Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1945

In November 1945, Ram travelled to the Wardha Ashram in the Central Provinces for his first formal, face-to-face meeting with Mahatma Gandhi.

The ashram was serene, surrounded by dusty acacia trees and low clay-and-wattle huts. The air smelled of woodsmoke, freshly turned earth, and dry cotton.

Ram was ushered into Gandhi’s small, immaculate room. Sunlight streamed through the open wooden window, illuminating the simple woven mat where Mahatma Gandhi sat cross-legged. Gandhi was bare-chested, wearing his simple khadi loincloth, his hands moving with practised, rhythmic fluid efficiency as he spun coarse cotton thread on his wooden charkha (spinning wheel).

Ram removed his shoes at the threshold, stepped inside, and offered a respectful, traditional namaskar.

Gandhi paused his spinning, adjusting his round wire-rimmed spectacles, and looked up with eyes that were remarkably bright, sharp, and disarmingly gentle.

”Welcome, Ram Prasad,” Gandhi said, gesturing with a small, weathered hand to the open floor mat opposite him. ”Sit. Sit down.”

Ram sat cross-legged on the simple mat. ”Thank you, Bapu. It is a profound honour to meet you in person. I have followed your journey for decades, and I wish to express my deepest, most sincere admiration for your lifetime of selfless sacrifice and the moral awakening you have brought to the millions of this land.”

Gandhi smiled gently, the corners of his eyes crinkling. He resumed his spinning, the soft, rhythmic hum of the wheel filling the quiet room.

”You speak warm and gracious words, Ram Prasad,” Gandhi said softly, his voice carrying a light, melodic cadence. ”But you do not agree with my methods, do you?”

Ram did not hesitate or offer diplomatic platitudes. He looked directly into Gandhi’s eyes.

”No, Gandhiji, I do not,” Ram stated plainly. ”I do not believe that non-violence alone can defeat an entrenched imperial power that understands only force and economics. But I admire your strength of character, Bapu. I admire your absolute conviction. You practice what you preach, you live among the poorest of our people, and you do not compromise your principles for political expediency. In a world full of cynical politicians, that is exceedingly rare.”

Gandhi chuckled softly, setting the thread spindle down on his lap. ”At least you are honest, Ram Prasad. Many men come here and tell me they worship non-violence while carrying anger and deceit in their hearts. You bring no deceit.”

Gandhi’s expression grew serious, his gaze searching Ram’s face. ”Jawaharlal is my chosen political successor,” Gandhi said softly, his voice filled with deep paternal affection. ”He possesses the heart, the passion, and the democratic vision to unite our diverse people and give this nation a moral voice in the world.

”I am told you are building a formidable political and industrial organisation for the coming elections, and that many young men and soldiers look to you rather than to the Congress executive.”

Gandhi paused, laying a gentle hand on his knee. ”I ask you, Ram Prasad, to step aside for Jawaharlal. Do not create division in the leadership of our country when freedom is finally at hand. Work with him, support him, but let him lead.”

For the first time in his public life, Ram openly expressed his intention to seek formal political office and shape the state directly.

”Forgive me, Bapu, but no,” Ram replied, his voice firm, steady, and entirely devoid of malice. ”I cannot step aside, nor will I leave the governance of this country to idealism alone. Let the public decide through the democratic process what leadership they desire.”

Gandhi watched him closely, silent, as Ram continued.

”Ideals alone cannot build or defend a nation, Bapu,” Ram said, leaning forward slightly. ”The world is shrinking at a terrifying pace. Science and technology are advancing with ruthless velocity. We live in an age of the electric telegraph, the international telephone, supersonic jet flight, and atomic bombs that can erase whole cities in an instant.

”If we attempt to govern a nation of four hundred million people using medieval village romanticism and moral appeals to international goodwill, we will leave our children helpless against the next foreign aggressor who decides to conquer us.”

Ram’s voice resonated with the full weight of his decades of foresight. ”I have great need of your moral ideals, Bapu. Your spirit is essential to give this nation a conscience. But conscience without steel is a corpse. We must build a solid, unbreakable foundation of heavy industry, advanced science, modern military power, and economic sovereignty to protect those ideals, and I intend to build that foundation.”

Gandhi looked at Ram for a long, quiet moment. There was no anger in the Mahatma’s eyes, only a profound, reflective sorrow mixed with quiet respect.

”You speak the language of the modern world, Ram Prasad,” Gandhi said softly, turning back to his spinning wheel. ”Perhaps that is the world our people will choose. But remember this: if you build a house of steel, make sure the human heart inside it does not turn to iron.”

”I will remember, Bapu,” Ram said quietly. He bowed his head respectfully, stood up, and stepped out into the bright afternoon sun.

By December 1945, as the year drew to a close, the political atmosphere across India had reached a fever pitch. The provincial election campaigns were in full swing, British authority was visibly deteriorating, and communal tensions, stoked by political separatists and imperial divide-and-rule tactics, threatened to plunge the major cities into bloody civil strife.

Recognising the immediate, existential danger, Ram convened an emergency, closed-door council in Calcutta with the leading figures of the Marwari, Sindhi, and Gujarati merchant guilds, the financial titans who controlled the commercial, banking, and industrial pulse of Western and Northern India.

The assembly took place inside the grand, marble-pillared courtyard of an ancestral merchant haveli in the heart of Burra Bazar. Over sixty of the nation’s wealthiest industrialists, grain merchants, shipping magnates, and banking patriarchs sat on white floor cushions surrounding a heavy teak conference table.

The room was heavy with tension. Outside, the distant din of political rallies and street demonstrations echoed through the narrow lanes of Calcutta.

Ram stood at the head of the assembly, dressed in a dark silk sherwani. His presence commanded absolute silence from the room of millionaires and trade bosses.

”A massive, catastrophic political storm is coming upon this subcontinent,” Ram declared, his voice cutting through the humid evening air like a blade. ”The British withdrawal will not be a peaceful, orderly handover of keys over afternoon tea. The next two years will be the most tumultuous, violent, and chaotic in our modern history, marked by administrative breakdown, severe territorial division, and widespread civil strife.”

He leaned across the heavy oak table, his gaze locking onto the senior guild elders.

”We must mobilise our total economic and human capacity immediately,” Ram commanded. ”Use my network of returning, battle-hardened soldiers to form organised, highly disciplined local defence militias across every district, city ward, and trade corridor. These militias will be armed, trained, and integrated into our communication grid to protect Sanatan communities, trade routes, granaries, banking houses, and sacred cultural sites from communal violence or administrative collapse.”

Ram raised his hand, suppressing the anxious murmurs rising from the guild leaders.

”Forego short-term commercial profits for now,” Ram urged, his voice ringing with intense, uncompromising authority. ”This is not the hour for private hoarding, price gouging, or balance sheet speculation! This is the hour to pour all our energy, wealth, logistics, and organisational muscle into the ultimate defence and preservation of India and Sanatan interests. If our communities are destroyed and our land is partitioned into chaotic, hostile fragments, your accumulated gold will be worthless paper.”

He looked around the circle of veteran merchants, seeing their hesitation dissolve into grim, resolute determination.

”Stand firm,” Ram concluded, his eyes reflecting the warm glow of the haveli’s chandelier light. ”The old empire is dying, and a new nation is struggling to be born out of fire and blood. If we act now with unity, steel, and unyielding foresight, when the smoke clears from the coming storm... we will be standing, unbroken, fully armed, and ready to lead this land into its sovereign destiny.”
