Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1945

The opening months of 1945 brought an unmistakable thaw to the frozen political landscape of the subcontinent, accompanied by the low, continuous rumble of world empire fracturing along its seams. Across the Mediterranean, the North African deserts, the muddy valleys of Monte Cassino, and the dense, leech-infested jungles of Arakan and Imphal, the global fires of war were beginning to consume their final fuel. With that slow retreat of battle came the first mass waves of demobilisation, hundreds of thousands of Indian soldiers returning home aboard troopships, their uniforms worn, their eyes changed forever by the sights of foreign devastation.

In a secluded industrial estate four miles outside Allahabad, set within a vast brick warehouse usually reserved for agricultural processing machinery, Ram Prasad Gupta stood on a makeshift wooden platform. Below him gathered nearly five hundred returning servicemen. They were men of every background, Punjabi gunners, Tamil signalmen, Maratha infantrymen, Bihari sappers, and Gorkha riflemen, all drawn from the extensive recruitment and logistics network Ram had quietly fostered throughout the war years.

The hall was dark save for the shaft of late-afternoon sunlight breaking through the high clerestory windows, casting long, geometric shadows across the concrete floor. The air smelled of diesel oil, damp canvas, and raw jute.

Ram stepped up to the podium, his posture straight, his grey wool coat immaculate. His voice, clear, deep, and devoid of grandstanding theatricality, carried easily to the high iron rafters.

”You return to a country that stands on the precipice of a new world,” Ram began, his eyes moving methodically across the ranks of disciplined, sun-darkened faces. ”And I say to you today, without hesitation or reservation: you are the heroes of humanity.

”You were thrown into the greatest furnace of violence history has ever witnessed, and you broke the back of global fascism. You proved that the Indian soldier is second to no fighter on earth. We acknowledge your sacrifices, and this nation vows, in cold iron and memory, never to forget the blood you spilt on distant soil.”

A rustle passed through the crowd as men shifted slightly, their chins rising.

”Many of you bled alongside British soldiers,” Ram continued, his tone dropping into an intimate, measured gravity. ”You shared rations in waterlogged trenches. You carried their wounded, and they carried yours. You built a genuine, brotherly bond forged in fire and shared mortality. That camaraderie was real, and it was honourable.

”But do not confuse the man in the trench beside you with the empire that sent him. We are still fighting for India’s freedom. When the dust of this global war settles completely, the men in London will look at this continent not with gratitude, but with the cold calculation of imperial survival. You must understand this bitter truth: yesterday’s brother can, by order of his officers, become tomorrow’s enemy.”

The silence in the warehouse became absolute. Even the birds in the rafters seemed to go quiet.

”I demand no forced allegiances,” Ram said softly, scanning the crowd. ”If any man among you feels in his heart that his duty ends here, if you wish to return to your farms and live out your days in quiet comfort, or if you disagree with the path we walk, step forward now. You may leave this network today with our deepest gratitude, full financial compensation, and no ill will or prejudice whatsoever. No man will question your honour.”

Not a single soldier moved. The ranks remained as firm as iron rebar.

”Then hear your task,” Ram said, his voice ringing with quiet authority. ”Teach what you have learned to our newer members. Pass on your technical mastery, your knowledge of artillery mathematics, radio communication, tactical manoeuvring, armoured mechanics, and supply discipline.

”Pick up civilian trades in your towns and villages, integrate into your local communities, and introduce to our network any trustworthy comrades you have brought back with you. The empire’s reign over this land is ending, and when it falls, we must be the unbreakable steel frame that prevents this nation from collapsing into chaos.”

Later that evening, outside the illuminated mess tent pitched in the compound’s rear courtyard, three returning enlistees sat around a small iron brazier: Nath, a seasoned artillery sergeant from the United Provinces; Nair, a sharp-eyed signals officer from Kerala; and Thapa, a quiet, broad-shouldered Gorkha corporal.

Nath blew gently on a tin mug of scalding tea, watching the embers glow red against the gathering dusk. ”He speaks straight; Ram Sahib does. No flowery speeches like the Congress lawyers in Allahabad, no moral grandstanding either. I fought in Italy.

”The Tommy next to me in the mud near the Po River was a decent lad from Manchester, shared his last tin of bread and biscuits with me when our supply line got cut by mortar fire. We bled together. But Ram Sahib is right. If London commands them to hold the line in Delhi or Bombay, that same Manchester boy will be ordered to rack his bolt and fire into our crowds.”

Nair adjusted his brass-rimmed spectacles, leaning forward. ”It is the cold arithmetic of statecraft, Sergeant. The British Empire is financially broken. I served in the signal’s headquarters in Calcutta; I saw the encrypted traffic passing between Whitehall and the Viceregal Lodge. They can barely feed their home population without American Lend-lease shipments.

”They cannot maintain an army of occupation here for another two years without collapsing their own domestic economy. What Ram Sahib is organising here isn’t just a militia or an underground cell, it is a state apparatus ready to assume operational control the minute the British military command vacates the cantonments.”

Thapa, sitting quietly on an inverted wooden crate, wiped the oiled blade of his kukri with a piece of flannel before sliding it smoothly into its leather sheath. His dark eyes reflected the flickering orange light. ”My battalion was told we fought for the King-Emperor,” Thapa said, his Hindi spoken with a clipped, precise Gorkha cadence.

”But when the Japanese army came through the jungle at Imphal, it wasn’t King George’s crown we were protecting; it was our own land, our own people. If Ram Sahib says we go back to the hills and train the young boys in rifle drill and terrain defence, we train them. No foreign empire can hold a country where every mountain village has twenty trained gunners waiting in the shadows.”

While the British Indian Army demobilised its regular divisions, a different category of Indian soldier was arriving under heavy guard at internment camps across the country: captured personnel of the Indian National Army (INA) who had fought under Subhas Chandra Bose in Burma and Malaya. Imperial courts were already preparing high-treason trials at the Red Fort in Delhi, intending to make an example of them.

Ram acted with decisive, quiet speed. Utilising his vast network of lawyers, merchant guilds, and regional sympathisers, he organised immediate legal defence funds, welfare stipends for the families of INA prisoners, and underground transit routes for those who managed to evade capture. Publicly and covertly, Ram hailed the INA troops as returning national heroes who had sacrificed everything for the dream of Indian liberation.
