Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The MTV Hostile Takeover

The heavy glass doors of Balthazar swung shut behind Elias van Kempen, cutting off the furious, echoing demands of Jimmy Iovine.

Elias stepped out onto the sun-drenched pavement of SoHo, the sounds of New York City instantly rushing back in. Yellow cabs honked in a discordant symphony, pedestrians rushed past with aggressive indifference, and the smell of roasting nuts mixed with exhaust fumes.

Elias took a deep breath of the polluted air. He felt a profound, electric thrill racing through his veins. He had just walked up to one of the most terrifying, powerful gatekeepers in the music industry and slapped a ”No Trespassing” sign across his ego. He had laid the groundwork for a distribution war that would ultimately ensure he kept one hundred percent of his intellectual property.

It was a masterstroke of capitalist aggression.

He slid his hand into the inner pocket of his vintage leather jacket, his fingers brushing against the cold, hard plastic of the ”Creep” master tape. The asset was secure. The ambush was complete.

It was time to return to Los Angeles and prepare for the fallout.

He began walking north, calculating the most cost-efficient route to JFK Airport. A taxi would cost him forty dollars. A private car service, which his new ’Tycoon’ status technically demanded, would cost him over a hundred.

The subway, Elias reasoned with clinical precision. Two dollars. A ninety-eight percent reduction in logistical overhead.

He adjusted the collar of his jacket, projecting the absolute, untouchable aura of a European aristocrat, despite the fact that he was currently navigating the grime of the New York transit system.

Suddenly, a violent, deafening klaxon erupted inside his cerebral cortex.

It wasn’t the usual Cha-Ching! of a daily fee deduction. It sounded like an air raid siren strapped directly to his optic nerve.

Elias staggered slightly, his hand flying to his temple as the retro, green-and-red stock ticker interface violently materialized across his vision. The screen wasn’t just scrolling; it was flashing in a blinding, aggressive crimson red.

[CRITICAL SYSTEM WARNING: SHAMELESS POINTS (CP) DEPLETED.][CURRENT BALANCE: 0 CP]

Elias glared at the floating text. ”I am aware of my balance. I utilized the Demonic Negotiation Aura to secure a multi-million-dollar asset. It was a calculated expenditure.”

The system did not care about his calculations. It operated on a predatory, uncompromising algorithm.

[A ZERO-BALANCE VIOLATES THE TERMS OF SERVICE OF THE SHAMELESS CAPITALIST HUD.][INITIATING PENALTY PROTOCOL IN T-MINUS 10 MINUTES.][PENALTY: IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION OF ’GOLDEN RATIO FACIAL SYMMETRY’ PASSIVE BUFF.][AESTHETIC DEGRADATION IMMINENT: A MASSIVE, HIGHLY VISIBLE, PURULENT CYST WILL MATERIALIZE ON THE USER’S NASAL BRIDGE UNTIL A POSITIVE BALANCE IS RESTORED.]

Elias stopped dead in his tracks, standing in the middle of a crowded crosswalk.

A delivery guy on a bicycle swerved to avoid him, yelling a creative New York obscenity, but Elias didn’t even hear it.

The blood drained entirely from his face.

A massive, purulent cyst. On his nose.

His face was his primary engine of capital generation. His flawless, exotic, brooding aesthetic was the sole reason he had secured the Mervyn’s contract, the Calvin Klein principal campaign, and the attention of the Runway Mafia. It was an asset worth millions of dollars. If a giant, cartoonish pimple erupted on his face before he even boarded his flight back to Los Angeles, the paparazzi would capture it. The agencies would panic. His brand would experience a catastrophic depreciation.

He could not allow the system to vandalize his primary asset.

[EMERGENCY FLASH SALE MISSION GENERATED.][OBJECTIVE: HIJACK A LIVE NATIONAL TELEVISION BROADCAST AND EXECUTE A ’CHICKEN DANCE’ FOR A MINIMUM OF FIVE SECONDS.][MANDATORY REQUIREMENT: USER MUST VERBALLY PROMOTE ’SOVEREIGN MEDIA’ DURING THE EXECUTION.][REWARD: +25 CP AND IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF FACIAL DEGRADATION.][TIME REMAINING: 9 MINUTES, 45 SECONDS.]

Elias stared at the floating text, his left eye twitching violently.

”You are a fundamentally sick, degenerate piece of software,” Elias hissed through gritted teeth, resuming his walk at a significantly faster, borderline panicked pace.

A chicken dance. On national television.

It was the ultimate humiliation. It was a complete, structural dismantling of the cold, untouchable, aristocratic persona he had spent the last month carefully cultivating. But the alternative was losing his face.

He had nine minutes to find a live television broadcast in the middle of Manhattan.

He sprinted. He abandoned the cool, unbothered saunter of a fashion model and broke into a desperate, long-legged run, his vintage leather jacket flapping behind him. He dodged businessmen, leaped over a hot dog cart, and aggressively shoved past a group of tourists, his dark eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of a satellite truck or a heavy broadcast lens.

News vans are stationed near City Hall, Elias calculated, his brain working at lightspeed. But a press conference is too heavily guarded. I need a street-level broadcast. I need a porous perimeter.

He burst into the chaotic, neon-drenched epicenter of Times Square.

It was a sensory overload of massive billboards, screeching traffic, and thousands of pedestrians. Elias stopped, his chest heaving, his eyes darting frantically.

Eight minutes.

Then, he saw it.

Set up on a pedestrian island near 46th Street, surrounded by a surging crowd of screaming, hyperactive teenagers, was a massive camera rig. A boom mic hovered over the crowd. Two production assistants wearing headsets were trying to hold back the throngs of kids.

Standing in the center of the island, holding a microphone with a distinctive, blocky ’M’ logo, was a man who looked like he had been constructed entirely from 1990s surf culture and excessive hair gel. He wore a brightly colored, unbuttoned shirt over a tight tank top, baggy shorts, and possessed a wild, curly mop of hair.

Pauly Shore.

In 1991, Shore was the undisputed king of MTV’s street-level programming. He was the chaotic, hyper-verbal VJ who hosted Totally Pauly, a show consisting almost entirely of him wandering around, harassing pedestrians, and speaking in a bizarre, surfer-dude dialect that the youth of America inexplicably adored.

He was broadcasting live.

Target acquired, Elias thought, his sociopathic focus locking onto the VJ.

Elias didn’t hesitate. He checked the mental timer.

Two minutes.

He couldn’t just run up and start dancing. That was amateurish. That was desperate. If he was going to sacrifice his public dignity to appease a digital loan shark, he was going to do it with the absolute, terrifying arrogance of a man who owned the network.

Elias smoothed down the lapels of his leather jacket. He ran a hand through his dark, perfectly messy hair. He let the panic drain from his body, replacing it with the cold, dense gravity of the Playboy Alpha. He didn’t need CP to project it; his natural, underlying charisma was a weapon of mass destruction.

He walked toward the MTV perimeter.

”Hey, buddy, back up. We’re shooting live here,” a burly security guard grunted, stepping into Elias’s path.

Elias didn’t stop. He didn’t even look at the guard. He fixed his dark, mesmerizing eyes directly on the red ’Live’ tally light on top of the massive broadcast camera.

With a smooth, elegant motion, Elias reached into his pocket and pulled out his provisional SAG membership card—the yellow piece of plastic that had cost him $150 of physical agony. He flashed it at the security guard with the dismissive speed of a seasoned executive flashing an FBI badge.

”Principal talent. Sovereign Media. Clear the sightline,” Elias commanded, his baritone voice a low rumble that brokered absolutely zero argument.

The security guard blinked, seeing the SAG card and the terrifyingly confident, impossibly handsome European teenager. He assumed Elias was a scheduled guest star. He stepped aside.

Elias walked into the center of the camera frame.

Pauly Shore was mid-sentence, working the crowd. ”So I’m chilling here in the Big Apple, right? The crust is thin, the babes are looking crispy, and we’re just, like, totally riding the wave of the MTV generation, you know what I’m saying, buuuuuddy?”

Pauly thrust the microphone toward a screaming teenage girl in the front row.

Before the girl could scream into it, a long, elegant hand smoothly intercepted the microphone.

Elias van Kempen didn’t snatch it. He simply took it from Pauly Shore with the calm, absolute authority of a teacher confiscating a toy from a disruptive child.

Pauly froze, his jaw dropping. The VJ looked at Elias, taking in the brooding, Heroin Chic aesthetic, the sharp jawline, and the completely deadpan, aristocratic expression.

”Whoa, hey, dude,” Pauly stammered, entirely thrown off his chaotic rhythm. ”We’re live, man. What’s the... what’s the flavor here?”

Elias turned to face the massive broadcast camera. Millions of teenagers across America were currently watching him.

He didn’t smile. He looked directly down the lens, projecting the suffocating weight of a Wall Street raider about to announce a hostile takeover.

”Your drunken surfer aesthetic is currently experiencing a massive market depreciation, Pauly,” Elias stated into the microphone, his baritone voice smooth, crisp, and utterly devoid of irony. ”The cultural paradigm is shifting. Allow me to demonstrate the true value of an appreciating asset.”

Pauly Shore stared at him, a massive, highly visible sweatdrop rolling down his curly hair. He had interviewed rock stars, rappers, and politicians, but he had never been intellectually atomized by a teenager in a leather jacket on live television.

”I am Elias van Kempen,” Elias announced to the nation, his voice ringing with absolute, shameless authority. ”And for all your management and distribution needs, I highly recommend the unparalleled, predatory efficiency of Sovereign Media.”

The plug was delivered. The first condition was met.

Now came the horror.

Elias didn’t break eye contact with the camera. He kept his face locked in that same, terrifyingly serious, brooding, aristocratic scowl.

Then, moving with the slow, deliberate elegance of a classical ballet dancer, Elias raised his elbows. He tucked his hands into his armpits.

And, while staring directly into the souls of millions of MTV viewers, Elias van Kempen executed a flawless, mathematically precise Chicken Dance.

It was the most absurd, jarring, and visually confusing thing ever broadcast on the network. He didn’t smile. He didn’t look silly. He flapped his elbows and wiggled his hips with a level of cold, intense, sociopathic seriousness that made it look like an avant-garde threat rather than a comedic stunt.

He was a Greek god, dressed in grunge, performing a humiliating polka dance as if he were declaring war on the concept of joy itself.

The crowd of teenagers fell completely silent. They were too confused to scream.

Pauly Shore stood frozen next to him, his mouth hanging open, entirely speechless. The MTV cameraman was shaking, desperately trying to keep the shot steady as he fought the urge to burst into hysterical laughter.

Elias counted in his head.

One. Two. Three. Four. Five.

The second he hit the five-second mark, Elias stopped the dance.

He smoothed down the lapels of his leather jacket. He turned back to the utterly paralyzed Pauly Shore and politely, gently placed the MTV microphone back into the VJ’s trembling hand.

”Thank you for the airtime,” Elias murmured smoothly. ”Have a highly profitable broadcast.”

Elias turned on his heel and walked away. The crowd of teenagers parted for him as if he were Moses parting the Red Sea. They didn’t ask for autographs. They simply stared, terrified and mesmerized by the sheer, unadulterated absurdity of what they had just witnessed.

As Elias stepped out of the camera’s perimeter and disappeared into the throngs of Times Square, a glorious, deafening sound erupted in his skull.

[CHA-CHING!]

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: EMERGENCY MISSION COMPLETE - THE NATIONAL BROADCAST TROLL.][EVALUATION: YOU SACRIFICED YOUR PUBLIC DIGNITY ON THE ALTAR OF MTV, EXECUTING A POULTRY-THEMED DANCE WITH THE GRAVITY OF A FUNERAL DIRGE. IT WAS HORRIFYING. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. YOUR FACE REMAINS FLAWLESS.][REWARD: +25 SHAMELESS POINTS (CP) DEPOSITED.]

Elias let out a long, shuddering exhale, feeling the tension drain from his spine. His CP balance was restored. The purulent cyst protocol was canceled. His multi-million-dollar aesthetic was secure.

He had survived the extortion.

He kept walking down Broadway, the adrenaline slowly fading, leaving behind the hollow, gnawing sensation of his physical reality.

He approached a small, steaming pizza window embedded in the side of a building. The smell of cheap cheese and grease was intoxicating.

”One slice. Cheese,” Elias ordered, his voice returning to its normal, unbothered cadence.

He reached into his pocket and handed over a dollar and fifty cents in loose change. The vendor handed him a flimsy paper plate holding a massive, greasy slice of New York pizza.

Total capital expenditure: $1.50.

Elias took a slow bite of the cheap, scalding hot pizza as he walked toward the subway entrance. It wasn’t the caviar from The Plaza, but it was sustenance.

He pulled two more dollar bills from his pocket, feeding them into the subway ticket machine. He navigated the turnstiles and descended into the sweltering, noise-choked cavern of the underground station.

He stood on the platform, his faded leather jacket contrasting sharply with the harsh fluorescent lights, eating his cheap pizza while waiting for the A-Train to take him to JFK airport.

Dealing with Jimmy Iovine was a standard negotiation, Elias thought, taking another bite of the pizza, his dark eyes staring at the dirty subway tracks. But dealing with this system... is going to require a significantly higher threshold for public humiliation.

He finished the slice, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and boarded the train. Sovereign Media had officially launched its guerrilla marketing campaign. It was time to return to Los Angeles and see how many fires he had started.
