Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1490: Chapter 1490: Hitching a Ride with the Wind

But before he had left, Qin Jian had repeatedly emphasized that he must deliver the letter back to the military region compound personally, to the guard on duty.

This showed that Qin Jian trusted him.

He could not let down this trust.

So, he clenched his teeth and walked towards that tent.

...

Yan Ye had injected Ning Yibin with a cardiac stimulant and, looking at Ning Yibin’s weathered cheeks, he knew that he could not keep the matter hidden—it must be that Commander Ning had found out about Qin Jian’s honorable passing.

That’s why he was struck down by this sudden, unexpected news.

”How is he, Dr. Yan? Is the Commander’s heart condition serious?” Zhang Jianguo asked anxiously.

”An old problem. This time he’s been greatly shocked, which is why this has happened. After a period of rest and recuperation, if it really doesn’t improve, surgery might be the only option,” Yan Ye said.

”It’s the saddest thing for a parent to lose their child in old age. He finally found his son after more than thirty years, only to experience this disaster just as the good days were beginning,” Commissioner Liu lamented, shaking his head, ”It’s such a pity. And he was also the pride and legend of our Northern Military Region.”

Everyone present sighed deeply. Who could feel at ease after such an incident?

”I suggest that we should go back and take good care of him,” Yan Ye said, ”I’ll wrap up the work here, and then I can accompany the Commander back home.”

”That’ll work. It’ll be reassuring to have you with us on the road.”

After the earthquake had passed and the injured had been mostly rescued, most of the doctors had already returned, leaving a few to hold down the fort and handle the follow-up matters.

Ji Chuan had also left; only Yan Ye was left here. He had planned to return this morning. But that didn’t happen because, suddenly, he received news that the unit’s leadership was coming to pay a visit.

He had been concerned when he learned it was Ning Yibin, afraid that breaking the news would trigger the Commander’s heart condition, and it turned out his prediction was accurate.

Indeed, Commander Ning had had an attack and had fainted right there in the tent.

Yan Ye packed up the things that needed to be stored and took the things that needed to be taken; he knew he’d surely have to come back here after the New Year.

At this moment, Ning Yibin was slowly waking up. Yan Ye said, ”Let’s go. We can head back now.”

Lin Sheng had been crouching outside the tent for a long time, making up a hundred reasons in his mind, trying to decide which was the most reasonable. Eventually, as everyone came out, he rushed up and said, ”Could I catch a ride to the city? I just got back from out of town yesterday and heard my dad was taken to the hospital.”

”Get on. Follow the vehicle.” Surprisingly, the response came way too readily.

Lin Sheng followed the man who had spoken onto the vehicle and sneakily glanced at him before saying, ”I need to go to Nancheng City...”

”We’re all headed to Nancheng. Let me know which hospital you need once we get there, and I’ll drop you off.”

”No need, no need,” Lin Sheng hastily refused, waving his hand, ”I’ll just go by myself. No need to trouble you.”

”That’s fine.”

”Thank you, thank you. My name is Lin Sheng. May I ask your honorable surname?”

”Yan Ye.”

This was Lin Sheng’s first time in a military vehicle, and he was very excited.

He touched here and there, wanting to express his excitement, but when he turned his head and saw Yan Ye’s stern face, he immediately swallowed back whatever he had been about to say.
