Divine Emperor of Death

Chapter 5263: A Protective Mother

Davis’s voice inwardly reeled with an endangered sound as he saw Evelynn smile at him sharply.

He could tell she definitely didn’t want him sending her only son to a faraway place where he could be killed or assassinated anytime. Hence, he wanted to bring this matter up to her first when she woke up and coax her, but someone had already recounted it.

Sensing someone in the room feeling jubilant about it, he turned to look at Lereza, who shrugged with a playful expression.

However, Davis’s gaze remained on her for a few more seconds, causing her to shiver and hide behind Evelynn.

”Mistress Evelynn, look at master being a bully...”

”Still a child...” Davis scoffed, causing Lereza to instantly stand up and point at Davis.

”No, you! You’re sending poor Azariel to his death!”

”...”

Davis was left speechless as he gawked. When he raised his hand to point at her, she quickly hid behind Evelynn again.

”Enough.” Evelynn uttered as she glanced at Lereza before gazing at Davis, ”Forgive her, my love. She has watched Azariel grow up and cares for him as a mother would. I would also like to know why it is my son who is being sent when you have clearly said that he wouldn’t inherit your position as the Patriarch of the Davis Family, since you would keep it for three or more generations to safeguard the lineage and preserve the founding morals.”

”...”

Davis took his hand back as he pushed into his sleeve with a fold of his arms, ”Indeed, I have also said I could keep it for an eternity, but look at our situation now. The Davis Family is on the verge of being split into Divergent and non-Divergent factions on the surface, and I can’t keep my position as the Patriarch anymore and can only trust that my children’s descendants will look well upon me instead of cursing me. As my first son, Azariel should uphold his duties of protecting the family, so I will send him to become a Realm Master and become a pillar for the family in the Upper Realms.”

Evelynn narrowed her eyes, ”I understand. However, he wasn’t even given special attention like a Crown Prince should, or the First Young Master should have, so what responsibility does he have to uphold? Forget about responsibilities since this is practically sending him to death. Even if he wins the competition, there would be so many people attempting to assassinate him. Didn’t you tell me, tell us that it would be fine as long as they grow up splendidly while not having any bad habits, so why are you throwing them, throwing my son to the front lines now?”

Davis’s brows furrowed, ”You want me to say it was my wrong or something?”

Evelynn lowered her head, her expression carrying a rare trace of alarm hidden behind an aggrieved look, ”How could you be wrong? You treated all our children equally by showering them the same love and affection and bestowing them with an equal amount of resources while catering to their cultivation needs. No average father would spend such effort and would focus on just a few promising talents. It’s just- it’s unfair to Azariel. That child has never gotten any special treatment nor unique classes from his father, nor was he able to enjoy his birthright. I fear he would not simply be up to the huge task you are demanding of him. Becoming a Realm Master is not simple, and ruling while being under the mercy of the Celestial Transcendent is entirely another.”

”...”

”...”

Ophirya Kaelis remained silent, her expression nearly turning awry amidst the tension in the atmosphere.

Should a third person like her remain here? But she had missed out on the chance to step out respectfully, and doing so now would put her in an awkward position. However, she couldn’t understand if they were treating her like family or some kind of ant to be discussing family matters in front of her.

Which was it?

Davis stared at Evelynn as though he was offended, but inwardly, he was still calm.

He couldn’t help but sigh inwardly as he saw Evelynn become distressed when it concerned her son that she became unable to see through him. Sure enough, Azariel was her precious gem. She would under no way be willing to send him off to a place where he might be dragged down and murdered in cold blood or used as a hostage to force them to do something.

He also knew Evelynn stomached Azariel not being able to enjoy his status as the Crown Prince, but had never said anything since everyone was equal, and was equal until he asked her son to endure hardship beyond his ability. Then, her grievances all came out in an instant.

’A mother is indeed unable to see their son not receive their birthright benefits. I can only imagine how Zenova would react if she birthed a son...’

Davis walked toward her and sat by her side before holding her hand gently, ”Evelynn, you know exactly why we didn’t have birthright benefits of primogeniture. If the firstborn gets treated too special, the other siblings will naturally feel a grudge towards their own and start forming factions to get even with the firstborn. We wanted to prevent this, so we formed the system of equality, treating every child the same when it came to importance and resource distribution. Even then, doesn’t your son still enjoy some benefits as the first son? Isn’t he called the First Young Master and takes charge while I’m away?”

”...” Evelynn pouted, ”That’s his own ability.”

”Haha...” Davis nodded, ”It is... but it also comes attached with the status he holds in their hearts of the family members, the inevitability of the expectations they carry for the firstborn, which also allows them to give him the first chance to prove himself and not to anyone else. Since he has proved himself capable of ruling, do you want to leave him just there, satisfied with being under me for the rest of his life, or bring him to greater heights?”

”I’m satisfied if he’s safe...” Evelynn said softly.

”...” Davis was momentarily taken aback, but he didn’t let his expression show, wanting to convince her, ”Then do you think he would be satisfied staying under me for the rest of his life?”

”...” Evelynn’s gaze quivered.

What was there to think about that? She felt no one was surpassing Davis.

But was it a good thing if the sons don’t surpass the father? Surely, they would feel protected, but at the same time, they might feel that there isn’t anything for them to do and waste their life away.

This problem hasn’t arisen yet as they were still surviving, but when they finally achieve peace, it could become a reality.

Davis chuckled, his voice a bit proud, ”Your treasured son practically pulled wool over our eyes and sneaked into the Elemental Dimension Secret Realm along with his little twin sister. Do you think he’s satisfied with the status quo? Do you think when I bring this proposition, he wouldn’t accept it?”

”...”

Evelyn looked at him tearfully, ”He would accept it, and that’s what makes me worried the most. You must stop him.”

”Evelynn, I’m the one trying to throw him there. You can’t ask me of this.”

Davis uttered, a bit dumbfounded, but Evelynn shook her head, pleading for him to not take her son away.

”You-” Davis found it troubling that she acted like this.

He guessed he could only drop this matter, but he wanted to go on one last convincing try.

”Alright, since you find this inappropriate, I’ll find someone else. When your treasured son comes finding me for answers, I’ll tell him his mother blocked me so hard that I got threatened with divorce and had no choice but to kick him from leading the non-Divergent branch.”

”You-!” Evelynn slapped his shoulder, looking unamused, ”Everyone in the harem knows that there’s only one outcome for divorcing you. Even if you don’t do anything, we will not keep silent. Who’d believe that?”

Davis chuckled fondly, ”You worry too much about your son while he has worked hard and accumulated so many merits in the Elemental Dimension and even in the family, earning the respect of many. Just believe in him. He is destined for greatness, not as great as me, but surely, a Realm Master wouldn’t be a problem for him. If you’re worried about the Celestial Transcendent, then there’s no need to be worried. Apart from our Exalt Stage allies, Clara will also help him.”

”Clara...?” Evelynn blinked.

Lereza raised her brows. She hadn’t heard of this matter.
