This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Du Heng felt like he was dazed from sleep, that he was hearing things. He picked up his mobile phone to check the incoming call message.

As he saw the bright words ”Wife” on it, his heart lurched. ”Honey, slow down, what happened?”

Wu Shengnan’s voice on the other side was trembling, ”Husband, I think I’m going into labor, my water broke.”

He drew a sharp breath.

This was precisely what he had feared.

He had thought before bed that she shouldn’t get too tired, or problems would arise, and now they really had...

Thirty days premature, this...

Du Heng was instantly overcome with anxiety. But as a man, and as a Doctor, he could still control his emotions and tried to speak calmly, ”Is there anyone with you?”

”Yes, the colleague who was looking up Materials with me is also in the Dormitory.”

”Please ask her for help and let her look after you. Also, call 120 immediately. Tell them your address and have them pick you up. I’ll wait for you at the Hospital.”

Before Du Heng could finish speaking, Wu Shengnan’s painful groans came through the phone. They lasted for about a minute before she finally managed to catch her breath.

Du Heng was extremely anxious but, for the moment, helpless.

Thankfully, at this time, the concerned voice of Wu Shengnan’s colleague and the sound of someone else making a call could also be heard over the phone, which slightly eased Du Heng’s anxiety.

Du Heng didn’t dare to hang up. He continued to comfort Wu Shengnan while reminding her of some precautions.

As a former Dean of the Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital, he was familiar with the childbirth process.

Moreover, he had personally overseen Wu Shengnan’s entire pregnancy, so no dangerous situations should have arisen. But this was his Wife and Child, after all; it was impossible to remain calm.

He rambled on about one precaution for a long time, repeating it several times.

Hastily, Du Heng threw on his clothes and shoes and immediately knocked on his Sister-in-law’s door. ”Sister-in-law, Nannan is about to give birth!”

”What happened?” Zhang Sumei, instantly startled awake, asked as soon as Du Heng finished speaking.

Du Heng had no time to explain, saying hurriedly, ”She must have overtired herself these past few days and not rested well. Sister-in-law...”

”Enough with the ’Sister-in-law, Sister-in-law’! The things for the birth are in the big cabinet above the doorway. Get them down quickly. I’ll be out as soon as I’m dressed.” Zhang Sumei immediately began ordering Du Heng around.

At this moment, she had completely forgotten that her little brother-in-law was a doctor.

The two of them gathered the things and headed straight for the Hospital.

Upon arrival, Du Heng went straight to the Obstetrics Department, hoping to make arrangements in advance.

But just as he found an Obstetrician and before he could say anything, the Ambulance carrying Wu Shengnan arrived.

During the subsequent check-up, although he was also an expert in this field, as a family member, he could only watch as other doctors busied themselves. He focused on comforting Wu Shengnan and trying to ease her anxiety.

”Dr. Zhang, how’s my lover...” Du Heng asked impatiently as soon as the Obstetrician finished the examination.

The doctor on duty quickly explained, ”Director Du, your lover’s cervix is already open; she’s definitely going into labor now. But it’s almost a month early, and I’m worried the baby’s respiratory system and cardiopulmonary system aren’t fully developed, so we need to administer some medicine.”

”Have your lover try to hold on for a bit, delay things slightly. That way, once the medicine takes effect, it will benefit the baby’s respiratory system and cardiopulmonary function.”

Du Heng knew this. Even if Dr. Zhang hadn’t said so, he would have requested that the medicine be administered.

After Dr. Zhang left to attend to other matters, Du Heng and his Sister-in-law stayed by Wu Shengnan’s bedside.

Before Du Heng could even express his concern for Wu Shengnan, his Sister-in-law pushed him. ”What are you hovering around for? Hurry up and call Nannan’s parents and inform the Old man.”

Du Heng could only reply, ”Oh, oh, oh.”

Usually, these were the kinds of things he told others, but now that it was happening to him, he also felt lost and helpless.

After notifying everyone one by one, Du Heng finally returned to Wu Shengnan’s side. He comforted her, trying to calm his own nerves as well.

They arrived at the Hospital at 12:30 AM. Medicine was administered at 12:45 AM. By 3:00 AM, Wu Shengnan’s cervix was fully dilated. She couldn’t hold on any longer and was wheeled directly into the delivery room.

The moment Du Heng, who had just started to calm down, saw his Wife being wheeled into the delivery room, his heart clenched again. Even his calf muscles began to cramp, making him a bit unsteady on his feet.

His Sister-in-law, Zhang Sumei, was in no better state. She was pressed against the crack of the door, unable to see anything clearly, yet peering intently as if she could.

When she turned around and saw Du Heng standing dazed behind her, Zhang Sumei couldn’t help but lose her temper. ”Just look at you! You’re a doctor, and yet your Wife is delivering prematurely! What kind of doctor are you?”

Losing her temper, Zhang Sumei punched Du Heng. ”This is what you get for not coming home, for not picking up your Wife! She’s pregnant, and you still had her going to work! Are you that desperate for the pittance Nannan earns? I’m telling you, if anything happens to the Child or Nannan, either one of them, I’ll have your brother beat you to death!”

After saying this, Zhang Sumei quickly spat three times, then clasped her hands together and began murmuring prayers for protection, apologizing for her ill-omened words.

Du Heng was both anxious and helpless. Did he dare to talk back? No, he didn’t dare.

Even as Zhang Sumei berated him, he was truly filled with guilt.
