Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Calvin Klein Hijack

The California morning broke over The Pelican Motel, casting long, harsh shadows across the cracked concrete of the parking lot. Inside Room 104, the atmosphere was less ’Hollywood rising star’ and more ’Wall Street bunker.’

Elias van Kempen sat at the wobbly laminate desk, his long legs crossed at the ankles. He was staring at a spiral-bound notebook filled with neat, aggressive rows of numbers. His brow was furrowed in a slight, highly unusual expression of active annoyance.

Charlize Theron, draped across the lumpy mattress with an open script of Children of the Corn III resting on her stomach, noticed the shift in his demeanor.

”You’re doing that thing again,” Charlize drawled, not looking up from her pages. ”The thing where you look like you’re mentally foreclosing on an orphanage.”

”I am currently foreclosing on our immediate liquidity, Charlize,” Elias muttered, tapping the cheap ballpoint pen against the paper. ”The mechanical royalties from ’Creep’ are accumulating at an astonishing rate, and the backend sync points from Reservoir Dogs are legally locked. On paper, Sovereign Media is currently valued in the multi-millions.”

”I sense a ’but’ approaching that is going to make me very angry,” she sighed, flipping a page.

”But,” Elias confirmed smoothly, his dark eyes never leaving the ledger, ”Hollywood Accounting and terrestrial music syndication operate on a Net-90 disbursement cycle. That means the massive influx of capital we have technically earned will not physically enter our checking account for another eighty-seven days.”

Elias closed the notebook with a sharp snap.

”In the meantime, the operational overhead of simply existing—”

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias didn’t flinch as the invisible cash register rang in his cerebral cortex, mocking him.

”—continues to drain my liquid reserves daily,” Elias finished, his voice a low, lethal purr. ”I refuse to pay the predatory interest rates of a bridge loan. Therefore, I must execute a rapid cash extraction.”

Charlize finally put the script down, her interest piqued. ”Extraction? From who?”

”New York,” Elias stated, standing up and grabbing his vintage leather jacket. ”The fashion calendar waits for no man’s Net-90 cycle. It is currently Fashion Week. The major houses are finalizing their principal campaigns for the upcoming season. They have massive marketing budgets actively burning holes in their silk pockets. I am going to relieve them of that burden.”

”New York?” Charlize raised an eyebrow. ”Elias, those casting calls are hermetically sealed by the major agencies. You don’t have representation there. You can’t just walk into a Calvin Klein audition off the street.”

Elias offered a slow, impossibly confident smirk. ”I don’t walk off the street, Charlize. I descend from a highly uncomfortable altitude.”

Fourteen hours later, Elias found himself trapped in the middle seat of a Boeing 737 on a red-eye flight from LAX to JFK.

The seat pitch was agonizing. The man to his left was snoring loudly, emitting a faint aroma of stale beer, while the woman to his right was aggressively elbowing him as she struggled with a crossword puzzle.

It was a physical nightmare. It was a complete degradation of human dignity.

It had also cost him exactly one hundred and fifty dollars, which was four hundred dollars cheaper than a comfortable daytime flight.

Elias didn’t sleep. He sat perfectly still, his eyes closed, mentally visualizing the topography of the Manhattan fashion district. He reviewed the historical data provided by his future memory. He knew exactly what Calvin Klein was looking for in 1992. They were desperate to transition away from the stiff, formal aesthetics of the 1980s. They wanted edge. They wanted youth. They wanted a cultural reset that would sell underwear to an entire generation of teenagers.

They were currently looking at muscular, traditional male models. They were looking at the past.

Elias was going to sell them the future.

The flight landed in New York at 6:00 AM. Elias bypassed baggage claim, having brought nothing but the clothes on his back and his scuffed leather duffel bag. He took the subway into Manhattan, emerging into the biting chill of an East Coast February morning.

He didn’t bother changing or trying to look fresh. The red-eye flight had done exactly what he wanted it to do. It had hollowed out his cheekbones, deepened the dark circles under his exotic eyes, and added a layer of gritty, authentic exhaustion to his posture.

He looked like a beautiful, dangerous vampire who had just spent three days awake in an underground grunge club.

He looked like Heroin Chic.

The casting for the Calvin Klein underwear campaign was being held in a massive, whitewashed loft in Chelsea. As Elias approached the building, he noted the line of perfectly groomed, muscular male models spilling out onto the sidewalk, clutching their glossy portfolios. They all looked like variations of the same Greek statue—healthy, tanned, and desperately eager to please.

Elias bypassed the line entirely.

He walked up to the side entrance, usually reserved for the catering crew and production assistants. An exhausted-looking security guard was leaning against the brick wall, smoking a cigarette.

”Hey, pal. Main entrance is around front,” the guard grunted, exhaling a cloud of smoke.

Elias didn’t stop walking. He didn’t even look at the guard. He simply projected an aura of absolute, arrogant belonging.

”I am aware of the geography of the building,” Elias said, his baritone voice smooth and utterly dismissive. ”I am late for a consultation with the creative director, and I have absolutely no patience for the front desk bureaucracy today.”

He walked right past the guard, moving with the fluid, unhurried grace of a man who owned the building. The guard, entirely bewildered by the sheer audacity and the intimidating aesthetic of the teenager, didn’t even try to stop him.

Elias navigated the labyrinth of the loft, following the thumping baseline of house music that was standard issue for any 90s casting call.

He pushed open a set of heavy double doors and stepped into the main studio.

The room was blindingly bright, dominated by a massive white cyclorama wall. Racks of designer clothing lined the perimeter, guarded by frantic stylists. In the center of the room, a panel of five people sat behind a long folding table, evaluating the talent.

Elias’s eyes instantly locked onto the panel. He recognized the casting director, a sharp-featured woman from a major New York agency. He recognized the Calvin Klein brand executives.

But it was the woman sitting at the far end of the table that drew the entire gravitational pull of the room.

Cindy Crawford.

She was at the absolute, untouchable zenith of her career. She was the defining face of the Runway Mafia, a supermodel whose fame transcended fashion and permeated global pop culture. She was sitting there, looking impossibly glamorous in a simple black turtleneck, her iconic mole instantly recognizable. She was present as a brand consultant, evaluating the men who might potentially share a billboard with her.

And currently standing in front of that panel, dominating the white backdrop, was a young man radiating pure, insecure aggression.

Mark Wahlberg. Marky Mark.

He was shirtless, wearing only a pair of white Calvin Klein briefs and his trademark sagging baggy jeans. His physique was undeniably impressive—a solid wall of heavily muscled, gym-sculpted perfection. He was posing aggressively, flexing his abs, grabbing his crotch, and projecting the persona of a tough, street-smart bad boy.

”Yeah, that’s the look right there,” Marky Mark sneered confidently, hitting a double bicep pose for the panel. ”I’m bringing the streets to the runway. That’s what the kids want. They want muscle. They want dominance.”

The casting director looked impressed. The brand executives were nodding. Cindy Crawford, however, looked incredibly bored, resting her chin on her hand as she watched the display of sheer testosterone.

Elias stood by the heavy double doors. He observed the scene with the clinical detachment of a predator watching a peacock fan its feathers.

He is selling labor, Elias thought coldly. He is selling the aesthetics of a dockworker.

It was time to take the room.

[SYSTEM SHOP ACCESSED.][ACTIVATING: AURA PLAYBOY ALPHA (DURATION: 15 MINUTES)][COST: -5 CP][CURRENT BALANCE: 5 CP]

[CHA-CHING!]

The activation didn’t produce a flash of light. It produced a sudden, suffocating drop in the atmospheric pressure of the loft.

Elias stepped forward, his boots clicking softly against the concrete floor.

He didn’t take off his vintage leather jacket. He didn’t unbutton his shirt. He simply walked toward the white cyclorama wall with the slow, devastating confidence of a man who already owned every camera in the room.

The Aura Playboy Alpha hit the studio like a physical shockwave. It wasn’t just about being handsome; it was about an overwhelming, magnetic dominance that immediately made every other male in the vicinity feel profoundly, inexplicably insecure.

The frantic stylists stopped moving. The casting director stopped writing.

Cindy Crawford slowly lifted her chin off her hand, her dark eyes locking onto Elias. The boredom vanished from her face, replaced by a sudden, sharp spark of genuine intrigue. She had seen thousands of beautiful men, but she had never seen one who looked so utterly exhausted and yet so completely dangerous.

Elias stopped a few feet away from Mark Wahlberg.

Marky Mark felt the shift in the room’s attention instantly. His aggressive swagger faltered. He looked at Elias, taking in the pale skin, the dark circles, the impossibly sharp jawline, and the slender, aristocratic build.

”Who the hell are you?” Mark snapped, his Boston accent thick with sudden defensive hostility. He puffed out his massive chest, trying to physically dominate the space. ”This is a closed casting, string bean. We’re doing an underwear shoot here. You look like you haven’t eaten a carb since 1989. You lost?”

The room went dead silent. The tension was palpable. The executives held their breath, expecting the skinny teenager to wilt under the aggression of the muscular rapper.

Elias didn’t flinch. He didn’t get angry. He simply tilted his head, his dark, exotic eyes scanning Mark’s heavily muscled physique with the detached amusement of an art critic evaluating a very ugly painting.

Elias offered a slow, predatory smile.

”Your musculature is truly impressive, Mark,” Elias said, his baritone voice a smooth, lethal purr that carried effortlessly across the silent loft. ”It is perfectly optimized for manual labor. I imagine you would be highly effective at moving heavy furniture or unloading cargo from a shipping vessel.”

Mark’s jaw dropped. A massive, highly visible sweatdrop formed on his forehead. ”What did you just say to me?”

”However,” Elias continued smoothly, turning his gaze away from Mark and looking directly at the panel of executives, his Aura pinning them to their chairs. ”Calvin Klein is not in the business of selling manual labor. Calvin Klein is in the business of selling fantasy. You are trying to sell them a high-school gym class aesthetic when the culture is actively shifting toward a profound, aristocratic apathy.”

Elias took one step forward, placing himself directly in the center of the white backdrop, effectively eclipsing Mark Wahlberg.

He slouched slightly, his hands deep in the pockets of his vintage leather jacket, his posture radiating that devastating, Heroin Chic exhaustion.

”The youth market does not want to look like they spend five hours a day lifting heavy metal objects in a sweaty room,” Elias lectured the executives, his voice a hypnotic current of capitalist logic. ”They want to look like they are naturally, effortlessly superior. They want to look like they just woke up from a three-day party in a loft in Soho and simply forgot to button their shirts.”

Elias finally turned his dark, mesmerizing eyes toward Cindy Crawford.

He didn’t try to charm her. He didn’t try to act starstruck. He looked at the legendary supermodel with the gaze of an absolute equal.

”Isn’t that right, Cindy?” Elias murmured, a dangerous, intimate challenge in his voice. ”Muscle is cheap. Apathy is expensive.”

Cindy Crawford stared at him. The Aura Playboy Alpha was washing over her, but it wasn’t just the system-generated charisma that captured her attention. It was the sheer, sociopathic audacity of what he had just done. He had walked into a closed room, completely ignored the industry protocols, mathematically deconstructed a massive pop star, and hijacked the entire narrative of the casting call without even taking off his jacket.

It was shameless. It was brilliant. It was intoxicating.

A slow, genuinely fascinated smile touched the corners of Cindy’s lips.

”He has a point,” Cindy stated softly, her voice carrying the absolute weight of the Runway Mafia. She looked at the casting director. ”The muscle thing feels... pedestrian. This kid feels like the cover of a magazine we haven’t printed yet.”

Mark Wahlberg turned dark red, his ego completely shattered by the casual dismissal from the queen of fashion. He opened his mouth to scream a profanity, his fists clenching, but the sheer humiliation of the moment choked the words in his throat. He had been conceptually castrated in front of the entire room.

The casting director, sensing the shift in the tectonic plates of the industry, scrambled to find a blank casting sheet.

”What... what is your name?” the casting director asked, her voice slightly breathless.

”Elias,” he answered smoothly. ”Sovereign Media.”

”Do you have a comp card, Elias? Do you have your book?”

”I don’t carry a book,” Elias lied flawlessly, knowing his cheap European tear-sheets would only devalue his current aesthetic. ”I carry a vision. And if you are interested in acquiring it, my day rate is non-negotiable, and I require a volume-based equity share on the international retail distribution.”

The Calvin Klein executives exchanged panicked, thrilled glances. They didn’t understand half of the financial terms Elias had just used, but they recognized power when they saw it.

Elias stood in the center of the white room, the undisputed alpha of the concrete jungle. He had spent his last dime to get here, his system was bleeding his liquid cash dry, and he was currently extorting one of the biggest fashion houses on earth.

He was hungry, he was shameless, and he was about to get paid.
