Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Phantom Office Hack

The suffocating, smog-heavy heat of Los Angeles was a stark contrast to the biting wind of New York, but the interior of Room 104 at The Pelican Motel remained a depressing constant. The peeling floral wallpaper and the humming, asthmatic window AC unit were exactly as Elias had left them.

He pushed the flimsy door open, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder, the ”Creep” master tape secured safely in his inner jacket pocket. He expected a chaotic briefing on the Levi’s commercial leak.

Instead, he walked into a scene of absolute, paralyzed horror.

Paul Rudd was sitting on the edge of the sagging mattress, his hands clutching his curly hair, staring blankly at the small, convex television set perched on the cheap dresser. Charlize Theron was standing near the window, her arms crossed tight across her chest, her blonde hair pulled back in a severe ponytail. Her jaw was clenched so hard a muscle twitched in her cheek.

On the screen, a rerun of MTV’s Totally Pauly was playing.

Specifically, the exact five seconds where Elias van Kempen, the brooding, aristocratic face of the Calvin Klein Fall ’92 campaign, was executing a cold, soulless, and mathematically precise Chicken Dance in the middle of Times Square.

The segment ended. Pauly Shore’s bewildered face reappeared, stammering through an outro.

”Elias,” Paul whispered, his voice trembling as if he had just witnessed a war crime. He slowly turned his head to look at Elias. ”What did you do?”

”I executed a market penetration test,” Elias replied smoothly, dropping his duffel bag onto the stained carpet. He unbuttoned his vintage leather jacket, projecting total, unbothered confidence.

”A market penetration test?!” Paul shrieked, finally snapping out of his paralysis. He jumped up from the bed, waving his hands frantically at the television. ”You flapped your arms like poultry on national television! You looked like a sociopath trying to communicate with aliens! The phone hasn’t stopped ringing for three hours! People are confused! They don’t know if you’re a genius, a comedian, or suffering from a neurological breakdown!”

”Exactly,” Elias smiled, a slow, predatory expression. ”Confusion generates discourse. Discourse generates free advertising space. I verbally anchored the Sovereign Media brand to the stunt. Every casting director in Hollywood and every teenager in America is currently asking the same question: Who is Elias van Kempen? I just bypassed two million dollars in traditional marketing overhead for the cost of my dignity.”

Charlize let out a sharp, cynical laugh. She didn’t buy the corporate spin for a second. She walked over, stopping inches from Elias, looking up at him with her piercing green eyes.

”You ran out of money, didn’t you?” Charlize asked, her voice dropping into a low, intuitive register. She was his equal. She knew the hustle. ”You couldn’t afford to bribe your way out of a situation in New York, so you had to do something humiliating to survive. Don’t bullshit me, Elias. I saw your eyes on that screen. You hated every second of it.”

Elias looked down at her. He couldn’t lie to Charlize. She was the only person in the room who understood the sheer, agonizing weight of the capitalist machine grinding against his spine.

”Capital preservation requires absolute sacrifice,” Elias murmured, offering a tiny, imperceptible nod that only she would understand.

Before Charlize could press him further, a loud, aggressive knock hammered against the motel room door.

Paul jumped, grabbing his chest. ”It’s the police! Or the fashion police! They’ve come to arrest you for crimes against choreography!”

Elias rolled his eyes and opened the door.

Stan, the perpetually sweating, chain-smoking manager of The Pelican Motel, was standing in the hallway holding a pink message slip.

”Hey, kid,” Stan grunted, coughing out a cloud of cheap tobacco smoke. ”I ain’t your secretary. You gotta start taking your own calls. Some guy named Ari Emanuel has called the front desk three times in the last hour. Says he’s from WME. Sounded like a real prick. He said if you don’t call him back in ten minutes, he’s gonna buy this motel and bulldoze it with you inside.”

Elias didn’t flinch. He took the pink slip from Stan.

Ari Emanuel.

The name hit the room like a localized earthquake. Paul gasped. Charlize stiffened.

In the early 90s, the William Morris Endeavor agency was a titan, and Ari Emanuel was its most bloodthirsty predator. He was the real-life inspiration for every ruthless, foul-mouthed Hollywood agent stereotype. He was brilliant, he was aggressive, and he destroyed boutique agencies for sport.

”He wants to acquire us,” Elias analyzed instantly, his brain shifting into high gear. ”The Levi’s leak and the MTV stunt have triggered his radar. He sees a rising asset without institutional backing. He assumes we are vulnerable. He wants to buy Sovereign Media for pennies and trap me in a standard agency contract.”

”So we don’t call him back,” Paul said quickly, retreating toward the bathroom. ”We hide. We change our names. We move to Canada.”

”Cowardice is bad for valuation, Paul,” Elias said, his dark eyes gleaming with sudden, thrilling inspiration. He looked at the cheap rotary phone sitting on the nightstand.

He didn’t need to hide. He needed to project power. But power required infrastructure, and he was currently standing in a dusty room that smelled of mildew.

”We are going to call him back,” Elias declared, turning to Paul and Charlize. ”But we cannot let him know that Sovereign Media is currently operating out of a bedbug sanctuary. We need to execute the Phantom Office Hack.”

Paul blinked. ”The what?”

Elias began moving with terrifying, sociopathic efficiency. ”Ari Emanuel respects chaos, volume, and momentum. We are going to manufacture the acoustic footprint of a thriving, multi-million-dollar talent agency. Paul, get the typewriter.”

”The typewriter is broken! The ’E’ key sticks!”

”I don’t care if it writes poetry, Paul, I just need the percussive sound of aggressive administrative labor!” Elias snapped, shoving the heavy, ancient metal typewriter onto the small desk. ”When I pick up the phone, you will strike the keys with the manic intensity of a secretary processing a hundred contracts an hour.”

Elias turned to the television. He grabbed the dial and violently twisted it away from MTV, flipping through the channels until he hit a local financial news station. A pundit was loudly arguing about interest rates. Elias cranked the volume up to a medium, low-level drone.

”Corporate ambient noise,” Elias muttered, satisfied. He turned to Charlize. ”Charlize. You are my Senior Vice President of International Acquisitions. When I signal you, I need you to scream into the void.”

Charlize raised an eyebrow, a slow, wicked smile spreading across her beautiful face. She loved this part. ”What do you want me to scream?”

”Anything,” Elias said. ”Preferably in Afrikaans. It sounds aggressive and expensive to an American ear. Yell about a breached contract in London. Make it sound like you are firing someone.”

The stage was set. The volume in the small room was already cacophonous.

Elias picked up the receiver of the rotary phone and dialed the number on the pink slip.

As the line connected, a familiar, agonizing sound chimed in his head.

[CHA-CHING!]

[SYSTEM WARNING: SCHEDULED DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DUE.][DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias squeezed his eyes shut, a sharp hiss escaping his teeth as the fifty dollars vanished. The system was trolling him, hitting him with a maintenance fee precisely at the moment he needed absolute focus. His liquid cash dropped to $50,630.00.

The line clicked.

”Emanuel,” a sharp, aggressive voice barked through the receiver. It wasn’t a greeting; it was a challenge.

Elias opened his eyes. He dropped into his baritone register, projecting a localized aura of absolute, unbothered arrogance.

”Ari. Elias van Kempen. Sovereign Media,” Elias stated smoothly.

He snapped his fingers at Paul.

Paul, sweating profusely, began hammering the keys of the broken typewriter with frantic, terrifying speed. CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK. It sounded like a hailstorm hitting a tin roof.

”Jesus Christ, kid, what is that noise? Are you running a sweatshop?” Ari snapped.

”Growth is loud, Ari,” Elias replied effortlessly, raising his voice slightly to be heard over the racket. ”My apologies. We are currently processing the international syndication rights for the Calvin Klein campaign. The legal department is slightly overwhelmed.”

Elias pointed at Charlize.

Charlize leaned back, cupping her hands around her mouth, and unleashed a torrent of furious, rapid-fire Afrikaans toward the ceiling.

”Ek sal jou in die hof dagvaar as daardie kontrak nie teen middernag geteken is nie! Julle is almal onbevoeg!” she screamed, her voice carrying the absolute, terrifying authority of a high-end executive executing a corporate massacre.

”Who the fuck is that?” Ari demanded, his tone shifting from aggressive to genuinely confused.

”That is my VP of European Operations. She is currently liquidating a subsidiary in Milan,” Elias lied with breathtaking ease. ”Now, Ari. My time is currently valued at roughly five thousand dollars a minute. To what do I owe the pleasure of this interruption?”

There was a pause on the line. Ari Emanuel, the man who regularly made studio heads cry, was audibly thrown off balance. He had expected to call a naive, struggling teenager in a motel room. Instead, his ears were assaulted by the acoustic environment of a booming, chaotic, highly successful corporate headquarters. The illusion was flawless.

”Alright, let’s cut the shit, kid,” Ari recovered, his voice turning hard and predatory. ”I saw the Levi’s leak. I saw the MTV stunt. You’re hot. You’ve got momentum. But you’re operating out of a shoebox, no matter how many fake secretaries you have typing in the background. You don’t have the infrastructure to scale. You don’t have the Rolodex. I do.”

”You have a Rolodex of aging stars, Ari. I have a monopoly on the next decade,” Elias countered smoothly.

”I’m offering to buy Sovereign Media,” Ari declared, ignoring the insult. ”I’ll give you a million dollars for the LLC right now. You dissolve your fake agency, you come under the WME umbrella, and I make you the biggest star in the world. You get the A-list scripts. You get the prime campaigns. And I take my twenty percent. It’s a win-win.”

A million dollars.

Paul, who had stopped typing to listen, let out a choked gasp. A million dollars was a lottery ticket.

Elias didn’t even blink. He knew the trap. A million dollars upfront meant giving up his Masters, his publishing, his backend gross, and his autonomy. He would be an employee again.

He needed to reject the offer, but he needed to do it without making Ari Emanuel furious enough to actually destroy him. He needed to use the system.

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias let out a laugh. It wasn’t a mocking guffaw. It was a rich, warm, deeply charismatic laugh that sounded incredibly elegant, powerful, and utterly dismissive. It was the laugh of a billionaire humoring a toddler.

”Ari,” Elias chuckled, the sound cutting through the tension. ”You sound like a dinosaur getting angry at an asteroid. I don’t sell equity. Sovereign Media is not for sale.”

”You’re making a mistake, kid,” Ari warned, his voice dropping an octave. ”You don’t want to make an enemy out of me. I can make sure nobody in this town answers your calls.”

”Ari, you are calling me because your current roster of leading men is aging out of the key demographic,” Elias stated, his tone suddenly turning sharp and clinical, utilizing his future memory. ”You need young blood to maintain your leverage with the studios. You need me more than I need you. If you try to blacklist me, I will simply sign an exclusive distribution deal with CAA, and you will have to explain to your partners why you let the most profitable asset of the decade walk into the arms of your biggest rival.”

Dead silence on the line.

Elias had hit the absolute, undeniable nerve. CAA was WME’s mortal enemy. The mere mention of the rival agency paralyzing Ari’s aggression. A massive, invisible sweatdrop formed on the super-agent’s forehead. The kid’s logic was unbreakable.

”I am not your employee, Ari,” Elias said softly, delivering the final, graceful blow. ”I am your peer. I am not selling my company. But... I will allow you to buy me lunch next week. We can discuss a non-exclusive, project-by-project partnership. Have your girl call my girl.”

Elias hung up the phone. He didn’t wait for Ari to respond. He severed the connection at the absolute height of his power.

The heavy clack of the rotary phone dropping onto the receiver echoed in the small motel room.

Elias reached over and turned off the television.

Paul slowly stopped typing. He looked at his hands, then looked at Elias, his eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated awe.

”Did you... did you just big-time Ari Emanuel?” Paul whispered, his voice trembling. ”Did you just tell the scariest man in Hollywood that he was a dinosaur?”

Charlize walked over, a look of profound, genuine respect on her face. She looked around the dingy, depressing motel room, then looked at Elias.

”You are a terrifying human being, Elias,” Charlize smiled, her green eyes flashing. ”You convinced a shark that you were a whale, and you did it sitting on a mattress that smells like cheap bleach.”

”The market is built on perception, Charlize,” Elias sighed, the adrenaline finally leaving his system.

The Phantom Office Hack had worked flawlessly. He had repelled a hostile acquisition, established dominance over a major gatekeeper, and protected his equity.

But the physical toll of the last forty-eight hours—the Hamptons shoot, the New York flights, the system extortion, the MTV humiliation, and the recording session—suddenly crashed down upon his sixteen-year-old body.

Without another word, Elias van Kempen, the CEO of the rapidly expanding Sovereign Media empire, collapsed backward onto the cheap, thin mattress of the Pelican Motel. He was asleep before his head hit the lumpy pillow, a faint, satisfied smirk still resting on his lips.

He was broke, exhausted, and living in a slum.

But he owned everything.
