Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1466: Chapter 1466: He Is Also a Human Being

Zhang Jianguo didn’t speak. It was only after he had slowly smoked an entire cigarette that he finally began to speak, ”Qin Jian has been glorified.”

”What?” Zhang Lanxiang suddenly froze, ”What did you say? Glorified? What does that mean?”

”Do you not know what ’being glorified’ means?” Zhang Jianguo stared with bloodshot eyes at Zhang Lanxiang, ”Being glorified means sacrificed, it means the thing you’re afraid of in your heart.”

”How could this be possible? How could this be?” Zhang Lanxiang became agitated; she couldn’t believe it no matter what, ”Old Zhang, how could Qin Jian be glorified? How could he?”

”Why couldn’t he? He was a human being, a flesh and blood human being!” Tears slowly streamed down Zhang Jianguo’s cheeks.

Zhang Lanxiang collapsed onto the chair with a thud, looking completely soulless.

She had known Qin Jian for so many years; he was like a brother to her, like family. All of a sudden, to say that Qin Jian was gone, she could not accept this cruel reality.

The tears just flowed so effortlessly. Unable to hold back any longer, Zhang Lanxiang covered her mouth with her hands and began to sob.

”There, there,” Zhang Jianguo gently embraced his wife, raising a hand to wipe the tears from her face, ”I know your heart is also in pain. But right now, instead of grieving, there’s something much more difficult to handle, and I think I need your help.”

Zhang Lanxiang looked at him through tear-filled eyes.

”The Commander’s family has yet to hear this news. When I was coming back, I made sure to instruct everyone not to let the news leak out...”

Zhang Jianguo said.

”But... the Commander’s family is going to find out sooner or later. You can’t wrap fire in paper.”

”I know. But as you know, the Commander’s health isn’t good. If he finds out his only son has had an accident, do you think he can handle it? Therefore, we have to break the news to him gradually. We thought it over for a long time and decided we should tell An Hao first, to prepare her emotionally. Then, she can gradually break it to the Commander...”

”That’s too cruel for An Hao... and the child who’s just over two months old...” Zhang Lanxiang choked up, her vision blurred by tears, ”Why must this cruel task be mine?”

”You are the most suitable person for it. Go on, wife. Only you can convey this to An Hao.” Zhang Jianguo said, looking at her.

”Okay. Alright...” Zhang Lanxiang agreed.

......................

The snow had finally stopped, and the sun had peeked out.

The military compound was decked out in overwhelming whiteness, a world cloaked in silver. An Hao, holding Little Chenyang, looked through the window at the soldiers busy clearing snow outside, but her mind was on her husband, Qin Jian.

The years had passed by so quickly, one after another.

After this heavy snowfall, the New Year would soon be upon them.

She wondered how the disaster area was doing now.

She heard that even though the magnitude of the earthquake was quite high, there weren’t any buildings left on the ground, so there was no issue of collapsed houses this time, as everyone was sleeping in tents; the casualties were not severe.

The post-disaster reconstruction was about to begin, and the advance troops who had gone for earthquake relief should be coming home soon.

She was going to see her husband very soon.

”An Hao! An Hao! Come down quickly! Look who’s come to see you!” Zhang Yun’s voice came from downstairs.
