Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Plaza Arbitrage

The boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Calvin Klein corporate headquarters in Midtown Manhattan offered a panoramic, God’s-eye view of the city. Below, the yellow taxis looked like blood cells navigating the concrete arteries of a massive, indifferent machine.

Elias van Kempen sat at the polished mahogany table, his vintage leather jacket draped over the back of an obscenely expensive Herman Miller chair. He didn’t look out the window. He was entirely focused on the thick, meticulously bound contract resting in front of him.

He had done it.

He had walked into a closed casting call, entirely derailed the established muscle-bound, golden-boy aesthetic represented by Mark Wahlberg, and successfully forced the executives to pivot their entire Fall ’92 campaign toward his raw, Heroin Chic vibe.

”The terms are explicitly clear, Elias,” the Senior Account Executive said, leaning forward. He was a man named Richard, possessing the kind of slick, aggressive confidence that came from spending too much time in the Hamptons. ”Exclusive rights for the North American and European territories for six months. You are the face of the denim and the fragrance lines. We are committing a three-million-dollar ad buy to this push. Your principal talent fee is locked at one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.”

One hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

It was a staggering sum for a teenager with no formal representation. It was the kind of money that fundamentally altered trajectories.

Elias picked up the sleek corporate pen provided and signed the final page with an elegant, practiced flourish. He pushed the contract back across the table.

”I look forward to an exceptionally profitable quarter, Richard,” Elias said, his baritone voice smooth and terrifyingly mature.

”We shoot in three days, out in the Hamptons. The production team will handle the logistics,” Richard said, sliding the contract into a leather folio. He offered a tight, professional smile. ”Welcome to the Calvin Klein family.”

”Thank you,” Elias replied, remaining seated. He laced his long fingers together, resting them on the mahogany table. ”Now. Regarding the immediate operational capital.”

Richard frowned slightly, his professional smile slipping. ”Operational capital?”

”My per diem,” Elias clarified, his dark eyes locking onto the executive’s. ”I require a cash advance to cover my immediate subsistence and logistical expenses while waiting for the production schedule to initiate.”

”Ah. Right,” Richard nodded, though he looked slightly annoyed by the administrative request from his new, highly-paid star. He gestured to a junior accountant sitting silently at the end of the table. ”David, handle the kid’s per diem.”

The accountant, a nervous young man with thick glasses, opened a ledger. ”Of course. Mr. van Kempen, as per corporate policy for non-union, unrepresented talent operating in the New York hub, we do not issue physical cash advances. It creates a liability in our weekly audit cycle.”

Elias went perfectly still. A cold, suffocating dread began to coil in his empty stomach.

”No cash,” Elias repeated, his voice dangerously flat.

”Correct,” the accountant nodded eagerly, entirely oblivious to the predatory danger radiating from the teenager. ”Instead, we utilize a corporate scrip system. We have a standing account with The Plaza Hotel. I am authorizing a voucher for their VIP Aperitivo Buffet for this evening, valued at one hundred dollars. You simply present the voucher to the Maître D’. The production team will arrange your full catering on set starting Friday.”

The accountant slid a heavy, embossed paper voucher across the table.

Elias stared at the piece of paper.

He had just signed a contract for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. But because of the standard Net-60 payment cycle for commercial talent, that money wouldn’t exist in the physical world for two months.

And currently, his physical pockets were entirely, completely empty. He had spent his last hundred and fifty dollars on the red-eye flight to New York. His bank account in Los Angeles held over fifty thousand dollars, but in 1991, without a localized branch, an ATM card, or the ability to wire funds instantaneously, that money might as well be on the moon.

He was a paper millionaire, currently stranded in Manhattan, facing a genuine risk of starvation, and the multi-billion-dollar corporation he was saving had just handed him a food stamp.

Elias’s jaw clenched so tight the muscle visibly twitched. He cursed the structural rigidity of corporate accounting. He mentally cursed the loan shark in his head that would inevitably demand its fifty-dollar blood money tonight.

”A voucher,” Elias murmured, picking up the embossed paper. He forced a terrifyingly elegant, cold smile onto his face. ”Vouchers are the currency of barbarians, David. They are an illusion of value designed to restrict the velocity of capital. But... I will accept it.”

He stood up, grabbing his leather jacket.

”I’ll see you on Friday, Elias,” Richard called out, already turning back to his files.

Elias didn’t reply. He walked out of the boardroom, his mind instantly shifting from macro-economics to micro-survival.

I have one hundred dollars of non-transferable nutritional credit, Elias calculated coldly as he rode the elevator down to the lobby. I must maximize the caloric yield and extract a mathematical victory from their insulting corporate scrip.

The Plaza Hotel at 7:00 PM was a monument to old-world, opulent excess. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the marble floors. The air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, cigar smoke, and the quiet, powerful hum of Wall Street executives negotiating leverage over martinis.

Elias walked through the gilded revolving doors, his faded grunge aesthetic clashing violently with the black-tie atmosphere. He didn’t care. He was a man on a mission of pure, unadulterated caloric extortion.

He navigated the lobby, ignoring the judgmental stares of the wealthy patrons, and approached the entrance to the VIP Aperitivo Lounge.

A Maître D’ in a pristine tuxedo stepped into his path, his nose turning up slightly. ”Good evening, sir. The lounge is reserved for guests and corporate account holders.”

Elias didn’t say a word. He simply slapped the Calvin Klein voucher onto the podium with the aggressive, dismissive energy of a man paying a parking ticket.

The Maître D’ inspected the voucher, his sneer faltering. ”Ah. Yes. The Calvin Klein account. Right this way, sir.”

Elias was led to a small, velvet-lined booth in the corner of the lounge. He sat down, his dark eyes instantly locking onto the centerpiece of the room: the buffet.

It was a staggering display of culinary luxury. Massive silver platters overflowed with imported cheeses, artisan breads, and delicate pastries.

Carbohydrates, Elias analyzed with brutal, sociopathic disdain. Cheap filler. High volume, low production cost. Designed to satiate the patron before they consume the expensive inventory.

He stood up and walked toward the buffet. He completely bypassed the bread station. He ignored the beautifully arranged crudités and the imported Italian cheeses.

He headed straight for the protein.

Elias picked up a delicate, bone-china plate and approached the carving station. A chef in a tall white hat was slicing razor-thin pieces of Wagyu beef.

”I will take the entire flank,” Elias commanded, his baritone voice smooth and absolute.

The chef blinked. ”Excuse me, sir? I usually serve two slices—”

”I am not interested in your rationing protocols,” Elias interrupted, leveling a gaze of pure, freezing authority. ”Place the flank on the plate.”

The chef, intimidated by the sheer dominance of the teenager, reluctantly loaded a massive, steaming pile of premium beef onto Elias’s plate.

Elias didn’t stop. He moved to the seafood station. He bypassed the cheap shrimp cocktail and zeroed in on the Beluga caviar and the Scottish smoked salmon. With rapid, surgical precision, he piled an obscene amount of the expensive fish onto his plate, creating a towering, structurally unstable mountain of pure, high-cost protein.

He carried his haul back to the velvet booth and sat down.

He didn’t eat like a starving teenager. He ate with the slow, deliberate, elegant manners of a European aristocrat, savoring every single bite. But his mind was calculating the arbitrage.

Wagyu beef: approximately $40 per pound wholesale. Smoked salmon: $25. Beluga caviar: $80 per ounce, Elias tallied in his head, chewing methodically. The corporate voucher is valued at one hundred dollars. By my estimation, I have just consumed one hundred and forty-two dollars of raw inventory. The Plaza Hotel is currently operating at a forty-two dollar deficit on this transaction. A flawless victory.

For an hour, Elias sat in the booth, meticulously extracting his revenge against the Calvin Klein accounting department through sheer, unadulterated gluttony.

Finally, his stomach reached its absolute physical limit. He wiped his mouth with a linen napkin, leaned back against the velvet cushions, and let out a soft sigh of satisfaction. He had survived the illiquidity crisis.

It was time to leave.

Elias stood up, adjusting the collar of his leather jacket, and began walking toward the exit of the lounge.

”Excuse me, sir. Sir!”

Elias stopped. A waiter in a crisp white jacket was hurrying toward him, holding a small, silver tray. On the tray rested a piece of heavy cardstock.

”Your final folio, sir,” the waiter said politely, extending the tray.

Elias frowned. ”The transaction was settled. I provided a corporate voucher.”

”Yes, sir. The voucher covers the cost of the buffet access,” the waiter explained, offering an apologetic, yet firm smile. ”However, it does not cover the mandatory twenty-five percent hospitality surcharge and gratuity required for all VIP lounge patrons. Your remaining balance is twenty-five dollars.”

The world stopped spinning.

The jazz music in the background seemed to warp into a terrifying, dissonant screech.

Elias stared at the silver tray.

Twenty-five dollars.

He didn’t have twenty-five dollars. He didn’t have twenty-five cents. His liquid cash was entirely locked in a Los Angeles bank vault thousands of miles away.

Panic, genuine, horrifying panic, spiked in his chest. In his previous life, he had faced down hostile takeovers, contract lawsuits, and furious studio heads. But the terror of standing in the middle of The Plaza Hotel, unable to pay a twenty-five-dollar tip, triggered a primal, deeply humiliating fear.

If I cannot produce capital, they will call security. They will call the police, Elias realized, his mind racing at lightspeed. The police will contact Calvin Klein. The executives will realize I am completely insolvent. The illusion of Sovereign Media will shatter. They will leverage my poverty to break the contract.

He was trapped. It was the ultimate, comedic irony of the capitalist system. He had successfully stolen a hundred and forty dollars of caviar, only to be destroyed by the tip.

The waiter cleared his throat. ”Will that be cash or room charge, sir?”

Elias couldn’t activate a system skill. He had exactly 5 CP remaining. If he burned it on a persuasion skill, he would have zero defense for the rest of the week, and the system would likely penalize him for reaching a zero balance. He had to rely on pure, analog hustle.

”There appears to be a slight... logistical discrepancy,” Elias began, his voice maintaining its smooth, baritone register, though a microscopic bead of sweat formed on his hairline.

He frantically patted the pockets of his vintage leather jacket, pretending to search for a money clip he knew didn’t exist. His fingers brushed against something soft and silky in his inner pocket.

It was a heavy, woven silk tie. A deep, rich burgundy with subtle gold threading. It was a prop he had kept from a high-end editorial shoot in Milan during his previous life, a piece of genuine vintage Italian craftsmanship he had brought with him for the Calvin Klein audition just in case they demanded formalwear.

Value: approximately two hundred dollars, Elias calculated instantly.

It was a devastating loss of an asset, but the alternative was social execution.

With a smooth, elegant flourish, Elias pulled the silk tie from his pocket. He laid it gently across the silver tray, right on top of the bill.

”I am currently operating without physical currency due to an international routing delay,” Elias lied flawlessly, locking eyes with the bewildered waiter. ”However, that is a handmade, vintage Brioni silk tie. It retails for significantly more than twenty-five dollars. I suggest you accept it as a highly subsidized gratuity, sell it to a consignment shop in Soho tomorrow, and keep the massive profit margin for yourself.”

The waiter stared at the tie. He looked at Elias’s entirely serious, terrifyingly confident expression. ”Sir... I... we don’t accept clothing as payment.”

”You accept value,” Elias corrected, his tone dropping into a freezing, absolute command. ”And I just handed you a ninety percent return on your investment. Do we have an agreement, or do I need to explain the concept of appreciating assets to your manager?”

The waiter swallowed hard. He looked around the lounge, clearly terrified of causing a scene in front of the Wall Street executives. He quickly slid the tie off the tray and stuffed it into his apron pocket.

”Thank you, sir. Have a good evening,” the waiter mumbled, hurrying away before Elias could demand change.

Elias let out a slow, silent exhale. His heart was hammering against his ribs. It was the closest he had come to total ruin since waking up in Den Haag. He had survived, but his pathological cheapness was screaming in agony over the loss of the Brioni tie.

He needed to get out of the hotel before another hidden fee materialized.

He turned toward the exit, taking a deep, calming breath to restore his flawless aura of superiority.

As he walked past the buffet line, a primal, survival instinct flared up. He had secured his protein, but he was going to be in New York for three more days before the catering kicked in. He needed sustainable rations.

Without breaking his elegant stride, Elias subtly swiped two massive, perfectly baked butter croissants off a silver platter. He quickly, shamelessly shoved them into the deep side pockets of his vintage leather jacket.

”I suppose the industrial sabotage wasn’t enough.”

Elias froze.

The voice came from directly behind him. It was smooth, smoky, and laced with distinct, amused irony.

He slowly turned around.

Standing a few feet away, holding a crystal flute of champagne, was Cindy Crawford.

She looked absolutely stunning in a sleek, bias-cut silver gown that clung to her curves. She was the undisputed queen of the Runway Mafia, the woman who had watched him mentally destroy Mark Wahlberg that morning.

And she was currently staring directly at the bulging, flaky lump of stolen pastry protruding from Elias’s leather pocket.

Elias van Kempen, the man who had just out-negotiated a Fortune 500 company and successfully bartered a silk tie for a hotel tip, was completely, unequivocally caught red-handed stealing bread from a buffet.

For the first time since 1991, Elias’s brain genuinely stalled. A massive, comical sweatdrop visibly rolled down his temple.

Cindy took a sip of her champagne, her dark eyes dancing with genuine amusement. She didn’t look disgusted. She looked fascinated.

”You walked into a closed casting call this morning, demanded a principal contract, and insulted the biggest commercial star in the room,” Cindy noted, her voice low and intimate. ”And now you’re stealing carbohydrates from The Plaza. I have to ask, Elias... is this some kind of avant-garde performance art, or are you genuinely out of your mind?”

Elias’s sociopathic survival instincts finally rebooted. He couldn’t act embarrassed. Embarrassment was weakness. He had to own the absurdity.

He stood up perfectly straight, adjusting his jacket to slightly conceal the bulging pockets. He met her gaze with absolute, unbothered confidence.

”I am not stealing, Cindy,” Elias said smoothly, his baritone voice lacking a single tremor of guilt. ”I am engaging in a silent protest against the tragic inefficiencies of commercial agriculture. The amount of butter wasted in this hotel alone is an economic crime. I am simply... rescuing these croissants from their inevitable demise in a garbage bin.”

Cindy stared at him for a second. Then, she threw her head back and let out a loud, genuine laugh that turned the heads of several executives nearby.

”A silent protest,” she repeated, shaking her head. ”You are completely unbelievable.”

”I am pragmatic,” Elias corrected gently.

He looked at her, truly looking at her for the first time without the lens of a business transaction. She was radiant, powerful, and surrounded by an ecosystem of wealth that expected everyone to bow. But Elias didn’t bow. He didn’t flatter her. He treated her like an equal, and that was exactly why she was talking to him.

”You’re full of surprises, Elias,” Cindy said, her smile fading into a look of quiet, intense curiosity. ”You don’t play the game like the other boys. I’m trying to figure out what your angle is.”

”My angle is survival, Cindy,” Elias said softly, the raw truth bleeding through the arrogant mask for just a fraction of a second.

Before the tension could escalate into something dangerously real, a frantic voice called out from the lobby.

”Cindy! There you are!”

A man in a sharp suit—clearly her publicist or agent—jogged over, looking stressed. ”The executives from Revlon are waiting in the private dining room. We need to go. They’re getting restless.”

Cindy’s expression immediately hardened. The genuine amusement vanished, replaced by the tired, polite mask of a global icon about to clock in for another grueling shift of corporate networking.

”Right. Of course,” Cindy sighed, turning away from Elias. ”Duty calls.”

Elias watched her go. He saw the subtle droop in her shoulders, the invisible weight of the Runway Mafia crown pressing down on her. She was a multi-millionaire, but in this moment, she looked just as trapped as Charlize had been in that strip-mall agency.

Elias didn’t want to save her. He didn’t care about being a hero.

But he recognized a wildly undervalued opportunity to establish dominance over the most powerful faction in the industry.

”Cindy.”

She stopped and turned back, raising an eyebrow.

Elias stepped forward, his dark eyes locking onto hers. He didn’t use a system skill. He used the pure, unfiltered audacity of a man with two stolen croissants in his pockets.

”Corporate dinners will slowly murder your soul,” Elias stated, his voice a low, magnetic hum. ”They will force you to eat tiny portions of overpriced fish while men in suits talk at you for three hours.”

Cindy’s agent scowled. ”Excuse me, who is this kid?”

Elias ignored him entirely. ”Skip the dinner.”

Cindy blinked, genuinely shocked. ”Skip a meeting with Revlon? Are you crazy? They’re offering a multi-million-dollar contract!”

”They are offering to buy your time. Don’t sell it to them tonight,” Elias challenged, a dangerous, intoxicating smirk playing on his lips. ”Walk out of those doors with me. I will show you the real city. Not the sanitized, corporate illusion they keep you trapped in.”

Cindy stared at the boy. It was the most ridiculous, unprofessional, and exhilarating proposition she had heard in years. No one ever told her to walk away from money. Everyone in her life was a parasite, feeding off her success. But Elias... Elias was an anomaly. He was a starving predator offering her a taste of rebellion.

She looked at her frantic agent. She looked at the private dining room doors.

Then, she looked back at Elias.

A slow, rebellious smile spread across her face.

”If we get caught, I’m blaming you,” Cindy said, stepping past her terrified agent and walking toward the exit.

Elias fell into step beside her, his long stride matching hers.

”I am accustomed to taking the blame,” Elias murmured smoothly.

As they walked out into the cool New York night, leaving the opulent safety of The Plaza Hotel behind, a sound echoed in Elias’s skull.

[CHA-CHING!] [SYSTEM WARNING: SCHEDULED DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE DUE.] [DEDUCTING -$50.00 USD FROM LIQUID CASH RESERVE.]

Elias winced slightly, a flash of genuine pain crossing his face as fifty dollars evaporated from his Los Angeles bank account.

”Are you alright?” Cindy asked, noticing his sudden grimace. ”Are you cold?”

Elias looked at the beautiful supermodel, shivering slightly in her thin silver gown in the brisk night air. He looked at his own thin t-shirt.

He engaged his absolute, sociopathic shamelessness.

”The night air is surprisingly aggressive,” Elias said smoothly, completely deadpan. ”I don’t suppose I could borrow your scarf to mitigate the thermal loss?”

Cindy stopped walking. She stared at him, utterly bewildered. He had just convinced her to ditch a massive corporate dinner, and his first move was to try and steal her clothing because he was too cheap to buy a jacket.

She let out a loud, ringing laugh that echoed down Fifth Avenue.

”You,” Cindy said, shaking her head as she unwrapped a sheer silk scarf from her neck and handed it to him, ”are going to be a very interesting mistake.”
