The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1024: Chapter 1024: Start Preparing for the Engagement

Madam Ruan laughed and said, ”Yes, Miss Tian is skilled in embroidery. If she wanted to join an embroidery workshop in the prefecture, she could easily get in. But Miss Tian’s mother has fallen ill, and they’ve seen many doctors, none of whom could cure her.”

Shuyu suddenly understood, ”Was it Zhao Xi who treated her mother?”

”Exactly. Miss Tian is deeply grateful, and since her mother’s illness hasn’t fully recovered, she asked us if we needed an embroiderer. She followed us back to Jiangyuan County and became the embroiderer for our shop. Her only request was to bring her mother along. Just now, her mother was in the mule carriage behind us.”

The old lady was delighted, ”This trip really wouldn’t have turned out so well without Zhao Xi accompanying you. That young man is quite capable.”

Madam Ruan’s face showed a trace of pride. Indeed, normally he might seem like a carefree and unserious fellow, but who would have thought that when things got serious, he’d prove to be extraordinarily competent?

The most important thing was that he protected Shuyou and wouldn’t let her suffer even the slightest grievance.

Such a man was destined to be her son-in-law—how could Madam Ruan not feel proud?

But when talking about Zhao Xi, the old lady’s expression grew stern. ”Erbai, Ruan, this time Zhao Xi traveled with Ah You. I’m sure you understand what this means. Since the two of them clearly have mutual feelings, you should go ahead and arrange their engagement. That way, we can avoid gossip.”

It would also prevent many people from trying to play matchmaker.

Especially since the matchmaking targets were not only Shuyu and her sisters but also Zhao Xi and Meng Yunzheng.

Previously, Zhao Xi was a fool, and Meng Yunzheng was mute. The fellow townsfolk only viewed them with pity, never thinking to introduce potential brides.

But now, everything had changed. Both men had recovered.

Not to mention that both of them were strikingly handsome and highly accomplished. We’ll set Meng Yunzheng aside for now, but Zhao Xi—he’s a doctor. A young doctor, already so skilled in medicine; what woman wouldn’t feel secure marrying him?

And yet, both of them lacked immediate elders by their side. The closest ones they had were the Lu family.

This led to the neighbors coming to the old lady one after another, asking about the Meng family and Zhao family, hoping she could inquire on their behalf.

The old lady was nearly exasperated to the point of coughing blood. A bunch of them were eyeing her future sons-in-law—what was there to inquire about? What was there to ask??!!

This had her wishing she could hide in Yiren Pavilion every day, avoiding home entirely. Otherwise, the courtyard gate simply wouldn’t get a moment’s peace.

Now that they were sure of Ah You’s feelings, they should start with the engagement.

Lu Erbai nodded, ”Alright, I’ll find a time to talk to Zhao Xi. Even though he no longer has parents, his master is still around, so we’d need to seek Old Doctor Zhao’s opinion.”

Just as Zhao Xi and Shuyou were returning, they happened to overhear this remark.

”Ask my master about what?” Zhao Xi asked enthusiastically. ”Is it about Ah Ning apprenticing?”

”No, it’s about you and my sister,” Shuyu replied with a playful smile.

Zhao Xi froze for a moment. And then his eyes lit up. Unable to contain his joy, he rushed forward excitedly, ”Grandmother, Uncle Lu, Aunt Lu, is this about my and Ah You’s wedding? My master has no objection! I already wrote to him long ago, and he responded. Wait right here—I’ll go home and fetch the letter to show you.”

With that, he dashed off.

The Lu family exchanged puzzled glances, eventually all turning to Shuyou.

The latter was stunned for a moment, then her face flushed bright red. Unable to say a single word, she turned and retreated to her room.

Zhao Xi returned quickly, holding a thick envelope in his hand.

He handed the letter directly to Lu Erbai, who hesitated, ”This... your master’s letter to you—should I really be reading it?”
