This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

”Mom has a fear of heights, so she never takes a plane anywhere; she always goes by train or car.

Since my wife is here, Mom feels at ease and won’t have to bother traveling back and forth. I’ll bring her for a visit when the baby is one month old.”

Du Heng shook his head. ”I’m fine. I’m just worried Nannan might overthink things.”

Wu Shengnan’s older brother glanced at her on the bed and said with a chuckle, ”Don’t worry, a girl from our Wu family isn’t that petty.

This morning, Mom and Dad already had a video call with her. Everything’s fine.”

Du Heng nodded and looked back at Wu Shengnan.

Seeing Wu Shengnan also looking at him, Du Heng felt a warmth spread through his heart. He smiled and walked over, and the two gently embraced. ”This has been hard on you, honey.”

Wu Shengnan hugged Du Heng tightly but then suddenly pushed him away, a look of disgust on her face. ”Why do you reek of stale sweat? It’s awful!

I’m warning you, don’t go near my daughter. You’ll stink her up.”

Du Heng looked at Wu Shengnan, speechless.

But Wu Shengnan giggled and then asked, ”By the way, honey, have you thought of a name for our daughter?

You were agonizing over it before, and now that she’s born, you’re not still agonizing, are you?”

Du Heng let out a soft sigh and turned to look at the fast-asleep little baby. ”Let’s call her Du Xuan.”

Wu Shengnan hurriedly asked, ”Which Xuan?”

”The ’Xuan’ from ’day lily.’ It’s the character ’xuan’ as in ’to proclaim,’ with the grass radical on top.”

”UGH, what kind of name is that? Day lily? It just sounds bad.” Wu Shengnan pouted, unhappy. ”Change it. Change it now! If you can’t think of one, use mine: Du Zi...”

Du Heng hurriedly interrupted her, ”Hold on. We’re not using your suggestions. No matter what ’Zichen’ name you’re thinking of, it’s not happening.”

”But ’day lily’... it’s just so... you know.”

”Don’t be so quick to judge; let me finish,” Du Heng said with a smile. ”The ’Xuan’ is from ’xuancao’—day lily. It’s another name for the common day lily, the one we also call ’huanghuacai’.”

Wu Shengnan immediately frowned. ”HUH? The common day lily? What kind of association is that? No, definitely not.”

”I told you, don’t rush. Let me finish,” Du Heng said softly. ”Day lily. Do you know what it symbolizes in our history?”

Wu Shengnan pursed her lips. ”What?”

Du Heng chuckled, then sat up a little straighter. ”In the poem ’Impromptu’ by the Yuan Dynasty poet Wang Mian, it says: ’Today the wind and sun are fair, daylily flowers bloom before the hall. Holding a cup to toast Mother’s longevity, the true joy is in the tranquil celebration.’

”Su Dongpo also wrote these lines: ’Though the daylily is a humble flower, its solitary beauty helps it stand apart. Gracefully, amidst a tangle of leaves, each one offers its fragrant heart.’

”Here, the ’fragrant heart’ symbolizes a mother’s love.

”Many famous poems use the daylily to express this same idea: to forever love your mother, and to praise the profoundness of maternal love and the figure of the loving mother.

”That’s the symbolism of the daylily.”

When Wu Shengnan heard it expressed maternal love and was featured in so many famous poems, she suddenly felt the character ’Xuan’ itself was becoming quite profound and endearing.

Du Heng merely smiled faintly and continued, ”Do you know of Dong Biwu?”

Wu Shengnan shot Du Heng a look. ”Of course, I do! Just get on with it, no more beating around the bush.”

”The esteemed Mr. Dong wrote a poem: ’You gift me a smiling magnolia, I offer in return the forget worries grass. Worry not for our children’s matters, may we always laugh together as we grow old.’” Du Heng paused here, deliberately building suspense.

Wu Shengnan, falling for his tactic, immediately pressed, ”Why are you bringing up this poem?”

”Do you know what the forget worries grass in this poem refers to?” Du Heng asked with a smile.

Wu Shengnan hesitated. ”Forget worries grass is just... forget worries grass, right? What else could it be?”

Du Heng gently waved his hand. ”This ’forget worries grass’ actually refers to the daylily; it’s another name for it. It represents the kind of forgetting that love can bring about—specifically, ’to forget all unpleasant things,’ to let go of one’s troubles.”

As Du Heng spoke, he turned to look at the little baby. ”So, Du Xuan can also be called Du Wangyou (forget worries). I hope she always remembers your greatness as her mother, and I also hope she lives her entire life free from worries, always happy and joyful.”
