Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Alpha Collision

The sun was beginning its slow, golden descent over Beverly Hills, casting long, expensive shadows across the manicured sidewalks of Rodeo Drive.

Elias van Kempen sat on the open-air terrace of an obscenely overpriced Italian café, his long legs crossed beneath a wrought-iron table. He was wearing his twelve-dollar thrift store suit, but he carried it with the untouchable, aristocratic grace of a European duke.

On the table in front of him rested a tiny, porcelain cup containing a single shot of espresso. It cost fifteen dollars. Elias had been nursing it for forty-five minutes, internally calculating the exact molecular breakdown of the coffee bean to justify the extortionate price.

Scent of a Woman, Elias thought, his mind racing through the macroeconomic projections of his recent victory. If the film grosses its historical 134 million dollars worldwide, a three percent First-Dollar Gross yields approximately four million dollars. A highly acceptable return on a twenty-five-dollar tailoring investment.

But the euphoria of future millions was heavily muted by the terrifying reality of his present.

In his peripheral vision, the retro, green-and-red interface of the Shameless Capitalist System blinked with a slow, ominous pulse.

[SYSTEM WARNING: SHAMELESS POINTS (CP) AT ABSOLUTE ZERO.][DEFENSIVE MEASURES DISABLED. ANY SUDDEN LOGISTICAL CRISIS WILL TRIGGER THE AESTHETIC DEGRADATION PROTOCOL. YOUR CHEEKBONES ARE CURRENTLY UNINSURED.]

Elias took a microscopic sip of his espresso, his jaw tightening. Zero CP was a death sentence. Without points, he couldn’t buy a micro-expression, he couldn’t summon a dominant aura, and worst of all, the system was hovering over him with the threat of a massive, purulent cyst if he didn’t generate points quickly. He was flying completely blind in the most dangerous city on earth.

”Elias.”

He looked up.

Charlize Theron strode onto the café terrace, turning the heads of three separate tables of Hollywood producers as she walked. She hadn’t changed out of her faded denim jacket and scuffed combat boots, but the sheer, fierce velocity of her stride made the grunge aesthetic look like high-end couture.

She dropped a thick, manila envelope onto the wrought-iron table with a heavy smack.

”It arrived at the P.O. Box,” Charlize announced, pulling out a chair and sitting down, her South African accent thick with residual adrenaline. ”The drafted contract from WME. Ari Emanuel’s office processed it. They caved on everything, Elias. The Favored Nations clause is in there. I get the trailer. I get the billing.”

Elias didn’t smile. He placed his espresso cup down with clinical precision. ”Naturally. They were negotiating from a position of absolute terror.”

”I am officially a working actress,” Charlize breathed, leaning back and running a hand through her messy blonde hair. A rare, genuinely unguarded smile broke across her face. ”I’m going to be on a set with Richard Donner and Mel Gibson. You actually did it.”

”We did it,” Elias corrected smoothly, though his eyes remained locked on the street, hyper-aware of his vulnerability. ”Now, we need to leverage this casting announcement to force West Coast Talent into a public—”

”Excuse me.”

The voice was smooth, cultured, and carried the effortless authority of a woman who was used to the world stopping when she spoke.

Elias froze. Charlize’s smile vanished instantly.

They both looked up.

Standing beside their table, blocking the late afternoon sun, was Cindy Crawford.

She was at the absolute, untouchable zenith of her 1992 supermodel reign. She wore a flawless, camel-colored designer trench coat over a simple black dress, her signature brunette hair cascading perfectly over her shoulders. A pair of oversized, dark sunglasses hid her eyes, but the iconic mole near her lip was unmistakable.

Elias’s brain processed the logistical catastrophe in a fraction of a millisecond.

The Runway Mafia has breached the perimeter.

”Elias van Kempen,” Cindy said, slowly lowering her sunglasses to reveal dark, piercing eyes. She didn’t look happy. She looked like a predator who had finally tracked down an elusive, highly annoying prey. ”You hijacked a three-million-dollar Calvin Klein campaign in The Hamptons, forced me to pose next to you while you practically stripped, stole the entire creative direction of the brand... and then you simply vanished.”

Elias didn’t flinch. He couldn’t afford to. His CP was zero. If he showed an ounce of weakness, the system would disfigure him on the spot.

”I didn’t vanish, Cindy,” Elias replied, his baritone voice a masterclass in relaxed, magnetic arrogance. ”I merely relocated my assets to a more volatile market. How did you find me?”

”I have agents at Elite who have agents at Storm,” Cindy scoffed, crossing her arms. ”Word travels fast when an unknown teenager strong-arms David Fincher into a bathtub shoot on the Warner Bros. lot. You are currently the biggest ghost in the industry.”

Cindy’s eyes finally drifted away from Elias and landed on the woman sitting across from him.

The air on the café terrace instantly dropped twenty degrees.

Charlize Theron did not shrink back. She didn’t look starstruck. She leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table, her piercing blue eyes locking onto the legendary supermodel. The raw, aggressive survival instincts of the South African farm girl flared to life, colliding violently with the polished, institutional power of the American runway queen.

It was an apex predator standoff.

”Did the agency hire you a bodyguard, Elias?” Cindy asked, her voice dripping with elegant, razor-sharp condescension. She looked at Charlize’s scuffed combat boots and frayed denim. ”Or is this homeless grunge aesthetic a permanent affliction you force upon your entourage?”

Charlize’s jaw clicked. She stood up slowly, utilizing every inch of her impressive height, towering just slightly over the supermodel.

”I am not his entourage, sweetheart,” Charlize countered, her voice dangerously low and coated in ice. ”I am his Head of Agency Expansion. And unlike a plastic mannequin who gets paid to stand still and wear other people’s clothes, I actually have a speaking role.”

Cindy’s eyes narrowed into terrifying slits. ”A speaking role? How quaint. I suppose they need someone to serve coffee in the background of a real production.”

”I’d offer to serve you coffee, but I wouldn’t want to ruin your strict diet of air and vanity,” Charlize fired back, stepping closer.

Elias watched the two women, his internal alarms screaming. This was not a productive synergy. This was a nuclear meltdown. The Runway Mafia and the Hollywood Royalty factions were colliding years before he had the infrastructure to manage them.

Without CP, he couldn’t cast a calming aura. He couldn’t deploy a hypnotic baritone skill to defuse the tension. If they started throwing fifteen-dollar espresso cups at each other, the paparazzi would be here in minutes, and his carefully constructed corporate illusion would be shattered.

He needed a distraction. A massive, undeniable, shamelessly absurd distraction.

”Excuse me, sir. Your bill.”

A waiter in a crisp white apron and a black vest approached the table, holding a small silver tray with a leather folio resting on it. He looked down his nose at Elias, clearly annoyed that a teenager in a thrift-store suit was occupying his prime real estate.

It was the perfect target.

Elias snatched the leather folio off the tray. He opened it, looking at the total.

$15.00 Espresso. $1.24 Tax. $2.43 Suggested Gratuity. Total: $18.67.

Elias didn’t just frown. He stood up, violently snapping the leather folio shut with a loud CRACK that made both Cindy and Charlize flinch and turn to look at him.

”This arithmetic is a profound insult to the science of economics,” Elias announced, his voice booming across the quiet, upscale café.

The waiter blinked, taking a step back. ”Sir?”

”Do not ’sir’ me while you are actively attempting to commit highway robbery,” Elias commanded, stepping into the waiter’s personal space, entirely ignoring the two highly lethal women standing inches away. ”Explain to me the logistical justification for an 8.25 percent municipal surcharge on a beverage composed of heated tap water and three grams of crushed beans.”

”It’s... it’s the Los Angeles County sales tax, sir,” the waiter stammered, looking around as other wealthy patrons began to stare.

”It is a misappropriation of funds!” Elias argued loudly, leaning over the table, his face a mask of absolute, sociopathic outrage. ”And furthermore, this ’Suggested Gratuity’ of fifteen percent. This is the most offensive line item on the entire document.”

Cindy Crawford stared at him, her mouth hanging slightly open. ”Elias, what are you doing?”

”I am fighting a systemic injustice, Cindy!” Elias shot back, waving the receipt in the air. He turned back to the terrified waiter. ”A tip is a voluntary transfer of wealth designed to subsidize your employer’s failure to provide an adequate living wage. I am a capitalist, not a charity! I refuse to enable a broken payroll structure by handing over my hard-earned liquid capital for the basic mechanical act of carrying a porcelain cup from the kitchen to this table!”

Charlize sweatdropped, physically burying her face in her hands. She knew he was cheap, but causing a scene over a three-dollar tip in front of one of the most famous women on the planet was a new level of insanity.

”Sir, please lower your voice,” the waiter begged, his face flushing dark red. ”If you don’t want to tip, that’s fine—”

”It is not fine! It is a moral imperative!” Elias continued, completely shameless, elevating his volume. ”You are complicit in your own exploitation! Demand equity! Demand a percentage of the gross espresso sales! Do not come to my table begging for table scraps!”

The sheer, unfiltered absurdity of a teenager in a cheap suit screaming about Marxist labor theories and corporate equity over a cup of coffee completely paralyzed the café.

Cindy and Charlize had entirely forgotten their feud. They were both staring at Elias in a state of profound, absolute bewilderment, united in their sheer horror.

Deep within Elias’s neural pathways, a glorious, mechanical choir began to sing.

Elias let out a long, silent exhale. His cheekbones were safe. The crisis was averted.

With a movement so sudden it gave the waiter whiplash, Elias stopped shouting. His posture instantly snapped back to impeccable, calm elegance. He reached into his pocket, pulled out exactly one ten-dollar bill and one five-dollar bill, and placed them delicately onto the silver tray.

Not a single cent more.

”Keep the change,” Elias said, his voice a smooth, deadpan whisper.

He turned to the two stunning women, who were still staring at him as if he had just sprouted wings.

”This is an unscheduled board meeting,” Elias declared, stepping between them. ”Cindy, this is Charlize, our Head of Agency Expansion. Charlize, this is Cindy, our Global Visual Asset. Now, please refrain from ruining my twelve-dollar jacket, I haven’t paid the dry-cleaning fee.”

Before either of them could formulate a coherent sentence, Elias grabbed both of their hands and physically forced them into a brief, highly awkward handshake.

”Corporate synergy,” Elias announced.

He didn’t wait for the explosion. He turned on his heel, bolted for the curb, and aggressively flagged down the most battered, exhaust-spewing yellow taxi cab currently driving down Rodeo Drive.

He dove into the backseat, slamming the door behind him.

”LAX. And step on it,” Elias ordered the driver.

As the taxi peeled away from the curb, Elias looked out the rear window. Cindy Crawford and Charlize Theron were standing side-by-side on the sidewalk, their hands still awkwardly clasped together, both of them sporting identical, massive sweatdrops as they watched him flee.

Elias settled back into the cracked vinyl seat of the taxi, a deeply satisfied smirk playing on his lips. He had survived the Alpha collision, protected his capital, and kept his face flawless.

As the digital clock on the taxi’s dashboard ticked over to midnight, the loan shark in his head delivered its final blow for the day.

Elias closed his eyes. The financial bleeding never stopped. It was time to find a new artery to tap.
