Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Flight and The Photographer

The heavy glass doors of the Beverly Hills agency swung shut, sealing Amanda Sterling and her freshly signed contract inside the air-conditioned fortress.

Elias van Kempen stood on the sun-baked sidewalk, the crumpled blue courier shirt shoved unceremoniously into the nearest trash can. He adjusted the lapels of his pristine Armani suit, a slow, fiercely charismatic smile spreading across his face. He had the booking slip. The Marcus Schenkenberg era was officially on life support.

But a signed slip in Los Angeles meant absolutely nothing if he wasn’t standing in front of a camera in Italy by tomorrow morning.

Elias didn’t celebrate. He immediately walked three blocks to a grimy public restroom in a strip mall, meticulously stripped off the three-thousand-dollar Armani suit, and folded it into a protective garment bag he had stashed in a locker. He changed back into his faded, threadbare vintage jeans and the scuffed leather jacket. The European aristocrat vanished; the street-smart hustler returned.

Two hours later, after an agonizingly slow RTD bus ride, Elias strode into the chaotic, echoing expanse of the Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX.

The air was thick with the smell of jet fuel, anxiety, and expensive luggage. Elias bypassed the bustling queues for the American carriers and zeroed in on the Alitalia desk.

Standing behind the counter was a young ticketing agent whose name tag read Marco. Marco was currently staring at a blinking computer terminal with an expression of profound, soul-crushing boredom.

Elias approached the counter, leaning his tall, 189-centimeter frame casually against the edge. He didn’t look like a desperate traveler. He projected the relaxed, street-smart arrogance of a guy who held all the cards.

”Good evening, Marco,” Elias greeted, his baritone voice smooth and deeply conversational. ”Flight 621 to Milan Malpensa. It pushes back in exactly fifty-five minutes.”

Marco blinked, looking up at the teenager in the scuffed leather jacket. ”Uh, yeah. Boarding starts in ten minutes. Are you trying to check in? I need your passport and ticket.”

”I have the passport,” Elias smirked, sliding the Dutch document across the counter. ”The ticket is what we are going to negotiate.”

Marco frowned, his customer-service facade cracking. ”Negotiate? Sir, this is an airline, not a flea market. A walk-up, same-day fare to Milan is twelve hundred dollars. Economy.”

Elias let out a rich, warm chuckle, shaking his head as if Marco had just told a highly amusing joke. He leaned in closer, dropping his voice into a conspiratorial, charismatic register.

”Marco, my friend, let’s discard the corporate script,” Elias suggested, flashing a brilliant, million-dollar smile. ”We both know the basic physics of commercial aviation. An airplane seat is the ultimate depreciating asset. The moment that cabin door seals, any empty seat instantly loses one hundred percent of its retail value. It becomes a total financial void.”

Marco stared at him, bewildered by the sudden onslaught of economic theory. ”Sir, I can’t just—”

”I was watching the departure monitors,” Elias interrupted effortlessly, his eyes locking onto the agent’s. ”Your flight is currently operating at an eighty-two percent load factor. You have at least thirty empty seats in the back of that Boeing 747. Right now, those seats are generating zero revenue, but they are still burning jet fuel.”

Elias reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, tightly folded stack of cash. He didn’t slam it down. He gently fanned the bills out on the counter, just out of the view of the security cameras.

”Three hundred and fifty dollars,” Elias offered, his voice a silken, irresistible current. ”Raw, immediate liquidity. You punch me in as a standby passenger who miraculously cleared the gate list. Alitalia secures three hundred and fifty dollars for a piece of real estate that was about to expire into thin air. Your supervisor praises your aggressive yield management, and I get to drink bad Italian coffee by sunrise. It is a flawless, victimless transaction.”

Marco swallowed hard. A massive, highly comedic sweatdrop materialized on his forehead. The logic was utterly impenetrable. The kid in the dirty boots was speaking like an aviation executive, and the absolute, unshakeable confidence in his eyes was paralyzing.

Marco looked at the cash. He looked at the clock. Boarding was indeed starting.

With a heavy sigh of a man thoroughly defeated by capitalism, Marco snatched the three hundred and fifty dollars off the counter.

”Row 52,” Marco muttered, typing furiously on his keyboard. ”Middle seat. Right next to the lavatory. I hope you enjoy the smell of chemical toilets, kid.”

”I enjoy the smell of retained capital, Marco,” Elias smiled, taking the freshly printed boarding pass. ”Have a spectacular evening.”

As Elias walked away from the counter, securing his duffel bag, a violent, mechanical sound detonated inside his skull.

[CHA-CHING!][SYSTEM WARNING: DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DUE.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias didn’t even break his stride. The pain of the fifty dollars vanishing into the digital ether was acute, but he mentally adjusted his ledger. He had successfully crossed an ocean for a fraction of the market price. His liquid cash settled at $51,225.00.

Fourteen hours later, Elias discovered that Row 52 was not just a seat; it was a psychological torture experiment.

He was wedged between a violently snoring tourist who kept invading his armrest and a perpetually crying toddler two rows ahead. The ambient roar of the jet engines was deafening, and every five minutes, the heavy plastic door of the lavatory slammed shut, releasing a waft of blue sanitizing fluid into the cabin.

A flight attendant pushed a metal cart down the narrow aisle.

”Headphones for the in-flight movie? Five dollars,” she offered, holding up a cheap pair of plastic earbuds. ”Or a premium snack box for three dollars?”

Elias looked at the snack box. His stomach let out a hollow, agonizing growl. He hadn’t eaten since a generic packet of instant noodles at the motel.

”No, thank you,” Elias said, flashing her a breathtaking, polite smile. ”Fasting clarifies the mind.”

The flight attendant raised an eyebrow and moved on.

Elias closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the thin, uncomfortable seat. Every bone in his body ached. The hunger gnawed at his ribs. A normal person would have paid the three dollars just to stop the physical suffering.

But Elias van Kempen was a man at war. Every dollar saved was a psychological victory against the parasitic loan shark living in his brain. Hunger is free, he reminded himself, letting the steady vibration of the aircraft lull him into a state of clinical endurance. Comfort is a tax on the weak.

When Flight 621 finally touched down at Milan Malpensa, the sun was already rising over the Italian Alps.

Elias didn’t waste money on a private car service to the set. He navigated the complex, chaotic Italian railway system, taking a cheap commuter train straight out of the city and heading north toward the legendary Lake Como.

The transition from the grimy train station to the actual location was a visual whiplash.

Lake Como in 1991 was the playground of billionaires, European royalty, and the global fashion elite. The water was a brilliant, shimmering sapphire, flanked by massive, emerald-green mountains.

Elias walked the last mile up a steep, winding cobblestone driveway. At the top sat the Villa del Balbianello—a sprawling, jaw-dropping Renaissance estate with manicured terraced gardens overlooking the lake. It was the epitome of opulent, untouchable wealth.

The Versace editorial team had completely taken over the grounds.

Massive lighting rigs were set up near the stone balconies. Assistants were running around with walkie-talkies. And lounging near a massive marble fountain were the models.

They were five of the most genetically blessed men on the planet. They were deeply tanned, aggressively muscular, and possessed the flowing hair and chiselled jaws that defined the early 90s aesthetic. They wore nothing but brightly printed, unbuttoned Versace silk robes, sipping espresso and laughing loudly. They looked like Roman gods waiting for a feast.

And then, there was Elias.

He walked onto the manicured lawn carrying his scuffed duffel bag. His vintage jeans were dusty from the train ride. His faded white t-shirt was wrinkled, and his leather jacket looked entirely out of place in the humid Italian summer.

The conversation around the fountain died instantly.

The muscular models turned to look at him. One of them, a guy with biceps the size of Elias’s head, let out a loud, mocking snort.

”Scusa,” the model called out in broken Italian, waving a dismissive hand. ”Did the caterer finally arrive? We requested fresh croissants an hour ago. The kitchen is around the back, kid.”

His friends burst into a chorus of arrogant laughter.

Elias didn’t stop walking. He didn’t glare. He didn’t even acknowledge their existence. He simply walked past the fountain with the unhurried, magnetic swagger of a man who owned the villa, his dark eyes scanning the chaotic set for the only person who actually mattered.

He spotted him near the edge of the balcony, arguing with an art director.

Bruce Weber.

The legendary fashion photographer was a force of nature. He was famous for defining the hyper-masculine, athletic, and deeply sensual aesthetic of the 1980s and 90s. He loved muscles. He loved vitality. He loved the illusion of perfect, healthy American youth, even when shooting for an Italian house.

Weber was looking through the viewfinder of his medium-format camera, sighing heavily.

”It’s too stiff,” Weber complained to his assistant. ”They look like statues. Gianni wants passion. He wants heat. Where is Marcus? Did Marcus miss his flight?”

”Marcus’s agency called this morning,” the assistant stammered, looking terrified. ”They said he was pulled. But Amanda Sterling in L.A. sent a replacement. She swore he was the new face of the season.”

”A replacement?” Weber groaned, turning around. ”Who?”

Elias stepped into the photographer’s line of sight, casually dropping his duffel bag onto the pristine marble tiles.

Bruce Weber stopped. His eyes scanned Elias from the dusty boots to the messy, dark hair. The photographer’s face instantly twisted into a mask of profound disappointment.

”You have got to be kidding me,” Weber sighed, throwing his hands in the air. He turned to his assistant, not even trying to hide his frustration. ”Amanda sent this? He’s a stick! Where are the broad shoulders? Where’s the chest? This is a Gianni Versace campaign, not a documentary about starving artists! The clothes are going to hang off him like a hanger!”

The assistant sweatdropped, frantically flipping through her clipboard. ”Bruce, Amanda said—”

”I don’t care what Amanda said!” Weber barked, pacing around his camera. ”Look at the guys by the fountain! That is the brand! This kid looks like he hasn’t eaten in a week!”

Elias didn’t activate a system skill. He didn’t have the CP to spare, and more importantly, he didn’t need synthetic help to win an argument about art and commerce. He had lived through the impending cultural shift. He knew exactly what the next decade was going to buy.

Elias took a slow, deliberate step forward, invading the legendary photographer’s personal space.

”You are correct, Bruce,” Elias stated, his baritone voice incredibly smooth, cutting through the anxiety of the crew like a warm knife through butter. ”I haven’t eaten properly in a week.”

Weber stopped pacing, surprised by the kid’s sheer audacity to speak up, let alone agree with the insult. ”Excuse me?”

Elias offered a charismatic, predatory smile. He pointed a long, elegant finger toward the group of muscular models laughing by the fountain.

”Look at them,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a captivating, street-smart rhythm. ”They are beautiful. They are healthy. They look like they spend six hours a day in a gym and drink protein shakes for dinner. They sell security, Bruce. They sell the illusion that everything is fine.”

Elias took another step closer, his dark, exotic eyes locking directly onto the photographer’s.

”But security is boring,” Elias whispered, the raw, magnetic intensity of his gaze practically paralyzing the surrounding crew. ”The 1980s are over. The illusion of excess is dead. The next generation doesn’t want to buy a silk shirt because they want to look safe. They want to buy it because they want to feel dangerous.”

Weber stared at the teenager, his brilliant, artistic mind suddenly snagging on the words. The kid was speaking absolute heresy to the Versace brand identity, but he was saying it with such profound, unshakeable conviction that it was impossible to look away.

”Muscles sell security, Bruce,” Elias finished softly, his jawline catching the morning sunlight, his eyes burning with an authentic, undeniable fire. ”But hunger... hunger sells desire. If you want to shoot another safe, boring catalog spread, put one of those statues in front of the lens. But if you want to create an image that people will still be talking about in ten years... you light me up.”

The silence on the balcony was absolute. The assistant holding the clipboard had literally stopped breathing.

Bruce Weber stared at Elias van Kempen. The photographer’s eyes darted over the sharp cheekbones, the hollow, desperate edge of the kid’s frame, and the incredible, undeniable charisma radiating from his posture. It was wrong. It was completely against the established rules.

But Weber was an artist first. And artists were addicted to disruption.

A slow, manic grin spread across Bruce Weber’s face.

He spun around, clapping his hands together with a sound like a gunshot.

”Wardrobe!” Weber bellowed across the terrace, his voice echoing off the lake. ”Get him out of those rags! Put him in the black silk! Lighting, kill the fill! I want harsh shadows! Let’s see if this kid can back up that mouth!”

Elias didn’t smile. He simply picked up his duffel bag, his expression a mask of cool, aristocratic boredom.

The gatekeeper had been conquered. The stage was set. The Italian sun was shining, but Elias was about to bring the dark.
