Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Bathtub and The Blonde

The heavy, soundproofed doors of Soundstage 4 at the CBS Radford Lot felt like the gates to a modern industrial temple.

Elias van Kempen stepped through the threshold, leaving the blinding midday Los Angeles sun behind. The air inside the cavernous warehouse was cool, smelling heavily of ozone, heated lighting gels, and freshly sawn plywood. A small army of grips, gaffers, and camera assistants swarmed the floor, stepping over thick black cables that snaked like pythons across the concrete.

In the center of the darkness, illuminated by massive, diffused softboxes, stood the set.

Elias stopped, crossing his arms, a slow, deeply satisfied smile spreading across his face.

It was perfect.

David Fincher had not compromised. The set was a masterclass in bleak, cinematic depression. It was a meticulous recreation of a dilapidated, unnamed European apartment. The wallpaper was peeling in agonizingly aesthetic strips. Rain machines pelted a grime-streaked fake window, and sitting dead center in the room, resting on cracked hexagonal tiles, was a vintage, claw-foot bathtub.

It was exactly what Elias had pitched yesterday in Room 4B. He had walked in with nothing but the clothes on his back and a total lack of respect for authority, and he had successfully hijacked the creative direction of a multi-million-dollar national campaign. He had forced a future Hollywood legend to build him a stage, and he hadn’t spent a single, agonizing cent to do it.

”Alright, people, listen to me!” David Fincher’s voice echoed across the soundstage, tight with perfectionist anxiety. The young director was pacing around the camera dolly, pointing aggressively at a lighting technician. ”I need more shadow on the left wall! It looks too warm! This isn’t a sitcom, this is a man at the end of his rope! Cut the fill light by half!”

Elias watched the chaotic synergy of the crew for a moment before his biological clock—and his pathological cheapness—demanded his attention.

It was time for breakfast.

He slipped away from the main cluster of executives and crew members, navigating the shadows of the soundstage until he found the holy grail of any Hollywood production: the Craft Services table.

For a Levi’s national campaign, the catering was aggressively lavish. There were tiered trays of imported cheeses, smoked meats, and an absolute mountain of fresh pastries sourced from a high-end French bakery in Beverly Hills.

Elias approached the table, mentally calculating how many days of caloric intake he could safely extract without triggering a production audit.

But as he rounded the corner of the coffee urns, he realized he wasn’t the only apex predator at the watering hole.

Standing in front of the pastry pyramid was a teenage girl. She was tall—easily five foot ten—with dirty-blonde hair pulled into a messy, practical knot. She wore a faded, oversized denim jacket that looked like it had survived a war, and a pair of worn-out combat boots.

She was also currently engaged in a frantic, highly aggressive act of grand larceny.

With lightning speed, the girl was snatching blueberry muffins and golden, flaky croissants from the silver platters and violently shoving them into a large, battered canvas tote bag hanging off her shoulder. She wasn’t just taking one or two; she was hoarding them with the desperate intensity of a squirrel preparing for a nuclear winter.

Elias stopped. He didn’t feel the urge to report her. He felt the overwhelming urge to critique her workflow.

He stepped up beside her, his tall frame casting a shadow over the table.

”You are destroying your carbohydrate margins,” Elias stated, his voice a smooth, flat, unbothered baritone.

The girl jumped, nearly dropping a muffin. She spun around, her eyes wide and defensive, ready to bolt. But when she saw Elias—not a security guard, but a ridiculously handsome, dangerously thin guy in a scuffed leather jacket—her panic instantly morphed into a fierce, aggressive scowl.

”Piss off,” she snapped. Her voice carried a sharp, undeniable South African accent. ”Find your own table, mate. I was here first.”

Elias didn’t blink. He looked from her fierce, striking face down to the canvas tote bag, which was now bulging awkwardly.

”I am not interested in a turf war over baked goods,” Elias said, leaning casually against the table. ”I am merely pointing out a logistical tragedy. You are shoving delicate, laminated French pastries into a canvas bag without any structural support. You are completely crushing the croissants. By the time you get back to whatever motel you’re squatting in, you will be eating a compressed ball of dough and butter.”

The girl glared at him, her jaw tightening. She looked at the bag, then back at Elias, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. She didn’t sense a rich, Hollywood snob. She sensed a fellow bottom-feeder. She sensed a shark.

”Are you the bloody food police?” she asked, crossing her arms defensively.

”I am a connoisseur of subsidized logistics,” Elias corrected flawlessly. He reached past her, bypassing the ruined pastries, and picked up a small, plastic-wrapped package of smoked salmon. He tapped it against the table. ”Furthermore, your target selection is amateurish. Muffins are cheap, heavy, and have a short shelf life. If you are going to steal from a multi-million-dollar production, you focus on the high-cost proteins. Smoked salmon. Prosciutto. Items that actually offset your weekly grocery expenditure.”

The girl stared at him. The sheer, sociopathic deadpan of his delivery broke through her defensive wall. A massive, completely involuntary sweatdrop formed on her temple.

”You’re completely insane,” she whispered, though she instinctively reached out and snatched a package of prosciutto off the tray, sliding it into her pocket.

”I am Elias,” he said, offering a slight, aristocratic nod.

The girl eyed him for a long moment, calculating the odds of him turning her in. She finally sighed, her tense shoulders dropping a fraction. ”Charlize.”

Elias glanced at the cheap paper tag clipped to the pocket of her oversized denim jacket. It read: Charlize - BG.

Background. An extra.

”Let me guess,” Elias murmured, his Photographic Memory perfectly aligning with his deductions. ”You are a recent import. You live in a cramped apartment, likely in the Valley. You took a bus here at four in the morning. And your agency booked you as atmospheric background talent for the princely sum of fifty dollars a day, before taxes.”

Charlize’s eyes widened, a flash of genuine vulnerability breaking through her tough exterior. ”Are you a bloody stalker? Or did you just read my diary?”

”I am an observer of the capitalist food chain,” Elias said, taking a slow sip from a bottle of sparkling water. ”Fifty dollars is a starvation wage, Charlize. It barely covers the calories you burned traveling to the set.”

”It’s fifty bucks more than I had yesterday,” Charlize shot back, her pride flaring up. She zipped her canvas bag shut, hoarding her crushed muffins. ”I sit in a chair for ten hours, I don’t cause trouble, and I get paid. That’s the hustle. Don’t lecture me, pretty boy. We’re obviously in the same boat.”

Elias smiled. It was the cold, terrifying smile of a corporate raider looking at a highly undervalued asset. Charlize Theron in 1991 was a diamond trapped in the mud. She was fierce, stunning, and just as ruthlessly pragmatic as he was. She was the perfect candidate for his phantom agency.

”We are not in the same boat, Charlize,” Elias corrected softly. ”You are rowing a dinghy. I am currently steering the battleship.”

Before she could respond to his monumental arrogance, a production assistant with a headset ran up to the table, looking frantic.

”Elias! Mr. van Kempen!” the PA gasped, looking at him with a mixture of terror and awe. ”David is ready for you. They’ve filled the tub. The executives are waiting.”

Charlize blinked, looking from the PA back to Elias. ”Wait. You’re the principal talent? You? The guy giving me lectures on stealing salmon?”

”I don’t steal, Charlize. I reallocate resources,” Elias said smoothly, handing her his half-empty bottle of water. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping into a low, conspiratorial whisper. ”Fifty dollars is a tragedy. How would you like to earn residuals?”

Charlize frowned, clutching her tote bag. ”What are you talking about?”

”Give me half of your stolen muffins,” Elias demanded shamelessly, his eyes deadpan. ”And I will personally ensure you are dragged into the principal frame of this commercial.”

Charlize stared at him, utterly bewildered by the transaction. ”You want my crushed muffins in exchange for national television exposure?”

”I am a man of simple needs, and I hate paying for dinner,” Elias stated. ”Do we have a deal?”

Charlize looked at the multi-million-dollar soundstage, then at the absolutely insane, beautiful teenager standing in front of her. She reached into her bag, pulled out three heavily squished blueberry muffins, and shoved them into his hands.

”Deal, Dutchie. But if you’re pulling my leg, I will drown you in that bathtub.”

”A synergy of the shameless,” Elias smirked, shoving the crushed pastries into his jacket pockets without an ounce of dignity. ”Follow me.”

Elias marched toward the center of the soundstage, with Charlize trailing cautiously a few steps behind.

The executives from Foote, Cone & Belding and Levi’s were standing behind the video village monitors, looking incredibly nervous. David Fincher was pacing around the bathtub, a light meter in his hand.

Elias didn’t hesitate. He walked straight onto the set.

He stripped off his vintage leather jacket, tossing it carelessly onto a nearby apple box. Underneath, he wore a thin, cheap white t-shirt and a pair of classic, unwashed Levi’s 501 jeans. He didn’t wait for direction. He climbed over the edge of the antique claw-foot tub and sat down.

The water inside was freezing. It was a brutal, bone-chilling shock to his system, but Elias’s face remained a mask of absolute, impenetrable stone. The thin white t-shirt instantly soaked through, clinging to the sharp, lean lines of his torso. The rain machines above hissed to life, showering him with cold, synthetic rain.

”Okay, look at me, Elias,” Fincher ordered, peering through the lens of the heavy Panavision camera. ”We need the isolation. We need the emptiness.”

”The frame is unbalanced, David,” Elias called out over the sound of the falling water.

Fincher stopped, pulling his eye away from the viewfinder, instantly annoyed. ”Excuse me? Did the actor just give me notes on composition?”

”The narrative of isolation only works if there is a point of contrast,” Elias explained, his voice entirely calm despite the freezing water soaking into his jeans. He didn’t sound like a rebellious teen; he sounded like a seasoned cinematographer. ”If I am alone in the room, it’s just a portrait. If I am ignoring someone else in the room, it becomes a psychological thriller.”

Fincher frowned, crossing his arms. He looked at the empty space in the background of the set. He tilted his head, his brilliant, obsessive mind rapidly calculating the visual geometry.

”A ghost in the background,” Fincher muttered, his eyes lighting up. ”A blurred figure. Out of focus. It adds tension. It makes the audience ask questions.” Fincher spun around, looking at the terrified production assistants. ”I need a background extra! Someone tall! Put them in that armchair by the window!”

Elias pointed a dripping finger directly at Charlize, who was standing near the edge of the lights, clutching her tote bag of pastries.

”Her,” Elias demanded.

Fincher glanced at Charlize. He took in her faded denim jacket, her messy blonde hair, and the fierce, defensive glare she shot back at him.

”Perfect,” Fincher snapped. ”You. Sit in the chair. Don’t look at the camera. Look at him like you hate him.”

Charlize sweatdropped, shooting Elias a look of absolute disbelief, before marching onto the set and dropping into the distressed armchair in the background. She crossed her arms, glaring at Elias’s back. She didn’t have to act. She genuinely thought he was a lunatic.

”Alright! Quiet on set!” the First Assistant Director bellowed.

The heavy, soundproof doors were sealed shut. The low hum of conversations died instantly. The only sound left was the hiss of the rain machines and the splashing of the freezing water against the porcelain tub.

Elias sat in the cold water. The executives were watching the monitors, their careers hanging on this strange, dark gamble.

It was time to guarantee the First-Dollar Gross. It was time to make sure this commercial didn’t just air, but exploded into the cultural zeitgeist.

Elias closed his eyes and mentally accessed the loan shark in his brain.

[SYSTEM SHOP ACCESSED.][ACTIVATING: CAMERA MAGNETISM (DURATION: 3 MINUTES)][COST: -15 CP][CURRENT BALANCE: 35 CP]

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias felt a strange, magnetic hum vibrate through his cheekbones. The skill didn’t change his physical appearance. It changed how the lens captured light around him. It created an optical illusion of inescapable gravity, ensuring that anyone watching the final footage would find it physically impossible to look away from his face.

”Roll sound!” ”Speed!” ”Roll camera!” ”Rolling!”

David Fincher took a breath, his eyes locked on the monitor.

”Action!”

Elias opened his eyes.

He didn’t move. He didn’t shiver from the cold. He leaned his head back against the rim of the bathtub, the water cascading over his face and soaking his dark hair.

He stared directly down the barrel of the Panavision lens.

He projected the devastating, soul-crushing exhaustion of a man who had lost everything, fused perfectly with the untouchable, arrogant coolness of a predator. He was the void. He was the aesthetic manifestation of a generation that was sick of being sold happiness.

Behind the monitor, the older Levi’s executive literally stopped breathing. The hair on his arms stood up. It was deeply uncomfortable, it was dark, and it was the most compelling thing he had ever seen.

In the background, Charlize sat out of focus, her fierce, blurry silhouette adding a haunting, unspoken tension to the frame.

For sixty seconds, nobody dared to speak. The silence on the set was absolute, commanded entirely by the sixteen-year-old boy freezing in a bathtub. Elias van Kempen wasn’t just acting. He was conquering the room.

And as the camera continued to roll, cementing his face into pop-culture history, Elias’s only internal thought was a deeply satisfying, capitalist calculation.

Three crushed muffins for a national syndication upgrade. A flawless transaction.
