Reborn in 1914: I Will Build India into a Superpower

Allahabad entered the story not as destiny, but as calculation.

”We had become rootless,” Hari started, ”though our community ties were strong; once Agra became a den of tyranny and chaos, we did not want to return to the scarcity and struggle of Bikaner.” He continued. ”So, we moved further east, along the Yamuna, to Allahabad. It sits where movement happens,” Hari explained. ”Two rivers meet here. Routes cross. Goods pass through.”

He did not romanticise it.

”It was not Agra,” he said. ”But it did not need to be.”

Here, the family adapted again.

”We did not return to fixed trade,” Hari said. ”Instead, we focused on short-term opportunities.”

”Short-term?” Ram asked.

”Yes. Buy when prices are low. Sell when they rise. Move quickly. Do not remain tied.”

”Why? Is that better?” Ram asked.

”It is safer,” Hari replied. ”When the world is uncertain, and the world was very uncertain. You could not name the true ruler, whether it was the Mughal scion or the Marathas. Each ruler brought with him his own rules. And enemies.”

It was in Allahabad that the family changed in a way more significant than migration.

”Our community, as a whole, is not known for taking risks. That can be a good thing, at times, and a bad thing too. As trade became dangerous, we began to invest in education,” Hari said one evening, his tone quieter, more deliberate.

Ram looked at him, puzzled. ”Was that not done before?”

”Not like this,” Hari said.

He chose his words carefully, as though he were correcting something long misunderstood.

”Trade can sustain a family,” he said. ”But knowledge can protect it.”

Ram listened closely.

”They educated their sons,” Hari continued. Then, after a pause, ”And their daughters.”

Ram blinked.

”That was unusual, still is,” Hari added.

”Why?” Ram asked.

”Because most did not see value in it,” Hari said. ”They saw daughters as temporary members of the household.”

”And we did not?”

Hari shook his head.

”Knowledge is not diminished by who holds it,” he said.

From the doorway, Vidya paused for just a moment before returning to her work.

Ram noticed the glance.

He noticed everything.

Hari’s own path within that inheritance had diverged from his brother’s. More influenced by his religion, a byproduct of growing up frail with a huge temple complex in the neighbourhood, reciting epics: the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, with the priests, left its indelible mark on Hari.

Where others leaned toward Persian or English for administrative advantage, Hari, fascinated by his childhood epics, had turned inward, toward Sanskrit.

Not as an ornament. As a discipline.

One afternoon, when the heat pressed down heavily enough to still even the street outside, Hari called Ram into the courtyard.

”Sit,” he said.

Ram obeyed, folding his legs beneath him.

Hari placed a small wooden board between them. On it, a few simple Sanskrit words had been written in careful script.

”You hear me speak it every morning,” Hari said. ”Now you will begin to understand it.”

Ram nodded.

Hari pointed to the first word.

”Read.”

Ram hesitated, then tried. The pronunciation was uneven, the syllables uncertain.

Hari corrected him immediately, not harshly, but precisely.

”Again.”

Ram repeated it.

”Again.”

By the fourth attempt, the word had settled into shape.

Hari nodded once.

”This is the language that will connect you to your roots. Our ancestors created the grandest of epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, in this language. At the height of Hindu culture, Sanskrit ruled the roost.” Hari began, ”This is not just a language,” he said. ”It teaches you how to think clearly, as our ancestors used to. Each word has a structure. Each sentence has order. If you learn this properly, your mind will follow the same discipline.”

Ram listened more seriously than most boys his age would have.

”From now on,” Hari added, ”at home, you will speak in Sanskrit as much as you can.”

Ram looked up, surprised. ”Only Sanskrit?”

”At home, only Sanskrit. As much as possible,” Hari said. ”Outside, you speak what others speak. Inside, you learn to speak properly. Being multilingual has its own benefits.”

Ram considered this. It was difficult. Which meant it mattered. He nodded.

”I will try, Babu ji.”

Hari held his gaze for a moment, then gave a small, approving nod.

”Do not try,” he said. ”Do it.”

”As trade became less predictable,” Hari continued in later evenings, ”some members of the family entered service.”

”What kind of service?” Ram asked.

”As munshis,” Hari said. ”Accountants. Record-keepers. Managers of information.”

Ram’s interest sharpened immediately.

”They worked for nobles first, Mughals, Marathas, Jaats; it did not matter,” Hari said. ”And later, for the British.”

The word carried weight.

”Why would the British need them?” Ram asked.

”Because they did not understand everything,” Hari said. ”Language. Systems. Accounts. They required men who could translate complexity into order.”

Ram considered this.

Understanding, it seemed, held its own kind of power.

”Your chacha-ji, Braj Lal, is one of them,” Hari said.

Ram straightened slightly.

”He works with an English bade sahib connected to the Ishapore Ordnance Factory.”

”What does he do there?” Ram asked.

”He manages accounts,” Hari said. ”Makes decisions the officer relies on, even if he does not fully understand them.”

”Then who is in control?” Ram asked.

Hari met his gaze.

”The one who understands,” he said.

The answer was consistent.

Deliberately so.

There was one final element to the story, though it was never presented all at once.

It emerged gradually, across evenings, in fragments that only later formed a pattern.

”With each generation,” Hari said one night, ”something else grew.”

Ram waited.

”A question.”

”What kind of question?”

”Whether those who rule should always be obeyed.”

The words were quiet, but they carried weight.

”Why would they not be?” Ram asked.

”Because not all rules are just,” Hari said.

”And the British?” Ram asked, more carefully this time.

Hari did not answer immediately.

”They do not belong to this land,” he said finally. ”And they do not rule for it.”

The courtyard felt smaller after that.

School revealed what the household had already begun shaping.

Ram was ahead.

Not dramatically, not in a way that drew immediate attention, but steadily, consistently.

Numbers came easily. Patterns revealed themselves without effort. Science followed the same logic: cause and effect, observable, repeatable.

”Good,” his teacher said once, tapping his slate.

Ram did not react outwardly, but he remembered.

One night, after a longer silence than usual, Ram asked: ”Babu ji... will they always rule?”

Hari knew who he meant. He looked out into the darkness for a long moment before answering. ”No.”

”How do you know?”

”Because no rule is permanent,” Hari said.

Ram absorbed this, then asked:

”Then what happens?”

Hari turned to him. ”That depends,” he said.

”On what?”

A pause and then, ”On those who understand what is happening.”

Ram held his gaze; he did not yet know what that meant. But he did not forget it.

That night, lying awake, Ram did not think of Bikaner or Agra as places. He thought of movement. Of patterns. Of rules, and what happened when they stopped making sense. And though he did not yet realise it, the inheritance he carried was no longer just of trade or survival. It was of observation. Of discipline. Of understanding systems from within and, slowly, quietly, of questioning the authority that governed them.
