Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The First Payout and The Parasite

In Hollywood, a ”montage” is traditionally a cinematic sequence accompanied by an upbeat pop song, designed to rapidly show a protagonist achieving success, training for a fight, or falling in love.

For Elias van Kempen, the next twenty-one days at The Pelican Motel were a montage of agonizing, unadulterated financial bleeding.

The curse of the Net-90 payment clause was not a myth; it was a physical weight that pressed down on Room 104 with suffocating pressure. Elias had negotiated a brilliant, progressive residual scaler for the Levi’s 501 campaign, but corporate accounting departments operated with the speed of a dying glacier. And while the corporate gears slowly turned, Elias’s liquid capital was evaporating.

Day 1 to Day 21 was a masterclass in the attrition of the human spirit.

Charlize Theron, the stunning future empress of Sovereign Media, spent the days practically folded into the motel’s lumpy, floral-patterned recliner chair. She stubbornly refused to return to the predatory agency housing she had just escaped, meaning she was now officially squatting in Elias’s $150-a-week operational headquarters. To pass the time and mask her hunger, she read through Elias’s stolen fashion magazines, muttering cynical critiques in Afrikaans about the lighting choices of top-tier photographers.

Paul Rudd, meanwhile, was spiraling into a deep, theatrical depression. He had gone to five different commercial auditions, only to be rejected at every single one because he ”didn’t have the right jawline for frozen pizza.” He spent his evenings lying flat on the stained carpet, staring at the ceiling, wondering aloud if his uncle’s tire shop in Kansas offered dental insurance.

But the true horror of the twenty-one days was borne entirely by Elias.

Every single morning, precisely at 12:00 PM, the loan shark living in his cerebral cortex came to collect.

[CHA-CHING!][DEDUCTING DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE: -$5.00 USD.]

Elias would close his eyes, perfectly still, as the green numbers of his liquid cash reserve ticked down. Five dollars a day. A hundred and five dollars over three weeks, completely incinerated by a phantom server tax. Add the forty dollars he had meticulously rationed to feed the three of them a sustaining diet of generic instant noodles, tap water, and the cheapest white bread legally sold in the state of California, and the financial damage was catastrophic.

His starting balance of $383.50 had bled out to a terrifyingly thin $238.50.

But Elias never complained. He ate his sodium-heavy noodles with the pristine, unbothered elegance of a man dining at a Michelin-star restaurant. He was waiting. In his previous life, he had learned that the most important skill a capitalist could possess wasn’t negotiation; it was the ability to suffer through the silence before the check cleared.

Then came the twenty-first day.

Elias returned from his daily, sweltering two-mile walk to the unvetted P.O. Box he had rented in West Hollywood. He didn’t just walk into the motel courtyard; he glided. The aura of a deity descending from Mount Olympus seemed to radiate from his faded thrift-store leather jacket.

He opened the door to Room 104. Charlize looked up from a battered copy of Vogue, and Paul stopped his miserable pacing.

Elias didn’t say a word. He walked directly to the cheap laminate desk and slammed a thick, heavy cream-colored envelope down onto the wood. The logo of FCB (Foote, Cone & Belding) was embossed in the top left corner.

”The silence,” Elias announced, his baritone voice sending a chill of pure adrenaline through the room, ”is over.”

Paul actually stopped breathing. Charlize sat up straight, tossing the magazine onto the floor.

With agonizing, deliberate slowness, Elias picked up the silver fountain pen he had stolen from the KLM desk in Amsterdam. He slid the sharp nib under the flap of the envelope, slicing it open with a satisfying rip.

He pulled out a thick stack of corporate paperwork. Attached to the front, secured with a gold paperclip, was a check.

Elias stared at the numbers printed across the bank draft. He had mathematically projected the payout based on the commercial’s syndication volume, but seeing the physical ink was a different beast entirely. David Fincher’s haunting, depressed ’bathtub’ aesthetic hadn’t just worked; it had exploded into the cultural zeitgeist. The commercial had been placed in ultra-high rotation across North America and Europe, instantly rendering the neon-colored, smiling surfer-boy advertisements of the 80s completely obsolete.

The Progressive Residuals Scaler had triggered perfectly.

Elias slowly turned the check around so Paul and Charlize could see it.

$45,000.00.

Paul Rudd’s knees buckled. He actually collapsed onto the edge of the mattress, clutching his chest. ”Forty-five... forty-five thousand dollars? For one commercial? Elias, that’s more than my parents make in a year! We’re rich! You’re rich! Sovereign Media is a real thing!”

Charlize stared at the check, her blue eyes wide, a genuine, unguarded smile breaking across her face. ”You actually did it, you absolute madman. You actually bled them dry.”

”This is merely the first dividend,” Elias corrected smoothly, though a deep, satisfying warmth spread through his chest. He took the check back, admiring the zeros. ”This is the seed capital. We are no longer operating in a defensive posture. We are moving to offensive acquisitions.”

”Offensive acquisitions, whatever!” Paul cheered, jumping up from the bed, his depression entirely cured by the proximity to wealth. He grabbed the motel’s rotary phone. ”I don’t care about capitalism right now! I care about cheese! I’m ordering a large pepperoni pizza! Actually, make it two! With stuffed crust! We’re celebrating!”

Elias smiled, opening his mouth to agree. A twenty-dollar pizza was an acceptable reward for surviving the Net-90 attrition.

But before he could speak, a sound so violent and deafening detonated in his skull that he actually staggered backward, hitting the wall.

[KAAA-CHINGGG!!!]

It wasn’t the usual, metallic tap of the daily deduction. It sounded like an entire bank vault door slamming shut. The UI flooded his vision, flashing in a blinding, aggressive gold and red.

[SYSTEM ALERT: MASSIVE WEALTH INFLUX DETECTED.][CALCULATING NEW NET WORTH...][USER HAS CROSSED THE POVERTY THRESHOLD. RECALIBRATING TYCOON STATUS TO: EMERGING PREDATOR.][WARNING: AS YOUR CORPORATE FOOTPRINT EXPANDS, SO DO YOUR INFRASTRUCTURE COSTS.]

Elias’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated terror. ”No. No, you parasitic algorithm, don’t you dare—”

[ADJUSTING SYSTEM OVERHEAD MAINTENANCE TO MATCH CURRENT WEALTH BRACKET.][NEW DAILY MAINTENANCE FEE: $50.00 USD / DAY.]

Elias’s face went entirely white. All the blood drained from his extremities.

Fifty dollars a day? The loan shark hadn’t just increased its interest rate; it had multiplied it by a factor of ten. The system didn’t care that he had just earned forty-five thousand dollars. It saw a fatter pig, and it wanted a bigger cut of the bacon. It would now cost him one thousand, five hundred dollars a month simply to exist in this timeline without projectile vomiting blood.

He was technically rich, but the system had fundamentally ensured he would always feel poor.

”Elias?” Paul asked, pausing with the phone receiver halfway to his ear. ”Are you okay? You look like you just saw a ghost. Do you want extra cheese on your half?”

Elias stared at the rotary phone. His chest heaved. The phantom pain of fifty dollars a day being vaporized from his bank account hit him with the force of a physical blow.

With a movement so fast it blurred, Elias crossed the room, snatched the phone receiver out of Paul’s hand, and slammed it down onto the cradle.

”Cancel the pizza,” Elias commanded, his voice completely deadpan, though a massive, comedic sweatdrop rolled down his temple.

Paul blinked, utterly confused. ”What? Why? We have forty-five thousand dollars!”

”The macroeconomic climate is highly unstable, Paul,” Elias lied shamelessly, his jaw tight. ”The inflation tax is too high. The cost of dough and processed cheese does not align with our current operational overhead. Go to the hot plate.”

”The hot plate?” Paul echoed, horrified.

”Boil the water, Paul,” Elias ordered, pointing a trembling finger at the corner of the room. ”We are eating the chicken-flavored sodium packets.”

Charlize watched him, her jaw dropping. ”You have got to be kidding me. You just cashed a check for forty-five grand, and you won’t spend ten dollars on a pizza? You are clinically insane! You are a dragon hoarding gold in a trash can!”

”I am securing our liquidity,” Elias snapped, carefully folding the forty-five-thousand-dollar check and placing it into his inner pocket as if it were a fragile artifact.

He turned his back on them, refusing to budge on the issue. He reached into his duffel bag and pulled out the second item he had retrieved from the P.O. Box.

It was a thick, bound manuscript. A screenplay.

He had secured this audition weeks ago, shortly after arriving in Los Angeles, by walking into an open casting call and completely dominating the room through pure, unadulterated intimidation. He hadn’t used the system; he had just stared down a room full of character actors until they forgot their own names.

Elias looked at the title page.

RESERVOIR DOGSWritten and Directed by Quentin Tarantino.

In 1991, Quentin Tarantino was a hyperactive video store clerk with a brilliant script and a shoestring indie budget. In five years, he would be the most imitated director on the planet.

Elias sat down at the wobbly desk, ignoring Paul’s pathetic whimpers as he boiled water for the instant noodles. Elias opened the script and engaged his Photographic Memory. He didn’t read the pages; he absorbed them, flipping through the entire screenplay in less than three minutes.

He reached the end and closed the script. He leaned back in his chair, a slow, deeply sociopathic smile erasing the lingering pain of the system’s inflation tax.

”What is that?” Charlize asked, leaning over to look at the cover. ”A movie script? You booked a film?”

”An independent feature,” Elias corrected. ”It shoots in a warehouse in Eagle Rock. The budget is practically nonexistent, the actors are mostly veterans working for scale, and the director talks faster than a man on amphetamines.”

”So, what’s your part?” Paul asked, pouring hot water into the styrofoam cups. ”Are you the lead? The romantic interest?”

Elias let out a dark chuckle. ”There is no romantic interest, Paul. It is a film about a diamond heist gone wrong. My character is named Mr. Blue.”

”Mr. Blue,” Charlize repeated, sounding slightly impressed. ”Sounds mysterious. How many pages of dialogue do you have?”

”I have exactly three lines,” Elias stated, his smile widening into something truly terrifying. ”I sit at a diner table in the opening scene, I complain about a waitress, and then I am killed off-screen before the second act.”

Paul frowned, handing Elias a cup of steaming, cheap noodles. ”Three lines? Elias, you just headlined a national commercial. Why would you take a role with three lines? You’re basically an extra with a name tag.”

Elias took the cup, blowing the steam away. His dark eyes gleamed with the pure, predatory hunger of a capitalist who had just spotted a fatal flaw in a competitor’s armor.

The original actor who played Mr. Blue was a real-life ex-convict and author named Edward Bunker. He had played the role exactly as written: quiet, in the background, a minor flavor character to fill out the table while the heavyweights—Harvey Keitel, Steve Buscemi, Michael Madsen—did the heavy lifting.

But Elias was not an ex-convict. And he absolutely refused to be in the background.

”Three lines is a limitation for an amateur, Paul,” Elias explained softly, taking a sip of the salty broth. ”For a professional, three lines is an unmonitored backdoor into the entire production.”

He tapped his chest, feeling the physical presence of the $45,000 check.

”I now have capital,” Elias declared, looking at the ceiling, effectively talking to the loan shark in his brain. ”I don’t need a fifty-page monologue to dominate a movie. I just need to purchase the right frequency. I am going to buy enough raw, cinematic gravity from the System to ensure that when I am on screen, the audience won’t even remember the names of the A-List actors sitting next to me.”

He looked back at Charlize and Paul, his aura flaring with cold, uncompromising ambition.

”Eat your noodles. Tomorrow, we are going to a table read. And we are going to steal a movie.”
