One-Eyed Monster

Now the book lay quietly in front of the Great Witch, without a trace of its former clamor, looking completely different from when the Great Witch first found it.

When the Great Witch found this Spirit Book, it was jumping and lively. After she bought it back, the book found no peace in the attic, until she tied it up with a rope and threw it aside, it finally quieted down...

She didn’t expect that Igor, in such a short time, managed to tame the book into such quietness. This was completely beyond her expectations.

What the Great Witch didn’t know was that because of the book’s liveliness, Igor was targeted at the tavern at the foot of Guru Mountain. In order to get this Spirit Book that could be exchanged for gold coins, those treasure hunters followed Igor up the mountain. If not for the traps set up by the creatures on the mountain using the World Setting Technique, Igor would probably have been captured by the Earth Wolves of Black Mountain long ago.

If that had happened, the story would have taken a different direction.

The Great Witch opened the Spirit Book; there was no commotion, just like flipping an ordinary book.

”This...” The Great Witch was quite surprised. By reason, the book shouldn’t be this quiet. Usually, it would start chattering before anyone even opened it, but now it was as quiet as a sleeping baby, with not a peep.

”Uh, I don’t know what to say. This fellow has been dormant for a long time, not moving. I guess I was too forceful last time. I’ve been infusing a bit of spirit power into it from time to time, but it hasn’t reacted at all and continues to sleep.”

The Great Witch closed the book. At this moment, if the Spirit Book could not communicate with people, its usefulness would be greatly diminished, and this discount would affect many things.

But at least the book was still there, so the Great Witch could still flip through it. Perhaps she could find a record about the flashing colors of the wizard robe.

”I wonder when this guy will wake up. It used to be so active, sometimes even interrupting people, but now it sleeps so soundly.” Igor patted the book, as if patting a companion on the shoulder.

The creatures on Guru Mountain continued busy with their own affairs, ignoring Igor and the Great Witch. They felt their own discussions were more important, so they weren’t concerned with what Igor and the Great Witch were doing, not even Kadi, who usually liked to follow Igor. At this moment, he showed no curious actions at all. He just listened quietly to others’ discussions, occasionally dozing off. To be honest, their previous encounters had really exhausted them, so this rare quiet was already a luxurious time.

”Let me see this book!” The Great Witch said to Igor, after all, Igor was the owner of this Spirit Book now. Even though she once owned it, she couldn’t dispose of it at will.

”No problem. If Madame Witch can awaken this fellow, it would be even better!” Igor quickly handed over the Spirit Book.

”Uh, I might not be able to wake it, after all, it’s a Spirit Book and won’t be controlled easily by others.”

”Oh, I see...” Igor was slightly disappointed. He didn’t expect the Spirit Book would be like this, that even the Great Witch couldn’t wake it.

He thought that with enough spirit power and proper methods, he could easily awaken the book. Now it seemed that this was just wishful thinking on his part.

He finally realized that this book had its own will. No wonder when it spoke, it sounded strange. It really was a living book after all.

However, Igor had never really treated it like an ordinary book. To him, this guy had always been a reliable partner.

Yet, one fact after another proved to him that this partner wasn’t reliable at all. Sometimes it was even quite treacherous.

Just as Igor handed over this unreliable, treacherous partner to the Great Witch, the book suddenly started to tremble, then with a rustling sound, its pages began to flip by themselves and within moments, it jumped to the ground.

Then a familiar voice rang out.

”Who is it? Disturbing my rest!”

At that moment, the Spirit Book awakened once again, and so inopportunely.

Seeing this situation, Igor burst into laughter. Initially, he wanted to awaken the book himself, but now it awoke on its own, truly amusing.

”Haha, every time you wake up at such a time, giving a feeling of misfortune, it really spoils the mood!” Igor mocked himself.

”Oh, my Master, sorry, I didn’t expect my awakening would disturb you. Originally, I didn’t want to wake up, but I felt an invasion of spirit power...”

”Come off it, if you could feel an invasion of spirit power, you should have awakened a thousand times over by now...” Igor scoffed at the Spirit Book’s excuse. He was thoroughly acquainted with the Spirit Book’s quirks.

The awakening of the Spirit Book made the creatures on Guru Mountain raise their heads to glance over, then they immediately resumed their discussions. A Spirit Book was nothing special to them, they’d seen many of them before.

However, the Great Witch now looked at Igor in a new light. You must know, she had many Spirit Books, but never had she seen one like this. It was her first time witnessing a Spirit Book be so respectful to its owner. Usually, Spirit Books were arrogant, with their tails raised to the heavens.

The Spirit Books often retort to their owners like this, ”If you’re so capable, why don’t you find the answers yourself instead of bothering me!”

This remark often leaves the owners speechless, silently accepting the Spirit Book’s arrogant demeanor. Hence, most owners would rather lock them up with an iron lock when not in use, than endure their incessant chatter.

However, Lord Soron’s Spirit Book was actually respectful towards Igor, even with a hint of fear in its tone. The Great Witch really couldn’t understand what this Spirit Book had been through to treat Igor like this…

”Master, you have to believe me, I was very weak at the time, unable to awaken and lend you a hand...”

”Alright, I know you are an unreliable fellow. This time, it’s the Great Witch consulting you, not me summoning you. Besides, when have you ever awakened when I summoned you? I’m too lazy to bother with you now.”

”Master, please don’t treat me like this!” The Spirit Book sighed, seeming to sense Igor’s dissatisfaction...

”You’re just a book, what more can I do with you?” Igor said. In fact, he felt a little dissatisfaction, mainly because he thought this Spirit Book couldn’t come when called and was useless at critical moments.
