This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Colleague? Classmate?

Du Heng finally knew where these things came from.

But Du Heng hesitated. If he took these items back and there happened to be gifts from colleagues, even though people wouldn’t overthink it, there would still be some embarrassment.

After thinking about it, Du Heng decided that even if he were to take them back, he couldn’t do it now. He had to wait until Wu Shengnan was discharged from the hospital, then take them back to share with everyone. That way, he would have a good excuse.

Having shared his thoughts, Du Heng took the Sir and his brother-in-law home. However, his brother-in-law mentioned he had friends in the Capital. Since it was a rare visit, he decided to go and catch up with them. And so, before they even reached home, only Du Heng and the Sir remained.

The nanny they had hired had already started working. She was currently preparing dinner for Wu Shengnan and Zhang Sumei. Seeing Du Heng and the Sir return, she also cooked a couple of dishes for them. Then, she took the packed meals and hurried to the hospital.

Du Heng and the Sir enjoyed a comfortable meal at home. Du Heng wanted to arrange for the Sir to rest, but the Sir called him over instead.

”Xiao Heng, do you remember Director Su Nan?” the Sir asked as soon as he settled down.

Hearing the name ’Su Nan,’ Du Heng suddenly felt that it was very familiar, as if he had heard it somewhere before.

It took him a long time to remember that when he was chatting with Principal Wang Pan, they had talked about this person—a doctor from the Military Hospital.

But it still wasn’t right. He seemed to have an impression of this name from even earlier, but for a moment, he just couldn’t recall from where.

Sir Wu Zhong saw the confusion on Du Heng’s face and gently reminded him, ”Do you remember the time when you treated me? There were two people when you came—one was your current teacher, Li Jianwei, and the other was Director Su Nan.”

Du Heng had a flash of understanding. With this reminder, he immediately remembered.

This Director Su Nan had competed with Li Jianwei to take him as a student at the time.

”I remember now! Director Su Nan, the expert in Traditional Chinese Medicine Cardiopulmonary,” Du Heng slapped his forehead and said. ”Why did you suddenly mention him?”

Sir Wu Zhong suddenly sighed. ”Ah, Director Su. He taught students all his life, treated diseases all his life, and researched cardiopulmonary all his life. And now, he himself has fallen victim to heart disease.”

Du Heng was startled, his mind struggling to process the information. ”Did he pass away?”

The Sir shook his head. ”No.”

”Oh,” Du Heng breathed a sigh of relief. ”So he’s alright now?”

The Sir still shook his head. ”Sigh, I went to visit him the day before yesterday morning. He was wearing an oxygen mask and couldn’t speak. He was so swollen he didn’t look like himself. His family said the conditions in Jinzhou weren’t good, so they wanted to transfer him to the Capital.”

Du Heng pursed his lips. Transferring to the Capital… this situation sounds grim.

The Sir sighed and said, ”In our usual chats, Director Su always asks about you and is very concerned about your affairs. Since he’s come to the Capital now, I thought that if you have time, you should go see him.”

Thinking of Director Su Nan’s high regard for him, Du Heng readily agreed to the Sir’s proposal. ”I should indeed visit him. However, I don’t have Director Su’s contact information. Grandfather, could you help me contact him and ask which hospital he is in and whether it’s convenient to visit?”

Sir Wu Zhong nodded and immediately pulled out his phone to make the call.

After a while on the phone, he put it down and said to Du Heng, ”He was transferred to the Capital yesterday. He’s in the First Medical Center of the General Hospital.”

Du Heng nodded immediately. ”That’s not far. I’ll go see him after I’m done with my work tomorrow morning. By the way, Grandfather, are you very close to Director Su?”

Sir Wu Zhong shook his head again. ”We weren’t close before. But after Director Su Nan treated me, we got in touch. Over the past two years or so, we’ve become friends. He didn’t reply to my messages a few days ago, so I asked. His family told me he had fallen ill; that’s how I found out.”

With that, the Sir’s face turned worried. He looked up at Du Heng and said, ”Don’t wait for tomorrow. It would be best to visit him tonight.”

”Go tonight? Isn’t that a bit inappropriate? Will it disturb Director Su’s rest?” Du Heng asked hesitantly.

”Go. His family just said Director Su Nan’s condition is very bad. Since arriving in the Capital yesterday, he has been unconscious and hasn’t left the ICU.” The Sir sighed heavily again, paused for a moment, then suddenly changed his mind. ”Forget it, I’ll go with you. It might be our last chance to see him.”

At this, Du Heng no longer hesitated. He didn’t mention visiting tomorrow again, nor did he try to stop the Sir from going.

The Sir was right. Deeply unconscious and still in the ICU, each visit might indeed be the last.

Thinking back to meeting Su Nan two years ago, and then to just a few days ago when it was said Su Nan would be a candidate for an academician position at the Chinese Medicine Hospital next year, Du Heng felt a pang in his heart.

However, there was one problem now: would they even be able to see Director Su Nan when they arrived?

On the way to the First Medical Center, Du Heng silently mulled over all possible options. Unfortunately, he didn’t know anyone at the First Medical Center and couldn’t think of any connections he could use at the moment.

”Grandpa Wu, you’re here.” At the entrance of the ICU, a teary-eyed young woman greeted Sir Wu Zhong. She was accompanied by three men of varying ages.

Wu Zhong sighed softly. ”Xiaoyuan, how is your father doing?”

”Still the same. He’s still unconscious, and his whole body has swollen a lot.”

Wu Zhong fell silent for a moment, then pointed to Du Heng and said, ”Xiaoyuan, this is Du Heng. He’s a young man Director Su Nan thought very highly of back in Jinzhou. When he heard about Director Su Nan’s condition, he insisted on coming to visit.” Sir Wu Zhong then turned to Du Heng. ”Xiao Heng, this is Director Su Nan’s daughter, Su Yuan. She’s also a doctor at the Jinzhou Military General Hospital.”

Su Yuan looked at Du Heng and said gently, ”Hello, President Du. I know you.”

President Du? Such a strange yet familiar title.

Du Heng reached out and shook Su Yuan’s hand.

Su Yuan then added, ”I’ve heard of your achievements in Jinzhou. And my father often spoke of you. He said he regretted not having you as his student.”

Hearing this, Du Heng felt an indescribable mix of emotions. For a moment, he didn’t know what to say.

At this time, Sir Wu Zhong interjected, ”Alright, you young people will have plenty of opportunities to talk later. You can chat then. For now, can we go in to see your father?”

Su Yuan shook her head. ”I’m afraid not. I can only go in for ten minutes each day.”

”Well then…” The Sir looked somewhat disappointed, turning to Du Heng, hoping he could think of something.

Du Heng also felt powerless. Just as he was about to say something, the door to the ICU opened.

Then, two middle-aged men emerged, accompanying an elderly man who walked out slowly. The three of them looked grave.

When Su Yuan saw these three, she immediately walked over and asked anxiously, ”Director Xue...”

The man called Director Xue glanced at Su Yuan, then at Du Heng and Wu Zhong, before saying to Su Yuan, ”The situation is very bad. You need to be mentally prepared.”

”Ah~~~” Su Yuan’s eyes became vacant, and her body slowly retreated two steps.

Just as Du Heng was about to reach out and support Su Yuan, one of the men beside her had already steadied her.

Seeing this, Du Heng didn’t extend his hand further. Instead, he turned to look at the old man leading the group. He felt the man looked familiar, as if he had seen him somewhere before.

After thinking for a good while, just as the old man was passing him, Du Heng suddenly called out, ”Academician Sun.”

Du Heng remembered. This old man was Academician Sun Jiaxiang. He had seen his photo in the school’s promotional brochure.

He felt the man looked familiar because he had only seen his photo, which was why he couldn’t immediately recall who he was.
