable of guaranteeing the liberty and security of every citizen who remains within our borders. The work of building our republic begins today.”

The hall erupted into thunderous, prolonged applause, led by Dr Ambedkar and Sardar Patel.

Late that night, well past two in the morning, Ram sat in his private executive office on the second floor of the Secretariat building. Outside, a cold December rain lashed against the tall glass windows, reflecting the pale amber glow of New Delhi’s street lamps.

The outer door opened quietly, and Shaktidas stepped inside. He wore a heavy wool overcoat and carried a locked leather briefcase. He closed the door behind him, locked it, and set the briefcase on Ram’s desk.

”The Constituent Assembly session set a firm tone, Ram,” Shaktidas said, taking off his wet coat. ”The Congress delegates are no longer talking about making concessions to the League. They accept that partition is coming.”

”Partition is merely the local reality, Shaktidas,” Ram said, standing up from his desk. He walked over to the back wall of his office, grabbed the cord of a heavy green curtain, and pulled it aside.

Behind the curtain hung a massive, detailed topographical map of South Asia and the Indian Ocean rim, spanning from the borders of Persia and Afghanistan in the west, across the Himalayas, to Burma, Malaya, and Ceylon in the south and east.

Ram picked up a red drafting pencil. ”Look at this map, Shaktidas,” Ram said, his voice lowering into the cold, sharp register of a grand strategist. ”The British Empire in Asia is collapsing. They will withdraw from India first, probably within the next twelve to eighteen months.

”The moment they leave India, their imperial dominoes across the entire Indian Ocean region will tumble. Within two years of our independence, London will vacate Burma and Ceylon. We cannot afford to sit passively while our strategic perimeter becomes an arc of unstable, hostile, or foreign-dominated regimes.”

Shaktidas leaned in, his eyes following the tip of Ram’s pencil. ”What are your operational directions?”

”Five strategic sectors,” Ram declared, tapping the pencil on the map.

”First: Burma.” Ram placed the pencil point directly on the border mountain ranges dividing Assam and Bengal from Upper Burma. ”General Aung San is attempting to consolidate power in Rangoon, but his grip on the frontier hill tribes is fragile. Direct our Samvardhan intelligence networks, which have been embedded among the Kachin, Chin, and Shan tribal councils for years, to step up operations immediately. Supply their leaders with gold bullion, light weapons, and shortwave field radios.

”Instruct the tribal elders that when Britain prepares to grant independence to Burma, every border tribe must loudly and formally demand an international plebiscite, demanding the democratic option to merge with the Republic of India. If Rangoon accepts, we expand our eastern defence buffer; if Rangoon refuses, those border areas remain an armed, unmanageable leverage point that ensures Burma can never pose a threat to our eastern flank.”

Ram moved the pencil tip down to the Southern Ocean, resting it on the island of Ceylon.

”Second: Ceylon.” Ram traced the northern and eastern coastlines of the island. ”Our Samvardhan cells among the Indian Tamil plantation labourers in the central highlands and the indigenous Tamils in Jaffna must be organised into unified, disciplined self-defence and political labour unions. Supply them with private financial backing, printing presses, and covert defence supplies.

”When London prepares to decolonise Ceylon, our Tamil networks must demand an absolute plebiscite for the northern and eastern provinces to join the Indian Union, or demand full dual-citizenship and constitutional veto rights in Colombo. The Sinhalese political elites must understand that any anti-Indian posture will result in the immediate partition of their island.”

He slid the pencil up into the high Himalayan ridge. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

”Third: Bhutan.” Ram drew a tight red circle around the mountain kingdom. ”They have been under a protectorate agreement with the British, and now they are sounding us for the same. But we are not the British.

Issue a quiet, uncompromising diplomatic ultimatum to King Jigme Wangchuck. Bhutan cannot exist as an isolated medieval state between India and a future assertive, militarised China. We will offer them modernisation, financial subsidies, and military protection, the same deal that so many tribe elders have accepted in North-east and Burma, on the absolute condition that they become a state of an independent Indian union. They either integrate with us, or they will be left completely isolated without a shield against northern expansion.”

His pencil shifted west along the snow peaks.

”Fourth: Nepal.” Ram’s eyes narrowed. ”Begin discreet, high-level overtures to King Tribhuvan and the democratic movement fighting the autocratic Rana oligarchy. The Rana regime is feudal, corrupt, and hated by the populace. We will offer secret financial, political, and military backing to restore King Tribhuvan and establish a constitutional democracy, in exchange for a treaty of perpetual defence and economic union with India. This will lay the long-term groundwork for Nepal’s ultimate, voluntary political merger into the Indian Republic.”

Finally, Ram set the pencil tip firmly on the northern princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.

”Fifth: Jammu and Kashmir.” Ram pressed the graphite tip into the map over the mountain passes. ”Maharaja Hari Singh is delusional, indecisive, and foolishly dreaming of an independent mountain kingdom. He does not understand that Jinnah views Kashmir as his primary prize. Dispatch two thousand of our most experienced veteran enlistees into Jammu immediately, disguised as civilian refugees, farm workers, and local defence volunteers.”

Ram tapped the map over the town of Jammu and the surrounding Hindu villages. ”Establish covert weapon armouries across every Hindu village in Jammu and the southern valleys. Distribute standard Lee-Enfield rifles, heavy revolvers, and ammunition directly to the village elders.

”If Pakistani tribal raiders or regular forces attempt to seize Kashmir by force, our local defence units will hold the line, protect our people, and crush any hostile advance until our regular national army can move in and secure the territory permanently.”

Shaktidas carefully noted down every operational directive in his cypher notebook, his face grave with the immense scale of the strategy.

”It is a vast, dangerous game, Ram,” Shaktidas whispered, closing his notebook. ”You are redrawing the map of Asia.”

Ram turned away from the wall map and walked to the high glass window, looking out into the dark, rain-swept night of New Delhi. In the distance, the domed silhouette of the Viceroy’s House stood shadowed against the stormy sky.

”The empire built this continent with iron and blood for their own profit, Shaktidas,” Ram Prasad Gupta said quietly, his eyes reflecting the pale glow of the desk lamp. ”They are leaving behind a broken, bleeding land. If we do not forge this nation with an iron hand now, our children will inherit nothing but ash and borders written by foreign clerks. Let the world talk of peace and morality; we will build a sovereign republic that no empire on earth will ever dare to break again.”
