Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

The house did not collapse. The world did not stop. The sun did not fail to rise.

The routines remained, but they had lost their centre. The morning chant did not resume. The courtyard felt larger, emptier, its silence no longer structured but hollow.

People came. Neighbours, relatives, Uncle Braj Lal and cousin Shyam Sundar, the broader Marwari community, families Ram had heard of from Hari Gopal’s mouth in those evenings but never seen. They spoke in low tones. They offered condolences, help, advice. They left.

Vidya received them all with the same composure. She did not weep publicly. She did not withdraw. She continued her work, each action deliberate, as if refusing to allow disruption to define her.

Ram moved through it all without visible reaction. His grief did not manifest as tears; it reorganised itself into something else.

Clarity.

The compensation came weeks later, formal, documented, processed through the same system that had ordered the lathi charge. It was explained as recognition, a restitution for the loss suffered, facilitated through the efforts of leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi.

Ram accepted it without argument. He did not thank the British official who came to give the first cheque, nor did he disrespect the man in any way.

To him, it was not an apology; it was a resource to be used.

By the time he entered the University of Allahabad to study science, the direction of his response had already formed, not emotionally, but structurally. Hari’s words had not been abstract. They had been instructions, just waiting for him to apply them somewhere.

Power yields when it cannot remain. To make the power yield requires pressure, not just from one source, but multiple, applied simultaneously and continuously. The pressure requires power and capacity. The capacity building requires a systematic approach.

Ram understood systems.

The temple in their neighbourhood offered itself not through secrecy, but through neglect. Its basement lay unused, considered unsuitable for anything of value. Above it, however, life continued without interruption. Bells rang at fixed intervals, their sound carrying across the neighbourhood. Kirtans filled the space with collective voices, rising and falling in patterns that masked all other noise. And most of all, the British turned a blind eye to the strange practices of old women and widows who had nothing to exploit.

Ram observed this for weeks before acting.

He measured sound without instruments, by distance, by rhythm, by repetition. He noted the times of peak activity, the intervals of quiet, the structure of the building itself.

Only when he was certain did he begin.

The first items brought in were insignificant.

Small tools, light, almost as if he were experimenting, scrap metal, small components that drew no special attention; nothing that suggested intent. Over time, these instruments accumulated.

Work began at night, cautiously, with adjustments made after each attempt. Ram did not rush production. He studied failure. He corrected it. His goal was not improvisation. It was replication.

British standard firearms. Reliable. Consistent.

His education provided the theoretical understanding. Observation and iteration provided the rest. Failures were analysed, not discarded. Adjustments were made systematically.

Supply required a different kind of thinking. The metal Ram could obtain by himself did not yield much use, barely two rounds fired before the barrel became unusable. He was lucky it did not explode.

Through Braj Lal and Shyam Sundar, access to the machines and materials of the Ishapore Ordnance Factory became possible. Not openly. Never openly.

Items were diverted slowly. Machinery marked as condemned. Components listed as irreparable. Raw materials recorded as wastage. Blueprints reproduced over time, copied in fragments, assembled gradually into usable designs.

Each action was small. Each record plausible. Together, they formed a pipeline.

Ram selected the workforce with equal care. He did not recruit men drawn by ideology; rather, he recruited those who understood consequences.

Relatives of families already affected. Sons of widows who resided within the temple’s extended quarters. Men who needed income and had no reason to trust authority. They were paid regularly.

They were given specific tasks. They were not given full knowledge.

The compensation money funded the men. The Gupta family’s inherited wealth funded the rest.

Slowly, the output stabilised. Pistols and revolvers first, then rifles. Ammunition followed, not in large quantities, but in sufficient supply to ensure usability.

What had been given as acknowledgement of loss became the means of response.

By 1930, when the Salt March began under Gandhi, Ram made a decision that appeared, on the surface, to align him with a different approach.

He joined the movement publicly.

He marched among thousands, his presence indistinguishable, his role unremarkable. To an observer, he was one among many, another young man drawn to the call for civil disobedience.

But Ram did not see contradiction.

He saw structure and opportunity. This was another way to exert pressure, perhaps even more effective than the revolutionaries.

Movements created visibility. The visibility created opportunities to form connections; and connections created access.

The police response followed its own predictable pattern. Orders were given. Crowds were warned. Lathis (police batons) were raised.

Ram could not avoid it. He moved forward with the others, not recklessly, but with intent. The blow came suddenly, a sharp, glancing strike across his temple that disrupted everything at once. The world tilted, sound collapsing into a dull roar as he fell. For a moment, there was nothing but disorientation.

Then, something else.

It did not return gradually. It arrived whole.

Memories, though it registered as just a headache from the blow to Ram at first. Memories, not of this life, but of another.

A different India, roads filled with vehicles moving at impossible speed, buildings rising in glass and steel, systems of data and information that he had once navigated effortlessly. A life defined not by survival, but by analysis.

And then, this life.

This moment. This purpose. They did not conflict. They merged.

The patterns he had always seen. The systems he had always understood. The history he had once studied and now lived within. All of it converged.

Ram opened his eyes slowly, the present reasserting itself around him, the noise of the march, the movement of bodies, the sharp smell of dust and sweat and blood.

Nothing outward had changed, but everything inward had. He pushed himself up, steadying his balance, his mind no longer divided but unified in a way it had never been before because now, he understood not only the necessity of action, but its place within a larger design.
