This Doctor Is Too Wealthy

Lack of sleep had left Du Heng’s eyes painfully dry, and an occasional throb in his head made him extremely uncomfortable. It was impossible for him to concentrate on his work.

While others were conducting their ward rounds, Du Heng snuck back to his office to take a nap in his big chair.

Just as his eyes were about to close and his body was on the verge of relaxing, his office door was violently pushed open.

The cold breeze gusting in from the suddenly opened door blew directly onto Du Heng, who was sitting opposite it. The warmth around his body was ruthlessly dissipated, and Du Heng couldn’t help but shudder. His mind, however, suddenly cleared considerably.

More alarmingly, in his dazed state, he felt as if he’d missed a step and was falling, a sensation of weightlessness that made his heart clench violently.

Looking at the out-of-breath nurse at the door, Du Heng, for the first time, considered changing his office.

”Dean, Director Yu was beaten.”

The nurse’s anxious voice shattered Du Heng’s daze. ”Who did it? Where? How is he?”

”It was the patient who was admitted to the third floor just yesterday. Director Yu was leading everyone on ward rounds when the man, as if suffering from neurological disorders, suddenly grabbed Director Yu and started hitting him.”

Anxious, Du Heng shot up and hurried out the door, genuinely afraid one of his doctors had been seriously hurt.

”How is Director Yu?”

”He was punched twice in the face before Dr. Wu and the others managed to pull the attacker away.”

As he rushed up to the third floor, the entire corridor echoed with a man’s furious shouting and intermittent threats to kill someone or other.

The commotion had drawn a crowd, packing the already narrow corridor.

The faces of the onlooking patients’ families showed disdain, anger, and even contempt, yet every one of them was craning their necks, trying to get a better view of the incident at the center of the crowd.

”What’s going on here?” Du Heng’s sharp reprimand cut through the noise as he angrily pushed aside those blocking his way.

Entering the inner circle, he looked at the man whom two or three people couldn’t restrain. Pointing at the two male doctors holding him, Du Heng commanded, his eyes blazing with anger, ”Let go of him. Who do you intend to kill? Go on, try it. I’d like to see.”

At this moment, Du Heng looked like an enraged lion, all his usual gentleness and elegance gone, replaced by raw fury. It seemed that if the man dared to utter another defiant word, Du Heng would deliver a resounding slap.

This outburst not only startled the assailant but also frightened the doctors trying to intervene.

Seeing the suddenly quieted crowd, Du Heng’s pent-up anger from the previous day erupted. ”You have the guts to attack our hospital’s Vice Dean? The police station is right across the street. Do you believe I’ll hand you over right now?”

He then glared at the surrounding doctors and nurses. ”And you lot, are you completely useless? So many of you couldn’t hold down one man, and you even let Director Yu get hit! Are you all pushovers? When you encounter someone like this, you subdue him and call the police! Do I really need to teach you that?”

”All you cowards, turn in a self-criticism report to me before you leave work today. Now get lost.”

Du Heng seethed inwardly as he looked at this group, many of whom he suspected had ulterior motives.

He really didn’t believe that a dozen doctors and nurses couldn’t control one unarmed farmer.

Moreover, not only had they failed to remove the man, but they had also chosen a spot in the hallway that made it easier for everyone to gather around. Could this really have happened without some calculation on their part?

The man who attacked was hateful, but the people with ulterior motives on his own team were even more detestable!

Did they really think he was that easy to deal with?

Among them, Wu Buwei was one of the few sincerely trying to break up the fight and was still holding the man from behind. Although Du Heng had ordered him to let go, he hadn’t.

Du Heng turned and glanced at him. ”Let go of him.”

”But Senior Brother, what if...”

”Rest assured and let him go. I want to see if he really dares to try and kill me. He’s used to throwing his weight around in the village; does he really think he can run wild everywhere?”

Wu Buwei carefully released his grip, his entire attention fixed on the man. If the man made the slightest wrong move, he would immediately grab him again.

But the man didn’t behave as aggressively as before. Even though his eyes were full of resentment, he didn’t dare to raise his hand again.

Being aggressive and unreasonable towards others was one thing.

But he really didn’t have the courage to do that to Du Heng.

Who didn’t know Du Heng was a local? Who didn’t know about Du Heng’s relationship with Gong Daoyang? Moreover, everyone was saying that Du Heng and the new Town Mayor were classmates.

Gossip among the mountain folk spread no slower than in the cities, especially concerning local celebrities. News like this traveled faster than the wind.

Furthermore, the mountain folk who act aggressively are typically bullies, preying on the weak and fearing the strong. However, they are not foolish or witless; in fact, they are shrewder than anyone.

These people feared two types of individuals: those even more aggressive than themselves, and those with openly displayed, intimidating connections.

Du Heng was currently such a person. They were all from the same area; everyone knew everyone.

Glancing back at Yu Haiting, who was clutching his jaw, Du Heng’s anger flared. ”Apologize to our Director Yu!”

”Why should I? My wife was conscious when she was admitted yesterday, but after he treated her all night, she can’t even get up now! She’s too dizzy to eat. So what if I hit him?”

Under Du Heng’s oppressive gaze, the man indeed didn’t dare to make another move, but he continued to verbally justify his actions.
