Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Controlled Leak Hack

The morning sun bled through the cracked, nicotine-stained blinds of Room 104 at The Pelican Motel, illuminating the floating dust motes that danced in the stagnant air.

Elias van Kempen lay on the thin, sagging mattress, his hands folded neatly over his chest, staring at the water-damaged ceiling. To the outside world, he was the enigmatic, brooding face of the upcoming Calvin Klein global campaign. To the MTV generation, he was the aristocratic lunatic who had hijacked national television to perform a poultry dance. He was arguably the most famous unknown teenager in America.

And yet, his stomach let out a hollow, echoing groan that resonated in the quiet room.

Before he could even contemplate the tragedy of his physical hunger, the digital loan shark resting in his cerebral cortex violently woke up.

Elias squeezed his eyes shut, a sharp, ragged exhale escaping his lips. The phantom pain in his gut flared as fifty physical dollars evaporated from his Los Angeles bank vault. He didn’t need to check his ledger to know the exact, miserable state of his finances. After the flights, the bribes, the faxes, and the system’s daily extortion, he was bleeding capital. The Net-60 waiting period on his modeling contracts was a financial desert, and he was currently dying of thirst.

He sat up, swinging his long legs over the side of the bed.

Across the room, Paul Rudd was asleep on the floor, wrapped in a questionable motel blanket, snoring softly. Charlize Theron was already awake, sitting cross-legged on the only functional armchair, methodically eating dry, generic-brand cornflakes straight out of the cardboard box.

She looked at Elias, noting the tight clench of his jaw.

”The system?” Charlize asked softly, raising a perfectly sculpted eyebrow.

”It is a relentless parasite,” Elias murmured, standing up and stretching his broad shoulders. He walked over to the small, grimy mirror above the sink and stared at his reflection. His face was flawless, exotic, and currently worth millions in delayed invoices.

”Fame is a logistical nightmare,” Elias declared, turning back to the room. He kicked Paul’s foot. ”Paul. Wake up. We have a severe liquidity crisis, and we are going to exploit my face to resolve it.”

Paul jolted awake, tangled in his blanket, his curly hair sticking up in every direction. ”What? Who’s exploiting who? Are the feds here?”

”Get dressed,” Elias ordered smoothly, grabbing his vintage leather jacket. ”We are going to execute a paparazzi monopoly.”

Ten minutes later, they were standing inside a neon-lit, slightly sticky Hollywood convenience store.

Elias walked up to the counter, his eyes scanning the display rack behind the cashier. He pointed a long, elegant finger at a bright yellow box.

”One Kodak disposable camera, thirty-nine exposures,” Elias said, his voice a low, commanding baritone.

He pulled out a crumpled five-dollar bill—one of his very last physical notes—and placed it on the counter. The cashier handed him the plastic camera and fifty cents in change.

They stepped back out into the blistering Los Angeles morning sun.

Elias turned and immediately shoved the cheap, plastic camera into Paul’s chest.

”Congratulations, Paul,” Elias smiled, a slow, entirely predatory expression spreading across his face. ”You are now a freelance photojournalist. Your moral compass has been temporarily suspended.”

Paul stared at the yellow plastic box in his hands, absolute horror washing over his features. ”A paparazzi? Elias, no! I’m an actor! I’m an artist! I can’t stalk people for a living! It’s sleazy! It’s... wait, who are we stalking?”

”Me,” Elias replied effortlessly.

Paul blinked, the horror shifting into profound confusion. A massive, highly visible sweatdrop rolled down his temple. Charlize, standing a few feet away, covered her mouth to stifle a sharp laugh.

”Fame without liquidity is mere vanity, Paul,” Elias explained, stepping into the shade of a particularly grimy alleyway just off Hollywood Boulevard. ”Right now, every tabloid editor from The National Enquirer to Us Weekly is looking for a candid photograph of the ’Levi’s Mystery Guy’ and the ’MTV Chicken Dancer’. If actual paparazzi find me, they will sell my image for thousands of dollars, and I will receive nothing. If they are going to monetize my facial structure, I might as well monopolize the distribution.”

Paul stared at him, his brain completely short-circuiting. ”You... you want me to take fake candid photos of you, and then sell them to the tabloids? Elias, that’s fraud! That’s mail fraud! Wire fraud! Photographic fraud!”

”It is not fraud, Paul. It is a controlled leak,” Elias corrected smoothly, leaning against a graffiti-covered brick wall. He pulled a half-empty, cold styrofoam cup of coffee from a nearby trash can and held it casually in his hand as a prop. ”I am the majority shareholder of my own image. Selling it is my absolute prerogative. Now, step back behind that dumpster. You are standing too close. It doesn’t look illegal enough.”

Paul whimpered, shuffling backward until he was practically pressed against a rusty, overflowing dumpster.

”Perfect,” Elias commanded, his tone shifting into the meticulous, demanding cadence of a high-fashion art director. ”Now, Paul, get lower. Take the angle from below the rim of the trash can. Make sure my jawline catches the morning sunlight, but tilt the camera slightly on a Dutch angle so it appears as though you are taking the photograph while running away in fear.”

Paul let out a pathetic groan, crouching down in the garbage, lifting the cheap plastic camera to his eye. ”This is the lowest point of my career. I’m taking pictures of a teenager from behind a dumpster.”

”Your career hasn’t started yet, Paul. Consider this an internship in media manipulation,” Elias shot back.

He needed these photos to look accidental, but he also needed them to look expensive enough to command a premium cash payout. A cheap Kodak camera wasn’t going to capture his God-Tier aesthetic properly.

He needed to invest to see a return.

[CHA-CHING!]

The air in the dirty Hollywood alleyway seemed to subtly, fundamentally shift. To Paul and Charlize, the morning smog suddenly looked like expensive, atmospheric studio smoke. The harsh California sunlight filtering through the chain-link fence above didn’t just illuminate Elias; it practically worshipped him.

Elias didn’t smile. He looked down at the dirty pavement, projecting an aura of profound, brooding exhaustion. He looked exactly like a tragic, beautiful young icon overwhelmed by the sudden weight of global fame, trying to hide in a filthy alley. It was a masterpiece of emotional manipulation.

”Shoot, Paul,” Elias ordered, not breaking his brooding stare at the pavement.

Click. The cheap shutter snapped.

”Good. Now, I am going to walk past you. Act like you just ambushed me,” Elias instructed, taking a slow, long-legged stride forward, pulling his leather jacket tighter around himself in a classic ’leave me alone’ defensive posture.

Paul clicked the camera again. Click. Click.

Charlize leaned against the brick wall across the alley, still eating her dry cereal, shaking her head in sheer disbelief. ”You are an absolute monster, Elias. You look like a tortured poet, but I know for a fact you’re just angry about a fifty-dollar surcharge.”

”Grief and financial panic photograph very similarly, Charlize,” Elias replied, flashing a brief, highly charismatic smirk before returning to his tortured expression. ”Paul! Stop breathing so loudly, it’s ruining the composition! Two more shots, make them blurry!”

Fifteen minutes later, the roll of thirty-nine exposures was full.

Elias stepped out of the cinematic filter, the alleyway returning to its normal, depressing reality. He walked over to Paul, who was sweating and brushing dirt off his knees.

”Flawless execution,” Elias praised, taking the camera. He handed it back to Paul along with a pair of cheap, oversized sunglasses he had pulled from his duffel bag.

”What are these for?” Paul asked, looking at the sunglasses.

”A disguise,” Elias said simply. ”You are now going to walk four blocks down to the local editorial desk of The National Enquirer. You will approach the photo editor. You will introduce yourself as a freelance paparazzo who got lucky outside a nightclub. You will demand five hundred dollars, in cash, for the exclusive undeveloped roll.”

Paul’s eyes bugged out of his head. He dropped the sunglasses. ”Me?! Why me?! Elias, I can’t go in there! I’ll sweat! I’ll stutter! They’ll know I’m lying!”

”Paul, look at me,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a smooth, hypnotic baritone that commanded absolute attention. He placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder. ”You are an actor. This is the role of a lifetime. You are a desperate, hungry photographer who holds the golden ticket. If you stammer, they won’t think you are lying. They will think you are nervous because you know what you possess. Use the anxiety. Monetize the stutter.”

”I... I don’t know...”

”Paul,” Elias said softly, ”if you do not sell this film, we are eating tap water for dinner.”

That was the ultimate motivation.

Paul swallowed hard, his face pale. He snatched the sunglasses from Elias’s hand, jammed them onto his face, grabbed the yellow Kodak camera, and marched out of the alleyway like a man walking to his own execution.

”He’s going to crack,” Charlize noted, finishing her cereal.

”He will survive,” Elias said, his dark eyes watching Paul disappear down the street. ”Desperation is the greatest acting coach in the world.”

An hour and a half later, Elias was sitting on the edge of the motel bed, meticulously going through the fine print of a standard Screen Actors Guild contract he had stolen from a waiting room.

The door to Room 104 slammed open.

Paul Rudd stood in the doorway. His hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat. He was breathing heavily, his eyes wide behind the oversized sunglasses. He looked like he had just robbed a bank and outrun a pack of police dogs.

He walked into the room in absolute silence. He approached the bed.

With a shaking hand, Paul reached into his pocket. He pulled out a wad of crisp, green bills and threw them onto the cheap bedspread.

Five one-hundred-dollar bills.

Five hundred dollars in untraceable, liquid cash.

”I did it,” Paul wheezed, collapsing onto the armchair Charlize had vacated. He put his head between his knees, trying to catch his breath. ”The editor... he was so mean. He yelled at me. He tried to offer me two hundred. I told him... I told him People magazine was waiting across the street. I lied to a tabloid editor, Elias! I’m going to hell!”

”You are not going to hell, Paul. You are going to the upper middle class,” Elias smiled, a profound, unadulterated look of sociopathic joy spreading across his face.

He reached out and picked up the five hundred-dollar bills. The paper felt crisp and glorious between his fingers. He had successfully bypassed the Hollywood accounting system, bypassed the paparazzi syndicates, and extracted liquid capital directly from his own notoriety.

It was a brilliantly executed, legally grey, absolutely shameless hustle.

”We have liquidity,” Elias announced, folding the bills and sliding them into his pocket. The relief was immediate, a soothing balm against the constant anxiety of the system’s drain. ”We can now afford to eat protein, and we have enough capital to fund our next physical infiltration.”

”Please tell me the next infiltration doesn’t involve me hiding behind a dumpster,” Paul groaned from the chair.

”No, Paul,” Elias said, his dark eyes gleaming as he looked toward the window, out at the Hollywood hills. ”The next infiltration requires a much higher caliber of wardrobe. We are going to the movies.”
