Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Double-Dip Monopoly

The delayed fuse of the Muzak hack took exactly seven days to reach the powder keg.

It started as a ripple. A handful of teenagers in a suburban mall in Ohio stopped mid-bite in the food court, their heads tilting toward the ceiling speakers. Then it happened in a Gap in New Jersey. Then a record store in Austin.

By day four, local radio stations across the country were fielding confused phone calls from kids describing a slow, gritty rock song with a thrumming bassline and a voice that sounded like a beautiful, broken angel. The DJs, reliant on the tightly controlled promo cassettes sent by the major labels, had no idea what they were talking about.

By day seven, the ripple had become a tsunami. Bootleg recordings—held up to mall speakers by desperate teenagers with handheld tape recorders—were circulating in high schools. The demand was organic, rabid, and completely outside the control of the established industry machine.

Elias van Kempen sat in his cramped room at The Pelican Motel, the heavy plastic receiver of the rotary phone pressed against his ear. Outside, the Los Angeles sun was baking the concrete, but inside, the air was icy with tension.

On the other end of the line, Jimmy Iovine was screaming.

”Do you have any idea what you’ve done, you psychotic little shit?!” Jimmy bellowed, the East Coast accent thickening with pure rage. ”I have programming directors from Z100 in New York to KROQ in L.A. screaming at my A&R guys, demanding a promo single that I don’t fucking own! You bypassed the entire terrestrial network! You put a rock track on the goddamn elevator channel!”

Elias leaned back against the cheap floral wallpaper, stretching his long legs out. He took a slow, deliberate sip from a paper cup of lukewarm tap water.

”I am currently eating lunch, Jimmy,” Elias replied smoothly, his baritone voice a dark, velvet purr. ”Monopoly makes me hungry. If you called to discuss my dietary habits, I’m afraid I only have time for a brief consultation.”

”Don’t give me that arrogant bullshit, van Kempen!” Jimmy snarled. The sound of something heavy being thrown against a wall echoed over the phone line. ”You think you’ve won? You think a mall stunt makes you a mogul? The labels control the distribution. We control the retail shelf space. Your little viral tape is going to burn out in a week because kids can’t buy what isn’t in the stores.”

Elias chuckled, a low, genuinely amused sound that clearly infuriated the executive even more.

”You are thinking linearly, Jimmy,” Elias lectured, shaking his head slightly. ”You are thinking like a record executive trying to sell a piece of plastic. I am not selling plastic. I am selling an asset. And right now, the demand for my asset is exponentially exceeding the supply. I suggest you focus on your own portfolio. Have a pleasant afternoon.”

Elias hung up the phone before Jimmy could scream another curse word.

He looked across the room. Paul Rudd was staring at him, wide-eyed, a piece of generic white bread hanging limply from his hand.

”Was that... was that the head of Interscope Records?” Paul whispered, looking terrified. ”Did you just hang up on a multi-millionaire?”

”I terminated an unproductive conversation,” Elias corrected, grabbing his vintage leather jacket from the bed. ”And we are leaving. I have a meeting.”

”A meeting? With who? You just declared war on the entire music industry!”

”I am diversifying our portfolio, Paul,” Elias said, checking his reflection in the smudged mirror. The dark circles under his eyes only added to his dangerous, Heroin Chic aesthetic. ”I am going to meet a man who is currently bleeding to death, and I am going to sell him a bandage.”

Twenty minutes later, Elias walked into a dimly lit, grease-stained diner in West Hollywood. It was the kind of place that smelled permanently of old coffee and desperation.

Sitting in a booth in the back, hunched over a towering stack of storyboards and legal pads, was a man in his late twenties. He had a prominent jaw, wild, thinning hair, and the frantic, manic energy of a cornered animal.

Quentin Tarantino.

Elias knew from his future memories that Quentin was currently in the final, agonizing stages of editing his independent debut, Reservoir Dogs. The film was brilliant, brutal, and entirely out of money.

Elias slid into the booth across from him.

Quentin jerked his head up, his eyes bloodshot and wide. He recognized Elias instantly. Elias had secured a minor, non-speaking role as one of the background gangsters in the film weeks ago, entirely by bypassing the casting director and intimidating the producers with his aura.

”Elias,” Quentin said, speaking at a rapid, almost incomprehensible clip. ”Hey. Good to see you, man. Listen, the edit is locked. Mostly. I mean, the cut is brilliant, it’s visceral, it’s seventys pulp mixed with French New Wave, but I’m dying here, man. I am literally dying. I need a song. I need a specific, iconic song for the ear scene, and EMI wants fifty grand for the rights. Fifty grand! I don’t have fifty bucks!”

Quentin buried his face in his hands, a picture of pure, artistic despair. ”If I don’t get the right track, the scene falls flat. The juxtaposition of violence and melody is ruined. The whole movie falls apart.”

Elias watched the director melt down with the clinical detachment of a scientist observing a rat in a maze. He waved a tired-looking waitress over.

”Two black coffees, please,” Elias ordered smoothly. ”The cheapest blend you have.”

He turned his attention back to Quentin. He didn’t offer sympathy. He offered a solution.

”Quentin,” Elias began, his voice a slow, calming anchor in the storm of the director’s panic. ”You are an artist. You are currently suffocating under the weight of corporate extortion. EMI does not care about your vision. They care about their quarterly margins.”

Quentin looked up, his eyes shining with desperate gratitude. ”Exactly! They’re bloodsuckers! They don’t understand cinema!”

Elias reached into the inner pocket of his leather jacket and slowly withdrew the black cassette tape. He placed it gently on the sticky Formica table, pushing it across the divide.

”I understand cinema, Quentin,” Elias lied flawlessly. ”And I have exactly what you need. A track that is dark, magnetic, and completely unreleased. It is an original composition. I hold the sole master.”

Quentin stared at the tape as if it were a holy relic. ”You wrote a song? Is it good?”

”It is currently causing a minor riot in the terrestrial radio market because I refuse to sell the rights to Interscope,” Elias said, projecting absolute arrogance. ”Listen to it in your edit bay. Play it over your footage. If it fits your vision, it is yours.”

Quentin practically grabbed the tape, his hands shaking. ”How much? Elias, I told you, I’m broke. The producers are tapped out. I can’t offer you fifty grand.”

Elias offered a warm, magnanimous smile. It was the smile of a sociopath closing a trap.

”I am not a corporate bloodsucker, Quentin,” Elias said softly. ”I believe in your film. I am giving you the synchronization rights to this track for the opening credits and the core thematic scenes for exactly zero dollars upfront.”

Quentin’s jaw dropped. A massive, comical sweatdrop formed on his forehead. He looked at Elias as if the teenager had just descended from heaven with a halo of pure, indie-film salvation.

”Zero dollars?” Quentin whispered, his voice cracking. ”Are you serious? You’re giving me the song for free? Elias... man, you’re a savior. You’re a saint. I’ll put your name in the opening credits right next to Harvey Keitel’s.”

”I am a patron of the arts,” Elias murmured modestly.

The waitress returned, placing two chipped mugs of black coffee on the table. Elias handed her three crumpled dollar bills, mentally calculating the agonizing drain on his liquid cash.

”However,” Elias continued, his tone shifting slightly. The warmth vanished, replaced by the chilling, metallic precision of a corporate lawyer. ”There is, of course, standard administrative paperwork to finalize the integration.”

Elias reached into his duffel bag and pulled out a manila folder. He didn’t just pull out a contract. He pulled out a document that looked like a small phone book. It landed on the table with a heavy, intimidating thud.

Quentin blinked, staring at the massive stack of paper. ”Uh... what is this?”

”Standard indemnification and licensing agreements,” Elias lied effortlessly. He flipped the document open, bypassing the first fifty pages of dense, incomprehensible legalese, and pointed a long, elegant finger at the signature lines on the final page.

Quentin squinted at the text. He was a cinematic genius, but he was entirely, hopelessly illiterate when it came to financial law. He saw words like perpetuity, backend gross, and exclusive sub-licensing, and his brain simply shut down.

”It looks... complicated,” Quentin muttered, rubbing his eyes.

”It is merely a formality to protect your film from future litigation,” Elias assured him smoothly, handing Quentin a pen. ”The core structure is simple. You pay me nothing today. I retain one hundred percent of the Master Rights. I retain one hundred percent of the Publishing Rights. And, as compensation for waiving my upfront fee, Sovereign Media secures an exclusive, tiered Backend Sync Royalty on all future secondary market distributions of the film.”

Quentin nodded slowly, desperate to get back to the editing room with his new prize. ”Right. Backend. So, if the movie makes money later, you get a cut of the soundtrack sales.”

Elias didn’t correct him. He didn’t explain that the contract he had drafted on a public library computer was a masterpiece of legal extortion.

If Quentin signed the paper, Elias wasn’t just getting a cut of the soundtrack album.

The Double-Dip Monopoly was far more ruthless.

Elias was locking in the rights to charge the studio a royalty every single time the movie was broadcast on television, released on VHS, sold on DVD, or licensed internationally. He was essentially taxing the film’s existence in perpetuity. He was using a broke director’s desperation to secure a pipeline that would generate millions of dollars for decades.

It was shameless. It was brutal. And it was entirely legal.

”Exactly,” Elias smiled, pointing the pen at the dotted line. ”Just a minor percentage on the backend. To support independent art.”

Quentin grabbed the pen. He didn’t read the clauses. He didn’t hire a lawyer to review the document. He was an artist blinded by his own vision, completely oblivious to the capitalist shark sitting across from him.

He signed his name with a messy, frantic scrawl.

Elias pulled the contract back immediately, slipping it safely into the manila folder. He had just secured the soundtrack to a film that would become a global cult phenomenon, and he had forced the studio to pay him for the privilege of advertising his song.

”Thank you, Quentin,” Elias said, standing up from the booth. ”I look forward to seeing the final cut.”

”You saved me, man,” Quentin gushed, clutching the cassette tape to his chest. ”I won’t forget this. You’re a true friend of cinema.”

”I am a friend of compound interest,” Elias muttered under his breath as he turned and walked out of the diner.

Outside, the metallic chime echoed in his skull.

Elias checked his portfolio. His CP had recovered to a comfortable 20. His liquid cash was still dangerously low for a man trying to build an empire, but his asset sheet was becoming terrifyingly robust.

He walked down the sun-drenched street of West Hollywood, pulling a pair of cheap sunglasses from his pocket. Jimmy Iovine thought he controlled the music industry. The major labels thought they controlled the distribution.

They were all playing checkers, and Elias had just bought the board.
