Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Motel Switchboard Hack

The blue vinyl binder containing the temporary checks for Sovereign Media sat on the edge of the sagging mattress in Room 104.

Elias van Kempen stared at it. The dim, buzzing fluorescent light of The Pelican Motel cast long, depressing shadows across the cheap carpeting. Outside, the distant wail of a police siren harmonized with the low, persistent rumble of traffic on Hollywood Boulevard.

He had the name. He had the legal entity. He had the bank account.

But as Elias sat in the stifling heat, a fundamental, logistical truth settled over him like a suffocating blanket. An entity without an interface was just a ghost. If Mali Finn—the legendary casting director who would soon be casting Titanic—received his Comp Card and decided to call him in for a reading, where exactly would she call?

He couldn’t list a public payphone. And he certainly couldn’t have a high-powered Hollywood gatekeeper greeted by a raspy voice shouting, ’Pelican Motel, hold on, I gotta find the kid in 104.’ It would instantly shatter the illusion of his high-fashion, European-import branding.

A normal, aspiring talent manager would rent a tiny, windowless office space in Beverly Hills or Century City. They would sign a commercial lease for two thousand dollars a month, hire a receptionist for a thousand more, and bleed their seed capital dry before the phone even rang.

Elias let out a soft, mocking laugh. Rent an office? Pay a receptionist? I would rather staple my eyelids to a moving bus.

Capitalism was about maximizing leverage, and right now, his greatest point of leverage was his absolute refusal to spend money.

He picked up the blue binder, grabbed a five-dollar bill he had withdrawn during his bank transaction, and walked out into the courtyard.

The air smelled of chlorine and cheap beer. Elias ignored the flickering neon sign and pushed open the door to the manager’s office.

The manager—still sporting the same stained undershirt and spectacular comb-over from days ago—was hunched over the front desk, aggressively stabbing a pencil into a crossword puzzle. He looked up, his expression instantly hardening.

”Rent ain’t due till Tuesday, kid. If your sink is leaking, put a bucket under it. I’m busy,” the manager grunted, waving him away.

Elias didn’t leave. He walked directly to the counter, leaning his long frame over the scuffed linoleum surface. He didn’t speak immediately. He just let his dark, intense eyes rest heavily on the manager, projecting the aura of a man who was about to deliver a hostile corporate audit.

”I have a business proposition,” Elias said smoothly, his baritone voice cutting through the hum of the small television in the corner.

The manager scoffed, dropping his pencil. ”A business proposition? From a kid squatting in 104? What are you gonna do, offer me a percentage of the loose change you find in the sofa cushions?”

Elias didn’t smile. He placed the crisp five-dollar bill on the counter, keeping his index finger firmly pressed against Alexander Hamilton’s face.

”I am officially retaining your services as the Chief Logistics Officer for Sovereign Media,” Elias stated, his tone devoid of any irony.

The manager stared at the five dollars, then up at Elias. ”You’re hiring me? For five bucks?”

”It is a weekly retainer,” Elias corrected, leaning in closer. ”And the job description is simple. My agency is currently orchestrating a massive, multi-tiered mail campaign targeting the top casting directors in this city. Consequently, the phone sitting on this desk is going to start ringing. When it does, and the caller asks for Elias van Kempen, you will not grunt. You will not mention the Pelican Motel.”

Elias picked up a blank, temporary check from his binder and placed it next to the cash. It was completely worthless without a signature, but the visual impact of a corporate checkbook was undeniable.

”You will answer the phone by saying, ’Sovereign Media, please hold,’” Elias instructed, enunciating every syllable with terrifying clarity. ”You will then put the caller on hold, walk your considerable mass across the courtyard, and knock on the door of Room 104. You will do this with the utmost professionalism. If you fail, or if you make me sound like I live in a slum, I will personally guarantee that the Los Angeles County Health Department receives a detailed, anonymous tip regarding the exact biological composition of your swimming pool.”

The manager’s face drained of color. He looked out the window at the murky, green water of the pool, then back at the utterly dead, unblinking eyes of the teenager. The kid wasn’t bluffing. He was a psychopath.

”You want me to be your... your switchboard operator?” the manager asked, his voice cracking slightly. ”For five dollars a week?”

”I am offering you a ground-floor equity position in a rapidly expanding enterprise,” Elias lied shamelessly, pushing the five-dollar bill forward. ”Take the blue-chip investment, or take the health code violation. The market is closing.”

The manager sweatdropped. He quickly snatched the five dollars off the counter, stuffing it into his pocket. ”Fine. Fine! Sovereign Media, please hold. But if they call past midnight, I’m hanging up!”

”A pleasure doing business with you, Chief Logistics Officer,” Elias smirked, turning on his heel and walking out.

He had just saved three thousand dollars in overhead costs by weaponizing a health code violation. It was a beautiful day.

Elias’s next stop was the local post office on Sunset Boulevard. He used his temporary Sovereign Media check to purchase a massive stack of plain white envelopes and five hundred first-class stamps. Total cost: thirty dollars. The physical pain of writing the check was immense, but it was necessary capital expenditure.

When he returned to Room 104, the sun had fully set. He dumped the box of envelopes, the sheets of stamps, and his heavy box of 499 Inez & Vinoodh Comp Cards onto the carpet.

He stood over the pile, calculating the labor output required to assemble the mailers. His Photographic Memory held the exact mailing addresses of every major casting director, studio executive, and talent agent from the archives of Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. He didn’t need a phone book. He just needed hands.

Elias walked over to the shared wall and pounded his fist against it. ”Paul! Get in here!”

A minute later, the door creaked open. Paul Rudd stood there, wearing the same flannel shirt, looking incredibly stressed. ”Elias, I’m trying to memorize lines for a hemorrhoid cream audition. I have to look soothing but concerned.”

”Cancel it,” Elias said dismissively, gesturing to the mountain of paper on the floor. ”You have been promoted. Sit down. You are now the Executive Assistant for Sovereign Media.”

Paul stared at the pile, then at Elias. ”You want me to stuff envelopes? Elias, I’m an actor! I went to theater school! I’m not a secretary!”

”You are a starving artist with twelve dollars to your name, Paul,” Elias corrected, sitting in the room’s single plastic chair like a king on a throne. ”And you are currently occupying my operational headquarters. Sit down and start licking stamps.”

”This is slavery!” Paul protested, though his innate politeness forced him to lower himself onto the cheap carpet. He picked up an envelope. ”Are you even going to pay me for this?”

Elias let out a soft, elegant sigh. ”Paul, you lack vision. You are not a slave. You are participating in an unpaid executive internship. You are learning the aggressive, boots-on-the-ground mechanics of a hostile industry takeover. The experience you are gaining right now is worth far more than minimum wage.”

Paul stared at him, his mouth open in sheer disbelief. ”You actually believe the garbage coming out of your mouth, don’t you? You are genuinely trying to convince me that licking five hundred stamps is an educational experience.”

”Write the first address,” Elias ordered, ignoring the complaint. He closed his eyes, accessing the flawless, digital archive in his mind. ”Mali Finn Casting. 10202 West Washington Boulevard, Culver City. Sony Pictures Studios.”

Paul paused, his pen hovering over the envelope. ”Wait. Mali Finn? Are you insane? She’s casting the new James Cameron movie! She doesn’t look at unsolicited mail from kids living in the Pelican Motel!”

”She doesn’t look at mail from kids,” Elias agreed smoothly. ”She looks at mail from Sovereign Media. Write the address, Paul.”

For the next two hours, the only sound in the room was the scratching of Paul’s pen and the quiet, agonizing groan he made every time he had to lick the terrible, chemical-tasting adhesive on the back of a stamp.

Elias sat in the chair, eyes closed, rapidly rattling off addresses. Francine Maisler. Marion Dougherty. Lynn Stalmaster. Every major gatekeeper in the city.

By 11:00 PM, Paul’s tongue was practically numb. He dropped the last envelope onto the massive, completed pile and collapsed onto his back, staring at the water-stained ceiling.

”I’m dead,” Paul moaned. ”My tongue has paper cuts. I have ingested more glue than a kindergarten class.”

”You did adequately,” Elias said, opening his eyes and admiring the stack of weaponized mail.

”Okay, so we mail these out tomorrow,” Paul said, sitting up and rubbing his jaw. ”But what happens if they actually call? I mean, your ’Chief Logistics Officer’ out front is going to put them on hold, and then what? You get on the phone and talk to a Hollywood casting director with your heavy European accent? They’re going to know you’re a kid.”

Elias fell silent. He looked at Paul. He looked at the phone sitting on the bedside table.

Paul was right. Elias’s voice, while commanding, was still physically tethered to a sixteen-year-old’s vocal cords. If he tried to negotiate a million-dollar contract over the phone, he would sound like a teenager trying to order a pizza with a fake ID. He needed a proxy. He needed someone with an adult, American accent to act as his agent.

Elias’s gaze slowly drifted back to Paul Rudd.

Paul felt the shift in the room’s energy. He slowly backed away, pressing himself against the wall. ”No. No, absolutely not. Don’t look at me like that. I am an actor, Elias, but I am not an improv master! I can’t pretend to be a high-powered talent agent! I get nervous returning my mom’s phone calls!”

”Paul, you are going to be brilliant,” Elias said softly, his voice dripping with manipulative honey.

”I will stutter!” Paul panicked, his hands flying to his face. ”I’ll sweat! I’ll accidentally tell them I live in a motel! I can’t do it! I don’t have the... the alpha energy!”

Elias recognized a genuine confidence crisis. He couldn’t force Paul to do this if the man was going to break under pressure. He needed a psychological hack. He needed a prop.

Elias mentally accessed his HUD.

[SYSTEM SHOP ACCESSED.]

[CHA-CHING!]

Elias reached into his pocket and pulled out a pair of cheap, dark sunglasses that definitely had not been there five seconds ago.

He stood up, walked over to the terrified, hyperventilating Paul Rudd, and roughly shoved the sunglasses onto Paul’s face.

”Hey! What are you—” Paul started.

He stopped.

The physical transformation was instantaneous and utterly comedic. The nervous, hunched posture of the starving actor vanished. Paul slowly stood up. He ran a hand through his floppy hair, pushing it back. He adjusted the collar of his flannel shirt, suddenly making it look like a deliberate, grunge-fashion choice.

Paul looked at Elias through the dark lenses. The panic was gone. It was replaced by a smooth, utterly unfounded, relaxed arrogance.

”You know what, Elias?” Paul said, his voice dropping into a smooth, unbothered drawl. ”You’re right. These casting directors? They’re nothing. They’re just desk jockeys playing god with headshots. They need us. They should be begging to talk to me on the phone.”

Elias smirked. The system was a parasite, but its cheap gimmicks were highly effective.

”Exactly, Paul,” Elias said, pointing to the massive stack of envelopes. ”Tomorrow morning, we drop these in the mail. And when the phone rings, you are going to answer it as the Senior Managing Partner of Sovereign Media.”

Paul crossed his arms, leaning back against the cheap motel wall with the swagger of a man who owned a yacht. ”Damn right I am. I might even put them on hold just to assert dominance.”

Elias sat back down in his chair, looking at the mountain of mail that was about to flood the city. The infrastructure was built. The bait was set.

Hollywood was about to meet the monster.
