The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1029: Chapter 1029: Lanhua’s Decision

Madam Li was seething inside. She couldn’t go to Daniu, so she could only turn to Zhou Qiao.

As the daughter-in-law of the Lu family, Zhou Qiao naturally had to help out after meals.

She had just finished washing the dishes and wiped her hands when she saw her mother-in-law walking toward her.

Seeing Madam Li’s unpleasant expression, Zhou Qiao’s heart sank. She knew the matter she’d been avoiding would finally have to be addressed. Quietly, she let out a sigh.

Madam Li walked up to Zhou Qiao, glared at her, and lowered her voice, ”Come with me. I have something to ask you.”

Zhou Qiao pressed her lips together and bowed her head as she walked out of the kitchen.

Madam Li originally intended to bring Zhou Qiao to her room to talk, but the old lady and others were there, and Daniu’s room also had people inside. Lanhua’s boudoir, however, was empty.

So she led Zhou Qiao across the living room and headed straight toward Lanhua’s room.

Who would have thought the door was half-open? Just as Madam Li was about to push it open, she heard Lanhua exclaiming from inside, ”...Really? Sister Daya, you’re really letting me go to the shop to learn how to do makeup?”

Madam Li’s hand paused slightly, quickly pulling back as she leaned in to listen to the movements inside.

Zhou Qiao was slightly surprised as well.

The voice inside sounded again—it was Shuyou.

”It’s true. Aren’t you interested in dressing up? In the past, our family didn’t have any makeup products, so even if you wanted to, there was no way to practice. Now the shop specializes in this. Wouldn’t it be a pity if you missed the chance?”

Lanhua’s cheeks flushed with excitement. She grabbed Shuyou’s hand and stammered, ”But... but I really like it, even though I don’t know how. I don’t understand it at all. The last time I watched you do someone’s makeup, my eyes were spinning from confusion.”

”That’s why, when you first start, you’ll have to learn. In the beginning, when you don’t know how, customers surely won’t request you. You’ll just assist, observe, and learn gradually. Because of that, the wages won’t be very high. If you mind that...”

Before Shuyou could finish, Lanhua quickly shook her head, ”I don’t mind! Why would I mind? I’d be thrilled just to learn these things. I don’t need wages at all; isn’t this the same as being an apprentice? Apprentices don’t expect pay, you know. Look at how Second Uncle learned woodcraft as an apprentice before—he wasn’t paid either.”

Shuyou laughed, ”Since you’re willing, then prepare yourself over the next couple of days and pack your things to head to the county town. But let me make something clear in advance: the shop has its rules. If you don’t do well, even though you’re my sister, I won’t hesitate to call you out on it.”

”No problem! If I mess up, you can say whatever you like.”

The two exchanged a smile and prepared to leave the room.

Upon hearing the footsteps, Madam Li quickly pulled Zhou Qiao toward the courtyard outside.

After walking out of the living room, she sighed with a complicated expression.

What could she say now? Even though she knew that the manor Daniu had gone to wasn’t good, she couldn’t possibly let him return to the county town to be a shopkeeper again, could she?

Someone had already arranged work for Lanhua. If she expressed dissatisfaction now, wouldn’t she drown in a sea of criticism?

Besides, when you really think about it, women have it harder than men. Lanhua isn’t married yet, and having a livelihood means that even after she marries, she’ll have a trade to fall back on, right? When she goes to her husband’s household, she won’t have to suffer.

If she stirs up any more trouble, it’ll anger Yu. Not only might Daniu lose his job, but even Lanhua could get sent back home.

Madam Li let out another heavy sigh. Zhou Qiao spoke softly, ”Mother, what do you want to say to me?”
