Rebirth 1991: Keep the Fame, I'll Take the Royalties

The Proxy Audition

The hallway outside the casting office in Building 14 was a toxic, suffocating cloud of Aqua Net hairspray, cheap perfume, and desperate ambition.

Elias van Kempen and Charlize Theron stepped into the corridor, and the sheer volume of the competition became instantly apparent. There were easily over a hundred and fifty young women crammed into the narrow space. They lined the walls, sat on the carpeted floor, and huddled in anxious groups.

And, just as Elias had predicted, they all looked exactly the same.

It was a sea of late-80s leftover aesthetics: floral sundresses, brightly colored sequined tops, heavy blush, and curled hair piled high. They looked like a synchronized swimming team reporting for duty at a pageant.

When Charlize walked through the double doors, the ambient chatter in the immediate vicinity died down. The perfectly polished actresses turned their heads, their eyes raking over her tall, imposing frame. They took in her scuffed combat boots, the faded, oversized denim jacket hanging off one shoulder, and the raw, unbrushed styling of her dirty-blonde hair.

Charlize felt the weight of their judgment. She instinctively crossed her arms, a flash of defensive insecurity tightening her jaw. She was a farm girl from Benoni, South Africa, standing in a room full of Beverly Hills royalty.

”Look at her boots,” a girl standing near the wall whispered loudly to her friend. She was wearing a perfectly pressed pink cocktail dress. ”Did she get lost on the way to a grunge concert? This is an audition for a Richard Donner film, not a soup kitchen.”

Her friend snickered, adjusting a heavy pearl necklace. ”Maybe she’s auditioning for the role of the janitor.”

Charlize’s eyes flashed with real anger. She took a step toward the girls, her South African temper flaring, ready to unleash a string of bilingual profanities that would make a sailor blush.

A long, elegant hand smoothly intercepted her, resting lightly on her shoulder.

Elias stepped in front of her. He didn’t look angry. He looked profoundly, genuinely pitying. He turned his mesmerizing, dark eyes toward the two girls in the pink dresses, slipping his hands into the pockets of his vintage leather jacket.

”It really is a tragedy,” Elias said, his voice a smooth, carrying baritone that effortlessly sliced through the hallway noise. Several other actresses turned to listen.

The girl in the pink dress frowned. ”Excuse me? What’s a tragedy?”

”The incompetence of your representation,” Elias replied, shaking his head with a slow, mournful sigh. ”Your agents clearly didn’t brief you on the updated character breakdowns sent out by the studio this morning. It’s a career-ending oversight, really.”

The girls exchanged a panicked look. In Hollywood, missing an updated casting breakdown was a death sentence. ”What updated breakdown? What are you talking about?”

Elias leaned in slightly, dropping his voice into a conspiratorial whisper that practically forced everyone within a ten-foot radius to lean in and eavesdrop.

”Richard Donner reviewed the tapes from yesterday’s sessions,” Elias lied effortlessly, deploying a stream of absolute, weaponized fiction. ”He was disgusted. He said everyone looked like they belonged in a soap opera. The studio is pivoting. They want ’Realism Grime’. They want a girl who looks like she just survived a three-day bender in a dive bar in Downtown L.A. They are explicitly rejecting anyone who looks too polished, too clean, or too eager to please.”

He let his eyes slowly trail over their perfectly pressed dresses and flawless makeup, offering a look of deep, aristocratic sympathy.

”The sequins scream ’pageant contestant’,” Elias finished smoothly. ”You look beautiful. But you are going to be rejected the moment you walk through that door. I would fire your agent this afternoon if I were you.”

Elias didn’t wait for a response. He turned and gently guided a completely stunned Charlize down the hallway.

Behind them, utter chaos erupted.

”Oh my god, Realism Grime!” the girl in the pink dress shrieked, frantically pulling at her perfectly curled hair, desperately trying to flatten it.

”I have too much blush on! Do I look too clean?!” her friend panicked, aggressively rubbing her cheeks until they were red and smeared.

Within thirty seconds, a wave of mass hysteria had infected the entire section of the hallway. Girls were sprinting toward the nearest restroom, ripping off necklaces, desperately smudging their own eyeliner, and trying to wrinkle their expensive dresses in the sinks. The polished pageant had devolved into a frantic, manufactured grunge apocalypse.

Charlize looked over her shoulder at the panicked stampede, a massive, cartoonish sweatdrop rolling down the side of her face.

”Elias,” Charlize whispered, her voice laced with absolute awe and horror. ”You literally just made thirty girls ruin their own makeup with two sentences. You didn’t even raise your voice.”

”Psychological warfare is the most cost-effective form of sabotage, Charlize,” Elias replied deadpan, stepping up to the casting desk. ”It requires zero capital expenditure.”

The casting assistant sitting behind the desk looked like a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown. His name tag read Kevin. He was surrounded by a literal mountain of headshots, clutching a lukewarm cup of coffee, staring blankly at a clipboard filled with hundreds of names.

Elias knew the math. A walk-in without an appointment in a room of this size would wait at least three to four hours. Four hours in a hallway was an unacceptable loss of momentum.

It was time to bypass the gatekeeper.

Elias mentally engaged the loan shark.

[CHA-CHING!]

The air around Elias thickened, dropping the ambient temperature. He didn’t just look like a handsome teenager anymore; he projected the dense, suffocating gravity of a senior studio executive who had the power to fire everyone in the building.

Elias leaned over the desk, planting both hands firmly on the wood. He didn’t ask a question. He issued a directive.

”Kevin,” Elias said, his voice a low, rumbling command that made the assistant physically flinch.

Elias reached into his pocket, retrieved a single, crumpled twenty-dollar bill from the cash he had extorted yesterday, and slid it smoothly across the desk. He placed the bill directly over the blank ’Walk-In’ sign-up sheet, pinning it down with his index finger.

”My client is Charlize Theron. Sovereign Media,” Elias dictated, staring directly into Kevin’s exhausted eyes. ”We do not have three hours. We have a Concorde flight to catch at LAX. You are going to slot her in next. Immediately after whoever is currently in the room.”

Kevin stared at the twenty-dollar bill. In the high-stakes world of Hollywood casting, twenty dollars was a pathetic, almost insulting bribe. But the sheer, terrifying conviction in Elias’s eyes, combined with the crushing Intimidation Aura, completely bypassed Kevin’s logical defenses. Kevin’s exhausted brain simply processed Elias as a man too dangerous to refuse.

”Uh... yes, sir. Charlize Theron. S-Sovereign Media. Got it,” Kevin stammered, frantically writing her name at the very top of his VIP priority list and subtly sweeping the twenty-dollar bill into his lap. ”She’s up next.”

”Excellent,” Elias murmured.

While Kevin was distracted writing, Elias’s eyes shifted downward.

Resting on the corner of the desk, facing away from Elias, was a stack of stapled papers. The ’sides’—the specific pages of the script the actresses were being asked to read inside the room.

Elias didn’t touch the paper. He didn’t need to. His Photographic Memory engaged, sweeping over the upside-down text. His brain instantly inverted the letters, capturing the dialogue, the stage directions, and the character breakdown in a matter of milliseconds.

EXT. BURGER STAND - DAY.The girl (beautiful, spoiled, chewing gum) leans against the sports car. She looks at the cop.GIRL: (Whining) I told you I wanted extra mustard on this. It’s totally ruined. Are you going to get me another one or what?

Elias blinked, committing the text to his permanent mental archive. He stepped back from the desk, the Intimidation Aura fading away as he turned back to Charlize.

He grabbed her arm and pulled her into a quiet corner of the hallway, away from the frantic, smudged actresses.

”Listen to me carefully,” Elias whispered, his face inches from hers. ”The script is a single scene. You are standing outside a burger stand. A cop hands you a burger. The line is: ’I told you I wanted extra mustard on this. It’s totally ruined. Are you going to get me another one or what?’”

Charlize frowned, repeating the line in her head. ”That’s it? That’s the whole audition? It sounds like a whiny, spoiled brat.”

”Exactly,” Elias nodded, his eyes gleaming with clinical precision. ”The stage directions explicitly ask for a ’spoiled girl’ who ’whines’. That is what the writer wrote.”

”Okay, so I whine,” Charlize said, preparing to adjust her posture.

”Absolutely not,” Elias snapped, his voice sharp. ”If you whine, you are doing exactly what the other one hundred and fifty girls in this hallway are doing. Marion Dougherty has been sitting in that room for six hours listening to amateur actresses whine about mustard. Her brain is numb. If you play the script as written, you are invisible.”

Charlize stared at him. ”Elias, if I don’t follow the stage directions, they’ll think I can’t take direction!”

”You aren’t here to follow directions, Charlize. You are here to orchestrate a hostile takeover of the scene,” Elias commanded, his hands gripping her shoulders. ”I want you to ignore the stage directions entirely. Do not whine. Do not smile. Do not act like a spoiled teenager.”

Elias leaned in, his voice dropping into a dark, hypnotic register.

”I want you to deliver that line like you are a bored hitman,” Elias instructed, his eyes locking onto hers. ”I want you to look at the Casting Director like she owes you money. Deliver the line about the mustard with the cold, dead-eyed, sociopathic stillness of a woman who is currently deciding whether or not to pull a gun from her jacket and shoot the man behind the counter. Do you understand? Make the mustard sound like a death threat.”

Charlize’s breath caught in her throat. The sheer, terrifying brilliance of the direction clicked in her mind. It wasn’t about the words; it was about the subtext. A beautiful girl whining was annoying. A beautiful girl radiating lethal, unbothered menace was captivating.

”A bored hitman,” Charlize repeated, a slow, dangerous smile finally breaking across her face. Her posture shifted, her spine straightening, the raw, gritty edge of her South African survival instincts rising to the surface. ”I can do that.”

”Charlize Theron!” Kevin the assistant called out from the desk, his voice echoing in the hallway. ”You’re up!”

”Go,” Elias said softly. ”Kill the room.”

Charlize turned and walked toward the heavy wooden doors of the casting office. She didn’t look back. She pushed the doors open and stepped inside, the heavy panels shutting behind her.

Elias leaned against the wall, crossing his arms, waiting in the chaotic hallway.

Inside the casting room, the air was thick with the scent of stale coffee and exhaustion.

Marion Dougherty, one of the most legendary casting directors in Hollywood history, sat behind a folding table. She was rubbing her temples, a migraine slowly building behind her eyes. She had seen seventy girls today. All of them pretty. All of them delivering the exact same, shrill, whining performance about a ruined hamburger.

”Next,” Marion sighed, not even looking up from her notepad as the heavy door opened. ”Name and agency, please. Stand on the X.”

”Charlize Theron,” a voice replied. ”Sovereign Media.”

The voice wasn’t high-pitched or eager. It was smooth, slightly raspy, and carried an undeniable, hard-edged accent.

Marion looked up. Her pen stopped moving.

Standing on the taped ’X’ in the center of the room was a girl who looked like she had just walked out of a war zone and found it incredibly tedious. She wasn’t wearing a cocktail dress. She wore scuffed combat boots and a faded denim jacket that hung off her frame. Her dirty-blonde hair was messy, framing a face of such striking, classical beauty that the contrast was almost physically jarring.

She didn’t have a headshot. She didn’t offer a nervous smile. She just stood there, her hands buried in her jacket pockets, staring at Marion with eyes that looked like frozen ice.

”Alright... Charlize,” Marion said, sitting up slightly straighter, her fatigue momentarily pierced by the sheer visual impact of the girl. ”Whenever you’re ready. I’ll read the cop’s line.”

Marion cleared her throat, looking down at the script.

”Here’s your burger, miss,” Marion read, her voice flat.

Charlize didn’t move. She didn’t sigh. She didn’t throw her hands up in a spoiled tantrum.

She simply tilted her head a fraction of an inch. Her blue eyes locked onto Marion’s, unblinking and utterly devoid of warmth. The silence stretched for three agonizing seconds, building a tension in the room that was thick enough to cut with a knife.

”I told you,” Charlize whispered.

Her voice was low, gravelly, and terrifyingly calm. It wasn’t a whine. It was a statement of fact from a predator to its prey.

”I wanted extra mustard on this.”

She took a slow, deliberate step forward, her combat boots thudding softly on the carpet. She didn’t look at the imaginary burger; she kept her dead eyes pinned on the casting director.

”It’s totally ruined.”

The delivery was so cold, so profoundly menacing, that Marion actually felt the hair on her arms stand up. The words on the page were generic, but the girl was playing the scene as if the missing mustard was a deeply personal insult that required violent retribution.

Charlize let the silence hang for another torturous second. Then, her lips curved into the faintest, most chilling smirk imaginable.

”Are you going to get me another one,” Charlize asked softly, her South African accent clipping the consonants like broken glass, ”or what?”

The pen slipped from Marion Dougherty’s fingers and clattered onto the table.

The silence in the casting room was absolute. Marion stared at the sixteen-year-old girl standing on the ’X’. She hadn’t seen a performance; she had seen a threat. It was the most riveting, unexpected interpretation of a throwaway scene she had seen in years. It was the exact kind of unpredictable, dangerous energy that a franchise like Lethal Weapon desperately needed to keep the audience awake.

Marion slowly reached down and picked up her pen.

”Who did you say your manager was again?” Marion asked, her voice hushed.

Charlize didn’t break character. She maintained her cold, unbothered posture, turning on her heel to face the door.

”Elias van Kempen,” Charlize stated smoothly. ”Sovereign Media.”

Without waiting to be dismissed, Charlize pushed the heavy wooden doors open and walked out of the casting room.

Out in the hallway, Elias watched the heavy doors swing open.

Charlize stepped out into the chaotic, hairspray-choked corridor. She looked at Elias, her face perfectly composed until the heavy doors clicked shut behind her.

Then, a massive, arrogant smile broke across her face. She walked over to him, bumping her shoulder against his.

”The casting director dropped her pen,” Charlize whispered, her eyes dancing with the adrenaline of a successful heist.

Elias didn’t smile, but a deep, satisfying hum of capitalist triumph resonated in his chest. He reached out and smoothly adjusted the collar of her denim jacket back to its proper place.

”I told you,” Elias said simply, his voice a low baritone. ”We don’t sell beauty. We sell leverage. Now, let’s go. We have a wardrobe to steal.”

Deep in the recesses of his mind, the system rang out, confirming the absolute domination of the phantom agency.
