Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

1936-37

July 1936, Naini Central Jail, Allahabad

The July heat had settled over Naini Jail like a sodden blanket. Moisture hung heavy in the high-ceilinged meeting room, bringing out the sharp, alkaline smell of damp stone and yellowing paper.

Vallabhbhai Patel sat opposite Ram; his hands folded quietly over his knee. The legal papers he had brought as a cover lay unread between them. Three months had passed since their first meeting, but it was clear from the line of Patel’s jaw that the young man’s words had lingered in his mind.

”I thought about our last conversation,” Patel said, his voice measured, breaking the quiet hum of the afternoon. ”Your grand map. Your vision for the East. I feel your dream is impossible to achieve, Ram. Even under the best of circumstances, the world does not bend to such grand geometries.”

Ram smiled faintly, adjusting his plain cotton kurta. ”Even you, Sardar-ji? But that, perhaps, is the joy of being human. We are bound by practical limits, yet we are gifted with the capacity to dream impossibilities and strive toward them. It requires a quiet acceptance of the practical reality, but also the unyielding will to change it.”

Patel looked at him, the harsh, pragmatic lines of his face softening ever so slightly. Beneath the young man’s calm demeanour lay a formidable, steel-ribbed conviction. For the first time, a flash of genuine, unspoken admiration crossed the Sardar’s eyes.

”On a more practical point, then,” Patel said, leaning forward, his tone shifting into the cold, strategic register that made him the backbone of the Congress machine. ”Pakistan. What are your thoughts?”

”Inevitable,” Ram replied plainly. ”Now that someone has written that pamphlet in Cambridge. It gives a sharp, intellectual shape to what was previously just a vague sentiment. In fact, when I first read Choudhry Rahmat Ali’s text, even I was almost convinced by its logic. It is that persuasive.”

Patel raised an eyebrow, surprised by the admission. ”Persuasive?”

”Call me a cynic, Sardar, but look at the foundational structures,” Ram said, his tone turning analytical. ”An Abrahamic worldview and a Dharmic worldview operate on fundamentally incompatible axioms. One is rooted in absolute exclusivity: one truth, one book, one hard line dividing the believer from the outsider. The other is a vast, decentralised ecosystem of pluralism that absorbs, assimilates, and tolerates endless variations of truth. When a minority operating on an exclusive theology reaches a critical mass within a pluralistic society, it will inevitably seek a sovereign border to preserve its absolute identity. It cannot comfortably exist as merely one thread in a seamless tapestry.”

Patel remained silent, his brow furrowed, his eyes fixed on the scarred wood of the table. The theoretical framing was stark, stripped of the comforting political rhetoric of unity that filled the public plazas, but it mirrored the bitter friction Patel himself was already witnessing in the provincial political landscape.

”I am inclined to agree on the inevitability,” Patel said slowly, his voice heavy. ”The fault lines are deepening every month. But if you see this division coming, are you still so sure we won’t slide into absolute chaos?”

”If a simple scholar like me can see it, better minds than mine can see it too,” Ram said softly. ”And I am hoping those better minds will do something to safeguard what remains.”

”And what would you have us do?” Patel asked, testing him. ”What are your thoughts on handling the reality of it?”

”Initially? A total, organised population transfer,” Ram said without hesitation. ”A clean, absolute division of populations along the new borders. Perhaps that will suffice to secure a lasting peace.”

Patel watched him closely. ”And if it does not suffice?”

”Then we war,” Ram said, his tone chillingly matter-of-fact. ”And I have total belief that in fifteen years, we can reduce Pakistan to a landlocked rump state, if not outright erase it from existence.”

Patel’s forehead creased into a deep, heavy frown. The sheer ruthlessness of the proposition struck a jarring chord against his moral framework. While Patel was a hard-headed realist who never shied from necessary force, the casual mention of dismantling a nation and uprooting millions crossed into a territory that troubled him.

”And the population left on the other side of that line?” Patel asked, his voice stern.

”If they wish to integrate, to accept the foundational ethos of this land, then they are Indians,” Ram replied smoothly. ”If not... there are dozens of Islamic countries in the world for them to choose from.”

Patel leaned back, his scowl deepening. ”And internationally? You speak of tearing up borders and waging decade-long wars of attrition as if the world will simply stand by and watch. We live in an era of international law, of the League of Nations.”

”Come on, Sardar-ji,” Ram let out a soft, dry laugh. ”Did anyone care when we were conquered? Did the world intervene when the Americans sailed into Edo Bay with heavy cannons to open up Japan, ’gunboat diplomacy,’ wasn’t it? Or when the Americans broke treaty after sacred treaty with the native tribes to expand west?”

”That was a different time,” Patel countered firmly, shaking his head. ”The world is changing. The international order will not tolerate such overt aggression.”

”Japan is conquering China today,” Ram said quietly, leaning across the table, ”and nobody bats an eye. The League writes stern notes while armies march. Power dictates terms, Sardar-ji. It always has.”

Patel leaned back, his scowl deepening as he tapped his knuckles against the wooden table. ”You talk of moving millions like pieces on a chessboard, Ram. A total population transfer? Forced displacement of tens of millions of soul-weary peasants who only know the dirt of their own ancestral villages? That is not statecraft; that is a human tragedy waiting to unfold.

”It is a question of trust, Sardar-ji. Do we trust that, say fifty years later, the Muslim population within India will not demand a separate state again? The social distrust that is created will remain, even after generations.” Ram responded in a heavy voice.

And fifteen years of war, conflict? India will be born poor, starved, and destitute. We cannot build schools, factories, or irrigation canals if every rupee is burned in the furnaces of perpetual war. You would destroy the home to kill the rat inside it.”

Ram agreed privately, but he also knew things, things he could not say that would allow for these conditions to exist. ”A clean, albeit painful, population exchange costs heavily today, but it pays a dividend of total internal stability for a century. As for the cost of war... what is the alternative? If we leave a hostile, ideologically antithetical state on our flank, we will spend the next century building border fences, stationing standing armies, fighting proxy insurgencies, and living in constant suspicion anyway.

”We will spend multiples of as much money over the years of creeping friction as you would in fifteen years of decisive resolution. The choice isn’t between war and peace; it is between one short, sharp agony now, or a slow, endless bleeding that never stops.” Ram proposed. ”And, I don’t want our future generations to live in a state of perpetual conflict.” He admitted softly.

”You dismiss the international community far too lightly,” Patel said, his voice dropping into a stern, gravelly tone. ”We are not 19th-century imperialists, and the world is no longer a wild frontier where gunboats reign supreme without consequence. An emerging, fragile India will need foreign trade, diplomatic recognition, heavy industrial equipment, and food aid. If we march across borders, tear up international mandates, and annex territory by force, we will be branded a rogue state before our flag is even raised over the Red Fort. Isolation will strangle this nation before it learns to breathe.”

”I agree partially, Sardar-ji. But, Sardar, the ’international community’ is a polite fiction invented by empires to freeze the map in their own favour once they have finished conquering it. Look at history: the world respects power, precedent, and finished facts, not moral appeals. When the dust settles, and a nation controls its geography, the same international community that condemned you will line up at your ports to trade, because they cannot afford to ignore a market of four hundred million people sitting on the Indian Ocean. They will not isolate us if we control the sea lanes between Europe and East Asia. They will adjust their moral compass to fit our geopolitical reality, as they always have for every strong state.”

”You put far too much faith in the idea that a young nation can absorb external expansion while its own house is on fire,” Patel warned, his eyes narrowing.

”We have over five hundred princely states sitting inside our belly, each with its own ruler, its own army, and its own ambitions to play sovereign. If we turn our eyes outward to Burma, Kashmir, or the Irrawaddy, those five hundred rulers will carve us from within. Before we dream of vast frontiers, we must first ensure the floor beneath our feet does not collapse.”

”And that, Sardar-ji, is precisely why you are indispensable to this nation, because no one else has the iron hand required to bend five hundred princes to the national will. But internal consolidation and external posture are not mutually exclusive; they are two sides of the same coin. A nation that demonstrates absolute, uncompromising strength on its borders sends a chilling, unambiguous message to every domestic traitor and hesitant Maharaja. If the princes see a state hesitant to secure its natural geographic limits, they will smell weakness and rebel. Show them a state willing to do whatever it takes to secure its perimeter, and they will sign their instruments of accession without firing a single shot.”

”The world will not wait for us to put our house in order and join it. Rather, scientific innovation will continue, empires by other names will continue to carve up the globe. We must be ready to hit the ground running on all fronts, despite our challenges, or we will forever be slaves to the whims and fancies of others.” Ram’s eyes looked past Patel, past the jail as he spoke.

Patel sat motionless for a long moment, the quiet hum of the jail surrounding them. He did not smile, nor did he nod in total agreement. But the heavy, calculating stare he fixed upon Ram was different now; it was the look of an iron-willed pragmatist recognising an intellect that, however radical, operated on the same cold, unyielding currency of power as the real world.

Patel did not come to meet Ram personally after July; he arrived in letters. Letters that Ram responded to enthusiastically. They discussed various topics. Disagreed far more than the opposite. But a mutual respect bloomed between the two.

In early 1937, change came.

Provincial elections had been held under the framework of the Government of India Act 1935, and political dynamics shifted accordingly. It was in this context that Jawaharlal Nehru intervened, securing Ram’s release. Having been the face of the Congress in the elections, Jawaharlal Nehru found no need to keep a young, popular leader languishing in prison, especially when he agreed with the youngster half of the time.

The process was administrative; its effect, immediate.

When Ram Prasad Gupta stepped out of the prison gates in early 1937, the light did not feel different in any dramatic sense. It was the same harsh sun, the same dust rising from the road with each passing cart, the same distant noise of a city that did not pause for individual absence. And yet, something had shifted, not in the air, but in the arrangement of things within it.

He stood still for a moment longer than necessary, not out of hesitation, but to observe. A man leaving prison too quickly appeared eager. A man who paused appeared composed. Ram chose the latter.

A carriage waited a short distance away. Not ostentatious, not marked, but deliberate. A man seated within it gestured lightly; Jawaharlal Nehru. The man who would become Independent India’s first selected and elected Prime Minister, Gandhi’s chosen heir.

The journey through Allahabad unfolded in silence at first. The city passed in fragments, shops reopening, conversations mid-sentence, children weaving through traffic with practised ease. Life had not stopped in his absence. It had adjusted, absorbed, and continued.

Nehru broke the silence.

”You have been away at an interesting time,” he said, his tone measured but not distant.

Ram turned slightly, acknowledging the statement. ”So, I have gathered. You won the majority of the seats. Congratulations.”

”There have been changes,” Nehru continued. ”The elections, the new provincial structures... responsibilities are no longer theoretical. We are beginning to govern, in parts.”

Ram watched a group of men arguing outside a tea stall as they passed. Their gestures were sharp, their words indistinct but emphatic.

”And how does it feel?” he asked. ”To govern within the system set by those we oppose?”

Nehru allowed himself a faint smile. ”It feels,” he said, ”like the beginning of something imperfect, but necessary. We cannot move from subjugation to sovereignty in a single step. This”, he gestured outward, as if indicating the city, the system, the moment, ”is a transition.”

Ram considered the word.

”Transitions,” he said slowly, ”depend on direction as much as movement.”

Nehru glanced at him, studying the statement rather than responding immediately. ”You believe we are moving in the wrong direction?”

”I believe,” Ram replied, ”not moving would be the worst thing. Moving without considering our footing and destination is what we are doing now.”

”And what foundation and destination do you refer to?”

Ram did not answer immediately. Instead, he looked out again at the passing streets. A group of students stood outside a bookshop, engaged in an animated discussion. A few feet away, another group watched them, not participating, but not indifferent either.

”The idea,” Ram said finally, ”that transitioning power from the British to ourselves will unify this nation.”

Nehru’s expression did not harden, but it grew more attentive. ”You think it will not?”

”I think it may expose cracks we have chosen not to confront and the British, among others, have widened.”

The carriage slowed as it approached a crowded intersection. Vendors called out prices, voices overlapping in a rhythm that was both chaotic and familiar.

Nehru leaned back slightly. ”You have spent a long time in confinement,” he said. ”It changes perspective. One begins to see patterns where perhaps there are only moments.”

Ram met his gaze. ”Perhaps.”

For a brief moment, neither spoke.

”Come to the meetings,” Nehru said after a while. ”We need voices that question, even if they do not agree. Especially then.”

Ram inclined his head slightly. ”I will attend.”
