Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Three-Sentence Takedown

The stale, unconditioned air of the Bank of America branch on Melrose Avenue suddenly felt thick, heavy with the suffocating weight of an impending execution.

Richard Sterling Jr. stood at the VIP counter, his brick-like cellular phone still clutched in his hand, a sneer plastered across his aggressively gelled face. He expected the kid in the faded thrift-store leather jacket to look away. He expected the peasant to lower his eyes, intimidated by the Armani suit and the gold Rolex Day-Date.

Instead, Elias van Kempen stepped out of the long, miserable line of exhausted customers.

He didn’t rush. He moved with the slow, predatory elegance of a wolf cornering a wounded deer. The ambient noise of the bank—the shuffling of shoes, the clacking of the tellers’ keyboards, the murmurs of irritation—seemed to die down completely as Elias stopped just two feet away from the young real estate heir.

Elias looked at him. His eyes were dark, bottomless, and utterly devoid of anything resembling human empathy. He didn’t see a man; he saw a terribly managed balance sheet walking around in a cheap suit.

Brenda, the teller behind the VIP glass, froze, her hands hovering over her keyboard. The entire line of customers held their collective breath.

Richard’s sneer faltered slightly. He puffed out his chest, trying to maintain his height advantage, but Elias was 189 centimeters of pure, uncompromising Dutch-Indonesian steel.

”I told you not to stare, kid,” Richard snapped, though his voice lacked its previous booming confidence. ”Security is going to toss you out on your—”

”Before you bulldoze that theater, Richard, you might want to read the 1990 Burbank commercial zoning ordinance, which explicitly prohibits the conversion of designated cultural arts zones into parking structures without a mandatory, two-year environmental impact review,” Elias said.

His voice was a smooth, chilling baritone that cut through the silence of the bank like a scalpel. He didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to.

Richard’s jaw went slack. The hand holding the cell phone dropped an inch.

Elias didn’t give him a single microsecond to recover. He leaned in just a fraction, delivering the second strike with clinical, mathematical precision.

”That means your brilliant plan for a ’ten percent yield’ will actually bleed your father’s heavily leveraged holding company for twenty-four months in dead holding costs and legal fees, effectively destroying your quarterly liquidity.”

A man in the back of the line—a tired-looking contractor in dirty boots—let out a sharp, genuine bark of laughter. A woman holding a crying baby snickered. The entire room, having just been subjected to Richard’s obnoxious boasting, was instantly captivated by the brutal, surgical dismantling of the golden boy.

Richard’s face turned the color of wet chalk. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. His brain, accustomed to bullying small business owners and sycophants, was completely unequipped to handle a deep-dive forensic audit of his business model from a teenager in the middle of a public bank.

Elias tilted his head, his exotic, striking face catching the harsh fluorescent light as he delivered the final, fatal blow.

”So unless you plan on paving that lot with the fibers of that tragic, off-the-rack suit you’re wearing to masquerade as a competent executive, I suggest you step aside and let the adults handle their banking.”

Silence. Absolute, devastating silence.

Richard Sterling Jr. looked like he had just been hit by a freight train. His eyes darted around the bank. He saw the smirks on the faces of the working-class customers. He saw Brenda the teller biting her lip to hide a massive smile. The illusion of his power, his Daddy-funded superiority, shattered into a million humiliating pieces on the linoleum floor.

A massive, cartoonish sweatdrop materialized on his temple, rolling down his cheek and dripping onto his suddenly very cheap-looking collar.

”I... you... my father...” Richard stammered, his voice cracking into a humiliatingly high pitch.

He didn’t finish the sentence. The sheer, crushing weight of public humiliation overwhelmed him. Panic seized his features. He blindly slammed his cell phone into his leather briefcase, nearly dropping it in his haste, and spun on his heels. He practically sprinted for the heavy glass doors, pushing his way out onto Melrose Avenue and disappearing into the smoggy afternoon heat.

Elias didn’t even watch him leave.

Inside his mind, a symphony of glorious, mechanical capitalist triumph erupted.

Elias closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, feeling the massive influx of data upload into his Photographic Memory. It was a beautiful, devastating map of shell companies, over-leveraged loans, and unpaid municipal taxes belonging to Sterling Holdings. It was the blueprint for his first hostile takeover.

When Elias opened his eyes, the cold, sociopathic predator vanished instantly.

He stepped up to the VIP counter, stepping effortlessly into the spot Richard had just vacated. He looked through the thick plexiglass at Brenda, the exhausted teller. The icy gaze was replaced by a warm, devastatingly charming, million-dollar smile that made Brenda’s heart do a sudden, involuntary backflip.

”Good afternoon, Brenda,” Elias purred softly, leaning his tall frame against the counter. ”Now that the noise pollution has cleared the airspace... I believe it’s a beautiful day to open a business account.”

Brenda blinked, her cheeks flushing furiously. ”I... yes. Yes, of course, sir. Uh, do you have your documentation?”

”Naturally,” Elias said.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his Dutch passport, sliding it under the slot. Next came the yellow, freshly laminated provisional SAG membership card—his legal anchor to the American labor system. And finally, he pulled out the thick wad of cash he had extorted from the Mervyn’s California petty cash box, along with the remnants of his Amsterdam hustle.

Three hundred and fifty-three dollars and fifty cents.

Brenda looked at the cash, then at the teenager. ”And... what is the name of the corporate entity for the checking account, Mr. van Kempen?”

”Sovereign Media,” Elias replied smoothly.

It was a name that would, in the coming decades, terrify studio heads and send Wall Street raiders running for cover. But today, it was just a name written on a deposit slip in a broken-down bank in Hollywood.

Brenda typed rapidly on her retro, green-screen terminal. ”Alright. We require a minimum deposit of two hundred dollars for a business checking account. You have three-fifty-three. Let me just process the paperwork.”

Elias watched as she fed the cash into the counting machine. The physical weight of the bills leaving his possession caused a brief, agonizing phantom pain in his chest—a symptom of his pathological cheapness. But his fifty-year-old brain knew better. Physical cash in a slum motel was a liability. Banked capital was a weapon.

”Here is your temporary checkbook, Mr. van Kempen,” Brenda said softly, sliding a small, blue vinyl binder through the slot. ”Your official checks embossed with ’Sovereign Media’ will be mailed to your address in two weeks. Is there anything else I can help you with today?”

”You’ve been exceptional, Brenda. Thank you,” Elias smiled, taking the checkbook and slipping it into his inner jacket pocket.

He turned and walked away from the counter. The line of customers parted for him like the Red Sea, watching him with a mixture of awe and deep, unspoken respect.

Elias pushed open the heavy glass doors and stepped out into the blinding Los Angeles sun. He had no car, no home beyond a smoky motel room, and no family on this continent. But as he patted the breast pocket of his jacket, feeling the hard outline of the checkbook, a cold, unapologetic thrill raced through his veins.

He was no longer a starving kid with cash stuffed in his socks.

Sovereign Media was officially incorporated. The war had begun.
