Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1947

By June 1947, Mountbatten brought forward the date of independence to August 15, 1947, giving the British Empire less than seventy days to carve up a continent home to four hundred million people.

Sir Cyril Radcliffe, a British lawyer who had never set foot east of Paris, arrived in Delhi to head the Boundary Commissions. Locked in a hot, isolated bungalow with outdated census maps and conflicting claims from Congress and Muslim League lawyers, Radcliffe began drawing the lines that would divide Punjab and Bengal.

Late one evening, Ram stood in his private study in New Delhi, looking at a set of draft border maps quietly procured from a contact within Mountbatten’s private secretariat.

Shaktidas stood beside him, holding a lantern as Ram examined the thick red lines drawn across the fertile doabs of Punjab and the river deltas of Bengal.

Despite all my foreknowledge, all our economic lobbying, and all our preparation,’ Ram thought to himself, his brow furrowed with bitter disappointment, ’the official boundary line remains almost identical to the map I remembered from my past life. Radcliffe gave away Chittagong Hill Tracts to East Pakistan despite its ninety-seven per cent non-Muslim population. He divided Gurdaspur just enough to give us land access to Jammu, but left Lahore inside Pakistan.

Ram did not express anger. He folded the draft map calmly and laid it on his desk, but as a trusted colleague of many years, Shaktidas could see the disappointment in him, though he could not understand it; nobody could, save perhaps Patel, who knew Ram’s dream.

’Well, it is just the first stage, and India is in a better position than my past life. There will be opportunities to realise that dream later on.’ Ram thought, clearing the maps away.

”History has an immense, stubborn inertia, Shaktidas,” Ram said quietly, staring out the glass window into the rain-swept night. Radcliffe’s line is drawn in ink; our job was to ensure that the nation built within those lines is drawn in iron.”

Shaktidas had a frown on the cryptic remarks, but did not interrupt. He knew at times like this, Ram just needed to work through whatever was rattling in his brain by years of close association.

Ram turned back to his desk, picking up his pen.

”It does not matter that Lahore is lost,” Ram continued, his voice steady and resolute. ”What matters is that Eastern Punjab is completely purged of hostile elements, secured by our military cadres, and fully integrated. What matters is that West Bengal holds Calcutta, the port, and the coalfields, backed by a fortified frontier. What matters is that our industrial foundries, our scientific institutes, our agricultural reserves, and our military supply chains are intact and under our complete, sovereign control.”

”And the Constituent Assembly?” Shaktidas asked. ”Dr Ambedkar and Nehru are requesting your presence for the draft committee sessions on the Fundamental Rights Chapter.”

”Tell them I am unavailable,” Ram said firmly. ”I have quietly petitioned Patel and Nehru to suspend formal Constituent Assembly debates until October. Right now, every politician, every administrator, every police officer, and every soldier must focus one hundred per cent of their energy on maintaining public order, managing the refugee crisis, and securing the borders. Constitutional philosophy can wait three months; national survival cannot.”

By early August 1947, an uneasy, atmospheric truce enforced by the barrel of the gun hung over the subcontinent.

Across the vast plains of Northern India, the greatest migration in human history was reaching its agonising climax. Entire villages, millions of human beings, were on the move. Columns of bullock carts, miles long, stretched toward the new borders under the watchful, armed presence of disciplined defence cadres. British police and colonial magistrates had effectively ceased to function, sitting as useless onlookers inside their fading cantonments while the new order forged itself in blood, sweat, and discipline.

But the work was not done just yet; the South Indian migration was yet to begin, and if history proves inertial, then there would be further migration westward in the next few decades.

By August 14, 1947, every single princely state within the geographical orbit of India, with the sole exceptions of Hyderabad and Jammu & Kashmir, had signed the Instrument of Accession, surrendering their sovereignty to the Dominion of India.

On the night of August 14, inside the brightly lit hall of the Constituent Assembly in New Delhi, the political elite of the nation gathered. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru stood before the assembly, preparing to deliver his historic address to a waiting world.

While Ram was to be the Prime Minister of Independent India, he knew he was no orator. And he could not take away that speech from Nehru. It was that iconic. Rather, he would speak after Nehru immortalised those iconic words in this timeline as well.

Outside the grand building, away from the flashing cameras, the diplomats, and the cheering crowds, Ram Prasad Gupta stood alone on the wide stone terrace of the Viceregal Palace, now the Government House.

The monsoon rain had stopped. A cool night breeze swept across the grand ceremonial boulevard of Rajpath, carrying the distant, roaring cheers of tens of thousands of citizens gathered at the India Gate.

Shaktidas walked quietly onto the terrace, stopping a few paces behind Ram. He held a brass pocket watch in his hand, its ticking steady and rhythmic in the night.

”It is 11:58 PM, Ram,” Shaktidas said softly. ”In two minutes, Pakistan is born in Karachi. In two minutes and one second, India becomes an independent, sovereign republic.”

Ram did not answer immediately. He looked out over the darkened silhouette of New Delhi, the domed House, the grand stone arches, the ancient ruins of past empires buried beneath the modern asphalt.

He remembered his past life, the mundane corporate cubicle, the flickering fluorescent lights, the endless spreadsheets of a life spent in quiet, insignificant routine. He remembered the decades he had spent in this past century: building covert foundries in Kanpur, smuggling weapons across merchant networks, manipulating colonial enlistment drives, forging alliances with industrialists and revolutionaries, and preparing a continent for this exact, inevitable hour.

”Subhas is in the East,” Ram murmured to himself, thinking of Bose’s surviving cadres in Tokyo and Singapore. ”Our soldiers have returned from the West, hardened by world war. Our foundries are forged. Our women are organised. Our grain reserves are full. Our borders are guarded by steel.”

In the distance, the grand clock tower of the Secretariat began to chime midnight. Heavy, deep metallic strokes echoed across the dark, rain-swept capital.

ONE.

TWO.

THREE.

Down in the assembly chamber, Nehru’s eloquent voice rang out through the loudspeakers: ”At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom...”

Ram turned his back on the political speeches, looking north toward the dark horizon where Punjab and Kashmir lay under the starlit sky.

”Let the world talk of peace and morality, Shaktidas,” Ram Prasad Gupta said, his voice quiet, cold, and filled with unbroken, monumental weight as the final stroke of midnight echoed into the night. ”They are leaving behind a broken, bleeding continent. But we have built a sovereign republic that no empire on earth, and no enemy at our gates, will ever dare to break again.”

A/N: This is the last Chapter of Volume 1. India has gained independence. It was certainly a long road, wasn’t it? Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Leave reviews; power stones are also welcome. I will upload one interlude Chapter and the first Chapter of Volume 2 in a few hours.
