Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Table Read Hijack

The California morning was already suffocatingly bright by eight o’clock. Paul Rudd and Charlize Theron stood on the cracked concrete outside The Pelican Motel, squinting into the sun.

Paul was wearing a slightly less wrinkled button-down shirt, having spent the entire night agonizing over whether a ”Senior Managing Partner” should wear a tie to an indie movie table read. Charlize, true to form, looked effortlessly striking in her faded denim, her arms crossed as she tapped her boot against the curb.

”So,” Paul started, looking nervously down the street. ”Did he say what kind of car he was renting? Because if he drops forty-five grand and rents a stretch limo to go to an indie read, that director is going to hate us instantly. It sends the wrong message. It says ’I’m better than you’.”

Charlize snorted, a harsh, cynical sound. ”Paul, you’ve lived with the boy for a month. Does Elias strike you as a stretch limo kind of bloke? I’m fully expecting him to roll up in a stolen shopping cart.”

Before Paul could argue, the distinct, high-pitched squeal of a failing serpentine belt pierced the morning air.

A car limped around the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and sputtered to a halt in front of the motel. It was a pale, sun-bleached blue 1984 Honda Civic hatchback. The front bumper was held on by what appeared to be aggressive optimism and a single strip of duct tape. It idled with the violent, asthmatic shaking of a dying lawnmower.

The driver’s side window didn’t roll down; it had to be manually pushed down by a long, elegant hand. Elias van Kempen leaned his head out, his dark, aristocratic features forming a stark, comedic contrast to the vehicular tragedy he was operating.

”Get in,” Elias commanded, his baritone voice perfectly smooth, as if he were inviting them onto a private jet.

Paul and Charlize simply stared at the car. A massive sweatdrop materialized on Paul’s forehead.

”Elias,” Paul said, his voice cracking. ”That car is missing a hubcap. And possibly a muffler. You have forty-five thousand dollars in a checking account. You couldn’t rent a mid-size sedan?”

”This vehicle,” Elias stated, patting the rusted door panel with clinical satisfaction, ”was procured from a highly motivated seller behind a pawn shop in Van Nuys for exactly twenty-eight dollars and fifty cents a day. It is an absolute triumph of capital efficiency.”

Charlize groaned, opening the passenger door. A wave of stagnant, superheated air rolled out of the cabin. ”It feels like an oven in here! Where’s the bloody air conditioning?”

”Air conditioning,” Elias replied, entirely deadpan, ”is a parasitic drain on the alternator that reduces fuel efficiency by up to fifteen percent. Roll the windows down. We have an empire to build, and the current macroeconomic climate is actively hostile.”

Elias wasn’t just being dramatic. Ten minutes ago, the loan shark in his skull had arrived right on schedule.

The system’s new $50-a-day extortion rate felt like a physical knife in his ribs. He had the money now, but the principle of the theft made him want to burn a bank down. If the system was going to bleed his liquidity, Elias was going to aggressively claw back every single cent through ruthless logistical austerity.

Paul sighed heavily, climbing into the cramped back seat and immediately banging his knee against the peeling vinyl. ”I feel like I’m riding to a bank robbery in a clown car.”

”Quiet, Paul. You are an Executive Assistant. Review the route,” Elias ordered, shoving the hatchback into gear. The transmission ground ominously before finally catching, launching them into the brutal Los Angeles traffic.

The forty-minute drive to Eagle Rock was a masterclass in sitcom suffering. The Los Angeles sun beat down through the un-tinted windows, turning the small cabin into a mobile greenhouse. Paul was hyperventilating in the back, trying not to sweat through his shirt, while Charlize loudly cursed in Afrikaans every time the car hit a pothole and the suspension violently bottomed out.

Elias, however, drove with the serene, unbothered posture of a Formula 1 driver. He ignored the heat. He ignored the complaints. He was entirely focused on the script sitting on the dashboard.

Reservoir Dogs.

They finally pulled into the parking lot of a massive, non-descript industrial warehouse in Eagle Rock. The lot was mostly empty, save for a few beat-up sedans and a production truck unloading fold-out tables. This wasn’t the glamorous CBS Radford lot. This was the gritty, low-budget trench warfare of early 90s independent cinema.

Elias killed the engine. The car shuddered violently for three seconds before finally dying.

”We have arrived,” Elias announced, stepping out of the baking oven and casually adjusting the collar of his vintage leather jacket. He didn’t sweat. His newly acquired capitalist aura seemed to naturally repel the heat.

Charlize practically tumbled out of the passenger side, gasping for air. ”I am going to put a clause in my contract that specifically forbids me from entering any vehicle you own.”

”Noted,” Elias smirked. ”Follow my lead. You two are my entourage. Do not speak unless spoken to, and look expensive.”

They walked through the heavy rolling doors of the warehouse. The interior was cavernous, smelling of dust and stale coffee. In the center of the vast, empty space, a long ring of folding tables had been pushed together. Sitting around the tables were several men, most of them casually dressed, holding thick scripts.

Elias’s Photographic Memory immediately identified the heavyweights in the room. Sitting near the head of the table was Harvey Keitel, projecting a quiet, terrifyingly authentic veteran presence. A few seats down was Steve Buscemi, looking naturally nervous and eccentric.

But the center of gravity in the room wasn’t an actor. It was the man pacing rapidly behind the chairs.

Quentin Tarantino in 1991 was a ball of raw, unfiltered, hyperactive cinematic energy. He was talking incredibly fast, waving his arms, his voice a distinct, booming cadence as he explained the shot blocking for the opening sequence.

”Alright, so the camera circles the table, right? It’s a continuous movement. We’re establishing the dynamic. It’s just a bunch of guys shooting the shit about Madonna and tipping. It’s casual, but it’s loaded. Every word matters.”

Tarantino stopped his pacing as Elias, Charlize, and Paul approached the table.

Tarantino’s eyes darted from the stunning, fiercely beautiful blonde girl (Charlize), to the nervous-looking guy with the clipboard (Paul), and finally landed on Elias.

Tarantino squinted, his brow furrowing. He had cast Elias off a polaroid from an open call entirely because the kid had the most intense, naturally photogenic scowl he had ever seen. But seeing him now, walking in with an ’entourage’ and wearing vintage leather in a sweltering warehouse, Tarantino immediately assumed the worst.

”You’re the kid playing Mr. Blue, right?” Tarantino asked, his voice sharp and incredibly rapid. ”Van Kempen. Listen, man. I know the studio likes your face. But this isn’t a Levi’s commercial. We don’t have makeup trailers. You’re Mr. Blue. You have exactly three lines in the diner scene, and then you get shot off-screen. Read the lines, don’t step on Harvey’s toes, and don’t try to pull focus, alright? Just sit there and look like you know how to hold a gun.”

It was a blatant, public dismissal. Tarantino was establishing the hierarchy. Keitel was the star. Elias was the set dressing.

Paul flinched, expecting Elias to explode. Charlize crossed her arms, a small, knowing smirk playing on her lips. She knew exactly what happened when you told Elias van Kempen to stay in the background.

Elias didn’t argue. He didn’t boast about his $45,000 commercial check.

”Understood, Quentin,” Elias said, his voice a smooth, flat baritone that instantly chilled the frantic energy in the room. ”I will read exactly what is on the page.”

He pulled out a folding chair and sat down near the end of the table, placing his script in front of him. Paul and Charlize stood quietly behind his chair, completing the illusion of the phantom agency’s executive team.

”Alright, let’s go from the top,” Tarantino clapped his hands, dropping into his director’s chair. ”Scene one. The diner. The camera is spinning. Go.”

The reading began. The veteran actors immediately fell into a rhythm. The dialogue was fast, sharp, and profane. Harvey Keitel commanded the scene with effortless authority. Steve Buscemi delivered his iconic monologue about refusing to tip waitresses, drawing genuine laughs from the crew.

Elias sat perfectly still. He tracked the script with his eyes, waiting for his mark.

His character, Mr. Blue, was supposed to interject. It was a minor line, a throwaway comment designed to transition the conversation back to the main characters.

If you want to be background color, Elias thought, his dark eyes locking onto Buscemi across the table. You stay in your lane.

But Elias van Kempen was a corporate raider. He didn’t wait for permission to take the scene. He bought it.

He mentally engaged the loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

The air around Elias’s chair seemed to drop ten degrees. The shift wasn’t physical; it was entirely psychological.

Elias didn’t move. He didn’t gesture. But suddenly, the sheer, crushing weight of a man who had survived three decades of high-stakes corporate slaughter settled over his shoulders. His dark, exotic eyes lost their youthful ambiguity and became the cold, dead eyes of a predator who had ordered men buried in the desert without losing a minute of sleep.

The frantic, snappy rhythm of the dialogue was approaching his line. Buscemi was delivering his argument against tipping.

”...I don’t tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I’ll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it’s for the birds...”

It was Elias’s turn.

Elias didn’t just read the line. He dropped his voice an entire octave, turning the smooth baritone into a gravelly, chilling whisper that forced every single person at the table to instinctively lean forward just to hear him.

He locked his dead, sociopathic eyes directly onto Buscemi.

”As far as I’m concerned,” Elias whispered, the words dripping with the casual, terrifying boredom of a true psychopath, ”they’re just doing their job.”

The delivery was so utterly devoid of humanity, so profoundly intimidating, that the entire table physically recoiled.

Buscemi, a seasoned professional, was supposed to fire back his next line instantly. But he looked into Elias’s eyes, and for a terrifying fraction of a second, the actor’s brain froze. He felt like he was actually sitting across from a cartel enforcer who was debating whether to stab him with a fork.

”Uh... I...” Buscemi stuttered, completely losing his place in the script, his character’s arrogant bravado momentarily crushed by the sheer gravity of Elias’s aura. A small, genuine sweatdrop formed on his brow.

He quickly recovered, finding his line. ”But this girl was okay.”

”She was okay,” Elias countered immediately. He didn’t raise his voice, but the terrifyingly slow, deliberate cadence of his words sucked all the air out of the room. He wasn’t acting. He was dominating. ”She wasn’t anything special.”

He held the stare for two seconds longer than the script required. It was an eternity in cinematic pacing. He had taken Tarantino’s rapid-fire dialogue and dragged it to a complete, terrifying halt, forcing the entire room to revolve around his silence.

The scene limped on, but the damage was done. The delicate balance of power at the table had been violently hijacked. Every time Elias spoke his minor, three-word interjections, the veteran actors around him subtly tensed, their performances completely overshadowed by the sixteen-year-old kid who felt like a live bomb sitting at the table.

”Cut! Cut! Hold on!” Tarantino suddenly yelled, slamming his hand down on the folding table.

The director leaped out of his chair, pacing frantically, running both hands through his hair. He looked at Elias, his expression a mixture of profound frustration and sheer, unadulterated awe.

”What the hell was that?” Tarantino demanded, pointing a finger at Elias. ”You’re Mr. Blue! You’re supposed to be the quiet old guy in the corner! You just turned a fast-paced banter scene into a hostage negotiation!”

”I read the lines exactly as they were written on the page, Quentin,” Elias replied smoothly, allowing the Mafia Aura to fade, his face returning to its normal, unbothered arrogance. He leaned back in his folding chair, crossing his legs.

”You didn’t just read the lines!” Tarantino practically shrieked, pacing faster. ”You sucked the entire gravitational pull of the room into your chair! Steve literally stuttered! You’re pulling focus from the main conflict! If I shoot the scene like this, the audience isn’t going to care about the tipping argument; they’re going to spend the whole scene wondering when you’re going to pull a gun and shoot everyone at the table!”

Harvey Keitel, sitting quietly near the front, let out a low, appreciative chuckle. The veteran actor recognized a scene-stealer when he saw one.

Paul Rudd looked like he was about to pass out from stress. Charlize, however, had her arms crossed, a massive, predatory smirk mirroring Elias’s own. She was witnessing a masterclass in hostile takeovers.

”Then I suggest a logistical adjustment,” Elias stated seamlessly, locking eyes with the frantic director. ”You said the camera circles the table continuously. A spinning shot.”

”Yeah, so?” Tarantino asked, stopping his pacing.

”If my presence creates a gravitational anomaly in the background,” Elias continued, deploying his shameless, sociopathic logic with the absolute confidence of a studio head, ”then you cannot frame me as background. If you keep the camera moving past me quickly, it creates a jarring visual dissonance. The audience will feel the tension, but they won’t understand the source.”

Tarantino frowned, his brilliant cinematic brain rapidly processing the visual geometry. ”And your solution is?”

”When the dialogue reaches my lines,” Elias said softly, tapping the script with a long finger. ”You stop the camera movement. You break the spinning continuous shot. You park the lens directly on me for a static, uninterrupted close-up. Let the tension breathe. Then, you resume the spin.”

Tarantino stared at him, his mouth slightly open. A sweatdrop rolled down the side of his face. The kid was demanding a static close-up in the middle of a continuous master shot. It broke the rules of the scene. It elevated a minor character to a point of massive visual importance.

But Tarantino was a genius, and a genius knew when a disruption made the art better. Breaking the fluid camera movement for a sudden, jarring close-up on Elias’s terrifying, deadpan delivery would create an explosive spike in tension right before the opening credits rolled.

”You’re an arrogant little shit,” Tarantino muttered, rubbing his jaw, a manic gleam entering his eyes. He looked at his cinematographer sitting nearby. ”Andi! Can we stop the dolly track on his mark? A hard stop, right on his face, then pick up the momentum?”

The cinematographer nodded slowly. ”It’s tricky, but it’ll look incredibly intense.”

Tarantino turned back to Elias, pointing a finger at him like a loaded gun. ”Fine. You get the close-up. But if you blink, if you lose that dead-eyed killer look for one second on camera, I’m cutting you out of the movie entirely.”

”I never blink when there is money on the table, Quentin,” Elias smiled, a cold, empty expression that proved he didn’t need to act the part.

Elias leaned back in his chair. He had just walked into a room full of Hollywood legends, armed with nothing but a 25 CP system skill and a rusted, un-airconditioned Honda Civic.

He had stolen the scene. He had stolen the camera angle.

The Phantom Agency was officially operational.
