Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Audition Ambush

The smell of old mothballs and damp wool is distinct. It is the scent of a garment that has witnessed the slow, inevitable decline of a previous owner’s fortunes.

It was a scent that Elias van Kempen was intimately familiar with, having just spent fifteen minutes arguing with the proprietor of a dusty Los Angeles thrift store over a severely discounted, slightly frayed charcoal grey suit.

”The lapels are outdated by at least four fashion cycles,” Elias had stated, his tone flat and unyielding. ”And there is a microscopic coffee stain near the left cuff. Fifteen dollars.”

He had walked out of the store having successfully haggled the price down to twelve dollars. He then walked three blocks to a tiny, cramped alterations shop run by an elderly man with thick glasses.

Elias didn’t simply drop the suit off. He physically stood over the tailor, pointing to exactly where the darts needed to be placed.

”Take the waist in two inches. I require an aggressive, mathematical V-taper. The shoulders must remain entirely unpadded to emphasize natural bone structure. I will wait.”

He handed the tailor thirteen dollars in crumpled, physical cash.

Total capital expenditure: $25.00.

As Elias stood in the tiny fitting room, sliding his arms into the newly tailored jacket, the familiar, extortionate alarm bell echoed in his skull.

[CHA-CHING!]

[SYSTEM WARNING: SCHEDULED DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DUE.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias barely flinched. The pain was becoming background noise. His liquid cash reserve dropped to $51,000.00. The system was bleeding him, but he was about to open a new artery in the Hollywood ecosystem.

He stepped out of the fitting room and looked in the cracked mirror.

The suit still smelled faintly of mothballs, but structurally, it was a masterpiece. The aggressive taper accentuated his broad shoulders and narrow waist perfectly. Against his brooding, exotic features, the cheap, outdated wool looked less like poverty and more like an eccentric, intentional choice by a European aristocrat who found modern tailoring too pedestrian.

He was wearing the armor of a man worth millions, purchased for twenty-five dollars.

”Adequate,” Elias murmured to the mirror.

He walked out onto the blistering Hollywood pavement. It was time to execute the Scene-Stealer Hack.

In his previous life, Elias had learned the hard way that leading roles for unestablished actors were financial traps. They required four months of exclusive filming, blocking you from other projects, and the studios rarely offered gross backend participation to a newcomer. The leading man carried the marketing weight, but the supporting actor—the antagonist, the sociopath, the scene-stealer—only needed to film for three weeks.

You could steal the entire movie with a fraction of the time commitment, demand a percentage of the First-Dollar Gross, and be available for the next Net-60 fashion campaign a month later.

Elias’s Photographic Memory had zeroed in on a specific, legendary project currently in the casting phase.

Scent of a Woman.

Starring Al Pacino. The film was guaranteed to be a critical darling and a massive commercial success. It was the perfect vehicle. He wasn’t going for Pacino’s role, obviously. He was going for the role of the arrogant, wealthy prep school antagonist—a character whose screen time was limited, but whose impact was essential to the dramatic tension.

Elias arrived at the non-descript office building housing the casting agency. He bypassed the front desk and walked directly into the crowded waiting room.

The room was suffocatingly tense. It was packed with roughly twenty young, handsome, predominantly Caucasian actors in their early twenties. They were all wearing variations of expensive prep-school blazers and khakis. Some were muttering their lines to themselves; others were staring blankly at the walls, crippled by anxiety.

Sitting directly in the center of the room, on the nicest leather sofa, was a young man radiating an entirely different energy.

He was conventionally handsome, with a clean-cut, all-American face and perfectly styled hair. He wore a crisp navy blazer that hadn’t come from a thrift store. He was holding a thick script, leaning back and talking loudly to the two actors sitting next to him, making sure everyone in the room could hear him.

Elias’s brain instantly pulled the file.

Chris O’Donnell.

In the real timeline, O’Donnell would land a major role in the film, launching his career into the stratosphere. He was the golden boy, the safe, marketable face of early 90s youth.

”Yeah, my guy at CAA said Martin Brest specifically asked to see me again,” Chris was saying, a smug, self-satisfied smile on his face. ”It’s basically a formality at this point. They just want to make sure the chemistry reads right on camera. You know how it is. Sometimes you just have that it factor the studio wants to bank on.”

The other actors in the room nodded weakly, their own confidence visibly draining at the sound of the legendary CAA agency backing the guy in the center of the room.

Elias van Kempen did not nod. He did not feel intimidated. He felt a profound, sociopathic urge to destroy the boy’s illusions.

Elias walked over and casually sat down on the leather sofa, directly next to Chris. He didn’t ask if the seat was taken. He simply occupied the space, his dark, tailored suit standing out aggressively against the sea of preppy khakis.

Chris stopped talking, glancing sideways at Elias. He took in Elias’s sharp, exotic features and the intense, brooding aura. Chris frowned, instantly feeling an unnatural, defensive spike of insecurity.

”Hey. I don’t think I’ve seen you at the read-throughs,” Chris said, attempting to maintain his alpha posture. ”Who are you with? William Morris? UTA?”

Elias slowly turned his head. He didn’t smile. He looked at Chris with the clinical, dissecting gaze of a biologist examining a particularly uninteresting amoeba.

”I represent myself. Sovereign Media,” Elias stated smoothly, his baritone voice instantly commanding the attention of the immediate vicinity.

Chris let out a short, patronizing laugh. ”Represent yourself? Right. Good luck with that, man. The studios don’t take you seriously unless you have institutional backing. My agent had to fight off three other offers just to get me this room today. It’s a bloodbath out there.”

”Is it?” Elias murmured, leaning back into the sofa, steepling his long fingers together. ”You seem to be under the impression that your agency sent you here because you possess exceptional, irreplaceable talent.”

Chris’s smile faltered. His brow furrowed. ”Excuse me?”

”Let me clarify the macroeconomic reality of your situation, Chris,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying, silken intellectual violence. ”Your agency didn’t send you here because you are a generational acting talent. They sent you because your face is entirely, profoundly safe.”

The two actors sitting next to Chris stopped pretending to read their scripts. They were staring at Elias in shock.

”What the hell are you talking about?” Chris demanded, his voice rising, a flush of anger creeping up his neck.

”You are auditioning to share the screen with Al Pacino,” Elias explained, as if he were teaching a remedial math class. ”Pacino is a hurricane. He consumes all the oxygen in a scene. The studio is terrified that if they cast an actor with actual, dangerous charisma opposite him, the audience’s focus will split. The film will lose its narrative center.”

Elias leaned infinitesimally closer.

”They don’t want a co-star for Pacino, Chris,” Elias whispered, twisting the psychological knife. ”They want a prop. They want someone generic enough to fade into the background. They sent you because your aesthetic is entirely devoid of threat. You aren’t an actor in this ecosystem. You are interior decoration.”

Total silence descended upon the center of the waiting room.

Chris O’Donnell’s jaw dropped. The smug, self-satisfied aura completely shattered. A massive, comical sweatdrop formed near his perfectly styled hairline. His eyes darted nervously around the room, suddenly realizing that every other actor was looking at him not with envy, but with pity.

Elias had verbally stripped him of his perceived value. He had reframed Chris’s impending success not as a triumph of talent, but as a symptom of his own mediocrity.

”You’re... you’re full of shit,” Chris stammered, his voice shaking, his hands gripping his script so tightly his knuckles turned white.

”Elias van Kempen?”

A casting assistant holding a clipboard stood at the door leading to the inner offices.

Elias stood up smoothly, buttoning his twelve-dollar thrift store jacket. He looked down at Chris one last time.

”Focus on your lines, Chris,” Elias said gently, a masterclass in condescension. ”The studio is counting on you to be forgettable.”

Elias walked toward the door, leaving a psychologically decimated, sweating actor trembling on the sofa behind him. The waiting room ambush was a flawless success. He had eliminated the primary competition without throwing a single punch.

Elias stepped into the audition room.

It was a large, sterile space. Sitting behind a long table were three executives, a camera operator, and Mali Finn, one of the most legendary, discerning Casting Directors in Hollywood history. She was a woman who had discovered generations of stars, and she was notoriously difficult to impress.

Mali looked up from Elias’s resume—which was entirely blank except for the phrase ’Sovereign Media’ and a contact number at a Los Angeles motel.

”Elias,” Mali said, her voice sharp and professional. ”Interesting resume. Or lack thereof. We are reading sides for the role of George Willis Jr. It’s a small part, but it requires a very specific type of arrogant, East Coast entitlement.”

Elias didn’t walk to the small ’X’ taped on the floor. He stopped a few feet in front of the table.

He didn’t need to read the sides. He had Photographic Memory. He had seen the film. He knew exactly what the scene required. But simple competence wasn’t enough to demand a backend percentage. He needed to terrify them with his talent.

He mentally engaged the loan shark.

[SYSTEM SHOP ACCESSED.][ACTIVATING: OSCAR-LEVEL MICRO-EXPRESSIONS (DURATION: 2 MINUTES)][COST: -10 CP][CURRENT BALANCE: 0 CP - CRITICAL WARNING!]

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias felt the muscles in his face instantly recalibrate. The subtle tension around his eyes, the microscopic twitch of his jaw, the exact, sociopathic deadness of his gaze—it all aligned with terrifying perfection.

”I am not going to read the scene twice,” Elias stated, his baritone voice slicing through the sterile room. ”I am going to give you one take. It will be the take that generates an additional ten million dollars in your opening weekend box office. Pay attention.”

One of the studio executives scoffed. ”Kid, just hit your mark and read the lines.”

Elias ignored him. He looked directly at Mali Finn.

And then, he shifted.

He didn’t just act arrogant; he became a terrifying, cold-blooded embodiment of generational wealth and sociopathic entitlement. His posture shifted imperceptibly. His eyes went dead. When he spoke the lines, he didn’t shout. He spoke with a quiet, lethal softness that made the air in the room feel freezing cold.

He delivered the dialogue with such intense, raw malice that the camera operator actually took a step back from the lens.

Elias finished the scene. He held the final, chilling stare for exactly three seconds.

Then, he dropped the persona, instantly returning to his normal, unbothered posture.

The silence in the room was absolute.

Mali Finn was staring at him, her pen hovering an inch above her notepad. The studio executive who had scoffed earlier was sitting frozen, his mouth slightly open.

Elias had just detonated a nuclear weapon in a room expecting a firecracker.

”My god,” Mali finally whispered, breaking the silence. She looked at the other executives, then back at Elias. ”That was... terrifying. That wasn’t just arrogant prep-school. That was dangerous.”

”It is exactly what the scene requires to counterbalance Pacino’s volume,” Elias stated clinically.

The lead studio executive cleared his throat, suddenly sitting up very straight. ”Okay. Okay, kid. That was a hell of a read. I think we can skip the callbacks. We can offer you the role right now. Scale plus ten percent. Standard SAG daily rate for three weeks of work.”

It was a standard offer. It was a good offer for a nobody.

Elias van Kempen smiled. It was the smile of a shark tasting blood in the water.

”I accept the role,” Elias said smoothly. ”However, I do not work for standard SAG daily rates.”

The executive frowned. ”What are you talking about? You don’t have a single credit. You take scale.”

Elias leaned forward, placing both hands flat on the edge of the executives’ table. He activated his natural, un-buffed Playboy Alpha dominance, mixing it with the raw arrogance of a man who knew he held the winning hand.

”My face,” Elias declared, his voice a low, terrifying rumble, ”is currently the centerpiece of a multi-million dollar global fashion campaign that will launch one month before this film premieres. By the time this movie hits theaters, I will be one of the most recognizable faces in the Western Hemisphere. You are not buying a struggling actor. You are renting an established, high-yield marketing asset.”

The executives exchanged panicked, rapid-fire glances. A massive, collective sweatdrop seemed to materialize over the table.

”Sovereign Media,” Elias continued, delivering the capitalist kill shot, ”demands three percent of the First-Dollar Gross for every second my face is visible on screen. You will bypass Hollywood Accounting. You will pay me from the initial box office receipts.”

”Three percent of first-dollar?!” the executive choked, practically falling out of his chair. ”For a supporting role?! Pacino isn’t even getting three percent of first-dollar! That’s insane! It’s unprecedented!”

”The precedent has just been established,” Elias smiled, standing up and straightening his twelve-dollar thrift store tie. ”I will give you twenty-four hours to draft the contracts. If I do not have them by noon tomorrow, I will take my aesthetic to Warner Brothers.”

Elias turned and walked out of the audition room, leaving behind a table of shattered, hyperventilating Hollywood power brokers.

He stepped back out into the Los Angeles sun. His CP was at zero. The system could strike at any moment.

But he had just planted his flag in the absolute heart of the film industry. The Scene-Stealer Hack was officially operational.
