Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1476: Chapter 1476: Not a command, but it cannot be ignored.

After the two agreed, An Hao informed her in-laws, and then she and Gu Shuangshuang’s companion set off for Lai City.

The road was rugged and difficult, winding through the mountains.

When the car arrived at the foot of the village, An Hao insisted that the security guard not drive them any further.

She and Gu Shuangshuang decided to walk in.

Along the way, they encountered many villagers, and after asking around, An Hao and Gu Shuangshuang finally arrived at the military camp where the troops were stationed.

From afar, they saw the green tents, and soldiers in uniforms busily moving in and out.

Unfortunately, among the tents, there was no sign of Qin Jian or Tian Niu.

Gu Shuangshuang stopped in her tracks.

Her emotions had already been poor throughout the journey, and she wanted to cry, but she forced a smile because she was afraid the security guard might become suspicious.

Now, seeing the group of soldiers, her tears could no longer be held back.

She no longer had the courage to take another step forward.

”Let’s go,” An Hao said without offering comfort, merely stating, ”What has to be faced, must be faced.”

Gu Shuangshuang tightly gripped An Hao’s hand as if to transmit some strength of emotion between them, and the two headed toward the military base without saying a word.

Some soldiers recognized An Hao.

They stopped their busy footsteps and saluted her solemnly, ”Sister-in-law...”

Each ”Sister-in-law” was like a knife cutting into An Hao’s heart, leaving her feeling immensely sad. She bravely fought back the bleak emotions and tears, nodding to the young soldiers.

Many soldiers from the third battalion had attended Gu Shuangshuang’s wedding. Seeing the commander’s wife with tear-rimmed eyes made them deeply sympathize and feel sorry for the commander.

The disturbance caused by the soldiers outside drew Vice Commander Hen Zhiyuan and a few battalion commanders out of a tent meeting.

The meeting was temporarily stopped.

Just as Hen Zhiyuan was about to step out to see what was happening outside, he saw that An Hao had already lifted the tent flap and entered.

Upon seeing both An Hao and Gu Shuangshuang, all the soldiers fell silent.

The atmosphere in the air was dangerously quiet.

It was Hen Zhiyuan who spoke first, ”Sister-in-law... you’re here...”

An Hao’s gaze fell on Hen Zhiyuan’s face and she slowly said, ”I came to see where Qin Jian fell.”

”This...” Hen Zhiyuan didn’t expect An Hao to speak so bluntly, which put him in a difficult position. Honestly, he didn’t have the courage to visit that place a second time.

These days, every time he neared that spot, he recalled the moment he let go and saw Qin Jian falling, especially his shocked and angry expression, which Hen Zhiyuan couldn’t forget.

”Sister-in-law, considering how far you’ve come, and with it being cold and the roads slippery, why don’t you have some hot water and rest for a bit first,” Hen Zhiyuan suggested.

”No. I want to go there now. Please take me there, Vice Commander Hen,” An Hao said, her face expressionless and her tone calm, yet firm.

This was not a command, but it left no room for refusal.

”Alright. But, sister-in-law, please make sure you don’t feel too sad afterward,” Hen Zhiyuan said, then lifted the flap of the tent and led An Hao towards the site of the accident.

The path was uneven and filled with hardships; there was a distance from the camp to the foot of the mountain, and the wind blowing coldly against their faces felt like knives. Qin Jian persevered in such harsh conditions day after day.

”Sister-in-law, we’re almost there,” Hen Zhiyuan pointed to the spot where Qin Jian had fallen, then looked back at An Hao, ”Are you sure you’re all right?”
