This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

As soon as Du Heng removed his surgical gown and gloves, he felt his breathing become lighter, and a sense of relief washed over him.

”Head downward position?” Du Heng chuckled. ”Do you think that in this situation, changing to a head downward position would allow the mother to deliver on her own?”

What does he mean? Dr. Zhang’s eyes moved between Du Heng and the woman in childbirth.

At this moment, Director Su’s face flushed; his subordinate was being rather embarrassing.

He dared not let Dr. Zhang question Du Heng any further, so he said directly, ”The mother has been anesthetized and cannot deliver on her own. Adjusting to a head downward position at this point is useless. To deliver smoothly, external force is necessary. As for how to apply external force, you saw the situation just now. Are we supposed to pull on the fetus’s head? So, at this time, using the breech position is the most appropriate. By pulling the baby out by its feet and legs, we can reduce many risk factors.”

Du Heng wanted to laugh, but his mouth was so tense that even a slight exertion of force felt like it would tear the skin around his lips. It hurt too much.

Pursing his lips, Du Heng said helplessly, ”Director Su, please examine the mother and make sure there are no remaining injuries.”

”Okay.” Director Su looked at the loudly crying baby in the nurse’s hands and then at the mother, whose vital signs were stable, on the delivery bed. At this point, he didn’t know how to describe Du Heng anymore.

He had only brought Du Heng to the delivery room by chance and to save a little time in finding a doctor for a consultation.

But he never expected that Deputy Director Du Heng was not only an expert in the Internal Medicine Department but also a hidden master of obstetrics.

Leaving aside everything else, just his skilled application of the combined version and breech traction techniques today demonstrated that Du Heng could handle virtually any delivery—say, ninety-nine percent of them—without difficulty.

He seems more like the Director of the Obstetrics Department than I do, Director Su thought. Especially now, with the Obstetrics Department’s guiding principle of promoting natural birth and avoiding C-sections unless absolutely necessary, Du Heng truly seems more suited to be the Director of Obstetrics than I am.

At this moment, Du Heng didn’t care what others thought. He just wanted to hurry back to Wu Shengnan’s side, see his wife, and see his daughter.

His heart ached with anticipation, and he was so anxious he could hardly stand it.

After cleaning up, Du Heng bade farewell to Director Su.

Director Su wanted to be polite and began to speak with a smile, but when he saw the shiny blisters around Du Heng’s mouth, he stuttered.

”Director Du... Director Du... what’s wrong... are you alright?” Director Su asked, as he touched his own lips, as if they had suddenly become uncomfortable as well.

Du Heng pursed his lips in a bitter smile. ”It’s fine, it’s an old problem. Whenever I enter the delivery room or a confinement room, blisters appear around my mouth.”

Director Su was surprised at first, then burst out laughing, incredibly amused.

He hadn’t expected that the expert who had just solved such a huge problem for him also had his own peculiar sufferings that ordinary people wouldn’t experience.

”Director Du, your shoulder’s fire qi is weak. You should replenish it.”

”Director Su, you know about this too?”

”I dabble in the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, but I haven’t quite hit the mark with it yet.” Saying this, Director Su chuckled.

Du Heng wanted to laugh too, but the tightness around his mouth made him suppress it.

After saying goodbye to Director Su, Du Heng left the delivery room and took the elevator to the Obstetrics Department ward.

Upon entering the elevator, the cold air coming from the elevator shaft made Du Heng shiver involuntarily.

That shiver cleared his excited mind for a moment. He suddenly realized that his back was already soaked in sweat from the earlier operation. Now that the wind from the elevator shaft was blowing on him, he instantly felt a chill.

Fortunately, the delivery room and the Obstetrics Department were just two floors apart, and he quickly reached the Obstetrics Department hallway, feeling slightly warmer.

”Slow down, the baby and Nannan are both asleep. Don’t wake them up.” As soon as Du Heng pushed open the door to the hospital room, Zhang Sumei, who was by the baby’s crib, hushed him.

Du Heng obediently nodded, tiptoed to his daughter’s side, glanced at her, and then went to Wu Shengnan’s side.

Looking at Wu Shengnan’s sleeping but clearly exhausted face, Du Heng couldn’t help but kiss her forehead and whisper, ”Honey, you’ve worked hard.”

Then, Du Heng tiptoed back to his daughter’s bed.

Although they had only been apart for a short time, the wrinkles on the baby’s face had already faded considerably. However, her skin still looked dark.

But no matter how dark, Du Heng loved her, and the more he looked at her, the more he loved her. He leaned in to kiss her.

But before his lips could touch the baby, Zhang Sumei pushed his face away. ”Look at your mouth, it’s disgusting! Stay away from the baby. Who knows what germs are on there, and you’re trying to kiss her.”

Pushing him away wasn’t enough, nor was scolding him. Zhang Sumei stood directly between Du Heng and the baby, then glared at him fiercely.

It was clear that Zhang Sumei was utterly disgusted by the blisters around Du Heng’s mouth.

Du Heng foolishly grinned a few times before lying down on the sofa. ”Alright, alright, I’ll keep my distance.”

”That’s better.” Zhang Sumei turned, tucked the blanket around the baby, and then said, ”Xiao Heng, does your hospital have any larger rooms?”

Du Heng looked back at the single room and asked in confusion, ”Sister-in-law, all the single rooms here are like this. Is this one still too small?”

Zhang Sumei clicked her tongue. ”It’s not that it’s too small; I’m just worried that when your father-in-law and his family come today, it’ll be too cramped for everyone to move around with us and the nanny here.”

Du Heng shook his head. ”Sister-in-law, don’t worry so much. Not many people from my father-in-law’s side will come, probably just my mother-in-law.”

”Then your eldest brother-in-law and his wife aren’t coming?”

”They probably won’t be able to come.” Du Heng shook his head with certainty. ”My eldest brother-in-law’s wife is also due in a few days, so they daren’t travel.”

Zhang Sumei sighed with relief. What she dreaded most was Wu Shengnan’s family all gathering together. The difference in their social standing was too great; it always made her feel awkward and uncomfortable.

”Alright, you’ve been busy all night. Get some sleep. You have to go to work in the morning.”

”No need, my office is right here on the seventh floor.” Du Heng paused slightly. ”Hmm, I’ll have to switch shifts with Director Wu today. He can cover the outpatient service; I won’t go.”

He muttered about not needing sleep, but after a short while, Du Heng felt his mind grow heavy, and soon he drifted off.

As he slept, his breathing grew heavier, and his sleeping body would occasionally tremble.
